Combat looks boring...

D3lit3D3lit3 Member Posts: 95

That's really the only thing preventing me from buying the game, maybe some of you could change my mind lol because I really want to get into it.

I watched a lot of videos, for melee you click the LMB and attack, but the animation is the same every freakin' time! It's this vertical slash animation, and you have to do it for like 10 times. No other animation. That's it.

And the same thing for the magic. Little blue balls flying around the place. And I doubt those balls turn green when you get more skill.

Basically the animations suck in term making the combat more boring. There's the vertical slash, and the little 'cast the blue ball' animation.

Now if it had AoC combat/animations it would own.

    You are exactly correct...

    Stick with AoC, it rocks!

Actually thats not the only thing. They won't actually let you buy it in the first place :P

The combat is ok, playing it is always better than watching it (in all games) Melee Combat in DF is no exception, it can be quite exciting (especially compaired to most of the other mmorps with some sort of pvp)

Fighting in DF is all about positioning, not the type of attack, so there is a lot going on.

I could be an arse and say there are 2 types of melee attack horizontal and a vertical slash, but thats just being pedantic :P

The magic your talking about is the very basic "free" spell. It consumes no reagents and does very little damage, but its free to use, so is used all the time. Higher level spells cause more damage and look different (obviously) magic in DF requires a pretty high level and costs a bit of gold, so you wont see much of that yet.

Combat in DF breaks down to a zerging click-spam fest, people exploiting the alignment system while nutcupping on the guard towers, or wilderness ganks... its like Shadowbane, but even less interesting...

Now if only there was Shadowbane2 without click-to-move and a stable engine...

If what you want is flashy animations then Darkfall is not for you.

The melee combat system is a lot of fun, to me it's what makes the game. It's not quite up to Mount & Blade for directional swinging and blocking, but it has enough to make combat a challenge.

What you see in combat in early stages against NPC's is running up and mashing the left mouse button. The goblin might circle or run, but you don't have to do more than circle a bit to catch him.

What that becomes against a skilled opponent is backing out of range, ducking, and strafing much more. It's a very challenging thing against a good opponent.

One versus one it's still not cutting edge, but I'd say it's fun as anything out there. more than one on either side is where this combat shines. Because of friendly fire it's important to put your opponent in the right position. If they have multiples then you want to keep them hitting eachother and not you. If you have multiple then you keep trying to get them in a position where you can body block them and leave your entire group open to attack.

I've been in fights 1v3 where the 1 person won. (losing side) I've been on the winning side in more after I got used to the controls.

I've played AoC, War, WoW, Vanguard and others, the game is fun to play even when it feels a bit clunky.

DF combat is FPS/TPS like. For those idi... people who don't understand it there are alotta "more appropriate" games.

  • nikoliathnikoliath Member UncommonPosts: 1,154

Yes, i thought it LOOKED boring too, until I bothered to actually put money where my mouth is and try it for myself. When you are busy fighting for your life and indeed your loot, you don't give a f**k what the animation looks like on the melee swing.

Alright, you asll make valid points. But a bit more on this positioning...

Positioning I think is nothing more than moving away from your guildmates so you don't FF them, right? Or is it 'real' positioning where you take more damage if you're attacked in the back as opposed to up front and with a shield. Right?

Also, yes it just came out but I don't think I've seen a patch that adds new animations in a game...is that possible?

  • AviyurAviyur Member Posts: 53

    Combat is like Oblivion basically.

You either like it or yer don't, make your decision based on that.

Yes, you take more damage from behind, and drain more stam than if hit from the front.

Also a shiled reduces damage when used by up to 90%.

Also... they did add animations in a patch. the sword now sings from left to right, and then from right to left, each swing having 2 different animations.

    its not much.

Darkfall combat is a breath of fresh air in the stale combat that is common in most of todays mmorpgs.

and anyone who say's the combat is basic i say this: Arkums razor.

THe Backstreet Boys was a massively popular band, doesnt mean they had much depth to their music. Popular does not always mean good or full of depth.

Is just the looks of it..if you behind the keyboard and execute the combat then it becomes a lot of fun and a skilled player will make the difference..

Then DarkFall offers countless types of combat oppurtunities ..

1 vs 1 , 1 vs smal majority, 1 vs being ganked by many, small x vs x skirmishes,

those encounters who lure you into actions that makes you loose your advantage, plain thievs who only intention is to rob your goods,  those who jump you and surprise you out the dark, massive battles for citys of all types - G vs G, G vs allainces, alliances vs alliances, race vs race, faction vs faction  ..

So which combat  typoe of those i have mentioned looked boring ?

I find Darkfall combat very exciting, especially sine there can be a huge gain or loss for you depending on the outcome.    If you are used to how WoW combat looks, I can see why DF combat would appear boring.   There is alot more than just clicking the LMB though and no video is going to educate  you on the adrenaline rush either player is having when they are wearing their finest suit of armor and putting it on the line.

Hehhehe, reminds me of some guy yesterday who got killed by someone else right infront of me, looted the corpse and legged it. They both chased me down to get the stuff and fight over it again =/

Yeah I saw that video of these  people fighting this dragon, and it looked retarded. All vertical swings, so is that all you do in PvE stand next to the mob and click a mouse button?

Now PvP im sure it may be a bit more fun cuz your using your wsad and clicking a mouse button but still Ive Done PvP in WoW and WAR and you move around a lot and you actually press more buttons than a mouse click, but it is auto attack but you have to be facing the right way or be in range for your abilities to work.

All i see in Darfall is people hacking away at each other I have not seen one special ability. If im wrong someone please correct me, I just don't see DF style combat being any better than and auto attack game.

Again, popular doesnt mean quality. As a society, we are willing to pay for the latest fad, it is the nature of the beast. The guy who invented the pet rock was cashing all those checks from idiots in the 70s. Doesnt mean it was a good product, just means as a whole, we are stupid and will buy just about anything.

It may look boring but it is not imo. I prefer having fast attacks than seeing a nice animation of a fatality especially since in there you have to look around most of the time. Keep also in mind that most of the players are not that advanced and the skillset of one weapon only may be enough to drain all of your skill cap points. I don't know what other kinds of animations these skills may have.

Currently i try to learn how to parry effectively and switch sets of weapons as fast as possible. This is not boring and it gives you the feeling that you have total control of your character. It's not tab and click which needs something interesting for you to see in order not to get bored.

It's like Sex. You may find it boring when watching it but it's not when you do it.

Thats a good one and for the record, I played in beta unless theres been a drastic improvement I'll happily keep parroting this game is crap like I do with all the others.

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
