Well, you just missed the Guildwars world preview event... but It has very strategic combat which is much less level dependant than other games. Also PVP is very easy to get into, and people dont have to wrry about being killed by random people.

  • OrccOrcc Member Posts: 3,043

DnL = dark and light, one of the few innovative new MMORPGS coming out. As for guildwars, you missed some awsome PVP, 4v4, 8v8, even some games with up to 8v8v8v8v8v8!

It also is really good for casual players since you are constantly improving your skills whether you're logged in or not.

I also would say Guildwars. You don't have to wait or search for your PvP. Just go to the "instanced" 8vs8 arena and you got your PvP. And besides the PvP there were also missions, explorable areas, guild vs guild PvP area. I personaly will get this game for when I feel like PvP'in some when I want to get off EQ a lil image

If you want some hardcore PvP, none of this pansy-ass crap (image)

    Look towards Mourning & Darkfall.

Also AC1 darktide was the best PvP i've played so far.

Looking for team-based go for Dark & Light.

Looking for an odd & new approach (expect odd rewards. And no penalty) look at GuildWars.

Shadowbane is what you are looking for. Very fast leveling so a casual player can compete. And an R4 can easily beat an R7 if he is more skilled

When reading the criterias you gave, the first thing that popped in my mind was GuildWars. Alltho it is sceduled to release 1Q 2005, it is still worth the wait.

And btw, PvP is rewarded. Can't go into details tho, for several reasons

requires more skill than dependant on class and items

       - Star Wars Galaxies ranks the best one in this area. Any player can kill any player. No matter if one has been playing for 1 year, or the other for 1 month. Every vet player can be killed by any 1 week old player. This does not concern Jedi. But there are 30+ OTHER professions in SWG. Ignore Jedi, do not play intending to be Jedi, and the game will be fun. SWG is 10000000000000% skill dependant.

      - Anarchy Online is the originator, creator, initiator image, of making it so lower level players can kill off much higher level players. New, and old, MMORPGs are copying what AO did. Including SWG which took it even further. But AO is still nice in this area of making it so much lower level players can kill off much higher level players. AO is 50% skill dependant/50% Level dependant.

     - EvE is worth looking at also. It is 100% skill dependant, but in a unique way. It has a very high learning curve aka it is a thinking person's MMORPG. Play it only if you have a brain and enjoy using it all the time. image  (Unlike most other MMORPGs in which one immediatly starts hacking and slashing.)

     - Asheron's Call ..... on their PvP servers. AC is roughly 50% skill based/50% Level based. The graphics are a bit dated, but they are still nice enough to make the game playable. AC has a very nice tight knit community. It is still not too hard for a newbie to start if they treat others as they want to be treated.

lower levels can be competitive (i could play 10-15hrs a week max)

      See my above answers.

lots of variety and preferably rewards for holding your own clan or something of the sort... or just a reason to PK.

      - SWG fails in this area. The only reason keeping SWG from being the best ever MMORPG. There are minor reasons to PvP in SWG. If you join a faction, and declare overt, you get badges which you can use to get special items only your side can get.

     - AO rules this area. This is what currently makes AO the BEST PvP game out. You kill other players to control land. You can ALSO defend your land while you are offline! (this is what make's AO better than DAoC. And blows away SB). You can actually change the game world map.

     - DAoC gets special mention. There is a reason to PvP, but alas you must powerlevel to level 48-50. And if you or your guild is offline, there is no way to defend what you own.

     - Others have mentioned SB (Shadowbane). Sorry, but there is tooo much negatives about that game that outweight the positives. Plus SB does not fit the majority of your criteria.

please let me know of any you play and think are great or ones you have heard great things about... thanks!

Based on your critieria, there are only 3 MMORPGs out right now, that have been proven which you should check out:

     1. Anarchy Online

     2. EvE Online

     3. Star Wars Galaxies.

    ---------    ----------        ---------------

     4. Asheron's Call (on their PvP server)

     5. Ultima Online (on their PvP server)

You are talking about SWG? The game that use to be ruled by pistol whipping?

I have a feeling alot has changed. But I got the quite distinct impression that no matter amount of balancing, the only way a 1 week old player could kill a 1 year old vet is because some people can max out in a week & a half.(Not sure the exact time now. Considering I know hunting spots vary. But unless the game has completely changed from its base concept. Leveling is still similar to SB. As in extremely quick)

I did not get the impression that game was skill based at all. In fact I found it was very cookie-cutter and caveman with "special moves."

I'm not sure if it's arround anymore (I've forced myself to not find out), but Jumpgate was (again, not sure if it's still around) probably the best skill-based MMO PvP game out there.

Guild Wars is a cool game, and I'll probably end up playing it alot, but it isn't really that skill dependent. Building your guy right and spamming your skills properly is about the extent of the skill it requires. Heck, WoW requires more PvP skill than Guild Wars. But, Guild Wars is geared up for really intuitive PvP and excellent group battling. It's just not as skill-based as alot of people seem to think it is. Even is much the same. Tactics play a decent role, but you're still just auto shooting people and using skills at certain times. I guess it really depends on what you mean by the game requiring skill.

I would say the mmorpg that i have playd with the best pvp is Endless Ages, and with the new expansion comming this year (i have tested and can affirm to it's awesomeness) it will get even better.

WoW. You start to enter contested territory on quests around level 20, which does not take long to reach. The honor system rewards you for killing in PvP by giving you and your faction status, etc.

Vendetta online is a very nice game with skill based PvP. There is NO dice rolling what-so-ever. It is basically a FPS, but the skill is based more on out-flying, and anticipating your opponent's moves, than pointing and clicking faster (like typical FPS games). Check it out.

As much as I love Shadowbane, and as much as I think it's the best pvp game out there, the community is starting to dwindle, and if you haven't gotten started in it already, there are very limited options in terms of guilding.

On a side note, most R7's can destroy R4's without blinking an eye.  Easy.  It's almost twice the levels, what do you expect?

-on a side note to the side note, the game isn't about 1on1's.  Siegeing and groupwars are indeed the name of the game.  Even then, most people don't like R4's on their side unless they're considered "bait".
