LFGame - Hellgate: London/Tabula Rasa-style (not necessarily Sci-Fi)

OrionSXOrionSX Member Posts: 21

Hey all, hopefully someone here can help me. I'm looking for a new MMORPG to play, seeing as HG:L shutdown and TR is soon to follow (and has crappy magic...). I'm looking for something that real player skill has a part in; I don't want a game where some level 50 punk with a "build" has the best mage in the game. Basically, I want twitch based. Something where you have to aim your spells, like ES4: Oblivion. It'd be great if it was sci-fi-ish, with guns and what not, but doesn't have to be... but it does need a dedicated mage-class character, or a character/class that is more proficient at magic then others. I really enjoyed Oblivion, but its spells got quite old after a while, what with them all looking the same... (5 damage Fireball looks the same as 100 damage Immolating Blast... wtf?!)

I don't know if such a game exists but hopefully you guys can help me find it. Thanks in advance! Oh, and make Acclaim get their crap together and release Spellborn, already. That game looks to be pwnage.

I know what you mean, i loved Hellgate London and i would suggest you Guild Wars, dont think is like other games, in gw you can have all the abilities you want soon, you can also reach the highest level and the best armors in 3-7 days, but that´s just the begining because what really counts here is how you play and team work, i don´t know if you liked the idea or you wanted a mmorpg with more action.

I was completely spoiled by HGL's action WASD tritchbased gameplay controls, and find it hard now to play any new mmo's that are "point-n-click".  Tablula was fun too but not as much as HGL was for me.  I miss HGL so much now.  However, in light to the question, I was trying to check out Neocron 2 as that supposed to be FPSMMORGP like hellgate but massive.  The only  problem is I had problems creating an account to try it out.

In topic of the subject header, can anyone recommend Neocron 2 or not as a replacement to those who like HGL/Tabula style worlds to play in?

so you must either obsess over the game so much you have no life, or you must just hate the game. why dont you grow up and have some patience?

look he said he wanted a style where you aim your spells like oblivion. and thats what darkfall has. yeah true he said it would be great if it was sci-fi-ish but it didnt have to be. im just stating that as of right now there is no game to my knowledge that has what he is looking for. but there will be.

Definitely try D&D Online if you haven't played it in the last year. The combat is even faster and more furious than HGL or TR.

If you try it, don't let the newbie island fool you. Combat on the newbie island is overly easy, but it picks up after you get to the city.

Darkfall seems like a good bet....

However.. I recommend you give the Dungeons and Dragons Online trial a shot ( www.ddo.com ), as that game has the dungeon properties of Hellgate: London (except the dungeons in DDO are SUPERB and you will love them, hopefully), there is no auto attack, and most of the spells you aim or place (via a reticule).

Try the trial, you've got nothing to lose.

Alright, thanks for the responses, guys. Darkfall does look awesome, but from the sounds of things, it looks to be vaporware in the making, and I doubt it will ever amount to much. Even if it does, I want something to occupy my time while waiting... I'm gonna try and get an account created for Neocron; it looks pretty close. I'll look into D&D Online too, but as far as the D&D series goes, its mostly dice rolls and statistics. I want an MMO that reduces the dependence on level and stats to make a skilled character. Being "good" at a game shouldn't be defined by a number in the same game, it also needs to be more player-centered. As for whoever commented about "First Person Shooter," I do enjoy FPS games; but what I want is a combination of FPS/MMORPG. Fallout 3 was close, and HG:L was spot on, except for its horrendously bad graphics and unorthodoxly high system requirements... seriously, Tabula Rasa looks better AND runs better on my laptop then HG:L's single player game does. Pretty lame if you ask me. And soon TR will close so I can no longer enjoy that either.

Mass Effect was also very cool; now if they'd make an MMORPG version of it while keeping the FPS/3PS elements, I'd be all over that. Same with Fallout and Oblivion.

Another good comparison in my opinion would be Bullet Witch, where you can aim your spells and such. Only problem was it was more 3ps then rpg, as most of your skills were unlocked at a certain point in the game, not as you leveled.

Anyone have any other suggestions while I try and get a Neocron account made?

I agree, i've played DDO quite a while ago, and it should help you get over your HGL fix.  It's really fun game and if you're in a party w/ buds even more so. :)

Also, just slightly off topic, I had some problems trying to create an account.  I even posted here in the Neocron thread about it.  Let me know if you succeeded on that, as I'm very curious about Neocron as their website says it's FPSMMORPG.  And it's supposed to be the first cyberpunkMMORPG.  At least that's what it says on lots of reviewed sites I've checked.

Good luck on your account, let us know if it worked.

