I use Vista 32/64 on 3 different levels of computers (gaming laptop, gaming desktop, cheap desktop) and it has worked well for everything that I've thrown at it.

I use Vista Ultimate on my primary PC for gaming, and my netbook uses Windows 7 since it's legacy processor friendly (Which the netbook is in comparison]
Yes, I can confirm 7 is essentially a dumbed down and reconfigured Vista since the drivers for Vista are 100% compatible

As i understand it windows 7 is sorta an upgrade to vista as it keeps a lot of the same features and look and doesnt really introduce that much new stuff its just how vista should of been when it was released.
But for now ill stick with vista i'd rather just wait until win 7 is actually released and then wait til they fix it before actually getting it, its the same thing i did when i upgraded from xp to vista.

I love threads like these, always linux fans vs windows xp fans vs windows vista fans vs mac fans! There are always people claiming games run 'great' on linux, even met a few claiming it was running better on linux. The last one is pretty simple to answer, how could an emulation outperform the original? It can't.... I even doubt it can run as good as it runs on Win, I myself never got the chance to really try it, as ATI has the crappiest Linux drivers ever. Especially for my old firegl v3100, which I then had.
And you can run most games on linux, IF you're willing to pay an additional fee to buy Cedega. And the die-hard linux fans claim we pay too much for Windows, while they feel like paying for something, which can't possibly as good as the original, while it could run for free on Windows. So no, Linux is not by far a good alternative for gaming, or casual usage, and it fails even harder for developing software (as in games).
Mac users are even weirder, they pay for an over-priced Mac computer, pay for the OS, and they'll also have to pay for Cider (Mac's version of Cedega) to play the games. While playing on Windows is cheaper, more stable, and outperforms playing on Mac... And Mac is also incapable of developing games, for pretty much all the same reasons as Linux does. And no, Photoshop isn't game development.
So that leaves us with Windows, good old Windows... Loved by many, hated by even more, and only a small percentage has a valid reason. "I hate M$ for their overpriced products, and Vista phailz!".
1) Microsoft isn't overpriced, especially when compared to the insanely over priced iMacs. Microsoft even has a lot of free features, which people just never pay attention to. Not that much for the casual user, but the visual studios are great pieces of free software. XNA opens up xbox360 development, for free if it's for personal use. They even have free (and good) web hosting.
2) Vista doesn't fail, most errors are user made errors (most => almost all of them, 95%). I've seen people posting stuff on the MS forums about drivers not working, he had 64bit Vista, and was trying to install 32bit xp drivers... And it's usually the same kind of people complaining about Vista, just going with the flow, and blaming everything on vista (which IS stable).
Anyway, after a massive off-topic WoT, back on topic. I use both xp and w7, and there's no difference in performance. Although w7 looks way better than xp/vista, it doesn't loose any firepower. And for the people who are always complaining about compability problems, i was able to install a vb6 game yesterday (which is 11 years old). Didn't even need compability mode or anything, just have to use some brains... If you're wondering, the only reason it was kinda hard, was because w7 seems to have updated versions of the dll's vb6 needs. The installer didn't really seem to like that, as W7 doesn't let installers remove (or update) dll's.
So it's a great OS, even in beta, everything runs on it, + you have DX 11 (and thus 10) for free! I've bene using it as main OS for a few weeks now, drivers work perfectly, games even better (i have dx10 lighting now :O). I'd say, give it a try!

Many games run better under linux because a lot of linux distros are less resource intensive. Yes, emulations can run faster on linux, because the platform is simply different.
There's also games that run fine on Linux that won't run on windows, it doesn't make windows ""sucks" does it, the reverse also isn't true.
And I'm not a linux junky, and it's mostly as easy to install as windows. Ati needs to work on their drivers, that I will agree on.
I use windows XP, haven't upgraded to Vista because it sucks and it obstructs your FPS by a maximum of 8 which is alot for games which require good graphics cards. Just got to wait for W7, even though its FPS is lower than XP, it's higher than Vista.

Vista 64 bit to take advantage of my 8gb of ram. I have had no issues with the OS itself, but some drivers from hardware not being the greatest. Particularly with my audio drivers. >< I've thought about putting some space aside for Windows 7 but haven't gotten around to it yet.
I know that feeling... I'm still using my old SB Live! 5.1, and officially Vista doesn't support it. Same for my MP3 player (Creative Jukebox Zen)...
Only reason for me to use Vista over XP is the great graphics that LotR has, and some high expectations of Aion later this year. With that, I think 2010 will be the year that we'll see some good DX10 MMO releases...

