There is the choice of buying the game for under $10 out there at a bargain and people can make their own mind up - something which I am sure would be better without much outlay, then they can compare the info from current subscribers to the outdated info floating around and make a better informed decision as a consumer out for the best deal.
It doesn't matter whether the game cost 100$, 10$ or if it's free. Have you ever heard the saying: 'time is money'?
When we play MMO's we invest a lot of time into them. Imo this loss of time has always been a bigger issue than some 15$ monthly fee. When a person plays some MMO for 3 months, that is a huge timesink. And if in the end he doesn't even like the game than he wasted a lot of money AND time.
This is especially important when we talk about AoC because the beginning of the game is pretty good, whereas the endgame is boring and empty.
This logic of 'let them try it and make up their own mind' is just dumb. There are tons of other games out there and nobody has time to try all of them. That's why they come here to ask about the game so they can decide whether they want to try it or not.
It's important to talk about the negative things of Age of Conan. It's a known fact that about 90% of players quit Age of Conan after launch. Therefore it's more likely that a random person trying AoC, won't like it.
Age of Conan is a niche game, developed for 10% of MMO gamers out there. If you belong to that 10%, you will love it. If not.. find some other game.

Epic stuff right there! lol. I think we all have the right to make up our own mind. Also show us the reference to that known fact you refer to (a fact is something documented by a party having access to real data), and finally the most epic comment of them all. "Don't try the game because many people had issues 8 months ago. Try some other game just not AoC, Pleeeaaaase". lol. Dude get a grip.

I see you didn't even read my post. Read it again.
My point is that people come here to ask opinions about an MMO so that they don't have to TRY EVERY FREAKING MMO OUT THERE.
So when someone asks what the game is like and should he try it, it's dumb to reply: 'try it yourself and make up your own mind!'
Get it?
People who didn't like the gameplay, instances or lack of endgame 8 months ago, won't like the game today. Period. Why? Because those things haven't changed!!
Some people here..

No one is telling them to sub for 3 months - are you a bit confused here? - just as a recommendation to but the game cheap 30 days is included - you can pick the game up cheaper that what it costs to pay per month!
After your month free as a wiser more informed customer you can make a better decision as to whether you want to sub or not - no pressure. Therefore that time spent would save money on just subbing upfront.
"You never know unless you try it!"
For under $10 you can have your monies worth.
This is especially important when we talk about AoC because the beginning of the game is pretty good, whereas the endgame is boring and empty.
Well would that be a risk that the customer themselves could actually make that decision themselves as a grown up right? are you saying that people can't do this or not capable?

Ok so there will be a free trial coming soon - people can wait out for that if they want - they can also go for a buddy key and pay $2.99 DL or use their disks already if they have them as a previous subber. Or they can buy the game cheaper than $10 - thats 3 options all cheaper than the regular monthly sub at little out cost to them - I am sure people wouldn't be put out too much from those options. For me it is better than saying - "hey mate ! I can make your mind up for you - just don't play - thank me later!" Feedback is good in that they have options if they want to try it out at little to no cost to them if they find it interesting. Still 1st hand experience is better than theory in my experience. Remember they are asking about the game because they are interested in the first place - it only seems that some here are hell bent on telling people not to play without knowing the interested partys likes / dislikes. Therefore they would be in a better position to try themselves.

