I downloaded the trial yesterday and even though I had no expectations, the game kept me 'hooked up' for 10 hours straight.
I picked Knight of Blazing Sun and I went pretty much directly for PvP - scenerios first, then area at the north of the map, that is not instanced - I have to say I was not exploring the game much, just PvPed. After 10 hours of gameplay I ended up lvl 9 on both ranks with +300 PKs and died a few times only.
The game seems to lack depth(yeah, I am EVE player , but it's not at the expense of fun. I was surprised how PvP is accessible since low lvls.
The classes seem balanced(played 1 class only) so far even though I felt a bit overpowered
@ MYTHIC - give trial accounts OpenRvR server dammit! :-D
Comments
Thats one of the things i like most in WO. for some reason every class feels overpowered, especially in pve content, but they are still balanced enough in pvp.
Yeah, I just finished the trial myself and I was stunned. I simply can't believe this game isn't far more popular than it is, even with bugs and rough edges.
Though there's room for polish and improvement, from my perspective, the core game is quite strong and very enjoyable.
I can only assume it wasn't (isn't) "hardcore" enough for diehard PvP enthusiasts, and too scary for the most apprehensive carebears. Personally, I had written it off as yet another fantasy game too similar to WoW, but man I couldn't have been more mistaken. I'm grateful for the opportunity the free trial gave me to make up my own mind, and I'm strongly considering starting a subscription.
Honestly, anyone reading this who hasn't tried it already, do yourself a favor and give the trial a shot. You just might find yourself as surprised as I was.
Honestly there is a very good reason it's not as popular, and that's because it is rather linear. It's very tedious gameplay, theres a reason why you can't go above level 10 on the trail, and that's because you might actually manage to figure that out. The game has a HUGE potential but it's falling short.
I just tried the trail to see how the gameplay was now. I don't like it, it's still the same as before when I played....shame!
Anyways I hope you guys do play it, because I'd like to find an mmo that keeps me engrossed like GW did
I like cookies.
Got to agree, if you haven't tried the game you really should give it o go.

I recently spent time on the trial as well, but didn't get a great feel out of it. I'm not a quester, or a pvper. I'm more into socialising, and the trial didn't give me a good impression of the game.
I was locked out of picking the server that my friends play on. I don't work during the first shift hours, and there were several days that if I popped on here or there, the servers were down, which really irritated me. This long into the game, that shouldn't be an issue. Scheduled maintance, is one thing, but only one day was that the reason.
The pvp mini games were all right, but reminded me too much of guild wars. In fact, the entire game reminded me of guild wars. It was nice to be able to wait for the pvp while doing pve, rather than waiting in a room. One of the servers I played on, maybe four hours total, I was able to get into about five mini games, which was a nice way to break up the monotony of kill quests, but on a different server (different faction) I played for about three hours and never was able to get into a game.
Leveling is definitely quest driven. I was able to gain more exp through quests than killing monsters, which some people love, but I hate gopher missions, which is what all of them were.
I never made it past level 7 on any of the toons I tried. It's not a game I could get into really. I think it's much better than some of the other games out there, but there is nothing new or great about it. The greatest detriment that it had for me right off the bat, is that I am a social gamer, I have friends that play the game, and because it was a trial, I couldn't chat with them, so it was on a downward spiral from the get go.
Seems to be a contradiction?
"TO MICHAEL!"
WAR do have some great potential and a really good world but you don't see the bad stuff in the trial.
It is worth buying and playing a month (yeah, it is fun for a while but the game do still need some work. I think it will need an expansion to get better.
I am a big fan of the old pen and paper RPG and I think they should have worked harder to make the world feel more like the RPG game, the got the dark humour right but forgot the horror of the RPG game.Humans shoud be able to mutate and the storys could have been better. Also they should add some Snotball/Bloodbowl to the game, that would make a fun scenario.
My biggest problem with the game is the level system however, it goes against the lore completley.
On the plus side, they made Altdorf very good and much of the graphics fits well into the lore.
