I dont get the idea why people play a different gender than themselves at all. I play an idealized version of me, I want to feel like "hey thats me living that heroic life" and not "hey I watch some good looking char that isnt me like some barbie doll doing stuff." I roleplay me or aspects of me. Playing something I could not relate to would totally beat the point of playing a MMO for me.

Tomb Raider made it ok for men to play female characters
You're off by at least a decade. I'm not sure if Metroid was the first commercially successful game where you played a female character, but it came long before Tomb Raider. And, of course, you didn't find out that Samus was female until after beating the game, at which point it's kind of too late to protest even if so inclined.
In Super Mario Bros. 2, you knew that Princess Toadstool was female right from the start. I'm not aware of anyone who said, oh no, I can't play a female character!
My reason....married 15 years, 4 kids. My 8 year old daughter always has and continues to pick my toon's appearance when I roll a character. She always picks cute dark short hair female characters. Plain and simple.
WoW is a good example of guys playing gal toons. Im sure this game play is the norm for most if not all MMO's I myself will play a gal toon just because I would rather enjoy the look of my creation with the pleasantness of a female toon as I lvl her up. etc.... I also prefer to see a gals ass running then some dudes lol. Here is the real kicker in the ol GEM SACK. When I just beat some poor sap playing a gal toon in pvp. Now he has to go to be wondering if he just got beat by a GAL.
What are your thoughts......
I think the idea is retarded to say the least. There is ONLY one way i could find it acceptable and that is if the game gave a certain female class something desirable from the game.Example the Mithra class in FFXI,makes for a great THIEF or melee class because of its high Dexterity. If the class is found exactly the same in a male counterpart, then there is no reason for the male to play the female. There is actually a lot of reasons why i don't like it,but i don't want to get into arguments over the reasons,so i won't list them all.It does not always stem from a gal beating a guy, that part i couldn't care less about,as a lot of game play is PVE so it would not be a factor.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

There's only one reason people get upset when someone plays a gender other than their own in a video game, and it's almost always men that get upset for this reason. They want to hit on girls in the game, and they are embarrassed to find out they are hitting on another guy. That's it.
Easy rule of thumb: All players in the game, are guys, unless you meet them in person. No offense girl gamers, I know you are playing, but unless I meet you in person (and I'm never going to because it's just a game) you are a guy.
Play the game, don't ninja loot, don't kill steal, don't get me wiped, dont' act like an asshat, and I don't care if you are a girl, a guy, 14, or 84. Just be a nice person. It's a game, not Match.com or any other online dating service.
Guys, please. If you're looking to chat with real girls, it costs money. Sign up for Eharmony or something like that.

From Russia with love, KiSS KISS Seriously peeps have been doing it for ages if you look back in history, Scots wear kilts (skirts) & judges still wear long haired wigs! In mmorpg's its a form of "be nice" attention seeking or the opposite if a girl is a man & I have no dought it has become popular with the gay community.
What does a kilt and judges wearing "wigs" have to do with this? Long ago, kilts and judge's wigs were not a sign of feminity. Those "wigs" for exemple have been used around 1400-1700 (probably 1800 too but not sure) by nobles (won't name the reason why as it's .....dirty.....) and judges kept those wigs as a sign of authority.

Even though I'm a man, I will sometimes play Girl characters for various reasons. I've seen games where male characters looks like people who haven't sh!t for years, games where the female and male characters have different movement pattern, games where female simply looks more badass than a man with a Two-Handed Giant Double Axe. Note that I also play as male character as often as possible but it seems sometimes you just can't escape it.
Must say it's funny though to find those idiot people who see a female character and try to hook with her (even though the she is actually a he). The whole conversation is priceless.
I'll play both. Usually a male as my main though. I have a certain number of favorite names, both male and female, so I make characters accordingly. There are some exceptions when I play 1 gender more than another and that is usually ascethics. When I played daoc, and I was playing my hibernian characters and I liked to play casters, I would choose a lurikeen. Both looked fine to me, so I didn't care, but I could not stand the way the males ran. It was horrid.
Some games have races that are only male or female, so I chose whatever was available. I remember when I played WoW for a bit, if I happened to play a human, I couldn't stand the men, so chose a female char. I think back in EQ, I primarily chose male chars since I liked the look of them.
As far as treating people as male or female, I don't get into any of that when playing. I just care if they can play and are not an idiot and an ass. Usually I can tell what someone is anyway, but I just don't care, lol. Oh, I've also known women who use to play male characters so they wouldn't be bothered all the time, lol.

I mostly agree with this ^^
If its a real woman she probably doesn't want you hitting on her anyway (well, I suppose she -could- but its not always appropriate to do so anyway). Treating all players on the basis of how they act during the game is a far better way for everyone to get along.
And you don't need to pay money to talk to real girls, you just have to go outside sometime... Unless you only meet people online.
Edit: I don't have any problem with people playing the opposite of their gender for the record. There are plenty of male-targeted single player games with female protaganists anyway. If they prefer it that way, no reason for them to not do so online.

To be honest, the above is what i find the most disturbing part of your post. Not to be picking on you but "so what" if a woman beats a man?
It seems to me that your thinking is a bit archaic (to be nice) and that the idea of woman beating a man is emasculating somehow?
I don't know, it just seems a bit backwards to me. So if your wife made more money than you would that be a problem? Or if you had a female supervisor? If a woman is smarter than you is that a problem?
I do believe that there are differences between men and women (besides the physical) but I don't believe the differences are so wide that one can ignore the fact that women are people with strengths and weaknesses just like men.

