Feel free to ignore this nub. If you play Amarr or Caldari, there is plenty of space to play in where the pirates can not get to you without having to face NPC super ships. However, if you are interested in end game content, don't plan to see it for at least a year. It will take you 6 months of skilling to even try to pvp with any success. 1 year and you should have necessary skills to kill pretty much anything you run into, numbers being the determining factor. This is a game of time spent vs power levelling. There is no way to power level. All skills have a real time timer involved. To get to some of the advanced skills, several basic skills are required to be maxed out, which will require several months to train. Then plan to spend between a week and several months, real time, to train the advanced skill 1 train point.
Please ignore this noob... they have no clue what they are talking about... You can get into heavy pvp very early I have a extremely successful player in my corp less than 4 month old and a few under him that are doing fairly well in addition. If there was a way to safely temporarly swap accounts to rip my own 50mil SP combat character to threads with a 2-3month character I would do it everytime. Hell my roomate is thinking of droping his 45mil character and starting a new account.. Game time = Real knowledge = player ability = Ingame Power that is the truth of EVE. More SP doesn't make you automatically better it just means you've been playing long enough to already have been through the school of hard knocks.

Oh yeah, you can get into it, and very quickly have your ass handed to you. Facts are facts. A player that has been in the game a year is going to wtf pwn someone who has been in the game for 6 months, unless the year player is a complete moron. Oh, and for the uninformed. About the 2nd month, you are into level 4 missions and out in low sec/no sec. Guess what? Plan on getting ganked a lot but 2 or 3 ships or one guy that has been playing a while with all his skills jacked up. Player skill = almost zero. Time in game = 99% of pvp.
why do people continue to say this? all it does it show everyone that they are unable to compete because they are rubbish at eve. my new pvp alt is kicking ass and taking names with laz0r powa.
Originally posted by HellsMajesty Ty for clarifying that its just that everything in this game seems to take a fairly significant amount of time to get into. Its not a negative thing for me its just what not what im used to coming from more "run around and cut stuff" MMOs lol where you can reach endgame in a matter of weeks if not days. But its good this game seems to push people to actually acheieve something, that coupled with the fact its so different from most other games is whats attracting me to it.
You do have to think of eve quite differently. There are so many different goals that you could pursue that end game becomes a bit meaningless.
You limit your game play by limiting your goals, not by jumping through the limited number of hoops that a developer has written.
A lot of the tangible goals do have time limits on them. there are a few shortcuts here and there but it will take a long time to have the skills to fly a titan, the real goal with titans is making yourself respected in an alliance enough to have the support to deploy one.So a lot of things take time, this means you need to find the journey the pleasure, not the achievement being the only reward. A grind is a grind and if you do it to reach the endgame, it is reasonable, but if there is no end in sight the grind becomes a significant burden.
I am not playing EVE actively for some time but I love to create a trial account once in a while so I can share some experience with starting new characters.
It doesn't matter much what race you start. All races have their pros and cons and I have to say the game is pretty balanced. It is only about how you can adapt to play-style of your race.
I enjoyed Gallente characters because of massive dmg blasters can dish out and I find them the only race worthy to fly a cruiser class vessel within 14 days trial period. Plated Thorax with small blasters is excellent ship very easy to train. Still, you will do very fine in Incursus. Do not underestimate T1 frigs of any race.
As for occupancy - do not bother with missions or salvaging. Missions are waste of time for new players since all you can get from them is ISK only - you will learn nothing about the game when doing missions, nothing.
Before you start your character, find some low sec guides. Low sec is space where you want to spend your trial period. Learn to use map, scanner and keep your mind focused. You can make +2M per hour ratting in low sec in T1 frig. The cost of your ship+fittings? 1,5 Mil. The math is simple there - easy replacemet = lots of fun.
ive been playing through the trial for the 2nd time now to help myself pick up some of the basics of the game and me and a friend are gonna buy our first month soon i think so id just like to thank everyone whos posted for their help and maybe ill see you flying about :P

nice now you only need to make more friends ingame also
"...Player skill = almost zero. Time in game = 99% of pvp..." I was afraid of that...
Yeah I was afraid we get another one of those people who never figured out how to pvp till they were a year in the game and made the assumption that that it takes a year in the game ot pvp. Truth of the matter is Player skill is about 95% of PVP, the other 5% is just having the skills to use the modules and ship you want. Of course that 5% can take some time for a specific ship but if you remove wanting to fly a specific ship you can be extremely effective early on. Most fights involve a gang and those are the ones that a young player will be able to accomplish somethign in. In 1v1 fights most of those are all about catching the other pilot in a situation that they are at a severe disadvantage, in which case the target will generally lose no matter how many SP they have.

nicoli gave a good response... i'm curious (guess i'm missing it) -- from where/who are you quoting?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

This!
Hell, EVE is full of players like me. I've got lots of SP's, (1.5 yrs in game) can fit/fly a wide variety of ships and yet, I am very average (and that's being kind) at PVP so it is quite easy for a skilled PVP player with far less SP's to easily destroy me 1v1.
I admit it, I'm unable to compete with folks 30 years younger than me, esp those who spend most of their time pvping while I tend to carebear pve a lot.
I solve this problem in two ways. First, I'm a master at avoiding trouble, or getting away if danger threatens. (yep, I'll run like hell)
Second, when I want to win, I make sure I have a few good corpmates at my back, and we overwhelm our opponents. (screw 1v1, I have no problem winning big with an unfair advantage)
So don't let anyone tell you that newer players can't compete. One of the best PVP'ers in my corp had 6 months experience and was flying T1 cruisers. He lost a lot of ships as well, since he was willing to risk everything to fight/win, but he did hold the record for most kills at the same time.

Hey! I mined for my first year in EvE dammit. I'm very patient - it took me that long to figure out that it was boring.
Of course, everything you said is still true. Though I feel 1v1s are a good way to learn pvp if you have the ISK and the stones to handle getting your ass handed to you a bunch - you'll die lots but I always learn more from my losses than my wins.

Hehe mined my first year as well, crazy boring unless you have a good chat going on, are listening to music or have some kind of weird laser/asteriod fetish.
On the flip side though mining does provide a good source of isk to get started pvping or whatever else though.