I think WAR will be an intresting game in a year or 2 but right now it is just a game among others, fun for a while but nothing that makes me stay a long while.
Wait untill you can raise more than level 10, the you will start to find out why so many players left. The pve part is so linear and sooooo boing, even the types of mobs that you kill is so limited.....
But i like the PQ, and graphics ( not the animation though), and love the starting area, very well done. I will come back in 4 years time XD
RIP Orc Choppa
Here is the wrap from someone that actually played the game
Yes the game is amazing - for first ten levels ... then from next ten levels it gets tedious...and than for next ten levels you are wondering why are you playing this cow dung... and than for next ten levels you can only call yourself resistant to bordom and repetition
Guys, its the AOC syndrom
WAR actually seems like good game at beggining, but it quickly drops into empty boring cathegory at higher levels.
I never regreted more buying a MMO
And i even bought Tabula Rasa , and AOC (that didnt even work on my PC)
Just a guess, but 300PK's in 9 levels and 10 hours. In a month or two, when your kill counts are 10 or 20K, will you really care anymore? By making them so easy and frequent, (and I'm assuming the dying counts will be similar and equally meaningless) you can understand why the game might not have a long term appeal.
Add in mediocre crafting, pve and socialization activities and you have more of a short term game than a long term world.

How is it "linear"? There are three different realms you can do quests in at any level, and quest chains are generally short. There are also public quests all over every map, and you can even level at a decent rate just killing overland mobs. If PvE isn't your thing, you can jump right in to RvR and level all the way to 40 strictly though PvP combat.... which is available in 3-6 different zones at any time, depending on your level.
I also don't know what you mean by tedious.. It's pretty standard RPG combat, classes and controls. I guess if you think all RPGs are tedious, then I can see that. Otherwise, it's a fun ride, reasonably fast leveling, plenty of choices on how to level and a decent amount of loot along the way.
That bit about them not limiting the trial to level 10 is just silly. Almost everyone playing agrees that tiers 2 and 3 are great. Tier one is just for getting your feet wet and tier 4 has some issues of it's own... Issues i can wait for them to fix because there is plenty to keep me busy while they smooth the wrinkles. I have never been in to PvP much, but this game changed that for me. I have three toons in tier three and a few in tier two, with a new Slayer starting in a few days.
I have played a lot of MMOs, almost all them to be honest, and I have really never enjoyed one as much as this. The game does have it's assorted issues, but it is a great game overall. If you haven't tried it, you should check out the ten day trial and see what you are missing.
edit because I somehow missed the last line. I can't believe a Guild Wars fan would call anything Linear... That game is lime an RPG on rails... and not really a game i consider to be an MMO to begin with. I mean... the PvE part of that game only takes a week or two to complete. From there it's an arena PvP game. I can't think of a single way in which WAR is more linear or tedious than GW.

I also downloaded the trial yesterday, my first issue was that the language of the server wasn't obvious, it should stick out like a sore thumb not be hidden in brackets. Made the first character on a Spanish server in error. However corrected that error and tried again.
Next major problem was LAAAAAAAGGGGG. I would press the attack button, nothing would happen, i press it a few more times, get fed up and walk away from the combat, next thing i know is i get a string of hits register and im now nowhere near the marauder and ive lost track of which one it was, or im dead on the floor as a horde of mauraders that were not there 1 sec before have apppeared.
Im sorry, ive been into GW for a long long time and was really looking forward to the trial, but this but a big nail in the coffin.
Ive played in open betas of other MMORPG's stress testing thier servers and never have I had such bad lag like this, And this is from a finished product that been out for a year?? Mythic what are you doing? Did you not expect alot of players to join up for the trial?
End of rant
Not at all. When I played, there were mostly ranged opponents to deal with. I just rushed to close up and pwned 4 lvl higher players in no time.
It is fine when high dps classes are squishy and fall to tanks.
How many kills you make in 10 hours of playing Counter Strike? And people still playing that game for years.
I own a copy of GW and was playing the game not more than 4 hours. I think GW is better game but has got one very big disadvantage - instanced world

Whoops should have made myself clearer on this point. By GW I meant Games Workshop. And by long time I think its 20 years this year!!!
yeah free trial is great.
