Are you saying "they" in general or SOE? Because SWTOR is BioWare.
No fear this is the NGE 2...
no fear, this guy has no idea what he is talking about...

hahahaha!
well technically he doesn't...we dont know a thing about the gameplay, only thing he is doing is assuming.
I am right there with you OP. I too was a long time SWG player and quit about 6 months after the NGE launched. Gave SOE a chance to correct their mistake of the NGE but they were too stubborn to do so or I would have quit earlier. This game has been several years in development already as the "unannounced" mmo that bioware and Lucasarts were working on (but come on, everyone KNEW it was going to be Star Wars and most likely KOTOR based).
Yes I'm finally excited about an mmo again. After playing the now boring WoW since the demise of SWG all I've done is crave the days of killing stormtroopers in Anchorhead, or taking on a Rancor.
Also the best thing about this game....SOE WONT GET THEIR HANDS ON IT!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!
Bioware is a VERY well respected devleoper and got many game of the year honors with the original KOTOR. I suspect that if any game has a chance of unseating WoW as the #1 mmo (as far as subscribers go) than this will be the game to do it! But guess we'll just have to wait and see!!!!!
This game isnt being made with swg vets in mind.
Which is good in my opinion. It should be made with star wars fans in mind. While SWG in its infancy was an amazing sandbox game it really didnt feel like star wars to me. When I played KOTOR 1 and 2 I felt more immersed in the star wars universe. I hope they can bring that feeling to SWTOR.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
The game is going to be nothing like SWG pre-nge. It won't be sandbox. It'll be more like WoW with jedi. Not saying it won't be good. Just saying if you're an SWG pre-nge vet/fan, this game isn't going to give you what you miss.
I pray all SWG vets will find a home somwhere in SWtOR, I'm waiting to see if there's a bounty hunter class that gets missions on player force sensitives
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

I have to agree on this point. That whole part of TKMs and melee classes dominating fights just never seemed right in a star wars game. I remember watching one brawler in composite armour kicking the tale out of a whole squad of storm troopers and thought "what the hell is this?" The Star Wars experience was definitly lacking Pre-CU.
It's really simple. If you loved KOTOR, you should love this game. This will be nothing like SWG in any of it's many incarnations.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
Meh,
This vet is leaning towards Star Trek Online. I love star wars but I dont play games because of the IP. I play them for their features and TOR is sounding more and more like a wow clone.
If I want a good story I'll read a book. I play MMO's to make my own story
lol, yeppers.

Of course its gonna a WOW clone. That formula is what works, for some damn reason. If you see the developers video, first thing the one guy talks about is thinking up quests for a certain zone.
Damn quests again, over and over and over. Go here, go there. Too bad they can't make a SW game like UO was back in the day. Open and free to do what u want.
Plz don't say, then don't play blah blah blah. I played LOTRO for a yr and just about had enough of these damn quests, how do u guys do it? Grind this and that.

