MMO's have gone downhill ever sence 2004...
All the current day mmorpg's are crap, dont deny it we all know it...there all carbon copys with new feature X and different graphics.. a re-make of a re-make of a re-make
I, for one, am going back go consoles after waiting -YEARS- for a good mmorpg.
=finds his old gamecube out of his dusty closet he hasent opened in years and puts in supermario sunshine=
Ahh..supermario sunshine.. great game..great game.. beats the shit out of any mmorpg these days.
So.. with all that said, halp me buy my new console?.. sorry Ps3 fans, ps3 is out of my budget, plus i dont really like buying SOE products cause there going bankrupt..
So....poll!
Also: Anybody have an estimate when the next gen consoles are comming out?

So..am i the only one whos fed up with mmorpg's?
Nope your not the only one.
Doubtful I'll ever play another until ToR, and who knows how long that will last for me.
Boring genre nowadays.
More fun playing and modding Oblvion.
It's sadly true, there isnt much out there (waits for the flood of OMG PLAY DARKFALL). I'm really not pleased, i loved WoW when it came out,....however i just stopped my sub, and i constantly find myself going back to UO. Sadly even that has gone down hill with this AoS bullcrap. Yes I know there are purist UO people out there sayign UO:R ruined things, but sometimes i dont like gettin screwed by 10 people who decided to gank you. it was nice to travel in safety. But I have played the crap out of my 360 I love it. I cant recommend WII because everyone i know that has one gets sick of playing it...and honestly not many AAA titles on it. it's sad, but they focus more on gimmick than gameplay. I love my 360 just wish i had a connection to play on Live...
Yeah thats what ive heard about the Wii..
Thanks for the info :]
I'm with you, but I'm not quite ready to give up. I think 2009 could be very promising, with Jumpgate Evolution, Earthrise, Fallen Earth and possibly Darkfall coming out, I think this year looks really promising. If none of these games can come through for me, I'll be giving up on MMOs until I can make them.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
This is why i'm just waiting for the new EQ progression server.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill
I feel kinda the same way regarding the MMOs, I'm in US for a few months for business, which put me outa timezone of my friends and away from my gaming rig for a while, but strangely I don't really miss logging in that much, just spending time on my PSP, the new Star Ocean and bought a couple of 2nd hand jRPGs. I think I may stay MMO free until JG:E actually releases (unless DF will actually prove to be a decent game).
And I would go with the 360 just because of the selection of titles.
Subscribtions: EVE, SWTOR WOW, WAR, DDO, VG, AOC, COV, FFXI, GW, RFO, Aion
+plenty of F2P, betas, trials
Female Dwarf player: WOW, VG, WAR, DDO
.
Due to the recent economic crisis and spending cuts the light at the end of the tunnel was turned off. Sincerely, God.
Yeah...Jumpgate looks pretty good, along with Infinity and the new Star Wars mmo..
Idk about Darkfall..i was excited at first but after analization it kinda looks..gimicky
You only waited 5 min....give us time to see this post and respond silly!
To a point I am, they've all gone easy-mode:
Almost Entirely Solo {very few require long-term groups or they last long enough to kill one enemy and then everyone parts and goes their own way...lets stick together and get to know each other...isn't that what an MMO is about...playing together with other people!?}
No Death Penalties {come on I want to lose that hard-earned XP and even my levels if I screw up...will make me rethink what I did wrong or change my strategy!}
Stupid ! ? O {and other designs above NPCs heads indicating; hey come talk to me for an easy quest for mass XP so you can rush to the cap and stand around in ur L33t gear calling everyone else n00bs! Lemme find you myself by talking to all the NPCs and don't tell me exactly what to do and where to go!}
Hybrid Classes {Gah, go away already....I want to be a healer and support other players, not a healer that can solo the entire game without even a slight challenge and can beat the snot out of just about any mob.}
BoE, BoA {Why can't I resell my gear to other players after I'm done with it or give it to one of my alts!? So there isn't an overflow of gear make it all much harder to acquire or craft....make it worth something to have and display to others!}
