Teala, when one lacks one of the more secure religions like Christianity that basically gives one insta-order and insta-purpose, the only thing I can say is...don't worry about it. Just live. Yeah, there will be times when you question it all and wonder, but in the end, why bother? The only answers we are going to get are going to come after death. Even if it is nothingness, that would definitely count too.
So just live on, and don't give much thought to wondering, because when you start settling on an idea of what happens, it starts committing you to a reason. And if that reason turns out to be false when you die, then what was the use of it?

I'm just getting depressed. So many bad things are happening, friends and family loosing their jobs or scaled back, the whole uncertainty of it all. This makes me think about things more deeply and this week is going to be miserable for me as it is.
If I died today...or tomorrow, let's say(OMG she is going emo on your arses) who the frak would really care and why would it matter? To be honest I know some family members would be hurt and some friends, but they'll get over it, life would go on and the sun will rise and go down as it has for millions of years. I sometimes feel like my life is meaningless.
Agreed. Thats why if armagedon so happend tomorrow I would be excited. Everyone on planet earth would be dieing with me and life would no longer go on without me. Plus not that many people in the after life (if there is one) get to say "Yeah.....Thats right, I was there when the world ended... I'm cool"
But on some serious shit. Death is going to be crazy yo!! Aint that the genius of it.... NOT TO KNOW?!
I think it'll be exciting, hopefully I'll go of old age if anything. You just can't think about it, then it'll come too fast. You'll base your whole existance on it.
Just got to get over the fact that everyone dies, and we all do it sooner or later. Only god knows why.. (if there is some sort of higher being...I personally hope we're all a science experiment ran by aliens.)

I don't know why I'm here and I've never really given it much thought. Perhaps I'm here to make sure that the next generation has an easyer time of it all. Or perhaps I'm here to experience as much as I can in life. I don't know. I'm not religious by any strech of the imagination. I was raised Catholic but I've long since stoped with the prayers and beliefs because I don't think any secular religions bring order and peace to the world, quite the oposite.
The way I see it, I'm going to go out and see as much as I can, experience as much as I can and see if I can find some interesting, "good" people. I don't know what's going to happen when I die and I don't dwel on it because it's not very productive and gets in the way of the other things I have planed.
As for the depression we're having, it can't last for ever. We've had them before and more then likely we'll have them again. We've made it through before and I think we can do it again.
I know one thing for sure though. When I die I want to leave this world the same way I canme into it: Naked and between the legs of a woman.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Try to reflect all the posted responses to your question, Teala. Some are similiar to each other. Some are very different. All of them come from the mind of the individual who wrote it. Which is right? Are they all right to the one who thinks it is so? Or are they way off? Who can know?
You said it yourself, "think about the size of the 'frakking' universe - you're not even measurable really when you think about how big the universe is compared to you." Not measureable in size, maybe, but does that mean that we are not measureable in value? And if we are, who are we of value to? Considering the size of the universe, virtually infinite, then how can we discern the answer to your question based on our own observations, our own research, essentially our finite minds.
Now if we live in a universe where there is no God, then those who say that there is no meaning to this life are absolutely correct. It's all a freak accident and therefore, there is no such thing as right and wrong. But if that is true, then why are we shocked when "bad" things happen? Why do we debate what's going on in Mexico right now with all the violence down there and the kidnappings and the killings? If there is no God, the the debate is meaningless. At best, it just makes for interesting conversation and nothing more.
On the other hand, if there is something greater than just us, then suddenly life does have meaning, suddenly our actions do have consequences and suddenly there is a reason for us to be here. I think our hearts tell us that this is the case, even if our minds waver on the issue. And so, we are rightly shocked when we see people executing other human beings all for the sake of their own selfish gain.
But why is it so hard for us to understand that which is greater than us, i.e. God, if in fact, He is out there? Well, this is where I go from the philisophical to the personal. I believe you can boil the actions of the drug lords in Mexico down to a single inherit characteristic. Self-centeredness. In other words, they have made themselves the all-important beings of their own lives and that's what gives them the justification to do what they do. They are more important than those that they kill, kidnap and deal drugs too. But they are not unique in having this inherit characteristic. Again, I believe, this is a characteristic that is inherit in all of us. We are all born with this disposition to make ourselves the center of our lives. The Bible calls it sin (ok, here he goes, getting all religious). But that's what it is. If you think about virtually every sin any of us ever commits, it pretty much boils down to self-centeredness. Lying, stealing, cheating, arrogance, pride, murder, anything you can think of which is done to gain some kind of advantage for ourselves.
And this is why, again I believe, God remains so hard for us to contemplate, understand...to know. Our self-centered actions don't only harm our relationship with others, it hurts (it actually destroys) our relationship with God. He created us with the intention that He would be the center of our lives, but because of this condition we have, all of us essentially given God the finger on a daily basis. And we do it at our own peril. You may say, "well this is pretty arrogant of God, isn't it?" But if He is the one who created us, then I think He knows better than we do what is best for us. And I think the state of the world bears that out. If you added up the self-centered lives of each individual to encompass the entire planet, then that should mean that the world would be a pretty screwed up place. Well, HELLO!!! You don't have to believe in God to see that the world is screwed up.
So to bring it back full circle, there certainly is chaos in the world. But is it chaos which arose randomly or is it chaos that emanates from each one of us? I would say that because we are capable of both commiting horrific acts, while at the same time being horrified by them, it is the latter.
he book is intended to be read as a daily inspiration, with each of the 40 short chapters read on consecutive days. Each chapter contains a personal application section at the end with a "point to ponder," a verse to remember, and a question to consider over the course of that day. Rick Warren described his book as an "anti-self-help book." The first sentence of the book reads, "It's not about you,"[2] and the remainder of the chapter goes on to explain how the quest for personal fulfillment, satisfaction, and meaning can only be found in understanding and doing what God placed you on Earth to do.[3] The book's 40 chapters are divided into six major sections, with the following titles:[4]
* What on Earth Am I Here For?
* Purpose #1: You Were Planned for God's Pleasure (Worship)
* Purpose #2: You Were Formed for God's Family (Fellowship)
* Purpose #3: You Were Created to Become Like Christ (Discipleship)
* Purpose #4: You Were Shaped for Serving God (Ministry)
* Purpose #5: You Were Made for a Mission (Mission)
There must be a reason. Look at life, it's so beautiful, every human is an amazing piece of machinery. We are so elegant but fragile.
We'll find out why soon enough, just takes time to find out more about the universe I think. Quantum theory is another thing we don't understand, there's more we don't know. We have something to live for, even if it's only finding out why we're here in the first place and that's good enough for me.

