I just wish you would start more of these threads that haven't been beaten to death.
Funcom is the devil! Duh.
Craig is just as bad as GG! Hisssss booo!
Looking back in the past...Craig didn't turn AO around. When he took over AoC...he didn't start being more open with the community or start getting patches out in a timely manner. He hasn't changed the game for the better AT ALL! There was no difference at all between when GG left and Craig came in.
You are totally right in every way. I'm sure you must have played AoC recently and know what problems it faces.
Hey, nice text, but god damn it reading your last statements it sounds like you are talking about the Holocaust or another crime against humanity. Let me just remind you, you speak about a game.
Bit of an extreme analogy :P
I'm not losing any sleep over this but I'll be damned if I'm going to stay quiet while a company, gaming or otherwise, rips me off. Twice. Games are a product like any other; I would be just as incensed if my contractor sold me a bathroom without a toilet but promised me it would be installed by "late June." Companies shouldn't get away with this. People shouldn't be apologizing for them. A certain level of quality should be expected from software that I have to pay for.
I think it's ridiculous how this reversal of roles are afforded to MMO companies in particular. We are their customer, they should be held accountable for their actions. Instead, you have a vocal minority willing to stick up for unethical business practices and blatant false advertising.
Originally posted by indiramourn Actually, I think what Octa was talking about is money and time. You're limited time on this planet. On your deathbed will you be wishing you had spent more time at work or more time gaming?
Well with that kind of attitude I suggest you never preorder or start playing any game at release time.
I have yet to be sorry for any game i started and I played most of them. If I did not want to waste money and was unsure well its simple do not preorder and wait for few months so you can see player responses.
btw on death bed you will think about family lol not work or gaming.
Never forget never forgive well its should apply to: never forget NOT to preorder or start immediately after any game is release never forgive myself if i break never forget rule.
Some games recover some games become niche and still very nice so if that happens to AoC why would you retry it. ( especially if they give free time )
p.s. Most players are like sheeps and if any game improves and improves a lot they will be back. lol i remember all the drama Eve online had at release and 1.5 years into release.

