Look at it this way: AoC with a 120 developers team, huge marketing expenses, etc... has been surviving for months with roughly 100k subscribers. Ok, you will say that they had lots of cash in the bank, have sold about 700k at launch and then more there after; but don't forget that they are selling though retail channels and also have a lot more expenses running a bigger company with northern European and US wages compared to the low Greek ones.
Now, if AoC with 100k subs can survive with 120 devs + marketing + lower margin on retail sales, etc.. I think DF with 30 developers, the low Greek wages, no maketing expenses, no packaging - only direct download, less servers, direct sales to the customers (they get all of the cash minus the Globalcollect commission) should eventually break even with 20-30k subs until the content gets patched in.
i wouldnt call millions in losses.. as surviving.. well ye surviving.. , but not maintaining it.. .. as they dont make enough to cover the cost.. even without any reasonable profit..

That brings back some good memories. Cannot for the life of me remember the connecting zones though...Eastern Commons and the other was a desert? And if you ever played on the pvp server, there was Feymart.
Just a quick response, I play EVE, WoW, and WAR. I dunno if its in my profile, I haven't updated it. I mostly play EVE and WoW. What I noticed between EVE and Darkfall is that EVE already had tools and options to allow the economy to exist... like one person said earlier, some of these options are disabled or don't exist in Darkfall.
One other thing... someone mentioned about "skilling up" and doing whatever you wanted is characteristic of a Sandbox... but there is a difference between intentional sandbox where they give you a shitload of options to help you do what you want--- and lack of development where they just give you a landscape to rampage across.... So Darkfall is coming off as a "sandbox" without giving players a shovel and pail. Only your shit to fling at eachother, the sand itself to kick into eachothers' eyes, and to each a bottle of water to build a small castle.
So, stepping back. Can anyone express Darkfall's currently implemented Sandbox options? Aside from skilling and town-building...
World is empty prolly done so not many whine to much when pvping they been killed by mobs now 70% of world is without mobs so no danger at all only when you see other players result also simple gameplay.
Ok, so then at least populate the world with some non-aggressive wildlife (you can still hunt it for skinning/crafting/cooking) and scripted NPCS living in the world to bring it alive, add to this the weather system (should be ready I hear?) and player shops (no trade house please) with a trade channel to get an economy rolling and RPG folks would feel at home.
This is really not much and could be done pretty quickly. It would be enough to satisfy me. If the world feels alive, I have no problem with going out to find the mobs.
Now add to this the housing system and some more goodies and this would be pure awesomeness.
Really not much is missing to make it acceptable, I am sure they can make it.
What in your experience with game development companies makes you think all that stuff "could be done pretty quickly"? Games like AoC, WAR, Vanguard, etc, that had serious money, talent, and resources to back it up, couldn't implement their small list of corrections that would make it a good game. What makes you think this small company that has not knocked a single ball out of the park is capable of quickly implementing entire game systems to fix the game?
For reference, I felt the same way about AoC as your last line...and 9 months later they are still trying to figure out what they need to do. I felt the same way about DDO any 2 years later, they are still moving in the wrong direction half the time...

It doesn't make any sense because SANDBOX IS NOT A GAME TYPE / GENRE. Its a feature just like skill based, clan cities, alignment system, crafting, etc.
It doesn't mean anything more than being able to do what you want while ignoring the plot line. Thats all the sandbox feature means.

You log in, and you can do whatever the heck you want.
You can go PvE. You can go do a quest. You can go solo pk. You can go craft anything you want. You can go anywhere you want to in the world. You can interact with everyone of all races, however you wish to interact with them. You can claim and build a city. You can form an alliance with a guild that owns a city and help protect their land in exchange for usage of the cities amenities. You can go roll in a pk squad. You can skill up and use any weapon you want, whenever you want.
It's pretty damn sandboxy.
There are only a few things standing in the way of Darkfall becoming a truely great sandbox:
Lack of player shops/vendors
Current lack of ingame trade boards
Lack of customizable (decorable) player housing
Also, players could succesfully argue that having lesser magic and greater magic as pre-reqs for the 'real' magic schools is anti-sandbox, but I think it's a good element. Someone who has been ingame for 20 minutes shouldn't be able to recieve 5k gold from their guild and then go running around casting fireballs of doom.
If they implemented my three bullet points above, and revamped the harvesting system, and added unique specials for each melee weapon, the game would be perfect for me.
So, until then, 7/10.

