With the numerous problems stated in these forums about the state of the game (some are even saying "unplayable") and the disasterous billing "fiasco", is it safe to say that this is a "Failed Launch"?

Not yet. Once they pull the plug on the server you can safely say that. And im guessing it will be soon.
I'd call it a failed launch when the server goes down. I'd call Tasos a failure also. His career in gaming is on the line right now. And when the company denies refunds to the preorders and Tasos is standing in court I'll watch him lie through his ass for the last time.
Failed game? Not yet. Failed launch? I'm not sure that Darkfall has actually met any requirements to be called a launch, let alone a failed launch.
I think when they released the game for official download and had people pay to enter their world, its "launched". Just my opinion, though.
Well... when I think of an MMO launch I think of a jet catapulting off a carrier deck. Some fly higher, faster. But they all get off the deck.
Then there are games like Darkfall. Darkfall is more like the helicopter shoved off the carrier's deck to make room for refugees fleeing Saigon. Sure, it got off the deck. But it, uh, wasn't really under its own power.
The real failure is not the client or the server/s or lag/sync as anyone with half a brain or beta experience would know there are always issues but the billing screw up is a HUGE failure. What sense does it make to hold off preorders til days before launch. This should be sorted long before you intend launching even if you are restricting the numbers.
Failed launch YES, you can NOT argue with that. Failed Game is stilli n the air, Def need a few months before ANYONE can make judgement on that.
Played: Shadowbane, UO, PlanetSide, SWG, EQ 2, City of Heros, AO, AoC, Daoc, WOW, lotro, Eve, GW, Tabula, Pirates of the burning sea (yup), Vanguard, Warhammer, Lineage 2
Out of all those I loved Shadow Bane, SWG (it had its issues but those first few months were great) and AO after about 5 months I was in love) RIP..not since then have I loved a MMO...
I don't think it will be a failed game. I believe after they fix the numerous problems facing the players, that it will retain a steady population along the lines of Vanguard or such, which isn't bad for a niche game. It may take a while though, just judging from today's problems.
The mishandling of the pre-orders, and inability of most to even play the game has, in my opinion, warranted the ability to use the term "Failed Launch"
The verdict as to state of the actual game is still out. The game may and probably will keep a playerbase of between 50-100k if the core game is actually playable.
As a preorder holder I think the launch is a huge failure. The game is in an unplayable state. Everything is out of sync with players and mobs (this was mentioned by them). If you hit a mob sometuimes you hit people or they fly all over your screen. Its frustrating for me since this is my first taste of the game. Limited release or not alienating your customers with very little infomation and empty promises of patches is not a good way to get people to play it. (at least give us an honest update). Knowing programming myself it is possible fixing something breaks something else. At least tell us your having issues getting it done. What else? Well when you exit the game the login restarts. Your options are then erased and it forces 1024 x 768 resolution non windowed. You must reset your options everytime you load the game. I have not experience CTDs or BSoDs on hte positive side.
The launch is a failure. They have mishandled billing, they couldnt get the servers online on the day of the launch due to billing issues and random patch errors.
The game on the other hand remains to be seen if it becomes a failure or successful.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

vangaurd is a complete horrible failure btw, its population is NO WHERE NEAR how many people were inerested in the game, just like Age of Conan. If the same happens to darkfall, yes you can call it a failed game, which will, like vangaurd, eventually become f2p like shadowbane.

I think it was safe to say "failed launch" on January 22nd
Yes, it is.
And I've been trying very hard to stay positive as I comitted my guild to the game.
It may well survive and thrive, but the launch has been poor indeed. I've been in the beta of most MMOs, including UO and most that have followed.
This one is at least as bad as any of them that I have been involved with.

Let's not forget the November Beta, December launch.
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside
Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.

See you in game !!!
Nice. Third in that series I have seen. Cute dog too.

Wow, downtoearth. I must admit, I'm surprised to see that you agree.
Somewhere in Norway, Funcom is sighing in relief as AO is removed from the worst lauch in MMO history honor.
It may not be the worst Launch, but it is up there...