But you don't have figures to support that percentage either way ( for or against ) and will never know - sure can make a rough guess, it is also know that a lot left after the first few months - which was as a fact like half a year ago You can not compare random guy 1 to random guy 2 - sorry.
Age of Conan is a niche game, developed for 10% of MMO gamers out there. If you belong to that 10%, you will love it. If not.. find some other game.
Well that is your opinion which is all fine and all, some people think it caters to a bit more than that other don't. Whose to say good ole random guy 1 or 2 might or might not be in that so called 10% ? - I'll tell you who the guy who wants you not to play and thinks they are on a crusade of some type, or even the same guy telling you 3 or 4 times under different names
When free trial comes - there will be no reason not to try to game.
What is obvious is that threads like this get right up the nose of those who have no real interest in the game - such a shame! Some people should be more open in giving better choices to the potential customer instead of scaring them away and treating them like they can't make their own mind up.
I dont see this "so many people getting BACK into" AoC. Not to long ago read in AoC forums about what the game was like and basicly what the game played like 4-7 months ago is still the way it plays now. DX10 did not nor does not make the game look like OMG WHAT A CHANGE! lol. The people that we see are from the server merge. And some new ones that want to see the DX10.
Yet we dont see more and more people posting on the forums over there... Yeah yeah most dont post blah blah. AoC MERGED servers lol and you want to say they are getting more people.. a yeah they saw the same thing and want to MERGE everyone. Take 12 apples divide in half.. then put them together.. WOW look how many MORE you have now!
Please.. AoC has never nor will they tell you how many are or were playing.
And OP there are NOW less people playing than there was just one month ago based on the thread you posted. Sorry google cant lie! Jk..but thats what it shows.
But hey you like AoC play it.. you dont .. dont. Like wow play it.. you like SWG.. play it. Who cares if its alive or dying. Its your money.

Ohh I see so you are not playing the game. That's what I though all the time. lol
PvP XP Levels and PvP Itemization
PvP Consequence system
Combat system adjustments to speed up combos and reduce number of keystrokes
Battlekeep and city sieges optimalization (tweak of siege machine damage, to hit, War Mammoths damage, damage Zone, reconfiguration of rez pads, Guards respawn adjusted, NPC AI , and so and so on... The list is like 100's of adjustments)
Revamping of dungeons, more content, bosses, receipes, itemization/drops
Add +50 quests on a general level.
Gems and PvP adjustments
Expand on E Mountain content + Quests
Add extra zone Ymirs, pass level 55-65
Add more items on a general level, adjustments of crafting skills and resources, receipes
General ironing out bugs that hampered gameplay
And so on and so on
Look this is just a few of the changes I saw in the patch notes before I decided to get back into the game. If you call this no change to gameplay, I am speachless and I guess the discussion ends here. This made totally a huge change for me.

It's pretty obvious what kind of correspondent you want to be by bumping an epic thread like this after 9 days of inactivity. Threads like these don't "hurt me mentally", they hurt my intelligence.
P.S.: I really can't see how the potential customers you worry so much about, won't be scared away by putting glorious threads like this in the front page. If that doesn't drive them away, nothing will.

Yes your so right - judging from the conversation that ensued it proved to be a talking point still and very much a matter of topic at hand still. This thread is based on www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/217994 which in detail discuss an significant increase in AoC gaming over the last month. Yesterday the merge was perfectly completed and it is expected that this trend only will increase. Just out of interest lets complete a poll over why AoC seem to again appeal to the masses, after all as many people have pointed out over the last half year it is not normal for a MMO to gain activity again in the way AoC have done.
TAKE THE POLL AND THEN WRITE SOME CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS
I'm not there and haven't heard much about so many people playing now again though I imagine if they did merge servers they would all look like more people are playing again since they are more crowded.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

