Those are solid strategies for all ranged attackers in most MMO games. Never let a melee player get close or basically your dead. In saying that though, it has been posted several times that Casters have an advantage atm, im sure they'll attempt a bit more balancing. Lets hope they get it pretty reasonable. Blizzard has often been accused of favouring magic users ive read, dunno how much truth in that there is.

I understand what your saying, but generally a melee type of character should have some means of breaking these, as it is now unless you play a gnome a melee can remain totally helpless and unable to do nothing, thats just not balanced. For starters I don't think any of the crowd control should be a definte affect, meaning there needs to be a chance of failing ( More so PvP, honestly don't care about its affects on PvE tehehe).

Worlds of Warcraft had me at Hello.

Began with Stress-Test 1. Loved it since. Immersiveness, awesome attention to details, colorful and believeable characters. I'm there.

BTW, if you are Alliance, head over to Iron Forge and pick up a mission from SteelGrill (sp?) near the noobie area called "Ammo Delivery" or something. Finish the quest and watch the little play that follows from the NPC's. FRIKKIN FUNNY!! image

I never have been a huge fan of the Warcraft world, but have played it before. When Blizzard announced WOW, and as I first saw it developing I knew I would stay away.

Then I played it. Yea there is nothing totally new in it. But it is kind of like comparing a old Model A car to a Lexius. Nothing new really with the Lexius, but it sure does drive a lot nicer then the Model A. Blizzard has taken gaming elements that appeal to a majority of gamers and put them in WOW. I believe that is what they were trying to do, not trying to be out on the cutting edge of some new idea that has not been tested or proven.

No the game will not be for everyone. But it is going to be huge.

This is a really fun game. It's fast paced, with little or no downtime. You can solo if you feel like it and group up if you want. I give it a 10. I had a lot of fun in the little time I had to play in the OB. The world has a nice atmosphere to it, and each area is detailed and colorful. The character models are a little dated looking, but with the world looking as nice as it does, I found myself looking at the trees and flowers and the sky. Heh, I hardly looked at my toon. The music is awesome and so are all of the sound effects. The UI is very nice and easy to figure out. The quest system is great too, I liked how it sent you adventuring into the world to complete more and more quests. A lot of people say the "!" above NPCs is silly, but I found it quite nice, since I didn't have to run around for 30 minutes looking for a NPC with a quest for me or to finish a quest.
The first time I visited the Undercity, I was like " whoah!". This game is a must buy. I am not too much into PvP, but who knows, this game may change my mind. Congrats Blizzard, on a job well done. ::::02::

For me this game is definately on my will play list.

Questing makes sense.  There are stories behind it.  Items that are useful (in most cases) or money rewards that come in handy.  Good exp for the quests and not a grind sitting in one place and killing for 6+ hours to get an item I need.

PvP is fun as it is, but I'm looking forward to the new system.  I don't knwo the details so I really cannot comment on it right now.

Instance areas are awesome.  No competing with the uber guilds to get a quest done or quest items.  Lots of fun and good exp to be had.

Grapics while not as realistic as other games are still high quality.  The landscapes are great, the buildings and details in town are fantastic.  Iron Forge is very cool fromt eh back of a griffon.

I went into this game during the first stress test with a positive feeling and I left the Open Beta on an even more positive note. I absolutely love this game and can not wait until the 23rd to continue playing. image

I can honestly say that I had no problems whatsoever during either phase of beta with children acting up in the game. Granted, there were a few people in general that were obnoxious at times, but it was rare and when it happens to the point that it is unbearable, you can just as easily /leave 1 (which is general 1). I really hope that people do not stay away from such a great game because they are afraid of what the community is all about. I have personally met up with a lot of great people in the game, I just wish other people will give this aspect an equal chance.

My opinion this is the best MMORPG made to date. I couldn't be more satisfied.image

I played both stress tests and the open beta.  Actually, I didn't play in the last week of open beta because I didn't want to bother losing my toons for release.  The game is fun, I'll give it that, but I was a bit saddened that it offers nothing new at all!  Maybe it's because I did not play long enough, but up to what I played (level 13 or something) and attempting multiple caracters, I basically get quests, do them, get new gear, rinse and repeat.  I was kind of hoping that it would be something revolutionary and not just another of the same type of MMORPG that is released now.  I realize how hard it is to make anything new, but I felt that I was getting bored too quickly and easily to buy the game.  Personnally, I would have liked to see the game with no level limit and instances based on the average level of the group.  The way it is now, the game is too easy to template so that in a guild everyone of the same class might be following 2-3 different templates for their toon with all the same equipment.