If a person decides to get a sex change, that's entirely their choice and the same goes for fantasy based games and lots of other things for that matter.
Hence the term ROLE-playing.
Now let me ask you this, which is more gay? A dude that is staring for hours at a hot scantily clad female avatar, or a dude that is starting for hours at a hot scantily male avatar?

You have no clue. I respect everybody. I treat men like men and ladies like ladies but if you cant separate the difference then good luck with your future relationships. I prefer to play with real female players compared to males. Why? Generally i find them more interesting to spend my time with then male players. I do get a kick out of the lame reason some guys try to sell to you as why they play female toons. I have many lady friends even years after not playing a MMO that we met in.. They were real when we met and they are real now.
I'm a male and I've always played male characters although I agree that women characters have better looking models and their gear fits better than most male characters. I don't have a problem with male playing women characters at all, it just sort of questionable when one goes full tilt with it. Like winking at male toons, blowing kisses and other emotes. I was a guildmaster and had a guy who played a female toon who did these things. I thought he was a female until he signed up to the guild's messageboard he did so as a male. He was always doing sublte things like calling male toons hun or babe, and very e-affectionate(if that's a term lol) to all of the male toons he quested with in the guild. I play the game with my wife, she was the assisnt GM so it didn't bother me either way really as I wasn't flirting and I didn't and don't play mmorpg to hit on chicks. It's just sort of odd that he was behaving as a woman, and he'd never come on to vent or teamspeak as he didn't want to use his speaking voice.
When I brought it up in casual conversation, he ended up leaving the guild. Weird...was a damn good guild officer. I think it's a some what deeper issue when someone who is male plays a female toon and interact with male players as a female player would and does it for over a year. I mean to each it's own. It doesn't bother me being that I take social interactions within the game with a grain of salt, but I can understand how a person who doesn't think like I do could be upset by something like this.
MMORPG played in order played: Sims Online, WoW, CoX, EQ2, LinksRealm, LOTRO,TOR...and counting
someone once said, so i cant take the credit for it, he said (i think it was a he) you know what MMORPG stands for, i said yes it means massive multiplayer online role playing game. He lol'd me and said no, it means Mostly Men Online Role Playing Girls, as i say i think it was a guy but it could well of been a gal
I'm married with a wonderful wife (also a gamer) and young son (becoming a GREAT gamer)
I play a Female Toon in most MMO's I play, I like the look of it more than staring at a guys ass for hours on end, I guess it all depends on how you play, if you RP as a woman and pretend to be a woman to gain unworked for items/cash then I would put that down as either good tactics or your just a whore, now if you actually pretend to be a woman and cyber with guys then sorry but you need to look at your sexual preferances and work out what you really want to be.
I have always played Melee charaters as males and casters as females. I honestly do not know why, just always do.
I think its a problem only if the guy behind the female charater acts like a female to get free stuff from lonely gamer guys. Personally I always let people know I am a male behind my female toons just so I do not get hit on.
If its werid that I play a female charater then I guess I am werid.
Some people play mmos to write a story. They create a character for that story, and it can easily be a male or female character.
Others (like me) play mmos to 'be in that world.' Not like RP, but, it's kinda like I view all rpgs and mmorpgs as medieval simulators. Maybe like the holodecks from star trek. I view them as an opportunity to put myself into that cool world. And myself is not a woman, so I don't want the virtual representation of myself in that world to be a woman.
THAT is why rpgs where class determines sex (Diablo 2 for example) piss me off so damned much. Not because I'm a "homophobe" but because I don't want to pretend to be a woman when I go and play around in this fantasy world. And it also doesn't mean that every guy who makes a female character wants to pretend to be a woman, it just means that they are the type of person that I mentioned in my first paragraph.

Yeah so guys like this usually are the ones that I try to stay away from playing. These kinds of reasons usually point out a deeper flaw in character....
On another note, I think it is a fine choice to allow, but I really think that characters should have their inspection page listed with the account owners sex. Seriously, guys that fake it or use this to their advantage need to be shot. No sympathy for any of them.
My blog is a continuing story of what MMO's should be like.
I have always played Melee charaters as males and casters as females. I honestly do not know why, just always do. I do to. I think females look awkward in melee since its about strength and women aren't strong. ...small gal with a big hammer just ain't right ...and the punishment the tank gets. I don't like to hurt women. I think its a problem only if the guy behind the female charater acts like a female to get free stuff from lonely gamer guys. Personally I always let people know I am a male behind my female toons just so I do not get hit on. If its werid that I play a female charater then I guess I am werid.
I really don't see this as a problem. So what if I play a female character? -The view is better. Usually people pick up quite fast that I'm a guy and if they don't I make it clear to them. I know a lot of guys who play female characters. They don't pose as female players online and it is perfectly acceptable.
1. To prohibit players from playing what they want is ridiculous. I'd assume that there's an ideological or religious agenda behind this.
2. People shouldn't make any assuptions about the player based on the character. This is just good common sense.
3. Anonymity should be protected. This includes the player's gender.

MMORPGs are about fighting.
Fighting = males
The ones that aren't are usually about crafting.
Crafting = males
The ones that aren't either of theses are virtual chatrooms.
Virtual chatrooms = females
Then there are ones that combine those two, or three
Second Lfe: Virtual chatroom + crafting = equal balance
EVE: Fighting + crafting = All males
Ones that combine the three are 2/3 males 1/3 female, unless it focuses on the casual side, in case it might equal things out.
That's why WoW has a few females playing it, though it is certainly no virtual chatroom.
(And I'm not even going to count in 'adult' video games here. That's just stupid/pathetic)

I usually play male characters.
I Role Play...so it just feels weird trying to play as a girl when I'm a guy IRL.
I do have some female alts...but I usually just do it to see which models I like the best.

Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!
Sooner or Later
