...do you plan on picking this game up right after release, or waiting until some reviews come in before making up your mind.

Even though this game seems to be coming along nicely, I still plan on waiting until some FAN reviews come out. I could care less about what gaming sites say because most of them gave WARHAMMER a great review and I didn't think that game was all that they made it out to be. So I plan on waiting until players from the official site and this one have their say before I make up my mind.

I'm probably going to preorder off gamestop or walmart website and have it shipped next day air.

A poll to ask if other people are planning on waiting to see what other people have to say before making a decision for yourself?

A bit redundant, don't you think?

  • BrenelaelBrenelael Member UncommonPosts: 3,821

Well it all depends really. If I can get into Beta and see the game for myself before release than I may preorder if I think it's any good or at least has potential. If not than I will probably wait to see some reviews by some trusted reviewers before I buy it. I picked "Wait and see" in your poll however as we all know that getting into any Beta is a crap shoot at best.

    Ordering Pre-Release.

I don't pkan on getting into beta. I do how ever like everything I have read so far, and even if I don't like it, I like having Star Trek Memorabilia and this will add to it.

I am very iffy on this game still, I am by no means a huge Star Trek fan, but I still enjoy watching TNG whenever I can.  In all my time spent watching Star Trek I never saw thousands of captains zooming about the federation and I feel to make everyone a captain of their own ship is beyond lame.  I wanted a true Star Trek experience with player crews and few but well known and deserved captains.  I want to play my character at all times and never play as a "ship".

So am I pre-ordering? no.  I may just pass on this what-so-ever for the mere fact they are using an old heroes engine to make the game and didn't bother creating a new engine the Star Trek IP deserves so that everything could be done correctly and not half-assed and quick to make a quick buck.

Sounds like a good topic for another poll!

Im the type of gamer that its absolutely required to be there at launch day. I feel like Im behind if I start a game later than launch. In fact I dont think Ive ever stuck with any MMO that I missed the launch of.

Launch day isnt even enough. I need to be there the second the servers get turned on. And because developers tend to offer early access for pre-orders, Im certainly going to pre-order any MMO Im going to play.

Its a risk yes. Ive got two shelves of game boxes gathering dust that were total junk.

There is just something magical about Launch day. Everyone is new, we're all lost. Some of my best MMO experiences occurred the first days of a game. Who can forget the first time they saw Stormwind or raided the Tusken fort !

So if you're like me and must be there for the very beginning of a game, below are some pointers...

I dont pre-order Collector's edition versions. For the most part its a waste of money. Im not going to listen to the music cd, hang the poster up, and whatever trinket they include just gathers dust. Give me a 2% bonus to XP ring or something truly useful and yeah I'll consider it.

Avoid pre-ordering from web sites. They dont ship the game till launch day which means you arent playing until 2-3 days after launch. Im talking about you Amazon.com

Dont pre-order from a store inside a Mall. There is no guarantee that the Mall will agree to opening their door for a midnight launch. In the past, Ive pre-ordered from a mall store that publicly announced a midnight launch only to get called 3 days before launch to tell me they just got notified they cant open at midnight. And this was a store that had several midnight launches over the years for various games and consoles.

If you cant get to a midnight launch line, your best bet is a place like Target (pre-order though). Target usually opens early because theyre also a grocery store. Mine here opens at 7am. Stores like Best Buy dont open till 9am, some stores similiar to it maybe dont open till 11am bleh.

If you didnt pre-order but still want a copy for launch try Walmart. The 24 hr walmarts will start selling them at midnight. They dont usually take pre-orders so first in line gets a copy. I got my copy of the latest WoW expansion by just going to Walmart at 11pm and getting in a designated line.

Ive only tried one digital download pre-order and didnt care for it. A hundred thousand people all trying to download the same file doesnt work very well. And some of the games like to put that file on a subscription site like Fileplanet. Sorry Im not paying some site just so I can get a file.

Im hoping in the future though that digital download works (although part of me just plain prefers getting the box from a store). It would even the playing field for west coast gamers and avoid missing a launch due to slow mail or grumpy mall managers, etc.

Hedge your bet and pre-order from multiple locations. Most places only want $5 to secure a pre-order anyway. Its insurance in case someone accepts too many pre-orders and then calls me the day before launch to tell me sorry wont have a copy for you. Sometimes I will pre-order from a store holding a midnight launch, one that opens at 7am, and then go to the 24hr walmart to see how many copies and how long the line is !

In the future I plan on pre-ordering for Star Trek Online, The Old Republic, and Fallen Earth.

    See you in line !

I'm the same way as a previous poster. If I get into beta, have an opportunity to contribute, see it and how it plays, then I imagine I'll be pre-ordering if it isn't just totally messed up (mostly if the combat mechanics are decent both ship and land based and if they don't ignore the faction vs faction part of the game too much and look to be trying to nurture it).