Game still lacks content but the pieces are in place for a great game to keep growing. Of all the other MMO's that have been dropping, you arne't going to find one more complete off the get go.
If you're still skeptical, check back in a year after the massive RvR/PvP/PvE dungeon has been implemented along with a lot of the world dungeons and new armor/ability sets. If this game has any direction similar to DAoC (which it appears to have now since release) then theres nothing but good things continuing to come. Afterall, Mythic did revamp DAoC endgame with new frontiers so I have no doubt that they'll continue to improve things as necessary.
I downloaded the trial and i'm having a blast. I don't PvP in games AT ALL, you'll never see me pvping, i just don't care for it, but this game i'm fiending for it. I'm playing a Witch Hunter (because i played one in the fantasy game, and i like the novels of them, not because they are the rogue class).
Only lag problems i hit is during large battles in the Tier 1 open RVR, other than that its fine. But i have no complaints about grinding or anything because i just love warhammer, and going into it all i expected out of it was warhammer and thats what i got. I enjoy killing enemies of the oldworld and soon slayers are coming out. And today, i met my novel heroes Gotrek and Felix and i wailed like a fangirl.
So yea, most people don't enjoy because of the gameplay, and thats fine, its not your cup of tea, but to those who like warhammer, you MIGHT enjoy this, or not; thats why there is a trial version finally out
I didnt' start the trial, but started up again about 3 weeks ago. Been having a blast. Been doing a lot of t2 and some t3. really waiting for the choppa though hehe. I haven't had any lag until they put in twisting tower scenario and I figured that was because it was new and put in for bitter rivals.
I just wish their renown skills were more than just stat increases though like daoc, hehe. Oh and the earlier comment about daoc, I actually liked the old frontiers better. A lot of the new things they added hurt the game more than helped, so hopefully it is the opposite here. Must say though, still like daoc a lot more than war, but I am having fun so far. I miss that 3rd realm and that true chaos when everyone is battling it out.
I have been playing the game since launch and have injoyed almost every min i played. Ya there are some issues but i look past them. I hope some of you who are trying the free trail come and play full time. good luck and see you on the battle field.
Have No Fear Cohas is here!!!
I am no Warhammer fan.
I was ignorant to the whole franchise (books/games/pen and paper whatever)
I saw ZERO videos before release and I couldn't care less.
I had no idea what it was about.
So I had some extra cash and was browsing D2D and they had Warhammer for sale preorder. Read the features, sounded good and bought it. That was my first contact with the game.
anyway, game launched I played up to 10 with DoK, tried several others up to 10 also and froze account cause I had no time to play. I was neither positive or negative about the game, it seemed ok but played like 2-3 days, my server felt empty tho
Anyways, 2 months(around late November) to see what's going on and I decided to select a high population server and rolled Order / Warrior Priest.
Funny thing is I'm now rank 32 and renown 29... And I did go thru some weeks of vacation and exams.
So turns out Im having tremendous fun in the game, I don't really take it seriously and nitpick every single thing.
Can use improvement but Mythic shows they're willing. They did add quite a lot since release and that's a good sign for me.
I still don't get the "repetitive" and "linear" arguments tho. How is Counter-Strike not linear or repetitive ? How about WoW ? I'm sure you do NEW and EXCITING THINGS in these DYNAMIC & DAILY CHANGING games ? I played both extensively and they're no different to WAR to be honest.
I find WAR easy to get into, no "hardcore stuff", no elitists (at least havent met any yet), everything is done quite fast and easy and the classes do feel strong yet balanced. I like how you don't have a mana bar but you got AP and your mechanic so in the most frantic fights you can keep fighting for ages.
I've had many exciting and fierce keep sieges (in attack and defense) - Yeap its just door1, door2, keep lord but I think the fun part lies in simplicity if you ask me.
I think it can only get better...So far I'm having fun and never got bored... It's weird that people who always flame games are the ones "waiting for the messiah of MMOs". My opinion ? Won't happen, stop wasting ur time waiting and arguing and find a game you can at least have fun in.