While I agree with everything you have said, I think that at some point you have to give FC some credit for trying to appease the few customers who still are playing. I have been a critic of FC for some time now, but I believe that FC has been held quite accountable for at least most of their poor execution of this game by the loss of so many subs in the first six months.
I won't be going out and recommending this game to anyone, but for the few people who are still playing and enjoying AoC I don't see the point of making FC further accountable. Lost subs and lower than expected resubs are more than enough punishment. I do, however, believe that at the very least FC owes the gaming community a public apology for their DX10 fiasco.
Funcom couldn't just come up with server transfers, as people would have been furious for having to leave their cities behind!
.................
And Funcom having only rookies straight out of school?? Well if that would be the case than they have acquired a hell of gifted talented people that have pulled off real miracles with such lack of experience then.
Dude,
That first comment is absolute BS. Everyone I've ever talked to wanted merges as soon as possible dispite the fact that thye would lose their cities. Have you even been to official forums during the last 4 months? Half of the threads were people wanting merges.
Either Funcom devs were incompetent and it took them 4 months to do a relatively simple server merge, or they once again lied, hoping that people would come back by Christmas and there wouldn't be a need for server merges.
Read my post again. I didn't say Funcom has only rookies working for them. But they do have a lot of rookies.
There was this post in another forum by an FC employee where he talked about different problems regarding AoC launch. He explained how Gaute did some crazy reorganizing, promoting all the competent devs to 'team leaders' or something, which meant they had to sit in useless meetings, while the real work, the coding, was left to the rookies. I don't have the link for the post but I'm sure it can be found with google.
A server merge is NEVER simple. It's one of the hardest things to do. You have no idea what you are talking about!
Character transfers are peanuts compaired to merging two whole servers (wich are each very complex server clusters and databases with their complex data model) together.
Mythic went the easy way by just offering server transfers and then remove the origin servers from the server select list (these origin servers are still running.)
Wether or not Funcom should have started on the merge process sooner or just offer character transfers instead is debatable.
Gaute G. was allergic to the idea of merging servers, and as he departed in September and thus Craig stepped in not earlier then that date.
You cannot expect for Craig to just step in and directly start on the merging process.
The whole situation was a complete chaotic mess, wich Gaute left behind for him.
As new game director he first needed to bring back rest within the teams and restructure the processes to what he seems to work best and most efficient.
It was pretty much immediately noticable in how the situation at Funcom changed the moment Craig took over.
The quality of patches improved drastrically and the devs and QA were given their time to get it done and not having to release it with unrealistic deadlines like what was constantly the case under Gaute G.
Devs and artists are also human beings. And people work best and most productive when they feel relaxed, calm and are given the time to do their job in a normal manner.
Ofcourse a healthy dosis of stress sometimes isn't that bad. But it was appearant that Gaute G. pushed his team constantly over the edge, creating a panic atmosphere, wich showed in the horrible patches in may, june, july and august.
So with all this going on, it is safe to say that Craig wanted to finish and fix most important issues first, get his team and thus the game back on track and then start on the idea of merging servers.
And this way of planning paid off as the server merges went really smooth. I have seen lot worse in the past with lets say SOE.
A server merge is NEVER simple. It's one of the hardest things to do. You have no idea what you are talking about!
Actually it's you who doesn't know what you are talking about.
Give me a team of 10 competent coders and I'll do you server merges in 2 weeks. Maybe even in 1 week. Sure it's a complex process, but it doesn't take 4 months if you know what you are doing.
Don't believe everything Funcom tells you. They have their own agenda and Funcom as a company has been known to use lies as a tool to pursuit that agenda. I mean come on.. when starting the company, they even lied to the initial investors to get money. What does that thell you about the corporate culture of Funcom?
HAHAHA..... give me one company on the globe that doesn't lie (read persuade) to get money out of investors.
Seriously tho, it's getting beyond ridiculous now. I have explained more then well enough how the situation around Funcom was from an objective point of view.
Maybe I should refraise in what I tried to tell you, as you clearly just read one line in my whole post and skip all the rest:
Gaute G. was allergic to early server mergers. Period. It would have hurt his TOO big of an ego. No secret there. Everyone knew.
Craig started no earlier then end september and it's only logic that he needed time to get the teams back on track, restructure them to his liking. More importantly...the atmosphere within the Age of Conan teams weren't exactly very pleasant at that time. Gaute G. left behind one overstressed chaotic mess for Craig.
It was no secret he focussed on fixing the current pressing issues first WITHIN the game and released the new content update first.
And as far as I recall the mergers were announced end november. They ran into some issues in December, prosponed it and did it flawlessly in early january.
I have witnessed server merges before in other MMO's... and they weren't so smooth at all. So I think, even tho it might be late in your and other people's eyes, credit is due where it's due.
And when I looked at the forums (not just the Funcom ones), then people were very happy and pleased in how smooth the mergers went.
But whatever man. You clearly seem to have obtained an unrecovable trauma from them and are on some form of a blind hatred crusade against them, just like all the old SWG-vets still being on a blind hatred crusade against SOE for years now.

Ah.. so you're one of those "Gaute was evil and Craig is God" -fanbois? That explains a lot
What you say here is the "official story". You don't have to explain it to me, I've heard it before, I've played AoC since beta.
We've been bullshitted by MMO companies ever since they first appeared. Funcom in my opinion has been one of the biggest BS artists.
Gaute was not solely responsible for failure of AoC. There were no "mystery issues" with server merges, etc.
Funcom has lied before and will lie in the future. Too bad they get away with it because of blind (mostly norwegian) fanbois like yourself.

