Curious about haters

ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495

I am not trying to bait any trolls, or argue about whether or not you think Darkfall is the worst game ever.  I am honestly curious.  I am a very optimistic person and anything negative in my life I usually just stop doing it or avoid it altogether.  I get really excited about MMO launches as they are the most fun I ever have in gaming.  I have experienced tons of them and every one has been worth the 50$ price tag.  Even if I quit in a month there is usually more fun to be had than many other games imo.  (I wasn't there for D&L launch though.  ).  After that month though if I am dissapointed I write a review about why and move along.

I guess I wonder what draws you guys to these forums(Not just DF)?  I see it around every launch since back in 2003, and even though it has ramped up exponentially since then the same question still applies.  I am not talking about basic trolls and trolling, but about the very serious and emotionally involved posters.  The ones that go out of their way to express dislike and hatred towards companies and games both released and in development continuously.

With a released game why do you feel the need to continue to hate on it, and bash everything it encompasses and their entire fanbase?

With a game in development why do you swear it to be doom, gloom, and epic failure?  Why do you grow so much dislike for something that isn't even available yet?  This has happened with many games far before there are even adequate details to make a judgment like this.

I know these questions all won't apply to each of you, but one of them does.  We all know that you aren't really trying to save someone from pre-ordering the game or wasting their money.   I just wonder what you have invested that brings you back again and again to spread negativity instead of just cutting that negativity out of your lives and focusing on forums that actually interest you.

I am not asking you to change, leave, or anything of that nature.  I just am really curiuos about what your motivation is.

Well , i have read most of the darkfall forums here and i can say a good part of the real haters , where fanbois once.. look it up, i was surprised. the one thing i don't like is when fanbois say this or that and then something happen to prove them wrong they dissappear  and you get a new set of new accounts.. like we don't know you started over and acting all new and hyped lol..But i will agree anygame that fails is a bad note for all MMo, but the sad part is there are companies out there that do it .. why i don't know and is bad.. i love new mmo myself

A lot of people got offended by spam on their own game's forums reguarding how amazing this game was going to be and went all crazy vendetta on the whole "Darkfall Experience". Can't really blame them, spam is pretty annoying in any format.

If DarkFall devs wanted you to admire their art work, yes games are a form of art as well as business, they would have released much more information on it. One of the main purposes of creating something, is often to share it. What happens when your kid draws a picture of the family in crayons and shows it to you? you gonna slap him across the face? If you get offended when ever a team gets together and creates a source of entertainment, aka games, then you clearly have your hobbies mixed up. You seem to see everything as black and white, fanatic or not, you yourself are a fanatic if you go to such extremes.

If everyone kept an open mind and took it at face value, not judging, and they either enjoy it or not when its released the world would be a better place. Right now you are the same as the people you get overly angry about, and from what I have seen of your posts, you tend to categorize everyone that does not agree with you as a "fanatic". For the entertainment value of course.

Why do fans post on forums promoting a game?  They should just wait and see what the developers release and not bother to hype it.

They do it because it entertains them to do so. They defend it because they enjoy it.  These are forums and this is what they are for.

"Haters", which you frequently confuse crtics and skeptics for, are normally people who don't believe in the promises the developers (and fans) make and enjoy disputing those statements on forums such as these. (remember again, this is what forums are for)

Many of us are bored at work, we don't care how many times we respond, in fact, we're not rabid haters with any vested interest or hatred towards the game, however we do enjoy a good debate and will do so ad infinitem.

OP frequently has made posts like this trying to "understand" peoples hatred for DF (or any other game) and doesn't understand he's one of the people who appears to have a fanatical interest in the game (despite his prostrations that he's just an interested observer)

I'll turn it around this way, why do you care if we bag on it here? MMORPG.com is a such a small proportion of the gaming world, it certainly can't be having much of an influence on people's buying decisions. (otherwise, no one would be playing WOW right now)

it goes both ways. People come here to hate the game just as much as some fanboys go out to promote it. If one is spam, then so is the other. Two wrongs dont make a right. Hoping a game fails because someone out there is getting a boner over it, is not logical. Its just stupid.

I am not calling you stupid, but rather some of the actions shown in this forum as well as the logic used...on both sides of the fence... Your selective reading didnt pick that up apparently. You follow by spinning your own story via response. You guys are all the same in that regard.

