EVE Online: Our Exclusive Preview of "Exodus"

AdminAdmin Administrator RarePosts: 5,623

Our own Reed Hubbard recently got the chance to take a tour of the upcoming free expansion for EVE Online - "Exodus".  This new expansion will add many new and exciting aspects to the game.  Here is an excerpt from the article:

image Although classified as a MMORPG, EVE Online has often danced in the fringes of the genre. Developer Crowd Control Productions has chosen to embrace a rich economic framework and loosely restricted PvP over more conventional MMORPG trappings. This approach has garnered the persistent universe many fans, but has left others cold as the depths of space. However, this may all change soon. The epic universe of EVE Online is about to experience a major upheaval with its next expansion. Formerly known by the codename Shiva, the upcoming addition to EVE Online is entitled Exodus, and it represents a huge leap forward in both content and direction.

One of the new features in the Exodus expansion is the introduction of complexes. Alternately known as "dungeons," complexes are progressive Player vs. Environment settings where groups of players must defeat numerous NPC opponents to gain access to more difficult stages. For example, a gang of players may defeat a number of pirates to obtain the key to a dormant jumpgate. Upon activation, the gang jumps to a zone not accessible through conventional means of travel where the players must overcome more challenging opposition. Successful completion of all stages may yield the conquerors rare items, huge monetary rewards, and other desirable loot.

    EVE online RULES  image

I tried earth and beyond and it sucked - it was nothing compared to eve, even though eve was quite glitchy when it came out. EVE kept on improving and adding on. it´s a marvel of a game. Pure brilliance is a synonym for EVE Online image

"I tried earth and beyond and it sucked" image You of course are speaking out of Character eh?

I and many others about 50K are having fun with EVE and its challenges.  As with all things we are creatures of habit so the New build will shake things up a bit.  image Old and new pilots will experience new ways to do things and levels of diffculty not yet felt in the wilds of space.  Be all you can be or just get blown up until you learn better manners in EVE.  image  If manners counted...  Anyway if you have not tried EVE before and like high tech stuff and something that actually challenges your brain give it a try.  "Warning addictive behavior"  After almost a year of playing I can say that it gets better and better.  Good luck future pilots!  www.eve-online.com image

I have deliberately avoided testing shiva/exodus as I am really looking forward to all the expansion has to offer, but I want it to be a surprise for me so it will feel like a new game entirely.

I played EVE for almost a year and tried sooo hard to like it.  Shiva/Exodus will add some neat bells and whistles but doesn't seem to change the things which prevented me from sticking with the game:  Everthing is based on making money and there are only three realistic ways to make money, (1) mine asteroids, (2) kill asteroid miners and take their stuff, or (3) sell hardware to people doing 1 or 2.  I don't see that changing with this new expansion.  EVE has fantastic graphics, a good background story, and a gritty realism that every other space mmorpg lacks.  But in the end I'm looking for adventure, not an economics sim.  I'll come back if in some future expansion they give us a reason to explore that empty galaxy.  Maybe an instanced environment that would enable us to discover some uncharted planets.  Better yet, let us land and explore their surface.  That's what I'm waiting for.

You might want to come back. I was frustrated in the beginning as well, as the learning curve is very steep and you really have to play about a month to grasp the ins and outs of the game. Fortunately, Eve is not only about getting money and mining. It is the player-created content, intrigues, spying, loyality and wars that make the game interesting. Ever been in a player-based corporation fighting wars with another and assemble your army with 5 fellow players waiting with sweaty hands for the showdown? Or attacked a player convoi? Or went to another corp as a spy? This is what makes Eve a great game, unlike the more popular mindless griding trips of other MMORPGs. You can be a part of the same from the very start.

    Hope this helps.

I can not agree that there is a limited way of making a living in EVE. There are many ways to earn isk. From Production, Trade, Mining, Pirating, NPC Killing, Agent Missions, Bounty Hunting (better be pretty good), exploration (selling good locations, finding abandoned ships, etc.), EVE offers plenty of challenges and rewards. It does take time and effort to find your niche in the game.

I have been playing EVE for a long time now (since BETA), and I still enjoy it. While any game you play a long time starts to wear on you, I can not stay away from EVE or my Corporation for too long. Exodus is a breath of fresh air, and I'm sure it will anger some with the changes, but it feels like EVE will be a whole new universe to explore again, only this time I can pilot more useful things than the beggining ships.

