When the only real chracteristics of a game are to pk people over and over and steal their loot, you get all the nerds who get beat up in school who can take it out in a game. I guess they finally feel superior or something now? UO at least had tons of other things in the game thus not the overwhelming nerd superiority complex.
Exactly. I love all the fanboys preaching about how "it's a sandbox, you can do whatever you want"... yeah as long as you can fit "PK " into the equation. It's sad when the creativity in such a game can't extend beyond "let's think of new ways to grief people".
This thread that the OP linked to the DF forums reminds me a lot of Mordred from DAoC where the people begged for a FFA PvP server, were given it, and then griefers drove everyone off the server until it had to be shutdown due to lack of interest. Kinda like the wolf eating it's own cubs.
Anyone with any sense whatsoever, browsing the official forums for 5 minutes, would know what kind of community this is. They take immaturity to a whole new level.

It is rather a bit of a zoo cage in there ... is it not ?
In some ways perhaps we should be greatful there a nice sin bin for them all. Though I like intelligent PvP but perhaps this is what it always going to devolve to in the post WoW era ? Or maybe its because unlike Eve .. DF is rather base and basic.
Incidiently I always hear older EVE players talk about a time when there were much less asshats in the game ... as if some large event invoked them all to suddenly appear. I can understand smack talk and some friction but when support threads are turned into nasty "you mums got cancer threads" level .. well its just not funny.
Yeah its pretty bad. but its fun to have asshats in a pvp game community since it just fuels your game rage.
also on forums it is just a flamefest but some of the posters there are actually really funny. the rampart racism is the only thing that really bothers me.
its easy to play a mmo with a good guild and just ignore the general community. I don't see why people care. plus the internet is full of asshats, what game ever did have a good community? must have been some time ago imo
At least these guys have their own game now... making them slightly less likely to pop up in something I'm playing. Go Darkfall!
This is a very good point. I am however sick of someone asking about DFO, I give my opinion from my beta time. Only because I m not all positive about it they jump all over me. Now it s just become entertaining actually, you can say anything and they ll freak out. If you look at my post history, you ll see me describing this exact thing about the foul mouthed community. I for one enjoy MMO s and can easily /ignore people in games. This game however was terrible, i would have spent most of my playing time doing such. As you said above now they have their own little world to act this way.
I'm guessing that there are now threads in other gaming forums where people are making the phrase, "Go back to Darkfall!" a popular put-down for those e-peening fools that like to call others carebears and call themselves "hardcore".

You know the amusing thing I find about that community is that when I was having my arguments with the fanbois as I did they repeatedly kept on whining at me about how I wasn't hardcore enough to play Darkfall or that sandbox MMORPGs weren't for me ( hahahah thats a good one I played Pre-Cu SWG ) I used some wordplay and they basically tripped over themselves instantly saying that they used macro's etc.
*gasp* Now I know why I've been having such a terrible time playing these games! I haven't been cheating like everyone else!
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
You have to laugh - people wanted a pvp game with a "sandbox" feel and a full loot system, then they scream and wail when they get exactly what they wanted! Be careful what you wish for.
FFA or small niche games always have the worst communities.
Thats to broad to say that. MO community so far has been great and Earthrises seems to be great as well. Ryzom community wasnt bad either. Darkfalls had some real special folks in it to push it over the top. Just because someone likes FFA pvp doesnt mean they are a live in the basement 35 yr old virgin or a nerdy angst ridden teenager. Granted there are bad apples that create the stereotype in every situation.
Unfortunate as it is,those are the types who's voice will be the loudest and thus will recieve judgement upon the community as a whole. The minute you see someone say "go back to wow, noob" or "carebear" its one of those guys sitting there typing it.
What's hilarious is the whole join date = some sort of internet rep/credibility. The 'vets' act like they're popular jocks and treat newcomers ("08'ers" and "09'ers") like freshmen. "You don't deserve to play Darkfall, har har har!" *toilet dunk*

They are defensive because they know the game is an unfinished bugged cesspool of exploits, but they don't want to admit it as they waited so long for it. It's also called "wearing rose colored glasses".
Perdition made an excellent point though... if a few hundred of those players just stick to Darkfall, they won't infect the other games, which is a win for all the other MMO players.

If you allow your community (pre-release) to be dominated by a bunch of foul mouthed, flaming, trash talking fuckwads (even if they are Fanbois too) then can you really be surprised when your game community (post release) is dominated by the very same people?
Developers often neglect their community early in the development of their game (Aventurine did) and it is a huge mistake. Now Aventurine seems to be interested in 'fixing up' their community - way too late.
People will only come to a community and stay there if they feel comfortable there.
So, if you make it clear from the very beginning what sort of community you expect, and set standards supporting that (standards - not just forum rules) then you will build a community that will support those standards and in the end the community will almost police itself.
For example:
When someone posts "tl;dr" = Mod comment could be 'If you are not prepared to read the OP comments feel free to avoid posting spam in the thread. Enjoy your 24 hour rest from the forum to catch up on your reading.'
"Go back to WoW" = 'Please do not encourage our potential customers to return to the opposition. We have put a lot of time and effort into getting them here in the first place! Take 24 hours to think on it.'
"STFU" = 'No - you STFU for 3 days.'
"Troll" (When the troll actually includes an argument - valid or not) = 'We value all comments here. If you have a counter argument or correction we suggest that when you return to the forum in 3 days from now you share it with the community in a rational and logical manner.'
etc.
Do that sort of thing from day one and watch your community grow.
Unless you LIKE flamers, trolls and fanbois of course...

that was one of the most valuable posts I have read in a long time, that sums up all the good practices of community management.

Not like the general forum cares. No-one wants the DF forums to degenerate into the cesspool of whiny shit that is the US Warcraft forums.
There's no risk for that, as the Darkfall forums are already WAY WORSE than the WoW forums ever were.

The Darkfall Community is the way it is now because it was allowed to grow that way.
Online communities grow from the very beginning - and in MMOs this is very important.