First, you have to had played some of Biowares games to get an idea of what they mean by story. If you havent played KOTOR or any of the Bioware games, then the experience is somewhat lost. What Bioware does provide better than any other game company is immersion. I actually feel like im that character and I didnt have to create a complete open world to do it. That does not mean I dont want one, that just means that they have the ability to make you feel like the character without an open world (sandbox). They have brought on some good people to their staff to help them with the Open world portion. Unfortunately, they have not posted any information on it.
So, it does sound like you dont like quests. Im not going to tell you not to play, but you can go play other games like WAR. I think the only quests you have to do in WAR are the public quests which no one does. So you dont have to worry... You can stay in their Scenario Instanced PVP world and level that way. Its completely mind numbing and all you have to do is kill the people in red. That is simple enough I think.
My point here is that a grind is essential in gaming. Leveling in some kind of way is going to be in these games. If its a story grind or a pvp grind its still going to be in a game. Its about how well they the developers dont make it feel like a grind. Any developer will tell you that progression in a game is hard, because you have to make it fun. Some do well in this area some dont. But I have a good feeling about Bioware, they have done well in this area in the past so im not entirely worried. I am worried about some of the graphics, but I dont think they are going to change it.
I still dont understand how you play a game for a year and complain about playing it for a year..... When you knew that you didnt like it. That baffles me!
Now I really don't have any interest in this game, but my kids liked playing Jedi Outcast and KOTOR so I've been following it for them and something has occured to me from reading all the posts & forums that keep referencing SWG, Jedi starter or not, Imp vs Reb etc... etc....
I'm thinking a lot of people are going to be very disappointed in this game, because they can't get past the "STAR WARS" in the title.
A number of poster's seems to hope that this game will be a pick up from where SWG left off and will fix the problems that exist/existed in that game or that Bioware will build upon what SOE started with (the idea/concept not the finished product). For others; like the Jedi starter class yes or no question, they see it as a chance to fix something they didn't like in SWG. And a few just don't seem to have a clue it's a different period.
I don't think it will be anything like SWG. Number 1 and I'm not up on the whole KOTOR mythos, but have read 2 of the Darth Bane books, isn't this suppose to be set when you couldn't toss a rock without hitting a jedi? The whole Jedi army vs Sith army thing? If so then how could you not have jedi as a starter pick? Number 2 I can't see any company building off a dying francise, especially when they have 2 sucessful pre-games to build off of. Take some of the better ideas yes, be that player housing or whatever, but not the whole concept.
Truthfully this is one of those games that just sucks you into reading the forums, even knowing you're not going to play it, just to see what new comes up.
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
It takes place approximately 300 years after the events of KOTOR, in which [SPOILERS] Darth Revan defeats his old apprentice, Malak and blows up the Star Forge.
TOR is about the Sith returning and starting a new war, eventually overthrowing the Republic and the Jedi retreat to their homeworld, Tython to begin anew war.
When people think of STAR WARS, the usually refer to the six films and the stuff surrounding the 40 some odd years in the film timespan. If people aren't so stubborn, they'd realize theres a millenia of Star Wars lore after and before the films.
These SWG vets also need to look at who the devs are. Its BioWare. Unless your hiding in a rock, they make the best story-driven games by far, KOTOR, Baldurs Gate, Mass Effect, etc. You guys need to realize theres more to online Star Wars experiences than your precious Pre-CU; which destroyed SW lore and wasn't that great in the first place.
You and thousands of others of us ex SWG refugees have been waiting for this game. Let's hope it deilivers! I think it will though. I have a lot of respect for Bioware and NO respect for SOE.
Sadly, this Star Wars game is going to be more singleplayer than anything else. Bioware makes great singleplayer games, not MMOs. You're going to have an NPC party, its going to be heavily story and instanced based, not the SWG you've been waiting for, or any of us really. Oh yeah, and it has item shops, meaning, if you want the good gear, pay real money for it.

lol. nice try. to bad theres Dev quotes stating the exact opposite of half of the things you listed.

just some clarifications from dev interviews.
I am an old SWG vet as well this looks ok but in all honesty not sure it is what we've been waiting for since SOE TFOW in SWG with the NGE. I just have such high expectations anymore for any MMO and none have delivered in recent years and none comming out look all that promising but we'll see. To me I believe you can have a great sandbox MMO which still tells a story at the same time lets you leave your own little mark in the world, I believe that the potential for magnificent combat where your not stuck on the ground as a jedi is there something more like the Jedi Knight games where you can leap over your oponents and if your in a jetpack you can do more than hover 10 feet in the air with it, and in space craft you could actually fly around in the hemisphere to blast an At-St or whatever before going into deep space to take out a Star Destoyer, I believe we can have a digital world with the same ruleset as our own and still be civil to each other yet the thrill of a fight always beckons at your feet, I also believe we can achieve a truely complex crafting system which should support and run a player based economy (SWG and UO done a pretty good job of that at one point, Before the "uber leet loot items"), maybe I expect to much though. I have played quite a few MMO's in the past 12 or so years and I see so much potential and so many that could be better yet lack that I cannot get my hopes up for this game yet. Not saying it will be bad just saying I think they are gearing more towards the general casual gamer and not a true MMO gamer but we'll see.