The one big gripe about EVE is getting the inital means to support yourself finacially. Once you get over the initial long curve (which can be shortened greatly with the help of a good corp), you can spend less time making isk (money, credits, etc) and more time having fun (by fun I mean PvP, your milage may vary).

If you are looking for an excellent MMORPG, with a strong community, and mature gameplay, this is the time to try. Exodus I think will level some of the playing field, and it's a good time to get in the game. (Of course, I'd wait a week till the expected, by me anyway, glitches get worked out.)

One thing I saw as a problem with EVE was the North American press. EVE got horrible reviews, mainly due to initial launch problems, and the current press does not cover this great game like it should. I've seen very little on Gamespot, Gamespy, and similar websites about the launch of EVE: Exodus. It's a damn shame, as I would have more people playing in my Timezone if EVE would get the kudos it deserves.

It's not everyones game, but it is the most solid MMORPG out there right now.

    Tiny, empty, boring universe.

2D solar systems with 3D flight.

No navigation tools, only warp gates and warp to points.

"Skills" designed solely to make u subscribe longer and invest more time.

Mining "interface" means you can't work in another window while playing, you must drag ore to a can every 20-30 seconds.

Limited ship designs, no user designed ships.

I was hoping they'd make it good, make it less of a chat program with pretty pictures of paint drying, but they can't even get the deployment right and haven't provided any decent download servers.

Spend real money to make fake money playing against AI in a 2D "universe"..... YaY!

OK so you have never seen let alone played EVE ::::18:: lolz

    "Tiny, empty, boring universe. "

Your talking about the 5.000 solar systems and 5.000 stations, 14.000 stargates, 43.000 planets and 230.000 moons in 40 different regions riiiight?

"No navigation tools, only warp gates and warp to points."

The ship control panel offers an easy point-and-click interface for managing your ship speed, you also have control over distance from targets and object and orbital range autopilot and speed settings maps of individual solar systems regions and the entire galaxy with the ability to set waypoints from anywhere to anywhere (I could go on here...)

"Skills" designed solely to make u subscribe longer and invest more time."

Unique Offline Skill Advancement with over 150 skills that allows for offline training.Free-form Professions ensures no limitations on professions. Be a trader, fighter, industrialist, researcher, hunter, pirate or a mixture of them all. the benifit of which is you can become anything and do not have to be logged into the game 24/7 to advance.

"Mining "interface" means you can't work in another window while playing, you must drag ore to a can every 20-30 seconds."

::::01:: hmm this is a tough one....lol ok go to options select ->windowed mode.... ta da! Also you can find another way to mine thats fun maybe? *sighs*

"Limited ship designs, no user designed ships."

with 100 different player ships and more on the way custom ship colors and so on would increase lag eh? besides who wants to see naff player colored ships ::::07::

Well its only a chat program if you make it one and the freedom players have ingame might be too much to those who want to be spoon fed, cry me a river.

Deployment can be bumpy, shit happens. It's always fixed.

I've never had a download off the server at less than 180kbs ::::20::

"Spend real money to make fake money playing against AI in a 2D "universe"..... YaY!2

You can play against the AI NPCs or PVP.

Anyone who cares to can go to EVE-Onlins site and have a look at the screenshots to see its not 2d, and if you ever played it you know its not 2d.

I play my sub as more than 50,000 others do because its a great game that is continualy improving in software, content and the actual hardware with a great effort from Devs who own the game and need to eat and stuff ::::35::

Another great reason to have pay to play game is to keep immature 13yr old know it dorks out of the game ::::20:: dont like it dont play but dont post a load of **** OOOOOOOOOOOOK?

I really hope shiva will vastly improve the gameplay of the game. I played for 6 months and did everything from mining to taking part in the alliance wars (Curse Alliance was a very very impressively organised alliance btw :D ). I never feel I got fulfillment from the game, and decided to quit as it seemed to take my time and money.

I really want to like this game, and will be returning when Shiva does actually come out. Good luck EVE :)

I honestly don't think you have ever played EVE.  Tiny? 2D? No navigation tools?  Are you insane?  I'm not even a regular EVE player and I've seen all this and more in my limited exposure.

Either you are thinking of another game or you are completely uninformed.
