Ultima Online, was nothing like the thrill of leaving the 'safety' of town. Loved sitting at the bank day one ganking and banking everyones starting cash then dieing to the guards. Had tons of cash.
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
SWG, played for a year, now hate it due to lack of content, moved on to FFXI, now hate it due to over grindage to see the INCREDIBLE amount of content, now playing EQ2...so far just ok. Graphics are awesome, very laggy in cities, content(if you can call it that, doesn't seem very epic yet) otherwise ok for now. Looking forward to Middle Earth Online and D&D online.

Ultima Online.. and even it has old 2D graphics.. i still kinda love this game.. If you choose a friendly shard that suits your playing style, its really wonderful !
Anarchy online.I was completly addicted to it EVERY spare moment was spent playing that game.My wife hated that game. Now a few years later i can no longer afford the time so i play EVEonline. The main reason for this is because of the offline skill training. Its the best idea ever ya know.

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Mine first was AC2 up to lvl 47 was already boring to get there after the epic questcycle from the newbiestart was over and the levelgrind began.
Then spend 6 months in SWG, best experience up to now. Then left because most friends left as well and returned to AC2 (this time with hero system) this time leveled one to lvl 51, with the boring levelgrind.
Then went to EvE, quited after 2 months. No content at all.
Tried the 14 days trial on Anarchy Online, to end to a none subscription.
And now waiting for WoW in Europe.

My first was Redmoon Online in the U.S. (Diosa server). Had a lot of fun, but had to quit after a year or so. When I tried to return to it I find it's dead!
We are the Pagan Gods. Sure, Yahve beat the crap out of us, but we got the Internet licked.

I wouldnt say that UO is the first. Of the modern MMORPGs I think Meridian 59 would be the first as it came out in 1996. This is if you dont take MUD into consideration. If you did then you have to go back to around 1978 or so. They were Massive, Multiplayer, Online, had more RP than you could shake a +2 pointy stick at, and of course they were a Game. This is just my opinion.

The first MMORPG I played was Ultima Online. This is the only MMORPG I realy had fun!!!
The venerable EQ.
But before that - Active Worlds in 96. But it wasn't really a game, more of a world. A sort of MMEOW you might say.
*(Massive Multiperson Environment Online World)
Earth and beyond was my first.
EVE my second.
World of Warcraft will be my third.
Everquest
Shadowbane
EVE
Everquest II
*I'm excluding all the betas I've played in*

Earth & Beyond was my first. I was very consumed by the game. Too bad it went sunset.

First true MMORPG was Ultima Online in late 98.