Ps- I play Everquest 2 now image and it's pretty much in the same boat as WoW less the PvP and with a few different aspects, but nothing really new there as well so I guess we can't expect this latest generation of MMORPG's to produce the revolutionnary titles we expected.

Edited: For my rating, Wow deserves no less than 8 out of 10.  I loved the graphics, the game is fun, the sound is good, it performs extremely well on lower end pc.  My 3 beefs are that crafting is way too easy and the community is not the best (Diablo 2 kiddies whining and bitching at everything) and there is no roleplay.  I am hoping that release will fix the last 2 of those.

As I see things now strictly melee type characters such as warriors are extremely hampered in PvP due to crowd control such as fear, sleep, stuns and roots. To me the set up is mindless and unskilled PvP.

Dunno if you played a warrior at all, but by level 37 I had 2 warrior skills that made me immune to fear. It's only mindless and unskilled, if the person playing is. If you play an undead warrior, you get 3 things that can make you immune to fear.

Iwas pleasently surprised that having been a beta tester for EQ2 and WoW, that Blizzard has done everything a little bit better than any other fantasy mmorpg on the market.. .so even a little bit better is a better investment for my dollar for a very good return on the replayability and fun.

=Graphics – WoW because the graphics are clean, simple, not overly complex, they render wonderfully and don’t require a huge investment in processing or memory which allows for smoother game-play. Anyone choosing very high-end graphics is making the wrong decisions about why one game should be preferred over another. I think that 70% of the EQII community will not be able to take advantage of anything more than the lowest graphics setting, and at that level the graphics detail are not pleasant at all…very grainy and unpolished – not to mention that the claymation style graphics don’t appeal to me.

=Immersion – WoW because the storyline and quests lead to rewarding outcomes and can be intertwined with other stories and quests. In addition, PvP has purpose and the game-play is designed with PvE and PvP in mind, though it should carry more weight in terms of forcing people into player interactivity, but the direction is great. EQ have never been design with breadth and depth of balanced PvE and anything relating to meaningful role or game-play immersive PvP. EQ1 and 2 are just not, absolutely not PvP friendly games. . .it is an abysmal afterthought with EQ1 and EQ2. The WoW PvP incorporation enhances the short-term and long-term game experience. . .it adds a great sense of suspense and unexpectedness that is dynamic, rather than linear as you’ll find with the EQ PvE model of game-play. I don’t think there is an end-game with WoW, it is “open-ended” which means there is more to do and accomplish as you progress through the story, quests, etc.

=Quests – WoW allows for quest accomplishment with a nice blend of difficulty, ease of use, types, reward, adventuring, exploration and game-play immersion and story telling. Both games will have many npc’s that when engaged provide different quests, but seems like WoW makes the process less labor and downtime intensive minimizing the amount of time spent in-game searching over a very long period of time for a particular npc, site, location, etc. WoW is more questing friendly, not too simple by any means, just less labor intensive and a better use of my game-play with less aimlessly running around time. EQII gives the impression and I’d be concerned that it would be a much more laborious and confusing questing system with little to no descriptiveness of how you should accomplish your task, where the task needs to be accomplished, leading to too much wasted in-game time yelling for help and traveling in a completely different direction than that which should be taken. Though If your interested in quantity over quality, then EQII may be the choice. But WoW seems to have the better balance of quantity and quality.

=Environment – WoW seems to be a much less crowded and adventuring friendly environment that invites players to explore without feeling like a rat caught in a maze. EQII seems to be very claustrophobic. . .the cities, and wilderness environments seem very confining and because of that, not very fun to get around in or explore.

=General game-play: WoW has great game-play range for both harder-core and casual players. WoW seems like down-time between encounters is minimized by not having to spend a quarter of your game-play time resting to regenerate stamina or mana or fear of getting continuously pinned in by non-escapable gauntlet of mobs. The WoW adventuring fear factor is there, but it is manageable. With EQII, I have gotten the impression that you’d need an army of players to help keep you safe from the mobs in order to make it to the simplest destination safely.

With WoW, seems like though all mmorpgs have a healthy degree of mob bashing in order to advance, the WoW game-play environment and style of game-play will probably take much more of the sting out of the tread-millish feeling with their perceived more friendly questing system and less down-time game-play style. If you want to stick with the tedious game-play that EQ is known for, then WoW is not for you.

