Well, I hope the corporations wake up soon with games like WAR and AoC not doing well because of playerbase being tired of WoW-clones

aoc is exactly wow clone, as it was first intended as pve game, and later switched to pvp.. due fans requests ( wow is pve game.. well there is loads of pvp now, but it was released as pve , and for that switch aoc turned out with half arsed pvp and half arsed pve )

war on other hand was pure wow clone

so was lotro.. but lotro is doing alright tbh so i dont see it as failure.. clearly not  a cash cow.. but content is going.. game is going.. and if you can pay salary for everyone involved.. thats success in my eyes..

im afraid that warhammer 40k.. which still pretty much unknown , as its aimed towards 2010-2011 release, aiming to be next wow ( atleast it was 2 years ago when they announced it.. they came with something as  'we got plenty of time.. to prepare our game.. we arent in a rush.. and by that time we are ready wow will be fallen from number 1 ) in that context .. so yeh.. wow doesnt seem to be falling.. and after warhammer failure.. i hope warhammer 40k, wont be aimed to mainstream that much to be failure.. as others before it

I still disagree with the general concensus that lotro is in any way related to WoW outside of the fact that they're both PvE based and are both MMOs. The community, lore, playstyle, social elements, features, and overall experience are worlds apart, and this is precisely why it's doing as well as it is right now

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

I think most of you are too centered on WOW as the be all and end all of the MMO world. For most WOW players I know play the game for the reasone stated before, smooth gameplay, consistent story, and well polish. I will admit that even though I continue to play WOW it does not mean I am blind to what else is is out there in terms of MMO's in general. I have tried LOTR, WAR, EVE and others but I stick with WOW because for me its a better game overall.

I use the WOW comparison because right now they are the gold standard of the MMO world. Say what you will about how the graphics are behind the times, or how they copy other games ideas. Thats what good developers do. You dont here the RTS or FPS crowd complain when a mulitplayer mode that proved popular/inovative in one game is copied to others, but somewhere along the way many in the MMO world started creating sacred cows out of certain game play aspects, and if  you use something from elseware then oh this is a WOW clone or this too much like EQ, blah, blah, blah.

For me I look for good games, and if a MMO comes around that is more fun and inovative and polished than WOW then I will play it. If people keep looking a game that like WOW but better it will never happen. If the new Star Trek MMO in development tried to be like WOW but better it would probably suck. One problem is that the money behind the developers see WOW's success and think, yea lets get some of that, and try to spend as little money as possible, but with a hype machine behind it to sell lots of box's, and mabey some reviews that are bought and paid for to lure in the suckers.

Eventually an MMO will come around and enjoy the success of WOW, perhaps better and the naysayers, fanboys and chronic complainers will bitch and complain about it, if for no other reason than its popular.

Actually, most upcomming MMOs now seems far away from Wow. You will have games like "World of darkness online", Guildwars 2, TOR, MO and many more.

It wont break totaly until another big game is out there of course, then they will start to copy it instead.

I'm wishing for something that's like Ultima Online but with WoW interface, graphics and user friendliness. Basically to sum it up it's a sandbox MMO but with upgraded modern graphics (i hate playing ugly games) and without the massive asian style level/XP grinding. And lots and lots of quest, boy I love quest.

How about just like wow in a differnet setting? That will work wonders. There is NO wow-style MMORPGs with a sci-fi theme yet.

EQ2 came out before WoW, Lotro is nothing like WoW, WAR is DAoC lite, Vanguard is trying to be a Eq1 type of game.
I don't see these wow clones anywhere.
If anything WoW is the clone.
WoW is a Lite version of EQ thats added features of rival games for the passed four years.
WoW added in instanced pvp due to rival games having it, Added in arenas as a direct slap in the face to guild wars, Wintergrasp and city sieges taken from WAR and Achievements to battle the Lorebook from Lotro and ToK from WAR.
Every time blizzard sees a cool feature in a up and coming MMO they scramble and add it to their game before the new game releases.
Seems like the only clone is wow tbh.

QFT with the small exception of replacing WoW with Blizzard in terms of strict theft.

Blizzard is the Microsoft of the Gaming world.

Their styles of thievery and amoral use of legalities are identical.

The first batch of devs to actually create a next gen MMO and bring us a new level of a persistant world, will be the devs to create a highly populated game.

Personally I am sick of WoW format cartoony anime mindless standard MMOs with different skins..

If I was a developer and I trawled through this board, I would be overcome by the overwhemling sense that every game present, past and future has been compared to WoW in one form or another, that leaves me with one possible solution to my new MMO, make a game like WoW for all these ppl.

Why make anything different? everyone and their donkeky constantly goes on and on and on about WoW, it seems the world revolves around that game, it's a success in it's own right and other games developers want to ensure their product captures the imagination of the customer, hence you see alot of dross hit the markets that bring nothing new other than a game title.

We are our own worst enemies, we complain when a games UI isn't as easy to access as WoW's, we whine when a games PvP isn't as fun as WoW's, we bitch that there isn't the end game challenges of WoW, as has been posted here ppl want WoW2, not a new game that will break the mould.

Developers will not break the tried and tested formulae that has brought WoW millions of customers, if they take the easy route they will probably find it easier to get investors, if they choose a harder route and take on an entirely different IP like for instance Darkfall your going to see ppl line up wanting it to fail (I use Darkfall purely as a non WoW example).

We drive the genre, the developers just give us what they think we want, and unfortunately atm everyone seems to want another WoW, what reason would the developers need to take a chance on something new, we don't want it, do we?