Well, the account creation issue is apparently linked to Paypal. Apparently the companies security certificate with Paypal has expired, and now no one using Paypal can create an account, even a free trial. Ironically, their other service, Click2Pay, incorrectly reports my IP address as being outside the US, and refuses to let me sign up. >.>

I've contacted both Click2Pay and the support service for Neocron. I'll let you know what turns up. In the mean time, try signing up for a Click2Pay account; from what I can tell, its free, so at least you can use the free trial. They won't use my IP Address, maybe they'll take yours.

Yes sir, that is exactly what happened to and I posted this here in the Neocron thread somewhere.  The thing is if you can't create a game account, then you can't link it to Neocron's forums account, then you can't even post the problem to let Reakktor know this is happening.  It's too bad too because I think that title could have been a good replacement, if not better one for HGL.  I saw a video of some spy class type go invisible, and wait for some player to leave his appartment, and then he hacked it and stole the guys stuff... I mean how much more cyberpunk is that!

Well again to the OP, if I can do it, I hope he tells us how so that the rest of us can try it out

Okay, I tried D&D Online, and its definitely not my cup of tea. For one, even being a live-action MMO, it still revolves around skills being determined by DICE! Wtf?! This is a COMPUTER GAME, not a table-top game! Anywho...

Since Darkfall isn't coming out anytime soon and Spellborn I'm still waitin on the US release of, lets see if you geniuses can help me with this one.... I want an MMO where the mage's standard attack is ranged, a la Guild Wars or Archlord. Those are the only 2 I've found so far, so you know which ones not to list. I mean, come on, who's the genius who decided that all mages/wizards have cool, glowing staffs and powerful spells, but still have to run up to their target to fight? Duh... I personally think wizards should be more ranged, especially given their lack of armor. Also, being able to attack while moving would be nice, like LOTR:O or Requiem. Any suggestions?

Only game i can think of is Neocron but that porbably isnt a option since the game has been going down hill for like the past 2 years or more. It never really got bug fixes after awhile and last i checked the account cant even be made so you can't play unless you still have a account. But it really seems like something you would maybe like since its first person casters can and should be moving while fighting and aiming. Only thing would maybe be the fact that aiming is more off and slower to recover the lower you skills with the weapons. But thats normal in things like this.

Face of Mankind would all so maybe be of interest but it fell apart awhile ago. Think they plan to re release it tho or something to that effect.

  • OrionSXOrionSX Member Posts: 21

Yeah, Neocron 2 is still not accepting new members for the trial if you use Paypal, and Click2Pay is or UK customers only so I'm screwed, unless someone from the UK wants to help me get into the trial ^_^.

The game where dice rolls, stats and other stuff besides your skill is mattering (at least it matters least) is Guildwars.

As far as I seen there is no good FPS MMO right now, I would keep my eyes out for Mortal online however.

  • OrionSXOrionSX Member Posts: 21

Guild Wars isn't an MMO, its the video game equivalent of driving a bike around your city block repeatedly for hours on end. I mean, lvl 20 level cap? Come on! I want my mega-super-uber skills do damage in the thousands, not the 80s!

kinda of topic i supose but...

The lvl 20cap in guild wars works for it, the way i see it, it gets you into the game itself faster its not about uber duber numbers or grinding for lvls its about playing through the storys and the PvP that has so many options and ways you can do it...

  • OrionSXOrionSX Member Posts: 21

*Cough* It took me less time to get to level 30 in Archlord then it did level 15 in Guild Wars.

Guild Wars is a piece of shit, but so is HG:L lol i cant believe i wasted my money buying that.

But anyways have you tried out CoH/CoV both veeery fun games of course it takes awhile to lvl in that but its fun being a hero... or a villain!

Keep an eye out for Fallen Earth.  They just went into closed beta.  Looks like it will be right up your alley.

It's gotten to the point where some MMOs have been reduced to little more than success dispensers. Don't think. Don't challenge yourself. Do as little as possible... but still be rewarded for it. Yeah.. *that's* fun.

Guild wars not skill based?  YOU FOOL!

Have you ever played a mesmer?  Have you Tanked without an agro bar?!  Have you ever played a game where you can't wtf pwn everyone because their levels lower than you?

Have you ever had to memorize over 500 skills and realize which ones work best together and identify combo chains for at least 2 or 3 other classes which your current build is responsible for?

The smarter people you fight on GW the harder it is, period.

True, it doesn't relly on player skill as much as an fps, but then again, what does an fps relly on but reaction timing?  Eh?  A bit of premeditaion as to where your foe will appear, then it's all mindgames.  These are definately present in GWars.  Games like WoW where aggro is spelled out for you, where you get every PvE encounter spelled out for you with little variables those games are the ones less "skill based".