I remember about waiting for months for Vanguard to get improved like this. After 2 years that game still doesn't have a life, no scripted or AI NPCs living in the world and simple things like object shadows (yes other that the tree and avatars, there are no shadows in that 2007 game), and ... and... oh and also...

On the forums Tasos has already said they had wildlife (wolves, lions, etc...), he said they had enabled it (I think it was at the end of beta?), but it doesn't seem to be in at launch. Strange. Also the weather is supposed to be ready? And they say they have the NPCs but have disabled them to allow for more players (WTF?). Trading is also coming I hear? And housing was temporarily not ready but should be coming too?
So, if Darkfall isn't a sandbox, what is it then? Is it linear? Is it a themepark?
DF is a sandbox. It just needs to take some lessons from SWG and create a system to facilitate the economy.
A lot of people confuse "sandbox" with "open ended". Sandbox games have a main plot but offer other activities which a player can potentially do if he or she does not wish to follow the main storyline. Open ended games have no objectives and no real story.
EVE and UO are sandbox games. DF is an open-ended game with no objectives.

If you login to EVE or Darkfall, and fail to understand what sandbox gameplay is....then MMORPGs might not be the thing for you.

Most MMOs give you some limited freedom to do whatever you want and control the world as you please.
It's called World PvP.
Darkfall limited it's sandbox ability like most MMOs with the Rogue criminal system.
They need to revamp it.

Also the weather is supposed to be ready? And they say they have the NPCs but have disabled them to allow for more players (WTF?). Trading is also coming I hear? And housing was temporarily not ready but should be coming too?
A lot of people confuse "sandbox" with "open ended". Sandbox games have a main plot but offer other activities which a player can potentially do if he or she does not wish to follow the main storyline. Open ended games have no objectives and no real story.
EVE and UO are sandbox games. DF is an open-ended game with no objectives.
Themepark is what describes the PvE ASPECT of most MMOs.
MMOs that allow nearly unrestricted world PvP are all "sandbox".
Especially those that allow you to siege other player's towns and battlekeeps.
Darkfall's rogue system is similar (no NOT IDENTICAL) to AoC's murder system.
Darkfall's PvP siege challenge system is similar to AoC's PvP siege system.
Darkfall's world PvP is similar to just about any other world PvP system EXCEPT they limit your -rep based on race where Conan does it on levels.
World of Warcraft and Warhammer Online have similarities as well.
Darkfall you still have to "level" they just hide it by calling it skills instead.
You still have to grind it just like any other linear / theme parked based MMO.
Sandbox is just the new buzz word right now for hyping up a PvP game.

You log in, and you can do whatever the heck you want.
You can go PvE. You can go do a quest. You can go solo pk. You can go craft anything you want. You can go anywhere you want to in the world. You can interact with everyone of all races, however you wish to interact with them. You can claim and build a city. You can form an alliance with a guild that owns a city and help protect their land in exchange for usage of the cities amenities. You can go roll in a pk squad. You can skill up and use any weapon you want, whenever you want.
It's pretty damn sandboxy.
There are only a few things standing in the way of Darkfall becoming a truely great sandbox:
Also, players could succesfully argue that having lesser magic and greater magic as pre-reqs for the 'real' magic schools is anti-sandbox, but I think it's a good element. Someone who has been ingame for 20 minutes shouldn't be able to recieve 5k gold from their guild and then go running around casting fireballs of doom.
If they implemented my three bullet points above, and revamped the harvesting system, and added unique specials for each melee weapon, the game would be perfect for me.
So, until then, 7/10.

I want player shops and trading boards... but realisticaly they are NOT sandbox elements... the whole point is for the players to organise that kind of thing... that is sandbox.
