Any MMO's have solo or 2 man instances

all instances in games I have played are a minimum 5 man. I solo alor or play with a friend and love doing instances. Are there any decent games out there that have solo instances? dont care if the game is pay or free.

LotRO has added six repeatable solo instances with MoM and will be adding more with the next update. They also have some three player instances.

Ao to name one.  Just hit a mission terminal and choose a solo mission, it creates the instance for you and it's free to play although pretty dated now.

To clarify eric1000's comment, Ao = Anarchy Online, and yes, that has solo instances.

Guild Wars is based around grouping, but you can group strictly with AI characters rather than other players if so inclined.  Basically, you get however many players you want in your group up to the cap (which can be only you) and fill in the rest of the group spots with henchmen and heroes.  It's also very heavily instanced, but that may not be the sort of "solo instances" that you're looking for.

If the random missions from AO count as instances, the dungeons in Mabinogi are also worth a look.  The game definately favors small groups of players that know what they are doing over a large milling mass of people.

EQ2 has lots of small solo and duo zones all over the place - at least for the first 50 levels or so. Finding them is the trick, you will probably need to use a 3rd party web site to help track them down.

I found that I could solo and duo a huge number of the group instances (depending on my class and spec).  Huge chunks of the game are balanced around a 3 man group killing even level monsters.

Guild Wars is fun with any number of people, and the great part is that you can go in from 1 to 8 players (and fill up the other spots with AI henchmen/heroes).

It is a campaign style game, so its similar to like the story campaigns of RTS games where you can only play missions that you have progressed in the story; however, you can always play with your friends in content that you have already beaten to have them catch up.

I have done almost everything solo in the game, though plenty of people have done all of the storylines solo. And it plays sort of like Zelda or Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles... you can stay with the main storyline, or branch off and do the side stories.

Age of Conan also has quite a few solo instances and dungeons, and will be getting 1 more maxlevel solo dungeon in the next patch. In general the entire game is soloable, except the group and raid dungeons and special mobs. If you want group play then you can chose to do any part of the game in epic group mode for harder mobs and a higher chance of good loot. So the choice is yours in any part of the game.

City of Heroes / Villains has instances that scale, so you can do them solo or an up to an 8 person team.

True, AoC works well for solo play. You miss out on the best gear however.

Guildwars works perfect too, you bring bots there, some you can design as you want. It is perfect for 2 players with 2 "heroes" each for the instances, we did some obsidian hunting with 2 guys (very hard) and it worked very well.

    Anarchy Online invented the instance.

And everyone on here always calls WoW the easiest MMO theres no solo instancing in WoW.

Age of Conan has many solo instances for both general questing and as part of the main "Destiny" storyline.

I'd recommend a single or two-player RPG for solo play though.  The gameplay is going to be far better than anything you are going to get out of a MMO with solo play.

get a group .. its really not that damn scary.

  • AganazerAganazer Member Posts: 1,319

I play every game with my wife as a duo so I am always looking for good 2-person content.

City of Villains/Heroes - This scales based on your party size. Great game for duo's, not so great solo.

Dungeons and Dragons Online - Fantastic instances and now that they have hirelings, most of the game can be completed as a duo. Soloing would be extremely difficult, but there is a fair amount of solo-only content. Pretty much the entire game is instanced and they do instances better than anyone on the market IMO.

Sacred 2 - I know its not an MMOG, but its great for two players and you only need to buy one box to play on a LAN together.

Tabula Rasa - The instances were fantastic for two and there were a lot of instances. Too bad its closing.

But tedious and time consuming. Do i really want to spam trade channel "LFM 1 hearler 1 thank 2 dps" for 30 min before I can play?  Nope.

Soloable or Dualable instances will be god sends.

Atlantica Online lets you control to as much 9 characters at the same time. its a turn-based mmorpg game so there wont be any confusion in battles. its pretty much what we can see in FF battles.

Maybe you can't find groups because you are LFG in trade?

Soloing and Difficulty don't really mean the same thing.

And people don't call WoW the easiest MMO for its leveling content, but rather for its end game content, and not so much easy as Casual friendly and easy COMPARED to pre-BC.

Sorry, I've been arguing this point a lot lately it seems.

In addition to the newer solo and three player instances, LOTRO has a lot of solo instances found throughout the game.  Not all of them will be found easily and take some investigating to find but they are quite nice.  They aren't repeatable but are definitely worth the time to do.

DnD had solo and duo dungeons.

thats the best i can do (aside from the Lotro ones, but they were few and far between).

i honestly dont see why you want solo instances but duo ones i can understand.

Dark Age of Camelot has task dungeons. repeatable instances that are created just right for your group, whatever level range and size of group you take in. I hated it myself, it killed group levelling even worse than when they introduced /level...

EQ2, LOTRO, AO, and Guild Wars all have solo instances.  CoX is the only game where solo play fully supported through almost all avenues rather than a side thing.  Guild Wars being a special in that they are not really "solo" but that you can make your own NPC team via Heroes and Hirelings.  DDO is also trying hirelings but not to the extent GW does.

However CoX does not run into the content conflict the other games can due to its scalable and therefore different content as group size increases.

    To put it more clearly.

In CoX  when 1 person goes into an instances you may face spawns of size 3 with leutenants in them.  With 4 people you mayve face spawns of size 8 with a boss or two in them.  The solo instance give similar xp and rewards however there is an xp bonus for being in a group.  So grouping is a different experience.  As someone who like to solo I often opt to group up because it give me more avenues to enjoy the game

Whereas in Dungeons and Dragons Online if an instance has a "solo" option the dungeon itself is exactly the same, but all the montsers are made to have less hp, less damage,  and less forimidalbe spells.  And they reward you like crap.  So its just a more boring less rewarding version of the same dungeon you get in a group.

This is a shame as DDO has by far the funnest instances to run solo.

I was thinking the same, looks like we found the source of the problem.

Solo/duo instances work great in single player games, but are a bad idea for a sociallly oriented MMO's.

Which is why there are no social MMO's anymore.

Good luck finding any MMO that makes soloers feel like they're being rewarded for the effort, especially in comparison to other play styles.

My suggestion would be to wait for Star Wars: The Old Republic.  Not only will 95% of the game be soloable, but you will be rewarded equally with other play styles.

With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
