I'm having problems accessing the launcher/updater. I've downloaded the client (weighs in around 9 gigs) but I cant see any exe? Also, clicking on the PlayNC Launcher gives me some kind of error which I obviously don't understand. I have the eastern asian language pack installed on Vista, so Im not sure what the issue is.
Edit - included image
That is the PNC launcher (a program that adds all you NCsoft games in one area). Not needed for Aion.
Open up the folder where the client downloaded and look for "setup launcher". un-pac the client into a different folder. then open the new folder and find the aion launch icon > copy to desktop.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
silent you have to log into the game through the korean aion site. sounds like you was in the same boat i was, took me awhile to figure it out. go there and you can tell where you need to log in at on the top left of the page then click the redish orange button, then once logged in click the big blue button.
if you download the test server client there is a .exe file in there not sure why its in there and not in the retail. just downloaded the test server client the otehr day just installed tonite its updating atm. figured i'd try the test server since from what i've seen most of the english speakers play on the test server for some reason. the test server will install in a different file too so you won't lose the retail install if you change your mind and rather play the retail version of the game.
Do you need to change any system settings to get the game to launch? I'm using Windows Vista and the retail client (on an active account) hangs at the ncsoft logo when I login. I have a powerful rig, so I not its not my specs that are the problem.
Might give the test client a go in a couple of days to see if it works.

Make sure your anti-virus, firewall is not causing the problem, the loading screens do take a while when you first start the client.

The test server gives you 7x more exp, so its faster to get to max lvl. And crafting / gathering is faster also.

Well its weird cause the first time I logged in the game played fine. The second time I attempted, the game hung at the logo with the usual blurb 'the program is not responding" Vista gives you.
So then I decided I was gonna re-download the client from a different link on the main site, and install on a fresh windows vista installation (hadn't done one in ages) and try again. This computer had no anti-virus app at the time, and like before the game ran perfectly after my initial setup / login. But each attempt after leaves me at the same damn logo screen >.<
It doesn't make any sense to me and I dont know of anyone else who has the problem. ^^

I've tried that... I will get back to the same page everytime i enter the username/password. Strange thing is that, I'm sure it's the correct username/password as if I enter a different password, it will take me to a white page instead of throwing me back to the same page...
That's the problem i'm having now, anyone had the same issue before?

