Does it still have that quasi-fps type combat with the Benny Hill animations and that ugly ass, clunky and unituitive UI?  If the answer is yes then its still crap.

BTW, that was a rhetorical question because I already know it still has all of it.

True, but old or new it remains a fact that cannot be ignored.

Another fact is that the Trading card game is utter, utter wank!

I have no clue what was there pre CU/NGE, since never played SWG. Now I gave it a try and I have fun.

It's probably best for you that way.  If you had any idea of what once was possible with SWG in the Pre-CU/NGE days, you'd be disappointed.

A couple hundred thousand did, and we left.

    Too true...

Particularly in the case of a Star Wars IP.  Tell me what Star Wars fan wouldn't really really WANT to like this game?

You get a 7 day free trial, no strings.  Those 2 things are enough for ANY decent game to get off the ground.

The notion that the reason it doesn't is because of a bunch of ticked off vets convincing people not to play is pretty much an insult to anyones' sense of free will.

Well... If you all look on the bottom left hand side of the origional SWG disk case. In small fine print, the words "Game Experience May Change During Online Play". I think SOE took that small print a tad too litteraly dont you all agree?

Now what I don't understand is why didnt they also put a label notifying customers that over the game experience changing, there is also possibility of  a need for a label along these lines "Entire Online Game Could Fold Ontop Of Itself Like A Shitty Grilled Cheese".  in fine print of course

I played the original SWG when it was first released.  It wasn't a complete product at the time.  Over the first 9 months, SOE did a good job with the updates and getting rid of the bugs.  By the time the Combat Upgrade came out, I was really into the game-- playing nearly 4 hours/day.  I had trepidations about the CU but was pleasantly surprised.  It actually did improve the game.  Then with the NGE (Nov 2005), the game came to a screaching halt.  It was unplayable and no longer fun.  SOE tried to dumb down the game but instead ruined.  What bothered me most about the NGE was the fact it killed good crafting-- weaponeers and armor smiths.  I was no longer able to get the weapons I liked.  I hung for 2 more months then gave up the game.  I came back several years later and the game was still crap.  I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt by starting over, but I didn't want to waste my time redeveloping a character that I knew would be hollow when compared to what I had before.  I just purged SWG from my computer, and I seriously doubt there is anything SOE can do to get me to come back.  After their screw up with SWG, I'm highly skeptical of any MMOORPG set in the Star Wars universe.  I'm looking forward to the Star Trek On-line game.  I hope they do their homework and get it right.

That line you are referring to applies only to the ESRB rating system, like T for teen and M for mature.  A game can be even be E for everyone in its single player mode but if it has an online component that allows you to play with others that E rating gets thrown out the window because as we all know the internet is full of assholes and if they swear or use racist/sexist comments then the rating isn't the same.  But since theres no way of nowing how well behaved other players will be, they place that "Game Experience May Change During Online Play" warning on the game.  It has zero to do with whether or not the company changes how the game is played.

Ya thats just lawyer garbage, its supposed to be a umbrella to many things that may be not to the customers likeing.   Most all games that you can play over the net has one, BF line of games use it and so do alot of the FPS not just mmo/rpg.

    The reason...

"Previously, the game was unabashedly complicated, appealing to mature, reflex-challenged gamers with its strategic combat style and deep skill system, which allowed players to carve out profitable, powerful niches as entertainers, architects and politicians......"

    And the truth...

"We really just needed to make the game a lot more accessible to a much broader player base," said Nancy MacIntyre, the game's senior director at LucasArts. "There was lots of reading, much too much, in the game. There was a lot of wandering around learning about different abilities. We really needed to give people the experience of being Han Solo or Luke Skywalker rather than being Uncle Owen, the moisture farmer. We wanted more instant gratification: kill, get treasure, repeat. We needed to give people more of an opportunity to be a part of what they have seen in the movies rather than something they had created themselves."

    Thus we have :

make the game a lot more accessible to a much broader player base.

It's our fault. We apologize we were not 12 millionX15 bucks per month.

    There was lots of reading.

Reading is bad and never fun.

There was a lot of wandering around learning about different abilities.

My feet still hurt from climbing mountains.

give people the experience of being Han Solo or Luke Skywalker rather than being Uncle Owen, the moisture farmer

I grew weed and i was much happier than han solo or luke.

more instant gratification: kill, get treasure, repeat.

A nice lesson for real life until we die.

be a part of what they have seen in the movies rather than something they had created themselves.

Never be yourself. Even in games.

Thanks for reading and keeping this for your records, since it's a proof of what kind of people rule any kind of industry these days.

SWG used to be fun....I've tried the trial plenty of times during NGE (one month ago at the latest) and to me it hasn't improved that much. Can't wait till SWGEMU gets fully released

In many, many ways, both of these statements are correct. However, good luck convincing anyone in here of the first one.

So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

Well as long as the NGE is still in place it doesn't matter how much more "fun" it is than it was on November 15, 2005.

Good luck convincing anyone in here of...oh wait they already *are* convinced. Having fun trolling the vet forum?

I have one thing to say to the OP...

    ...80 foot tall Wampa...

SWG's NGE....worth shooting yourself in the face to stop the vomiting.

    That...is the truth.

I find it odd that this thread was posted while pretty much ever former player had a free month and a half of free access to the game.  The truth is that SWG is still the worst MMO on the market.  Some content has been added, a lame target lock system has added, and WoW's talent system has been added.  None of the additions changes the fact that the combat system is completely unfun.

Crafting has been changed from focusing on creating items to being much more like WoW's enchanting system than an actual crafter.  The only changes in graphics have been a massive increas in obnoxious particle effects and making the human and zabrak characters look like long term crystal meth users.

The fact of the matter is that there is a number of people so enamoured with the Star Wars IP that they continue to play a game that many of them will even admit they don't really like.  The only thing SWG has going for it there are graphics that resemble things from the original three Star Wars films.

If having Stormtroopers in your online game is more important to you than having fun playing it, then Star Wars Galaxies is for you.

Regardless, the majority of the once loyal playerbase left this disaster of an MMO after the NGE.

The last bit of satisfaction about us leaving due to the NGE is that SOE / LA expected for us to be quickly and easily replaced by some onrushing crowd of rabid, simple minded players.  This of course never happened.

Those disloyal nitwits obviously gave 2 s**ts about current, PAYING customers who stuck with the buggy game.  They pretty much had this frame of mind.

$15 longtime paying customer = $15 prospective paying customer

Well, their gamble to my glee failed miserably.  SOE & LA said "F**k You" to existing playerbase at the time, "We can get it even better here."

    The idiots obviously failed.

So those that left can look back and have the last laugh.

"No, F**k YOU, SOE & Lucarts."

Honestly even if you haven't tried the game and think you'll find fun through the free trial... you are wrong. man you are stuck on a space station not even connected to the real world. I hated that fact! For what little there is left in SWG let the free trial users at least taste the instant gratification the producers were hoping for... or are they scared that maybe people will get all they will need from the instant fun they get from jumping right into the game.... man... such a sweet game.

Our hope now rests in the hands of Bioware. May SWG be used always as the kid star wars and the real men and women live under the true, complex, and amazing world of Star Wars.

I the more I hear about SWTOR, the more I hate it.   It will be nothing at all like a pre cu type game or even a sandbox game.  Seems like it's going to be very very very quest heavy and you even get a NPC group to follow you around.  I hope I'm wrong, and I'll definitely try it out...but I see another Age of Conan with this game.