Instances {fricken hell go away....the whole point of an MMO is to play together, not separate us into our own little groups away from others...make huge non-instances areas that any # of players can enter, but increase the difficulty and number of mobs the more that are in there to the point of requiring many groups to slowly work your way through.....Teamwork Please!!!}
Levels & Set Gear {get rid of them and make huge sandboxes where there isn't a mass L33t name calling competition and pissing match! Go the route of skill based and the only thing armor does for you is make ya look different, and remove the ridiculous mass stats on gear...there is no reason for a piece of gear with 20+ lines of text and stats on it. Let me earn those stats myself...}
Player/Guild Housing {stop making zones so small and confined....make huge open plains and mountainous regions that we can freely build our own homes and cities on, non-instanced and give them more purpose than just a place to display our trophies! Why can't I sleep there, or craft...or hold events for my friends/guild/random other players to get to know?}
Exploration {again with the small confined zones, its ok to make large areas with nothing in them besides well made designs and to show off the skill of the artists making the MMO. Many of us, me included love to just set out and explore and look at things, and many times die from being stupid, "I can make that jump!"}
...and many other things..I could go on for a long time, but stopping here!
No you are not the only one, but you have to keep in mind just because you feel certain games are crap does not make it a fact as you say with we all know it.
Seriously I dislike most MMORPG's but I can not say they are crap, the reason is people are enjoying those games even if I dislike them, which makes these game not be crap but just games that don't suite you....or me....
For concole, geuss you best of with a Xbox, it's cheap to buy these day's, compared to the PS3, from what I can tell from seeing in several shops there are more games on Xbox then on Ps3....(for now) this also means more barginbin sales of Xbox games. So you can pick up some older games aswell that still could be fun to play.
But never force your opinion, just share it, it can make a difference, though not always as sometimes we have people that don't even understand it when people share a opinion. And if you remained just with saying you find most MMO crap would be a opinion, but saying EVERYONE knows this is not. I mean you do see that even though you might dislike most MMORPG you can not ignore the true fact and thats there are people still playing these games.
I understant completely. I've tried a bunch, but I'm very, very picky about everything. My boyfriend hates MMOs, though. So, he's slowly getting me off of the computer and on to his 360. I've rediscovered Obilivion. I started a long time ago and never really got into it. But, now I'm hooked.
I'm not giving up hope on the MMOs though. I'm just waiting to see whats going to become of the next wave of games coming out soon.
WoW and all the crap computer users killed the MMORPG! I'm sorry but thats how it is!
Today we could have some great looking games, but to make money they make them look like cartoons so people with crap computers can play it. Todays games look like 10 years old games.
When I started to play MMORPG there was US, England, Scotland, France, German, Sweden, Norway etc players. Players that talk and type in English.
Now we have Russia, Poland and all the rest from that side of the world. Ingame it's now hate, hate, hate, hate. How fun is that? You type in English asking a question and you get back #¤&&%/ //&!""# ...how do you build a good community on that?
And most MMORPG are fantasy, it's so boring. How about Sci-Fi? Something like Fallout world? Or the old RPG Mutant? No.. Orcs, Elfs and dragons... b o r i n g...
Actually, no I am not sick of MMO's. And if you are, why are you on this site? I'm sorry but there is so much negativity on this site when it should be a supportive place for the MMO community. Thoughtful criticism or a wish list of what one hopes for in future MMO's is one thing. But I get sick of hearing how these games suck. Fine, if you feel that way go someplace else. I, for one am looking forward to a lot of MMO's coming out thru 2010.
By the way, I also enjoy single player games like Fallout 3 and Bioshock. I just love games and get tired of people pissing on them.