What did you vote for?
Honestly I didn't waste my time voting, this poll is at the very least inclusive to those playing aoc right now which I'm not wasting my time on it. The poll is even crafted to give no voice to those who played and have not returned which points to a desire to make an appearance more than actually gaining true knowledge on the issue.
I have a few reasons that I will likely not ever play aoc again but am glad to see that this game is starting to head in the right direction. This game never had anything to offer me anyway I am burned out on fantasy settings, pvp is a really small part of my play time and I have no love for the instanced design nor the control of the game.
I could be wrong but I think alot of the points I made are going to work against this game in the long run if not I am glad for the community and the company which I think has made nice strides since they did what I suggested needed to be done all along and that was to lose Gaute.
I would think this game has found some stability, a bit of working content, and a direction that makes sense but as for the poll I can't see it as anything other that a stealth add because as some have pointed out some of the things said and insinuated by these types of posts often only hurt because the chanes are often not as significant as claimed.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I could not agree more to your point on Gaute. I played the beast at launch and recently joined back in. Craig has done a remarkable job, killing most of the reasons I quit over. FC should praise their lucky ass over having a guy like Craig taking them out of the deep shit they were in.
Some people make good points, but a lot of the people in this thread are just bashing AoC because their feelings got hurt when the game released.
It's true that when the game came out it wasn't even worthy of being called a beta. But thinking the game is still the same is being plain ignorant. I just resubbed and i am surprised on how many people are active on the server, global chat is always active and there was a lot of people in/outside tortage. I recently quit Warhammer because even the most populated servers are ghost towns.
Anyway, there is nothing else nothing else to play right now. I already owned the game and decided to give it a shot again, so far i'm having a blast. If in a month or two im bored i'll just move on.
Plus pvp that requires skill will sure make a nice change from the "I keyboard turn and spam 1 key to win" game that is WoW.
I could not agree more to your point on Gaute. I played the beast at launch and recently joined back in. Craig has done a remarkable job, killing most of the reasons I quit over. FC should praise their lucky ass over having a guy like Craig taking them out of the deep shit they were in.
Craig hasn't taken them out of that deep shit yet. Age of Conan still has about 100k subs. Compare that to what they had before (750k) and you'll see what I mean.

No but with recent developments in the game, upcoming releases, developer feedback and such I think he has given the game and it's future some credibility and those of us playing it hope. It may never reach what it was at launch in terms of players but if things keep going the way they have been over the last few months we are going to have a very solid and fun game and I'm sure a healthy community. I hope funcom can keep it up.
I am thinking the population has plateaued and will stay pretty close to where it is right now for the next month, with possibly a another smaller surge when the DX10 patch releases followed by a gradual upward trend. If I am wrong and the pop starts decreasing by mid February then I look for it to end back down to around 70K or even less. Worst case scenario it could end up another Vanguard or Horizons. If I am right then the game might work it's way back up to the 150 to 200K range by years end and level out at EQII or even LoTRO numbers.
Although the game itself cannot hold my interest, watching it as a spectator is fascinating.

I think there is a lot of truth in what you wrote here. We won't see drastic changes in numbers until atleast 6 months I think. Maybe the expansion is what will trigger it too, but dx10 alone won't bring back people in masses.
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC) On my radar: TSW, MO MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
I think the Expansion is the only thing that could significantly increase player numbers.
A lot of people left because of the 'lack' of content. Expansions are essentially content. So its definitely a good reason for a lot of people to return and give AoC another shot.
I would definitely consider returning if the Expansion delivered some interesting content/features.
Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.

That's what I though all the time. lol
Look this is just a few of the changes I saw in the patch notes before I decided to get back into the game. If you call this no change to gameplay, I am speachless and I guess the discussion ends here. This made totally a huge change for me.

P.S.: I really can't see how the potential customers you worry so much about, won't be scared away by putting glorious threads like this in the front page. If that doesn't drive them away, nothing will.

Promoting activity for these forums and current topics of interest which I will add were spilling over into other threads, quite apt to be on top of current interests
Thought you would of been intelligent enough to not just reply if it was so painfull for you?
I'm not there and haven't heard much about so many people playing now again though I imagine if they did merge servers they would all look like more people are playing again since they are more crowded.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I miss DAoC
I think there is a lot of truth in what you wrote here. We won't see drastic changes in numbers until atleast 6 months I think. Maybe the expansion is what will trigger it too, but dx10 alone won't bring back people in masses.
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
I think the Expansion is the only thing that could significantly increase player numbers.
A lot of people left because of the 'lack' of content. Expansions are essentially content. So its definitely a good reason for a lot of people to return and give AoC another shot.
I would definitely consider returning if the Expansion delivered some interesting content/features.