I'm no great user of linux, at the moment i'm only using it on my media player pc. I do feel the need to point out some misconceptions you have about using windows programs in linux though. You seem to be under the impression that linux "emulates" windows. It doesn't. Wine, and Cedega which is built on Wine, are replacement libraries. They replicate the functionality of the windows, and in cedega's case, direct x API. They don't emulate, they act AS the same files. They're reverse engineered, so sometimes it might take time to find the right way to handle each API call, and some might need re-working when different parts of the API are discovered, but they are not emulating. WINE actually stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator.
Because it's effectively running the code natively, it can run it as fast as windows, as long as that part of the API that's needed has been succesfully engineered and reproduced. Because linux has a smaller memory footprint and lower processor usage, when properly configured, it is indeed possible to run a program faster than in windows, as there are simply more resources available to handle it.
Is it as good as windows? probably not, after all, it's a reverse engineering project, and the platform they're reverse engineering is being changed every now and then, and different programs use it in different ways. It's not by any means a solution that your "average" computer user will be able to just pick up and use either, it can take a lot of work to get it all optimised, and a lot more if things go wrong.

From the sounds of the thread it looks like the OP was just wanting to know of those 3 OS what are people using....I dont think the OP had much interest in who was using Mac, Linux, or some other OS........ Maybe the OP is looking to buy a new system and wants to know which of those 3 most of us are using??
I'm glad this thread is just windows, or it might take me a while to post everything I use. I mainly use Vista at this point. It's the most solid and stable OS I've ever used. I use 32bit Vista at home, and 64bit at work. I've been wanting to go to 64bit at home, but I have so much stuff on my computer (approximately 700-800 gig) so I've been lazy about getting around to it.
I still have a partition of XP on my home computer, and I think I've booted into it about 3 times over the past 2-3 years.
When I had to replace my laptop I decided to put 7 on it, and if I had more time I'd put Vista back on it. It's got the stability of Vista, but needs another beta or two as it's just not ready for the big show. For every step it takes forward it takes at least one back.
I laugh at all the people that whine about performance in Vista. Vista & XP gaming in DX9 have been even for some time now. Usually if someone says that it's slower I take a look at their computer and they have so much extra garbage running because they won't turn off a single thing their application shoves in.
Linux is fun and I love to dabble with it, but the only way I would use it full time is if the only other choice is a Mac. When they are working they are great. The first time you run into a problem and you realise you need a good knowledge of text commands is when you realize it's not the 80's anymore and you move on to something else.
I've got nothing against Macs, I fool around with mine from time to time, there is just something about the incredibly poor layout of OSX that makes me want to schoot someone if I use it for more than an hour.
Currently between my two desktops and net book, I have 3 XP installs, 2 Ubuntu installs, and Windows 7. I mostly use XP at the moment.
But to be honest, if Windows 7 wasn't going to be unavailable in the future before it's officially released, I would uninstall all of my XP partitions and install Windows 7 as my Primary OS right away! The thing is beautiful. I have it on my old Pentium 4 machine and it runs just as good as XP on my quad core. I love it, I can't wait for it to be officially released.
BTW, I love seeing all the people claiming that Vista sucks because 3rd parties have crappy drivers for it.

Windows Vista x64 here. My wife has Vista x86 and my daughter has XP Pro x86. The only game problem any of us have is trying to play Spore on my X64. It just doesn't work. I think it's ATI's drivers though.

(Was using 32-bit Home Premium but the 3.2 Gig limitation was annoying)
Besides a blue screen with a reinstallation of a standard PCI bridge to standard PCI bridge driver on reboot, when first waking my PC from sleep, it has been doing fine. It is other wise solid.
(Listing these low specs below in case it's a combination of hardware that did it)

My machine here at home runs XP but my parents have vista and I haven't had a single problem with it.

Still with windows xp...Vista gave me too much trouble for gaming so I decided to return to XP and be problem free...well almost anyway

I'm using all three. But I primarly use Vista 64bit. It's a solid as a rock.
I use ubuntu and xp.
I tried vista but went back to xp. I will try windows 7 at some point.
Primarily I use Windows 7. Its stable, easily compatible with my games and apps, and is able to use my hardware and make it work very nicely.
I did have XP 32bit, but... I needed 64 bit for my upgrade, so I just got W7.