To those of you reporting "lag". Try turning off spell effects, at least on everyone but yourself. My sons were both getting that on their machines before turning them off. Mine will run fine with them on most of the time, but in large keep siege situations I will get long pauses firing skills and a lot of stuttering. I turned mine off as well, since any edge in PvP is worth having.
I haven't seen anything that looked like actual data transfer lag in the game... with the exception of T4 fortress siege. There just aren't any server side issues like that in the first three tiers.

To mention this game in the same sentence as AoC, shows how little you know about gaming.
Everyone knows War needs work and polish. Funcom just plain lied and deceived regarding shortcomings, whereas Mythic are constantly making an effort to meet the players halfway.
Saying the games are remotely similar is a sick joke. I am one of War's biggest critics, yet I see potential here, unlike any at all in AoC.
Quoted for truth plus also disable Lightmaps and Specular
helps A LOT

Agreed comparing AOC and WAR is impossible. They are fundamentally different games.
But AOC managed to grab great reviews and fair number of sales by a little trick : Its first 20 levels were awesome. Which was enough to trick people into buying the game.
WAR learned from them. And starting material in WAR is highly polished and fun.
It is very good game until level 10. By the time you reach level 20-30 you will be regretting you bought the game.
Here are some of the reasons:
1. WAR is not open world PVP game because EVERYONE just plays instanced battlegrounds. ( its like paying subscription to play Guild Wars arenas, or Counter strike, or Savage 2) To make things worse there are only handfull of BGs for each tear. And you will play them thousand times over - which is good if you love REPETITION
2. You have couple of UBER classes. And than you have some that are total junk. Also its obvious developers invested way more thought and love into Destruction side. And it shows ->
3. Realm is unballanced. When i played it was 10:1 destruction vs order
4. PVE is horrible. Its so boring and bland and unimaginative, it hurts me just to think about it.
5. When i played two months ago - the game was EMPTY. There was days i didnt see one single player - except in Battleground scenarios ( and i allready commented those )
There you go.
Enjoy being suckered into buying the game
Hey Gdemami, I'm happy that people like you finally get to try the game without committing 60 bucks. War is very strongly criticized by many people on many forums but the honest suggestion is, everyone should give it a try to make up their own mind. If thousands of people continuously tell you that a wonderful strawberry icecream tastes like crap... you're not going to taste it even if it isn't true
What most people say about Rank 10+ being tedious and boring... it IS half true, but I need to qualify that carefully:
Rank 1-10 you're getting useful and POWERFUL abilities almost every rank, and every piece of new gear changes your appearance, everything comes to you blazing fast. However, as with any other MMO, your level/rank reaches a point where the rush slows down, you get abilities slower, you get gear slower, everything "slows down", that is definitely true for War as well. However the initial 1-10 skill acquisition rush is so fast in War that the slow down suddenly feels like a complete halt; people essentially get spoiled in T1 and T2+ feels just that much worse.
It does "feel" tedious past some points, I can't deny that because I've stopped several characters in mid or late-T2 myself as well. But the honest truth is... every time I start up a new class and go at it, it's still wonderfully FUN, regardless of when I get bored... isn't having FUN the point ? Does it really matter what rank you're having fun at?
For Lobotomist:
I do agree with you on almost everything you said regarding population, lack of open PvP, and empty world...
I realize this can't change your mind about the game, but I just want you to know that they are consolidating empty/small servers as we speak, there are now a healthy 8-10 US servers in Med/Med or higher status during the prime of the night. I've taken people's advice and tried a high population Open RvR server... and I can honestly say the experience is night and day, low population servers completely destroy this game, I can even understand why you would want to call it piece of dung if you had a horrible experience from lack of players.
I don't say this in defense of War, none of us should HAVE TO start over on a high server just to experience the game in its intended fashion, I just want the prospective players to be informed that they should pick their servers very very carefully for their best experience.
She cuts me into a thousand beautiful pieces...