Well, first off, Craig, even though he was the biggest fanboy this side of the entire universe he did a good job for AO. I was there when AO was under the wings of GG, and I saw what Craig did for the game when he took over the reins. AO is actually moving forward now, a seed Craig planted, even though it still got it's faults and old bugs. Means (Colin Cragg) is a damn good game director aswell.
FC bs'ing the community is nothing new. They shat on the proverbial fan for ages. FC got a history of almost nazism moderation on their forums and clueless gm's banning for no reason at all.
One incident stand out in my mind. A few years ago there was this big tower war (hardcore pvp) and a shitload of players got permabanned for no reason at all cause they teamed with players who Funcom claim abused some organization exploit. Apparently jumping organizations (guilds) somehow made the countdown of when you could capture towers reset. Usually it's a cooldown on them. Ofcourse Funcom won't discuss exploits, even in private emails so bad luck if you where one of the unlucky ones and wanted to inquire what the hell kinda exploit you where accused of exploiting. Luckilly I stayed away from that one .
Another idiot thing they did was permaban the person who made the IGN-bot cause FC somehow got it into their heads that the bot broke some database code or whatever. Don't remember the exact details about that one, but suffice to say the uproar at the forums where almost deafining back then. Irony is that Amona (the creator of the IGN-bot) helped AO devs track exploits and security holes. An even bigger irony is that AO still depends on the bot today allthough it was heavilly reprogrammed by a few select players.
To put the icing on the cake, her bot is still being used by various organizations as the other bots available require you install all kinds of bullshit programs that the average user have no clue on how to use. Even with detailed instructions it's too hard for the average user. Easy always wins the day.
Amona, the creator of IGN-bot still deserve credit though. Even today, idiots like VHab, Iriche, Blondengy and Sebuda diss her bot. Pfft. You can say alot about the game, but forum drama we had enough to spare for everyone back in the glory days
To say GG was responsible for all the crap AO and AoC went through is false though. Remember, allthough he was the game director he wasn't alone in making decisions about the game's direction.

I agreed with everyhting but this.
Unlike Craig, who is merely Game Director, Gaute founded Funcom. Gaute had power and control over everything in both AO and AoC.

Errf the stories I could add to this list.
FunCom has sh!t on customers like no other business I have ever seen. Some of their most loyal supporters and most community active players have gotten banned plain maliciously. The details of the chatbot debacle ... errf makes me angry to even think about them. I probably know 5-6 people personally who were treated just as poorly with circumstances very similar, they were a huge loss to the community and FC was stupid not to offer them jobs.
As for Morrison, he did change AO for the better, but he wasn't really at the helm very long (maybe 15-18 months), he was also working on AOC part of that time, Gaute leaving wasn't the 1st day he had a hand in the game.

As for Morrison, he did change AO for the better, but he wasn't really at the helm very long (maybe 15-18 months), he was also working on AOC part of that time, Gaute leaving wasn't the 1st day he had a hand in the game.
Ofcourse not, but if I remember correctly Craig was a programmer/gamer back then and being that he didn't had too much to say in the overall design of the game. That was GG's job.
Craig started out as the Admin of AOVault at IGN. He made game guides for AO.
He was then hired to be the Community Manager of AO.
He then became Game Director of AO when Gaute left to work on AoC.
Craigs' rise in positions was due to a few key things:
1). He was a big AO fanboy from the beginning. He absolutely loved the game. A plus, I might add.
2.) He was willing to listen to the community ( even as Community Manager ) and was instrumental in making sure many complaints were brought to Gaute and the devs attention ( regardless if they did anything with the info or not ).
3). When he became Game Director, he continued to post on the boards and talk to the players the same way he did as a lowly Community Manager. And he improved the game based not only on his view as a Game Director, but his view as a Day 1 player. And he implemented fixes and content that were not only being asked right then and there, but concerns that Gaute had ignored time and time again.
But, even as Game Director, he still answered to Gaute. Luckily, Gaute was mainly focused on his new shiny baby turd so that craig was able to do things his way for the most part.
OKay, HI, im a player that really never paid attention to AoC during its beta nor during its release. I heard that it had a terrible launch from the site I frequent the most.....mmorpg.com.
Now, I hear the game has made great strides in fixing the number one concern of gamers...stability.
People are posting constantly that the game is great, fun, and growing. Great. Now those asshats that hold a grudge for its bad launch; please get over yourselves. Try the game again and rate it a second time. DONT be like SWG players and beat a dead horse for 4 years.
If Funcom had spent as much time fixing and putting into the game what they were hypeing for several months before and a few days before launch then I might concider it. But there track record says they hype things and send there fanbois here to due PR. Game is in trouble and I for one would like to see it stay that way. I spent over $1100 dollars on this game because of there hype and im retired and have time to get my pound of flesh but doing so with the truth.

