I wouldn't pay $30 for the privilege of playing pre-CU. Actually, i wouldn't pay $5. Broken classes and didn't like the game mechanics......... group 'solo' hunting? Wtf was that?
I'd recommend going back and re-reading the OP, I think you missed something.
BTW solo groups were kind of weird of course, but they were sort of fun as well. I had many great conversations with people I'd likely not have met otherwise. They didn't do much for gameplay but they did a great deal for community.
I reread the OP. He did say "revamp." I assume this means a complete polish and reworking of the game to WoW standards - generally cited as the standard by which game completeness should be judged.
So we imagine preCU gameplay, without any of the bugs or broken gameplay, reasonably balanced, content in addition to open gameplay. In otherwords, the sandbox paradise we all imagined and wished for. Would I pay $30 a month for that?
Very possibly. Show it to me and then we'll talk.
I apologize for not being clear,"revamp"was a poor choice of terms. I,in NO!! way meant reworking the game to WoW standards. I meant I would pay $30/per month for a polished and complete Pre-CU.
For $30, I would expect the game to be totally supported, continual rebalancing where needed, additional expansions added regularly, the inclusion of new content fully tested and the proper implementation of all the old dynamics - unlockable jedi, TEFs, complex crafting, BF, three-bar HAM etc. But if they could do that then, sure, I'd sign up in an instant.
Thank you,hurbertgrove
You have added what I should have included in the original post. (Save unlockable Jedi)
I think the game should have strived to adhere to the canon of the timeline the developers chose to set the game in.
It is my opinion and the opinion of my small group of friends, all of whom played at launch that the "Holocron Debacle" as we like to call it was the beginning of the end of this game. Post holocrons, the community of my server Radiant turned against itself in the pursuit of holocrons and the unlock.
From my point of view that deviation from the canon really destabalized the Radiant community.
Here's what I remember... I remember having so much fun playing I would go for days on just a few hours of sleep a night. I remember making friends and logging in on Friday night on to have to stop when the server reset on Saturday morning. I remember the joy of playing a game I thoroughly enjoyed. I remember the outrage of waking up one day in a post-cu world. I remember the disappointment over the clunky gameplay changes. Of having to RE-LEARN what we had learned.. I remember not being a doctor anymore. I remember the disgust of MANY many many people who would stand outside Theed and Coronet starports macroing their disappointment at SOE. I remember SOE basically saying they didnt care what the people wanted. I remember reading on the SOE board Mr SMedly saying the game has changed, just deal with it. I remember thinking what a waste. All to make the game more like WOW. I remember MR Smedly later saying the CU was a mistake and the NGE was and is a much better imrprovement for the game. Again there was protest to go pre-cu.. Again I remember SOE not listening. And then the great change came. SOE had no interest in listening to the voices that cried out over years about going back to the way things were. If its one thing we should have learned by now is that SOE has no interest in the interest of the subscribers. It pays no attention to the people who pay to play the game. Well, that why I dont pay anymore. SOE have SWG more free game playing time than any other game out there. Why is that. Their subscriptions are rock bottom. Theyve lost so many players, but of course they'll never admit it. In their world they eat skittles and poop rainbows.. It's a really nice place. In their world SWG Galaxies still has millions of subscribers. That is why we are now forcing people of of servers with a free transfer service. To increase the population of their servers. My grandfather used to say "You give a man enough rope and he'll hang himself." SWG Galaxies has been swing for some time now.
If SOE let the license go to someone, then I feel sorry for the other guy, we all know how SOE handles stuff, to them, the game may be worth 10 mill overall, but, they would expect 100 mill for just the license. That means alot of work for the new owner before it even gets past day 1
But, to play the game that had me hooked for well over a year, and, to friends that came with that, I would sub for at least 1 year. To play the game I remember so well, and enjoyed for so long.
But, alas, thats not going to happen, its been 4 years and counting, and nothing has changed at SOE, their mindless, and over egotistical, eccentric, and shamefully excuse of "listening" to the public, the boastful, and over the top excuses of exciting and "new" gameplay.
No, SWG is dead, along with any possible return by me along with that
To pay a $30 sub? If SOE/LA would sell the rights to the Pre-CU to an independent developer for a revamp and relaunch? I,for one would be willing to pay. This question has been stewing in my mind for months....Am I alone? Feel free to speculate on the gross number of subs a revamp and relaunch might net. (At a $30 sub) Discuss....
The emulator is free. Forget $30 a month.
The only problem is that they make progress about as fast as the Darkfall folks. We can simply wait and hope.
I would pay the $30.00 in a heartbeat. I just cancelled my 3 accounts and deleted my 7 toons in SWG, I gave them 5 1/2 yrs to get it right and they (SOE) have a gigantic "fail" on their hands.
I played SWG shortly after release and quit right before JTL...a good way for me to judge what I'd want from SWG again is accomplished with some of my old FRAPS videos, I loved the game not for the star wars theme but for the freedom we seemed to have in the game, the nonlinear design, and the community. But I quit because alot of the game was broken and we were running out of things to do - even the large scale pvp battles on Starsider had really shrunk in numbers. I'm glad I didn't have to endure all the dramatic changes that came after my time.
For 30/month I'd expect -
All things SOE hadn't fixed to be completed.
All things that were not balanced to change (i,e, comp armor vs everything else)
New content, and on a regular basis, and some challenges (solo kills on dragons has to stop)
And then for 30/month I'd play but without loyalty. If it were invaded by wow kiddies then I wouldn't even play it for free, having to rebuild on memories alone may not be worth it - sometimes it may just be better to think back fondly and move on.