Chalk it up to the principles of "troll". They enjoy attention, they attack a game with a fan base that was proven to be rabid by the multi forum spam. The fan base proves said devotion to game by attacking troll. The troll has gotten attention he so desires and will launch any kind of attack upon the fan base to continue getting attacked in return. Where the breakdown between the hater who were truly offended by the assaults on their forums and the ones who are simply trolling for attention occurs is where you describe the ignorance of positive incoming news, which is a sad truth of the current situation.  Most of those that were actually offended legitimately are long gone, what is left is trolls, the fan base, and the fan base turned skeptic. Very little original or useful criticism is coming out of anyone that hasn't been beaten to death by everyone before. Bottom line is the Darkfall fan base attracted these trolls that inhabit their forums and scared away any chance of legitimate discussion of the games merits and faults, by hyping of a game in a less then forthright manner. That and Adventurine has done very little to scare the trolls and skeptics away with proof of anything but what has been said by them over and over however true or false it may be.

Thats the whole point of PR these days. I refer to it as prick response. They are getting payed to promote the game, if they dont they lose their jobs, usually. If you went into a restaurant and asked the waiter how good the food is, the typical response is "its good, let me get you a menu.", if they said "the food sucks, the cooks cough and sneeze all over the food, half of it looks bad... try X down the street, its at least edible." and a manager heard them...they would lose their jobs.

You learn to filter through the marketing and look at the core features, wait till release and see if they meet them. Simple as that.

Who cares what the nerds do? If they want to kiss his ass and dream, let them. Its what they do, why let it bother you at all? Sometimes its best to assume its true until proven false, thats all they are doing. Enjoying the anticipation of a game, even if their hopes are crushed at the end of the wait. Better that than be bitter and untrusting before and after.

The fanatics of the game were definitely a major problem......ALmost every thread had "Just wait for Darkfall!!!" in it and some fanbois were calling it the best game on the market when all they knew was that it was going to be FFA PVP and have some rules like UO used to have.......Then when some of the gameplay vids came to youtube and we saw how poorly the game looked, and the fanbois still claimed it was the greatest thing ever then some people really got turned off and got more vocal about things......When you factor in other elements like how little is known about simple things like distribution, price, is there a box version, what game company has previewed the game, does anyone even know a beta tester for the game, etc etc etc then it makes it just grow worse and worse......

Then the final nail in the coffin is a guy like Tasos saying the game is finished and could have been released when they barely even have any mobs in the game and it looks like something straight out of 2002.......99 percent of games in development I pay no attention to but when the fanbois start making claims about how great things are then we check it out to see if there is truth or not.

Because there is NOTHING in the rules that says haters, trolls, skeptics... stay out of this section of the forums.  Everyone has an opinion and are free to discuss those opinions on these forums, both good and bad.   Just because YOU don't like that people are anti-DFO or what ever game, doesn't mean other people don't like the tug of war on opinions.  We don't tell you to stop hyping your game, so don't go around telling others to stop de-hyping.  Once you start paying the bills at MMORPG.com, then you can make your own rules on who can post where on the forums.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

    ProfRed,

I think you will have trouble getting the answer you seek because of the way you asked the question.

For one - you assume that everyone who says anything negative is a 'hater' and just wants to 'bash' the game.

I have clipped your post to the bit I will answer.

I am genuinely interested in game design.

I am genuinely interested consumer protection.

Check my post history.  You will find a number of posts on both subjects.

I don't 'hate' games.  Hate is an emotion and a very strong one.  Game design interests me - particularly MMOs.

And I comment on the good and the bad.  Sadly, many of the designs lately are bad.  Too many reasons to detail here.

    How's that?

... We all know that you aren't really trying to save someone from pre-ordering the game or wasting their money.   I just wonder what you have invested ...  I just am really curiuos about what your motivation is.

    How's that?

No I don't assume that at all.  There are plenty of people who talk negatively about the game, but are not haters.  You sound like one of them.  I openly discuss the negatives of the game with friends and others like me, but I can't even do that here because people will pull that out of the conversation and quote it while ignoring the disclaimer that says, 'I really like this game and it has great potential.  I will buy/preorder/play it.'  (Just an example)

I understand why you post the way you post.  I am just curious about the actual haters.

Because it is a lot easier and more fun to be hatefull, opening up room for conflict, rather then sitting in a circle singing camp fire songs and praising the flowers and the trees. Trolls and in this case haters feed off of the active emotion that their "hating" ellicits from normal forum goers and other trolls alike. You may as well ask why trolls troll, the answer to that question is the answer to yours.