How could you have possibly spent $1100 on this game??
All I can say is that you are all being way to hard on Gaute. He now works for me, mowing my lawn, pulling weeds, and other general lawn maintanence, such as keeping my backyard free of dog waste. With adequate supervision he does passable work and seems to have a decent work ethic. He is getting behind, however, so as soon as FC folds I'll get Craig out here to give him a hand. Spring is just around the corner, after all.
Gaute Godager never copped to the problems AO experienced because he's not a quality human being. If Sirillion hasn't sounded off about Gaute's mistakes, it means the exact opposite. It means he's showing respect to the guy who formerly held his position, and not laying blame or making excuses based on the past.

By upgrading his computer I guess :P
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC) On my radar: TSW, MO MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
everyone needs to get over their "funcom screwed me, whaa, whaa, blah, blah". i went through a SHORT period of that but im over it. i got the shaft just like everybody else. i bought 2 collectors editions and paid to play beta. but get over it people. i did. i moved on. in fact, i still read up on conan cause im open to coming back in the future if its something that i would enjoy.
I think most ppl agree Funcom screwed its subscribers with a release that will go down in MMO history with the likes of Vanguard and DnL. I personally pre-ordered AoC as soon as it was available on EB Games site, which was almost a year before actually release due to push backs of release dates. So I was VERY let down by what Funcom pushed out as a retail product, actually I was very pissed. So I can understand why ppl want their "pound of flesh". I think what bothers alot of ppl is that the rabid fan base and even web sites come to the defense of a company that, in their eyes "screwed them". I've seen "Game Corrospondents"(what ever that is) troll worse than the most ardent haters, so its not just one side of the issue continuing this soap opra.
I think alot of energy is being wasted on arguing with each other over a game that only has...what.....3 or 4 NA servers left, with low populations. AoC will never live up to its potential, and that we cant blame on each other, Funcom had the player base and failed. So personally I lay the failure of AoC at the feet of Funcom.

Good for you, having your pound of flesh too. Simple fact is not to be so arrogant and think that there are just 4 servers, it's a global game and has more servers than EQ2 or lotro. All NA servers are packed quite a few recently with a lot of disinchanted WAR players I noticed ready to give the game a second go.
I can never wrap my head around the hate mentality expecially all this time on and how much different the game is.

At this moment you will be better off investing time in Age of Conan, then in a game like Vanguard that is on Life Support.

This thread hasn't been done before.
It's so refreshing and original.

Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!
Never forget never forgive well its should apply to:
never forget NOT to preorder or start immediately after any game is release
never forgive myself if i break never forget rule.

Funcom couldn't just come up with server transfers, as people would have been furious for having to leave their cities behind!
.................And Funcom having only rookies straight out of school??
Cheers

Grammar nazi's. This one is for you.

Ofcourse not, but if I remember correctly Craig was a programmer/gamer back then and being that he didn't had too much to say in the overall design of the game. That was GG's job.

Yeah ok. You got a way better memory than I got obviously

Grammar nazi's. This one is for you.
MAGA
That's not as bad as some of the ex UO players. They're still drooling over UO as it was before Trammel was created back in April 2000!!!!
It means he's showing respect to the guy who formerly held his position, and not laying blame or making excuses based on the past.
einexile the meek
Vacuos, Winterlong, Vaciante, Eicosapenta
Atlantean, Tyranny, Malton
How could you have possibly spent $1100 on this game??
By upgrading his computer I guess :P
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
everyone needs to get over their "funcom screwed me, whaa, whaa, blah, blah". i went through a SHORT period of that but im over it. i got the shaft just like everybody else. i bought 2 collectors editions and paid to play beta. but get over it people. i did. i moved on. in fact, i still read up on conan cause im open to coming back in the future if its something that i would enjoy.