Then add the secret ingredient - sour cream. OMG...moist and they soak up the syrup just right. Mmmm...you know...I think pancakes are the secret to life - wanna know why? lol Love. Pancakes love to be eaten. Their one sole purpose is to be eaten and in them being eaten they give off unconditional love. Just beautiful.
lol - and they are best after sex....really...they are. I am seriously surprised I can type this right now and be remotely coherent.

Life.. so beautiful? Most of the human race is a wicked piece of machinery with terrible minds. Most people have religious aspects to their life, but do not follow them. Selfishness is one of the biggest things this race has to offer. We only care about what one needs.
No one gives thought to other people, social standard, and this planet. Most people simply do not even think for themselves. I dont really understand why, it just is. If people on this planet could be just a little more respectful towards eachother I think that would make the world a tad bit of a better place, even if it was fake emotion.
Thats the genius of it, we only really care about what one thinks, people are terribly closed minded these days and fail to see life as it truely is. God bless you that you think life is so beautiful and that EVERY human being is an amazing piece of machinery. Without you in the world, life just wouldn't be as lovely as it is.

were here because we have something important to do and we have our own role to perform. And its our responsiblity to find what are those things (damn what am i saying?).
as for myself i'm very thankful because i experienced this kind of life and pursuing my goal and facing many trials? and best of all i found the girl that im looking for. i guess she's the one that i am looking and always asking to my self that "what am doing here?" and "what is my purpose on this god damn earth".
so better ask you're self and think twice. just do the things that you know in you're self it will have a good out put and will make you happy.
Dont think we're here for any specific purpose. As someone already said; we're here because the universe allows it. If the universe is infinitely large, then we can exist because the possibilities are endless. What happens after death is an entirely different question (well, maybe not entirely).
What i believe happens after death is a toss up between; 1) nothing, we cease to exist or 2) we start over again, for no specific reason. I mean if gravity, energy, light and such things follow patters, why wouldnt death follow a pattern as well?
What also bugs me about our current messing around on this planet is humanity at large. I mean, how can so many of us run around blowing others to pieces, rape, murder and destroy? Its as if they dont think at all, only helplessly following emotions and instincts. If humanity could at a point join together there would be no truth that we wouldnt uncover... in time.
Illius, shes trying to get you nakes and in between her legs, so that she could kill you. Shes the anti-christ. XD
I dunno about you but I could think of worse ways to go out. Dieing doesn't sound so bad all of a sudden

I have my own way about how I would like to go, but it is one of the few things I keep secret in my life. I agree with you Teala about life being rather depressing of late. I am not sure we have the same reasons, but any reasons are enough.
::hugs:: We'll make it through this mess. I mean unless a major world disaster hits that really screws us all up...we'll all bounce back and be all chipper again. If our great grandparents could weather the great depression...well we can too. ^_^

I wonder who laid out the pattern. If there was nothing, then there is nothing, right? But there is something.

Its as if they dont think at all, only helplessly following emotions and instincts. If humanity could at a point join together there would be no truth that we wouldnt uncover... in time.
I dunno about you but I could think of worse ways to go out. Dieing doesn't sound so bad all of a sudden
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I would like to go while riding a horse on the California coast during a gorgeous sunset.
I have my own way about how I would like to go, but it is one of the few things I keep secret in my life.
I agree with you Teala about life being rather depressing of late. I am not sure we have the same reasons, but any reasons are enough.
My blog is a continuing story of what MMO's should be like.
::hugs:: We'll make it through this mess. I mean unless a major world disaster hits that really screws us all up...we'll all bounce back and be all chipper again. If our great grandparents could weather the great depression...well we can too. ^_^
To live and discover. And seek out answers to these very questions.
Would seem obvious. But being here, in this symmetric peice of art, with a fully aware conscious, is hardly coinsedental
I wonder who laid out the pattern. If there was nothing, then there is nothing, right? But there is something.
