Is this game going to die any time soon?

RecklanRecklan Member UncommonPosts: 31

Was just wondering. I was thinking about playing it but if it's dying then I'll just wait for something else.

I don't believe so.  I've actually noticed an increase in players on Brandywine.  It still has some life in it yet.

From the time an MMO is launched it begins to die due to broken promises and general player dissatisfaction, there might be sparks of revival in form of expansions and such, but those are usually temporary;  the real question is at what rate.

I was last ingame a month or so ago and it was healthy. I know a lot of the players I know are upset with the last patch, it won't spell doom for the title and I imagine the game won't be off the radar anytime soon.

They're making an effort to make the experience of newer players enjoyable, tho. Reworking some of the starter areas with smoother progression, the quest helper feature (ugh), and the experience increase.

ROFLMAO! I'm sorry, this is too funny. First, what made you think LOTRO was dying at all? Second, no way in hell is it dying right now after releasing an award winning expansion pack. The world Tolkien wrote about hasn't even begun to be fully fleshed out but with each expansion and content update this is taking place.

On a side note, while the game had a "quiet" start, the changes over the last 2 years and the incredible content updates from the developers makes this a game that will stand the test of mmo time, as it's predecessors have.

Next to WoW and Eve, I personally see no other mmos out there worth playing over this one.

    Ok, thanx for the replies

To answer your question:  not by a longshot.

To expand on some other comments:

    • The book 7 changes were pretty annoying to several (hunters and champions), but overall I believe most liked the changes.  The additional content in Loth Lorien is nice, and if they get some bugs worked out, I believe everything will be a success.
    • Depending on your playstyle, the game is very fun for anyone who enjoys quest based "treadmills."  I don't mean that negatively either.  LOTRO is the best quest based game out there IMO.
    • As far as I am concerned, there are only 3 games worth playing anymore:  LOTRO, EVE-O, and WoW.  Not because any one of them is particularly outstanding, it's just that those 3 put together the most complete packages for their target audiences.

I wish I could say there are better games out than LOTRO for the PvE audience, but honestly, there just isn't.  However, if PvE and questing isn't your MMO "cup of tea," then best to steer clear of LOTRO.

As much as the haters of this game might wish otherwise, and it has its obsessed detracters for sure, LoTRO is thriving.  Populations got a big boost from MoM.  I'm seeing more players in every level range than I ever have.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

I always find it funny when people ask these types of questions.  I mean come on UO and EQ are still alive. They just don't have all that many players.  Now TR that is what you call dead.

Is it as big as WOW. No, then agian i dont think and game has that kind of numbers. But this game will be here for years to come with lots of enjoyable mouments of play.

LotrO have had a healthy playerbase for 2 years now

They succesfull released their first expnasion which grew the population

The have right to the license foratlest another 5 year with option for another 3 after that.

One of the few  MMOs which havent had any server merges.

    So the answer is NO

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

It's not dying, but it's got one crowded server, two average populated servers, and about 10 that are underpopulated. It's pretty stagnant.

The only time there's actually every a lot of people in the game is on a free play weekend. On those, you actually have to wait in a line for a couple minutes on those 3 servers.

R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there

I've been playing for about 5 months, and the experiene just keeps getting better. The game is a PvE'r dream, and the world is amazing.  I've barely scratched the surface of what's already in the game!

I've been playing for about 3.5 months, and I rolled on Windfola, which I've since come to understand is one of those"underpopulated" and "stagnant" servers.

Don't believe it. I've never had a problem getting a group, or even just one other player to help me out when it was needed. Hell, I'll still often get blind invites on two of my characters. Glad to help out. Every weekend, in front of the Prancing Pony, there are several groups of musicians that play music for the assembled crowd.

LotRO is not a perfect game, to be sure, but it is one of the best PVE games out there at the moment.

I've been playing two months and I'm still surprised at the depth and polish this game has. Even the graphics are great for a two year old game,  just the other day I got to Forochel and the bleak wilderness with the aura flickering in the sky was beautiful!  There's too much to do for me so it better not die before I get my fill of it!

Game is not dying. While other MMO's have come and gone/crashed and burned (and in some cases, even died) LotrO has for it's first two years always managed to maintain a steady playing population on both sides of the pond (i.e US and EU), and after successfully launching it's first paid expansion, the game is now about to be introudced in the asian market (Korea and China if I'm not mistaken), so there is nothing to worry about :)

LoTRO is many, many things. Dying is definitely not one of them.

I found this nice little website that tells population of a lot of LOTRO servers a few days ago. I wish I had known about this before I joined the Brandywine server because it always seems to be a bit overloaded.

if lore/story/immersion are your things, then there is zero doubt you shd be playing lord of the rings online

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

LOTRO is far from perfect, but its as close to perfect as any mmo I have played. ;)

Good game, solid lore, fantastic worlds and it has its bugs but not making it unplayable.

If you want to know what the current trends are regarding this game, I would recommend taking a look at multiple websites, because the hype ratings on here are not always a reliable indicator.  That being said, based on my own research and experience in game, the hype rating for LoTRO seems about right.  By most indicators, the MoM expansion seems to have helped the game.  It's won a few awards, and the population is relatively healthy by most non-WoW standards.  There are some bugs to be worked out, but nothing that other games don't have from time to time.

Given how long most games last even after their prime (UO and EQ are still around), I'd say you have at least a few more years before you have anything to worry about with LoTRO.

Well said, and with a few exceptions pretty accurate.

I won't argue your preference but it is pretty hard to make the argument that LotRO is some raging success when the game has not added a single server since launch.  Yes, I bet it is financially succesful and subs are at a steady and healthy rate, but even with that award winning expansion you mention pops where not dented enough to add any servers so LotRO is much like what most games outside of WoW seem to be, stable and niche at best.

There are but a handful of MMO's that have actually been "Killed."

Even UO and EQ are still being played, which really suprises me honestly if I told myself 10 years ago that EQ and UO would still be played 10 years later I would have called myself a liar... if that makes any sense.

I really doubt they'll be closing down LOTRO, probably ever.

They'll find a way to keep it going.