Just give it some time to load. I get the "program not responding" thing every time I start the game and I just leave it alone, it loads up eventually.
So it is all great you are playing the Korean retail version but by all means please tell us what are the pros and cons of the game. Is it the same run of the mill mmo with nicer graphics and angel wings ?
So it is all great you are playing the Korean retail version but by all means please tell us what are the pros and cons of the game. Is it the same run of the mill mmo with nicer graphics and angel wings ?
Well for me, here's my list of pros and cons:
Pros:
Character Creation:
The character creation is great. They give you enough options with sliders to make dwarves, gnomes, halflings, elves, humans, giants and other abominations. Sure some people make silly looking characters, but at the same time it's refreshing to not see clones running around, everyone looks different. First game since City of X that I feel like I'm actually unique looking. I wish there were a few more voices to choose from, the ones they have fit for whatever size you make your character.
Visuals & Animations:
It's a very beautiful game. The character models and armor are amazling. The mobs are really impressive looking with some original designs. There are some really great uses of light and glowing effects. Spells and attacks look great and the animations are very nice, especially some of the combos. Some really fun emotes as well.
Little touches like when you're standing in a beach looking area, your character will randomly reach down and grab a handful of sand and play with it, then dust himself off, or when you're in a desert area you'll start fanning yourself to try to cool off. There are some nice cutscenes with your character that are enjoyable to watch. Just the fresh design of the game makes it feel like you're playing in a new world, not your standard swords and goblins fantasy world.
Sound:
The music is great. I love booting up the game listening to the girls singing. Reminds me of the intro to the Ghost in the Shell movie. The music changes from pounding tribal sounding stuff to beautifuly soft and anywhere in between. Your character will say something for every attack, and while I'm sure it gets annoying for some people hearing your character say the same line over and over if you spam the same skills, I kinda like that my Spiritmaster has a little incantation that he says for each spell. You can turn it off if you don't like it.
Combat:
So far I really like the combat. It's fast and can get a little crazy depending on your class . The combat has a nice flow. You can go through quite a few fights before you have to rest. Flight combat is pretty wild at times. I've not ventured much into the PvP yet, but the few fights I've been in were pretty fun.
Flight:
I love flying around, jumping off cliffs and gliding. It's fun and combat while flying is pretty fun. It feels really good, like the first time you got your flying mount in WoW or your flight powers in CoX. It's alot of fun and you just never get sick of it.
Cons:
Environment Textures:
This is really the main complaint I have with the game. The environment textures are bad, not average, but just bad, well in alot of places anyhow. I understand that the game has alot of resources being spent on the character models so they had to cut down somewhere to allow it to run decent on people's computers, but the environment textures took a huge hit. From a distance they can look just fine and you don't notice, but when you get closer, the colors are bleeding into each other, it's blurry and just poor, perhaps there's an option for installing high res environment textures, but if there is I couldn't find it anywhere. The general layout and look of the zones have really great design and look great, it's just the textures are a let down.
Zones:
I guess this could be a con, depending on what you want in your game. I don't mind zoning and I don't mind zones. Those who didn't like AoC or WAR zones, most likely won't like Aion's zones. At the beginning they're very linear. You follow a path and do quests hopping from hub to hub.
From 1-10 you're in a decent sized zone doing quests, you don't really have to wander far off the road. 10-20 you basically walk down a path that circles around the whole zone doing quests, again staying pretty close to the roads if you want. Granted it's alot of walking and is a pretty decent size, you're guided where to go for the most part leaving very little sense of exploration. Though when you get to a new area in the zone, it usually has a very different feel and graphic style. It ranges from beautiful colored beaches, dry red deserts, foggy wet swamps and winding mountain cliffs all in the the same zone. It does open up in the 20s and you have a few zones you can head off to explore and the maps are much more open and less restricting, but early on, you will feel very confined.
Flight:
They don't let you fly anywhere you want and you're limited to how long you can stay in the air. I'd love to truely feel like I could fly anywhere I wanted anytime I wanted. Not a huge con, but I love flying around so I would have liked more.
Not In The US Yet!:
I sure wish it was out here so I could buy a few copies and start playing for real! I love the Korean game, but I'd like to read what I'm supposed to do in some of these quests heh. Most of the quests I can do are just kill quests, but alot I cant' do because I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing.
So those are my pros and cons. I'll definitely buy the game when it's released in the US because I really do enjoy it. It feels like a mix between WoW, FFXI, L2 and Phantasy Star Online. If you're looking for something new in terms of gameplay and an experience that feels completely new, you'll probably be disapointed. If you want a fresh coat of paint with the standard gameplay in most MMOS, with a few new ideas tossed in, a colorful and unique looking world, great character customization, crazy looking gear, the ability to spread your wings and fly (and fight), then keep it on your radar.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions. I'll help answer anything I can.

Thanks for some feedback. I guess from what your saying it sounds like your very typical mmo other than the flying aspect. We'll see how it goes if I decide to buy Aion or not. Thanks again!

Thats what I thought first, too. But I've left it at the logo screen for upwards to an hour before and nothing changes. Its probably a really small dumb issue, but I can't figure it out. >.<
Well, the thing about AION KR is that the game is launched via the website, instead of a local .exe.
You login through internet explorer (their active-x applets don't work in Firefox), click on the login button which activates an add-on called PlayNC Launcher. Its through this you are able to patch up and enter the game. I don't think its possible to give the launcher administrative rights because of this. I've also tried launching the game after a reboot with no luck.
Why I'm able to enter the game right after a clean install of the client and not thereafter, I'm not sure. I don't know too much about computers. ^^
About the applocale thing, I don't know.. the client and launcher always installs like this on my computer:
/C/NCSoft/PlayNC Launcher ---> PlayNC Launcher
/C/Program Files/NCSoft/AION_KR ---> Aion client
I would've thought they'd need to be installed in the same directory, but Im not sure. I guess it wasn't meant to be ^^
This is how mine is set up : D:Program FilesPlayNCAION_KOR_TEST
Open up the" AION_KOR_TEST" folder and the aion launch icon is inside of it. I click on that and the game launches. I don't need to go to the web site in order to launch the game. It's also the same for the reg "AION_KOR" client.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Well the client I d/ld at the weekend contains no .exe launcher. Regarding the retail servers...as far as I am aware, there is no way I can launch the game locally with the client I have from the official site.
I'm sure the test client is different though.
Update - turns out that it was audio driver conflict that was preventing Aion and other games on my pc from launching (black screen). I had inadvertantly let windows update download a driver which had caused the conflict. A simple rollback has fixed the problem.
edit: and also, I learned the hard way that GameGuard does not work with Windows 7. So if you have W7, you're SOL <snip>
Just a few questions, because this puzzled me and I am curious to know.
1. Will the NA/EU version have Gameguard also?
2. So far I have mostly seen very good reaction to windows 7, so there is a good chance/risk many gamers will convert to that. If Aion uses Gameguard, which does not work with W7, could this be a potential problem for Aion? Or do you think Gameguard will have made their program work with W7 by the time Aion reached NA/EU?

