How did Turbine beat Valve?

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tournament/region/north

I know probably all the Turbine fanbois got directed here cause this happens all the time with voting stuff but this is just stupid..............

Turbine the company that brought you:

- Asheron's Call the mmorpg that lived in Everquests shadow.

- Asheron's Call 2 the failure of an mmorpg that got shut down

- Dungeons & Dragons Online another failure of an mmorpg noone cares about

- Lord of The Rings Online had a terrible launch and still to this day isn't popular, has terrible combat and character models. The mmorpg that should have been massive coming off the Lord of the rings movies but Turbine again gave us a lackluster mmorpg on a massive franchise.

Against Valve:

- Half-Life

- Counter-Strike

- Half-Life 2

- Day of Defeat

- Episode One

- Episode Two

- TFC

- TF2

- Portal

- Left 4 Dead

- Steam

They revolutionized the FPS genre and all Turbine did was create 4 shit mmorpgs.

I lol'd at this.. Obviously your not a MMORPGer, now leave the MMORPG.COm and don't come back.  Every company has different way of making the game.  That means Blizzard is in same shoe as Turbine? This topic is pointless and very stupid to discuss about.  Its all about your opinion.

As in politics, the winner of a vote is not always the most deserving candidate but the one who can muster the most supporters to actually vote. Turbine was urging everyone on the log-in screen to vote for them, and obviously fans of the game listened. Doubtful Valve has that kind of concentrated access to their fans.

Answer is easy, more people like turbines mmos then the fps games produced by Valve.

Edit: even thou the fps produced by Valve is great, played loads and loads of CS my self back in the days but grew tierd of it.

IMHO LOTRO had the smoothest launch ive seen in a long time.   I played from beta up untill 6 months after and had to quit, which sucks cuz I liked the game.   Not sure why you think it was such a bad launch cuz I never found anything wrong with the game.

DDO was a good game too, I enjoyed playing it but people just wanted to run the same dungeons  over and over again and it totally killed the DnD feel for me.

Never playe any of the AC games so i cant say anything about that.

Well as for me Im not to much of a FPS fan so I like Turbine better than Valve anyday.

Can't agree with OP's opinion of Turbine and LoTRO, it did get me thinking, what might an MMORPG done by Valve be like?

The half life world just might make for an interesting game.

But I think as to why Turbine beat Valve?  MMO's are persistant, so are their fans, so they are watching for polls to vote in and support their game.  MMO players feel they are part of  the "team" so to speak.

As opposed to Valve games which are great single player experiences, but most folks put them down and move on to a new game.   There's not sense of belonging to a team in this situation hence the lower impulse to vote.

    Just my opinion of course.

and who cares about most overhyped game ever like counter strike anyway -.-

whats the point of putting valve and turbine in the same place? going with this logic you can say valve is better than any mmo creating studio, cause they dont product games that often. seriously go troll somewhere else?

and a hint for op - is valve better than ccp? after all eve is game one of its kind and got plenty of awards. think before posting pointless topics...

Turbine beat Valve because it's an election, not a measurement of what development studio is the best.

I think it seems stupid to you because you didn't understand what you were voting for. It isn't a competition of the games but a competition of the developers. A lot of players of Turbine games know a dev or two on the team for the game they play and, as a result, know that they are some of the most kick-ass people in the industry to hang out with, talk shop with and party with.

Only a few thousand votes were cast so that explains it : I mean just look at game reviews and sales numbers and look at what Valve has done for the PC platform with Steam. It's obvious the fanbois came out for Turbine where as the Valve fans didn't care.

Turbine is a great company and Asheron's Call  is still my favorite MMO of all times.  They broke the mold and started a trend of monthly updates and new game content that no other company has done since.  Still to this day the game gets monthly updates and the story line moves along.

LOTRO was and is a smooth as hell game. I played beta like 4-6 months before release and I remeber thinking how great the game ran and played for being in beta.  The smoothest beta I have ever played.  The game is solid and if your into the whole WOW type of MMO it's a good game.

AC 2 was rushed by Microsoft and made way to simple for orginal AC follower to enjoy.  Once they got it to the point of being a good game it was too late.  I still think this is a huge partof way Turbine broke away from Microsoft.

DDO- I tried it but did not like the No PVP aspect of it. They might have changed this now because when I played it was early release or maybe even a late beta.

To some extent that is the thing. Many players who participated were thinking it's about the games.  But it's about the communities.

MMO's are very much about the communities and to a certain extent, communication with its developers. On the Turbine forums you get that "back and forth" with community managers and developers as well as game artists.

I love Valve games. And I voted for Bethesda because I like their development of games like Morrowind and Oblivion. but in the end, there is an active community that is conversing every day on the Turbine boards and therefore getting out the vote.

I'll put Valve above Turbine any day.

They used steam as an opportunity to do some pricing experimentation. In doing this they realized games are way too expensive, and that companies will be more profitable if games went for half the price the do now.

But this bracket left out Rockstar and Bioware. So, not cool.

I give rockstar big props for being the first company to give EA the finger and say frak your buyout.

I give Bioware mad props for being able to stick with a proven formula while simultaneously making big changes in each game.

This makes you look like you really don't know what you're talking about. LOTRO had a stellar launch, probably one of the smoothest in MMO history. It's very popular as well (not WoW popular, but who else is?) with servers in North America, Europe, and Asia.

As far as how they beat Valve, I'm guessing Valve hasn't been advertising "vote for us!" to their forum users like Turbine has.

Face it folks are gonna vote with thier feet, the expectation was that Valve would put out a "Great Product".

AC, LOTR, D&Do aren't first person shooters, but you've got to think about time line computing tech, and who had what and when.

    Valve had it first IMO.

This is correct, LOTRO had a very easy launch. Even people who didn't like the game had to give them that.

I don't know where he is getting that.

Comparing apples and oranges doesn't exactly hold much merit.  While I may agree that both DDO and AC2 were bad decisions, how can you honestly say that everything Turbine has produced is bad?  LOTRO is a really rich and indepth game for what it is, a themepark IP based PvE style game, and just because YOU didn't like it doesn't mean it's bad.  You should be slapped for even mentioning AC in that statement, even if it "was" in Everquest's shadow it was still the best game I've ever played.  Besides, I would much rather play something that is rich and unique as opposed to something mainstreamed and dumbed down.  Then again, you're more than likely one among the sheeple.

Bethesda lost to Turbine is that tournament.  Hmm, I doubt that would happen.  Bethesda is the only company besides Blizzard that consistenly puts out quality products that are finished and receive great reviews.  While I like Turbine a lot and think they are definitely one of the better MMORPG companies, they do not have the great track record that Bethesda has.
