I'm a total melee guy. I almost never enjoy playing any ranged or support type characters. I play fighter/warrior types as a first choice, always. If the pure up-front melee combatant class(es) in the game aren't fun, or I've already played one to the hilt, then I go for the stealthy type as a second choice.

Crowd controllers which usually translate to caster types. I love the classes that lets you lock down between 5 to 10 mobs. Sadly this class is a dying breed. Crowd controlling is a nono from developers standpoints in todays group friendly games. People become too dependent on them.
Usually I start out by playing a sneaky role, like ranger or rogue. However recently I've noticed that I moreso enjoy playing a support role, like bard.
Either way, it needs to be something agile, I can't do any bulky thing
Tanks; I love to meet the enemy toe to toe, Paladins preferably, since I like the tank & emergency heal mix.
2nd fav is Rangers, but only when designed well and interesting. Tho Rangers tend to be too squishy once stuff gets close, which makes it usually tough to solo.
Loved the AoC Barbarian who just can run in and CHAAAARGE.
Totally find healers and mages boring. I really hate to take crowd controllers into my group. I want to BASH out all my flashy area attacks, swirl my two deadly axes and area nuke and not make it a puzzle figuring out who is mezzed and who isnt. If I wanna play chess I play... well chess.

I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
Melee for me, although I do play range here and there. I prefer the ability to use magic while using a 2H-sword, that's just me.
Normally the first thing I check - ability to weild a huge 2-handed sword (it has to be a 2h sword...)
Then I check whether I can use magic to heal (like Paladin), enhance attack/defense/buff myself and/or others, or defense (a bit like a some scrapper combo I can do in CoH).
But if I can swing that huge 2H sword, I'm content.
For me it depends on the game. I used to like melee classes but they always got old really quick. Now I prefer ranged classes.
In Phantasy Star Online I played a Ranger, I loved it from day one. Moderate damage, moderate defense, able to kill stuff from far away and able to actually use rifles, which owned in that game.
In WoW I played a warrior as my main but I got tired of it pretty quick. I tried out a shadow priest on a test realm and loved it. If I ever went back to wow I'd roll one in a heartbeat.
I haven't played a whole lot of other RPGs with classes, but I feel I'd most likely stick to classes that use bows/guns in the future.
My preference is for melee DPS and/or classes that can stealth.
I don't like tanking much; standing still while something hits me seems counter-intuitive.
I don't like playing healbots; I find spamhealing dull and hate having to stare at healthbars.
I don't like playing ranged DPS/casters; they tend to be monotonous and spammy.
Melee DPS has that element of unpredictability and just seems to be more involving .. dodging AOEs/cleaves, keeping safe while keeping up the damage. Just great fun in PVE and the stealth is fantastic fun in PVP and for exploring.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
Anything that lets me do much more than straight up damaging / healing / buffing / debuffing...
That would normally be mages & wizards, but sadly most casters have become a lot like archers now; making you just run around and pew pew. I love casting spells that really do feel magical. Also, I love being able to come up with creative uses of spells and abilities, so a narrowly defined role is not for me.
Healers are usually the best choice for me. I enjoy sitting back and healing, sometimes its a very difficult task when the fight gets rough it's a blast.
For me its been Mages I like to stand back and DPS the hell out of foe's but I'm also starting to get interested in trying out other classes in the future but it was at first a natural attraction to casters. Playing EQ2 the Bard classes look the most interesting at the moment so time will tell if I change tact on this.

It used to be dps (ranged-generally caster type) but after playing so many mmos and getting sick and tired of not being able to find a tank or healer it tends to be a tank or healer anymore.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

Tanking depends on the game. In games where it's just standing still letting things hit you, it's pretty sucky. But I enjoyed tanking in wow. It's VERY unpredictable (unless you're using a guide or something for a fight, but those don't cover things like overzealous hunters). It's a lot of work making sure a boss doesn't go around killing your party, you have to stay in control. As a tank you're looked to as a leader in the group (even if you're not the leader). Lots of responsibility. Tanking is pretty exciting. But, of course, tanks can't solo too well and sometimes you just need some uber lazor damage. Which is why my favorite role is archer/caster for general playing.
I switch between being Healer and a Tank. When I'm sick of dying quickly with the healer, I switch to the Tank role. And once I feel like keeping my comrades alive, I go back to Priest.

I usually play an Archer type (Forgot that one on your list didn't ya. ). If there are no Archer types then I usually will go for Stealth.

Ultimately it would be Thief (Rogue)
Class that specializes in stealth , scouting , group utility and target item retrieval
Enter , retrieve target and exit before anyone noticed it missing
Unfortunately only MMO that came close to this class was Shadowbane , and naturally DDO
Most perfect form of this class was visible in NWN multiplayer.
Groups would need you , but they could never fully trust you.
Otherwise i also like to play Utility classes , Controllers / illusionists and Jack of all Trades ...
melee healers
Paladin in WoW, Warrior Priest in WAR, Bear Shaman in Age of Conan.
I not squishy healers
