i mean if its not for pvp...who cares how i kill 1mil more or less thesame looking mobs to be the highest lvl?)
i mean if its not for pvp...who cares how i kill 1mil more or less thesame looking mobs to be the highest lvl?) or maybe i have played to much daoc?
well it can be used in both. BUT......
FreeWorld Monsters are not like other MMORPG's. they will not just stand in one place and let you kill them. They strife around you, call for help, run away when they are taken to much damage and many other intelligent things.
whats the use of a real time combat system if monster just stand in one place and let you kick there butt? lol
i think the problem with a lot of people is they try to compare the system to all the other games. We are not a clone these are very new concepts.

If monsters run around and call for help, wouldnt that cripple mages? In most games I played the mage dies in 4 shots. They need to run, shoot, put up with monsters calling other monsters. It is a good idea, but balance will need to worked out.
Now I don't have much knowledge of freeworld (I didn't get in ) So the system might be totally different. If you could explain how leveling(or skilling) works in FW, I could actually comment.
Well as opposed to a FPS (first person shooter) It would be an FPM (First person melee) I can see some of the same issues where Lag will be the death of you. Its not a bad Idea I've actually played a FPM/FPS before called endless ages. It actually was a pretty nice game I was impressed. Its not a bad concept but hard to pull off without a hitch I'd say go for it. You have to start somewhere before you get funding for a Real game, most people come with general concepts and images but if you have a Fully fledged game to present, your all set.
I have played freeworld also.. in one of the earlier betas. i thought the combat system was a nice change from the generic "click on monster, click on spell/skill/whatever, repeat 50 gazillion times until dead" approach to combat. Leveling is nice... not true levels, more like you start off with most ( i think) skills, and the ones use simply get better.

well...Im glad you enjoyed playing one of a earlier tests
I think you will be shocked by all the changes we have done to the game. Make sure to come and give us a try this next phase
i enjoyed the eariler test too got very caught up in the worms i loved the way the mobs (ai) moved the chickens were kind of funny to, was surprised to see loot in the game at that point too
best part of it was being albe to explore the world lots of neat things to see and i am looking forward to yalls next stage of testing and wishing you tons of luck on this adventure!
Do you have any plans to have this game be controller compatible? It seems that the combat would be easier if you were using a controller. At least you wouldn't have to pound on your keyboard all day.
Everytime you post with more information about this game I keep thinking that this game would be perfect for xboxlive.

The Game is already controller compatible it is set up by default to work with the key board, but it can be 100% customized to work with a controller in the key config settings in the options.
Listen, the guy doesn't care what you play now, he wants an opinion on what you think about the combat system he is building. Stop with tthe moronic "well did you consider the mages?" And "in DaOC we did it like this" who cares? not him not anyone that reads this thread to see what is going on in FreeWorld.
I think it sounds like a very good idea. I hope you implement it and I hope I get a chance to play it and see how it goes.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
It sounds like a great idea. If you can mitigate lag well enough to pull it off, then kudos! It will be especially tough to do because all hit detection would have to be serverside, eating up cpu cycles (and more info exchange between the client and server). Doing it clientside would lead to rampant cheating. I may have to keep an eye on this one.

we already have a real time system in place and have had one for the last 3 years of Dev. with No lag problems. The changes i listed in the first thread are only improvements on our current systems. SO...with that said, its not really a mater of if it can be done..its a mater of how it should be changed to make it better then we already have in game. I honestly think my above mentioned plan will make it much better then it already is and we are always looking at player ideas to make it better and better.
thanks again guys

p.s. someone asked about cost above.....we are not releaseing a price as of yet....we want to keep the game as cheep as we can, but servers cost money. the team of guys and gals working on FW have families and regular jobs like most of you and without pay to work on the project we don't have much money for things like servers and stuff....So, when the game goes live we will need to make enough money to keep it running at lest. We have put 3 years of our lives into this and plan to put even more into it...... its all about the love of the game and not the money.

Well if you really have developed a system of runnning a full-blown comercial grade mmorpg with 1k+ concurrent users that mitigates lag effectively, then you are way ahead of the competition here. Hope to try it out sometime.
I also played freeworld in one of the earlier betas an i think you are doing well with it, i in freeworld was a bit of a griefing prick at those sand golems? i think they were, i kill stole from every other player and got told off by you i think.. my idea of pvp for that game would be to follow something like old school UO's way..
Zones - At the moment the combat system is great and seems to have alot of potential (from what i last saw) i would try to make the primary hunting zones and major populated places possible to pvp fight in (UO had its grey, red, blue) this would make things very interesting, people would have to get groups together to go and level in the best spots the majority of the zones should be able to pvp in. Really the soul purpose of pking is to shut the whining little kids up if you have just one zone they will just zone hop or something similar to avoid death, if you know what i mean.
Healing methods - What makes pvp interesting for me is many ways to heal yourself and keep yourself alive, UO had its healing potion, cast healing and heal kit system which was incredibly quick and you needed to be highly skilled to keep yourself alive and get away from large groups of pkz. AC had a similar system not as grand as the prior yr2000 system UO had, but pretty sweet. Even games like guildwars that are in production today have their 1 minute 150% health regeneration spells you cast on yourself aswell as using the heal spell when needed. The more ways to heal yourself, the better, the more interesting, the trickyer (this leaves a large challenge in keeping ur chr off the ground). This leaves room in future for kool spells like poison, curses, just spells that will nerf or slowly kill your enemy aswell as the major damaging spells. UO's was energy bolt and explode both would hit within the split second of one another... as explode had a 3 second delay on it
Death drops - drop everything! hehe this makes killing people profitable and fun just drop as many items as possible, i don't know how this worked in the original years of UO but it did. I guess you put your best stuff in the bank if you did not want to lose it, however UO created trammel and then bonded items (this didn't work for me) seemed to get more people playing though =
The future - you have guilds and guild wars such as the Chaos/Order based system UO had.. You would have guilds defending their hunting grounds. lots of stuff, you could also consider a system where killing people can improve your skills/level your character just by pvping and killing one another and getting something out of it other than just the pleasure of killing another chr =P.
To tell you the truth if you pulled out a game with just a uniqley new or similar impliments if not better to what i have said PVP/combat system (which freeworld seems to have already combat wise) nm what the game looks like man id play it.. i know about a thousand other people who hunger for the same thing. My ideal game is similar to a shoot em up that you gain stuff other than stats... and a 5:1 ratio of kills for deaths, that bores me i get nothing out of it.. a game i can kill people and still progress in the game other than just wasting my time (getting no new items, nothing..) is really what i need
Goodluck man, you could make that game awesome
if your interested in what i have had to say msg me and i can give you some more in depth ideas and how they could/would work.. i have played soooo many MMORPG's and beta tested sooo many im searching for something i just don't know what yet

so will there be a /stick included in that idea?
what about multi combo hits? i.e. one style then another added to give "added bounese"
will there be different animations for different skills?
will it be only mele, or other skills also avabile like in mutli skills
swords/axes/ hand to hand?
/me feels so ignored