Because W7 is still beta, It does not suprise me that GG does not work with it. I'm sure it will in the future ( I for one will be switching to 7 when its released).

So I'm one of those people who just couldnt wait and started playing the Korean Retail. Despite the fact that I cant read Korean, and youve heard this before, this game is a-mazing!! Theres plenty of guides online to help figure things out, quests are easy to figure out since they tell you exactly where to go, and the graphics are gorgeous. Its actually surprising how manageable the game is even in another language.. Best advice i could give to those who are frustrated they have to wait - don't wait. Go google "buy korea aion". Just fork out the money, spend the couple days downloading/updating the client. Go to mmosite.com's forums for some guides on how to read the screen. It's worth it. I will say this for those who are resolute in waiting - they patch this game A LOOOOT. Seems like everyday I go to log-in and I have to wait 15-30 minutes for a patch to download, so by the time it hits the Western Hemisphere, it should be pretty polished. Also if you're a non-Korean playing the Korean retail like myself, shoot me a PM and we can meet up.
edit: and also, I learned the hard way that GameGuard does not work with Windows 7. So if you have W7, you're SOL
double edit: heres a link to those guides. For those of you who are teetering on the edge of whether or not to pull the trigger, this should be a push in the right direction http://forum.mmosite.com/list.php?id=244&sid=245&cid=1
This is awesome. I was considering googling it to see if it was possible, but for some reason just figured they would ban/block all non-US IPs..and don't know if it's even possible to proxy a game server.

Thanks for some feedback. I guess from what your saying it sounds like your very typical mmo other than the flying aspect. We'll see how it goes if I decide to buy Aion or not. Thanks again!
Just give it some time to load. I get the "program not responding" thing every time I start the game and I just leave it alone, it loads up eventually.
Thats what I thought first, too. But I've left it at the logo screen for upwards to an hour before and nothing changes. Its probably a really small dumb issue, but I can't figure it out. >.<
Lowdos, did you check to make sure the process wasn't already running before trying to execute it again?
What about making sure to run it with Administrative Prilvages and in a different compatability mode?
I've never played it, but I know a thing or two about how windows works. I don't suppose it needs a force install of applocale?

/C/NCSoft/PlayNC Launcher ---> PlayNC Launcher
/C/Program Files/NCSoft/AION_KR ---> Aion client

NeoDrakeskin thanks so much for your input! Lots of nice things in there to look forwards to.
(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
Well the client I d/ld at the weekend contains no .exe launcher. Regarding the retail servers...as far as I am aware, there is no way I can launch the game locally with the client I have from the official site.
I'm sure the test client is different though.
Update - turns out that it was audio driver conflict that was preventing Aion and other games on my pc from launching (black screen). I had inadvertantly let windows update download a driver which had caused the conflict. A simple rollback has fixed the problem.
Thanks.

Because W7 is still beta, It does not suprise me that GG does not work with it. I'm sure it will in the future ( I for one will be switching to 7 when its released).

This is awesome. I was considering googling it to see if it was possible, but for some reason just figured they would ban/block all non-US IPs..and don't know if it's even possible to proxy a game server.
I'll hit you up with a PM if I decide to dive in.