Recovering after getting killed by a mob or another player is very friendly. .you port to a grave-yard and have the option of ressing on the spot for a minor experience hit (which can be gotten back) or running for your corpse without a minor experience hit. . .in both situations, gear is not lost. That fact contributes greatly to the replayability of WoW.

When first announced I passed it over, didn't even care to sign up for Closed Beta, you see I'm not a RTS fan and since Warcraft was an RTS title I was turned off of World of Warcraft.  Then came the first stress test, figured since it was free I would give it a shot, I enjoyed it but quickly became board by the end of the 10 days, then two weeks went by and I found myself missing World of Warcraft so when the game went into second stress I soaked up the fee and joined Fileplanet to get into it....I played everyday of the Stess Test and Open Beta for 12+ hours a day, I did not get board and now that theOB is over I sit here wiating for the phone to ring and it be Electronics Boutique to tell me my Collector's Edition World of Warcraft has arrived.  Personaly I did not like some of the changes at the end, like Paladins, but it was a playstyle choice, I didn;t like their new style so I made other characters, and all this ranting about the durability and death system is a joke, I never once had it effect me greatly and honestly I still use death as a tactic, just now instead of wondeirng if the XP is worth the reward I wonder if the repair cost is worth the reward (like when I sucicided my Warlock in order to exacute my plan to get the Succubus pet).

Paraphrased: I was not interested in it at first, but I am glad I gave it a shot, it is hands down one of the best MMORPGs to date.

Those who say that the game offers nothing new at all well all i say to that is playing through the old Warcraft games i always hoped that one day there could be a nice 3D warcraft game and BAM!!! WoW came...

So to me playing a MMO in a Warcraft setting is plenty enough for the 'whats new' factor to be satisfied.

I've been playing Blizzard games for as long as I can remember, I was a little concerned that Blizzard would make all the same mistakes as every other company in the Online market has made, they haven't, I purchased EQ2 and regret it, I will purchase WoW and after my experience in Stress Test and Open Beta I know I am going to love it.

Kudos to Blizzard for delivering what all the other online game makers could not, a game that is FUN to play.

I only have limited experience in the MMORPG world but i know what works for me.

If a game manages to keep me entertained and immersed in it's world & storyline without making me worry about a grind, i'm sold. For me, WoW managed to do just that. I'd be running along doing some quests/tasks, be it for a few measly silver, or a valuable item, at the end i would realize 'Well, what do you know, i just gained another level.'

It just seems like the levels come naturally. The game is goal oriented with so many quests. At least to me, it was more important to complete the quests than to level, especially as the character grows because many of the quests require more thought. For example the goal of one quest was to find 2 pieces of treasure that were in sunken boats. The boats were surrounded by mobs. But if you examine the boats well enough, you could reasonably guess the best way to enter the boats without attracting attention (swim through a submerged open window).

I didn't have as much fun in the first ST. But got hooked on the 2nd ST and OB and expect to have my CE on Tuesday. I've never had as much fun in an MMORPG as I've had in WoW.

  • KelsonmacKelsonmac Member Posts: 313

First I would like to say that I never played any of the previous Warcraft games. Secondly, I would like to add that I purposely do not read message boards for games I have never played. I knew about Wow from game previews and also from talking to trusted friends who were eager to give it a try.

I played in both stress tests and in the open beta. I would like to say right off that I found that the stability of this game was tremendous for me. I expect that WoW will have a very clean launch. I'd also like to commend Blizzard for giving the general public a chance to participate in the stress tests and open beta . . something SOE did not do with EQ2.

Sadly, I think WoW is a very halfhearted attempt at a MMORPG. I found the game to be painfully boring and cosmetically unattractive. I am not saying that I disliked every aspect of the game . . . there are parts that I found to be terrific . . but overall I just did not have any fun with WoW, no matter how hard I tried.

However. the important thing is not whether I liked it, but whether YOU like it. If YOU have fun and think WoW is the greatest MMORPG of all time, then I am genuine in my happiness for you. It's a game and if it is fun for you, that is what it is all about.

Actually the more conflict and verbal battling i see between EQ2 fanboi's and WoW fanboi's, the more i wanna try EQ2 now :) Not because theyve proven a point, but because where there IS smoke there IS fire. Certainly the graphics look appealing, unfortunately i aint gonna shell out for both, so atm ill be sticking to WoW

Im sure there both top games, like just about everything in life, its a matter of taste and perception.
