It's not unplayable. I've been in since launch. I'm getting around 200 ping from California. The first day (after the servers came up) they had some sync issues, but resolved it after that. Any game other than darkfall is better, in my opinion. Just as it is your "opinion" that it is the best. To each their own. I'd rather play a polished game that doesn't have hackers and game wrecking exploits. I guess that's just me, though.
The game is quite good once you get in, and I haven't had this much fun in an MMO in many years. So I'd have to say its not a failed launch. The only failure I see is the company failing to have the proper infrastructure in place to satisfy the demand...

wow had loot table sync issues and unbridled server load (too many people logging in)
VG just had a bad client, no sync issues.
