MMORPG's arent supposed to be realistic, no game is. we have video games to be able to experience something we wouldnt be able to otherwise. alot of things in video games dont make sense. katamari damacy's story didnt make sense, but it was a pretty fun game otherwise. i agree with the persons posting on if a person can grow to lvl 60 and be more powerful and still look the same, then a bird should also.
There is a difference between going for realism and going for what makes sense.
And besides, the span of experience (in real life) of a person who is starting their craft to a master is far greater and more expansive than the what one can envision for a bird.
Besides, the masters in my kungfu class looked like regular people and were masters. You wouldn't know they were masters from looking at them.
however if I take you at your suggestion then I'm going to be too scared to walk out of the house tomorrow for fear of all those killer birds!
if you really quit the game because of the types of mobs the game contained, then maybe you shouldnt have been playing in the first place. thats not that big of a reason that you would actually cancel your sub.
Serioulsy... silly creatures should be of no threat by this point but Turbine INSISTS on the repetative grind of annoying creatures. Does NO ONE else find this maddeningly retarded? It's not heroic, it's not 'Lord of the Rings' at all... ugh... gonna go work out a bit and vent the idiocy I'm exposed to in this game off a bit...
cant think of many mmo's that dont repeat this sort of absurdity.
It's silly and ruins immersion but it's also what a lot of other MMOs have done so Turbine did it too. I think they are a bit too afraid of doing something new, so they emulate WoW as closely as possible, including this obviously "easy route" of game design.
You can either put up with it or not but it's not something Turbine invented, just yet another thing they thoughtlessly copied (just like levels, static worlds, simple two click crafting, shooting gallery placement of mobs in incoherent illogical world, no player impact/interaction with world, bizarre quest-strings based on levels instead of importance, extremely simplified quest-structure (go kill, go fetch, go from here to there, go talk to mob), forced grouping and the list goes on).
Why is there this intolerance against using high level animal mobs in LotRO? The books were full of them and bears and boars in real life are particularly nasty. Wolves one-on-one aren't so bad because they're a social animal. But boars have always made it into human legend as being one of the most dangerous animals in the world. Greek mythology is a great example, where heroes were brought down by boars.
LotR is based on the Anglo-Saxon myths which were created by a people who lived in direct contact with nature. Forests were truly threatening places for them, therefore a bear to them symbolised something very different. Tolkein tapped into this idea in his books. Packs of birds? Would it be groups of weaker birds or the swarm mobs in places like Midgewater Marshes? Groups of birds would be complained about by classes that have problems handling groups of mobs, swarms would be complained about for lack of realism (like one of the posters did here). There isn't any real way to resolve this issue without pissing someone off.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
there was a grouse in the woods near my cabin in maine which was very aggressive.
in self-defense i attacked it with a rake, several times, to no avail.
i stayed in more than one day because of this very territorial bird a little smaller than a bowling ball.
and i was not the only one to stay inside.
we were afraid.
Did this also happen after you managed to kill a truck-sized troll? <- This is why it breaks immersion having to fight a singly tiny bird or badger.
A flock of birds maybe, but a single one? With the speed and strength you need to be able to survive a trolls attack, you should be able to swat a bird with your shield as if its a fly.
Or kick a badger to the other side of Middle-Earth if it tries to bite your ankle.
I don't know, a whole party of Knights and their retainers needed a hand grenade to kill a single Rabbit in one instance .
Lol sorry. As someone mentioned it's just the curse of the old level based game formula . Just have to suspend reality even a bit further when that Creban with more life than your Guard starts kicking your ass.

I know thats the reason i hit canceled.

Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice.

Says a lot about LoTRO that the biggest complaint that can found is they do not like the creatures that Turbine picked to use as mobs.
I miss DAoC
Birds are more dangerous then you think.
This level 50 photographer couldn't solo a single bird without almost dying: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDftbccwjS4
Maybe Turbine added deadly birds to add a little realism to the wizards and orcs.