I agree with all of your points 100%. The thing I hate the most is soloing in an MMO, I'm okay with soloing every once in a while, but in newer MMOs you do it most of the time. It seems no one likes a good ol' fashioned group nowadays.
I'm not fed up though. Even though I really do prefer old fashioned MMOs where you gain levels as a group, a newer MMORPG can be really fun too. Darkfall for example. Darkfall seems like it could be a really fun game (whether or not it will be is a different subject), and its pretty much the opposite of the MMORPG that I usually like to play.
MMORPGs are changing, just like most video games do. Its not too often today that you see a new 16-bit, side-scrolling Metroid game coming out. Or even a Metroid game with similar gameplay for that matter. Its the same for any game.
Eventually, in the midst of all the new games coming out, an old fashioned side scroller that people love will emerge. The same goes for MMORPGs. One of these days, someone is going to make that old fashioned MMORPG (and it'll actually be successful), and plenty of people (myself included) are going to enjoy it. I'm just waiting for that to happen.
Currently on a quest to try every free-to-play MMORPG. Okay, maybe not every single one, but most of them.
You are not the only one but we have Darkfall and Tera now. And Mortal Online.
Welcome to the party. We meet on Tuesadays and Thursdays. There's coffee in the back and if you want alcohol it's BYOB.
Now, your first task is to learn how to keep one skeptical, apathetic, barely cooncerned eye on all new MMOs.
Oh, and don't waste money on a console, just pick up some non-MMO PC games. They still exist...
I voted 360, but I really think you should reconsider the PS3. Blu-Ray is the new video format, plus the PS3 looks to be a lot more reliable than the 360 with its RROD issues. And if you're open to using a new credit card, you can get a PS3 for $99:

As for the Gamecube, mine needs some love too. I still have a huge backlog of games for it I haven't even started yet, including Zelda: Twilight Princess, Baten Kaitos I & II, Fire Emblem, MGS: Twin Snakes, Paper Mario, Resident Evil 4, and Tales of Symphonia. Damn MMOs keep me from some great games!
Get an Xbox 360 + Mass effect and Halo 3. Since all MMOs are PVE grind turds today anyway that you play solo I find Mass effect is better than most games and all MMORPGs post SWG pre-cu.

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

I enjoy playing EVE. I will play other MMO's in the future, but if they all suck, in the end doesn't matter to me, because I'll always enjoy playing EVE.

I don't see it as an either/or thing. I play console games and single-player PC games for a break, but I usually quit those after a fix. I actually stick with the MMO world 'cause that's me hobby. I agree totally that we are currently in a long, dry, flat spot in the MMO world, and the economy means it will probably get worse (at least for USA companies), but I'll keep trying stuff looking for a hit.
Man MMOs have kept you away from some great games! Baten Kaitos was one of the best games i played on GC. I just picked it up a week ago and started playing again. Hope you play and enjoy it!
I still play my original XBOX....All the red ring of death stories scared me away from the 360.......I went with a Wii because I already had the original XBOX......WHen I want a game like Madden or NBA Live or a good RPG I play the XBOX.....When I want something a little more active I play Tiger Woods 2009, Sports Pack, or Wii Fit on the WIi.......
I played WOW preBC and have just come back. Started new server and new characters, leveled a new class to 55 and created my death knight, which is kinda like easy mode but it's fun and I am just trying to relax after a hard days work.
I have to say that I am really enjoying WOW at the moment. And they added dynamic shadows which really improves the look of the game from my perspective. With everything maxed out the game was running 30 to 50 fps. Since I got in Northrend though I turned the shadows down because I took a performance hit.
Once I get bored with WOW though I don't know what I will do. Hopefully the Star Wars or Star Trek mmo launches by then, as I am losing confidence in Chronicles of Spellborn and Aion. And Darkfall...who knows what will come of that. I hope something good....
But I am feeling a little pessimistic.
Idea idea... 16 bit flash based side scroller mmorpg
okay..yeah maybi not, but theroticially you could put the same gameplay of X game into Y game even if they have different graphics.
What ive personally seen is that mmorpg's have been too focused on graphics and have been using the same gameplay from other games that have been successfull (wow), or just trying to make a quick buck and copying everything fromo a sucessfull mmorpg (wow clone).
I personally, for one, wouldnt mind a 16 bit flashed based side scroller mmorpg, aslong as it had good gameplay.
Hey actually in a way it would kind of be refreshing.. no downloads.. no patches.. different graphics.. good gameplay.. no need for a 3k rig..
Sounds good to me
I am fed up with Fantasy genre MMO's. They all seem to be following the level/gear grind motif and I am sick of that. I don't have 40+ hours per week to dedicate to keeping up with a guild. So now I am playing EVE.
