Hey, Ive played countless MMOs, And ive found that crafting in an mmo is one of my favorate ways to play the game. Recently i havent found any new MMOs with crafting-sentric economics. So i ask for your assitence...
The MMO should have:
1. Extensive crafting resource gathering, No WOW crafting for me. Resource gathering in Darkfall takes time and quality resources are rare which means it is not simple as in WoW. 2. Preferably, The ability to effect the environment, Such as in Wurm Online. You can craft buildings and cities which impact the gameworld in Darkfall. 3. Magic, Yeah when im not crafting im flinging fireballs or cureing my Party members. Magic skills can be pursued and the high level skilled magic users are powerful. 4. Build anywhere, Even if its only in designated areas...(so you can build int his big empty space but not on top of the NPC town.) Darkfall meets this criteria for designated areas and many are hidden and need to be discovered. 5. Good Guild or grouping, Whats a crafter without Partners. Clans are a big part of Darkfall and grouping is encouraged by design because it's not a linear task experience driven game like WoW-EQ2-LoTRO-Vanguard etc. 6. 3D, Text is fun, but not what im looking for. It is 3D and good graphics.
So if you can think of MMOs that are close to this feel free to post maybe leave a link or small personal experence on it...
Darkfall is the only viable crafting MMOG currently.
There are MMOGs that used to be great for crafting before they were changed for the worse like classic EQ and SWG, and MMOGs that would be good choices if they had healthy playerbases like Istaria aka Horizons or Ryzom. As you already seem to understand, crafters need a healthy playerbase to trade their crafted goods otherwise what's the point in crafting. The demand for Darkfall currently exceeds their server capacity.
I am signed up for dark fall if they ever let me in ill be sure to test it throughly...
"If they had played the game, theyd probably be far more upset. Dragon Age also features digital prostitutes, lesbians, rather clean three way sex, inter-species erotica, war, decapitation, thinly veiled social commentary, alcohol, drug addiction, slavery, racism, sexism, sexual harassment, genocide, the death of children, demons, and more blood than a vampire drinking game." -Dana Massey
Yes i have played EVE, and what i find is im bored with the mine a rock use a factory kill some npcs , id like to get out of my ship when they release that feature (limited as it was implyed itd be) ill try eve again

My brother tells me Ryzom has a good crafting system. I think it's still free to play atm also.
EVE has a great market and everything is crafted by players on the market. It's also 1 server with many markets all over the universe so you can very much so make a complete living from the market. It's so extensive EVE has a real economist giving weekly reports. The market details even shows price progression. EVE also has loss in being destroyed, so the demand is always good.
Considering I never tried Ryzom myself, my vote goes to EVE for crafting/markets. No other MMO compairs to EVEs market

Be warned that if you're one of those people who decides on a game very quickly from first impressions, then you won't like A Tale in the Desert. It's different enough from anything you've played before that it will take you quite a while to figure out what you're doing. There are some tech roadblocks that are put there to force you to communicate with other players, though they're pretty trivial to get around if you ask for help.
Today crafting sucks. Tatoo this to your forehead, so when you brush your teeth you don't forget. I'd tell you to go play WoW, EQ2, WAR, AoC, all the big ones, and just try to find a good group of people. Tuck that crafting idea in your back pocket for another day, or when it comes back out of retirement. This is not Burger King, and you will not be getting it your way.
If you are focused on crafting, try removing your MMO requirement.
If you are focused on an MMO, you might have to PvP a little today because that's what sells.
WoW turned into ArenaGearCraft. There are addons that will help you level and avoid 90% of the game, until you can arena and get the awesome gear to kill anyone twenty times over, and then post on YouTube laughing at them because they actually know what is on the other maps, and if any of your rep bars are higher than neutral. Evil marketing won, bound, tied, and gagged the origional crew. It's over. Nothing to see here. Move along now.
Hey! Go check out the Fat Princess on YouTube! Brainless, crude, RTS PvP you can cross platform. This is the future.
Oh, and for super fast reviews of games you are thinking of trying, but to lazy to download the trial on, Google search for "Zero Punctuation". Hell-a-funny, and pretty accurate.
(After about 5 of these videos you don't have the tears to cry from laughing so hard and your stomach hurts too much, as well as your head from falling out of your chair ROFL, but the first few are pretty rough so mind the kids.)

Pre-CU SWG had the best crafting system ever made =/ ...not anymore though.
Eve has a great system too.
I Reject your Reality and Substitute it with My Own!