Otherwise I'll be paying close attention to comments made just before release from people that do get in the beta and I know and trust to determine whether I'll buy at release.

I felt completely burned by playing Age of Conan and Warhammer Online at launch.

    Never again.

The larger more reputable game companies are including "buddy passes" to hook new people into the game with a 3-7 day trial at launch or within the first 3 months of launch. I'm simply not buying a new MMORPG until I can read some post launch reviews and give it a try for myself, even if it's only for a 3 day trial.

I'm pretty content on playing single player and co op RTS / first person shooter games in the meantime until we get the new wave of MMORPG's hitting us this summer and by Thanksgiving. If the game is *really* good, it will sell itself through the fans and reviews.

Not sure what I will do, after the last few flops I said I would never preorder again, but at this point I would take just about anything that isn't yet another fantasy genre mmo.  I already know this won't be exactly what I'm looking for, but there never will be a mmo like  that.  I will probably listen to what the beta testers have to say after NDA is lifted and then make my decision.  Hopefully I will get into beta myself.

I'm deffinitely looking forward to trying it out; I don't pre-order games often, I isually wait to see how they turn out first, but this will be one of my few exceptions. Even if it flops, i'll be happy to pre-order it and give it a thorough run-through. At the very least, I'll get to meet other die-hard Star Trek gamers and it'll be my first time being with an MMO right from launch, which I think is going to be a great experience, reguardless of what happens, success or flop.

Haha, what TNG episodes do you watch?  I guess I'm just wondering which episodes followed the chief engineer the entire time, or just the first officer, or just the tacticle officer, etc etc the ENTIRE TIME through any episode or encounter.  I can't think of one and I've seen every ST episode TOS through Voyager...

So, how are you getting that playing just one of the prospectives is getting the "true Star Trek experience"?  I'm glad that STO is giving me the whole experience that I expect to get when I encounter a problem out of science fiction...  That seems to be the 'true' experience to me :)

But yes, I'll probably pre order.  I have a few friends that won beta keys and plan to at least play in the open Beta, If the game is good, I'll pre order and bring a lot of my friends with me.

Crap, i can't believe i forgot about that one.  It's one of my favorites! *ashamed*

My point still holds though. Characters are great in the shows to help convey a story.  A video game is a different genre to communicate a story/universe, but it's still Star Trek.

So this post is about pre-ordering?

What does this have to do with Star Trek Online besides the fact that you want to pre order it?

I applaud your fan-dom but I also think that its a little silly to make like a little personal maifesto or something on the forums...

I mean more power to ya if you want to pre order and I'm sorry you feel like you missed out on something if you wern't there the day of launch.

Most of us have played games the day of Launch, I'm sure you have as well, I can't think of a single game that I had fun the day of its launch.

SWG was one of the most EPIC failures on launch day ever.

I hope that your not disapointed.

I rarely if ever pre release but the truth is especially with mmos there are going to be people who irrationally push their opinion either way both for the good and the bad I most certainly plan on trying it for myself but don't put alot of weight behind what anyone says.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Been bitten far too many times by Pre-orders. Not just going to wait 'til release, going to wait at least 2-3 months post release and see how it's all hanging together.

Yes, I'll miss out on my free in-game tribble or whatever but frankly, who cares. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to STO, but given the state most MMOs get launched in I'm staying well away until the Stress Test/Open Beta (aka Launch month) is over.

Very smart. I've been in many opening day launches and for the most part they are always a mess. The only game I can remember that had a smooth launch day was Lineage II all of the others I've been in were plagued with horrendous lag, Server crashes and massive amounts of bugs among other things. Waiting for these things to get ironed out is a very smart move.

I will preorder the game. I been waiting for a Space/Land type MMO for a while and its sit in Star Trek universe is a plus. I don't even trust alot views of people any more since most people first MMO was WOW and its just better for me to check it out and see if I like it anyways.

This game will be something new than most traditioal MMOs i played, will be something in a familar universe I like, and something with potential to expand on.

I gave up being iffy on MMOs that catch my eye. I try them and if they fun I subscribe to them until a become bored.

I'm contemplating buying it but not sure I will, from the latest info from gamespot it just seems like the same old thing in a different setting. Anyways I voted to wait until I heard more about it.

Not sure, I'm not that big of a Star Trek fan and honestly I think the original system would have worked out fine so long as they made sure the promotion system was NOT left up to the players and advertised it so that no one felt cheated being a chief engineer or medical officer instead of a captain.  The first option in particular was one of the things that killed StarQuest Online for me.  Rank was handled entirely by players and became more a question of popularity and connections instead of merit.  As a result, many of the awesome things you were told you could do often went unfulfilled because you were too busy playing a cheaply dressed virtual version of what you were already doing in real life and often just as appreciated for it.

This new system?  Ehhhhh, I would have at least included an option for a non-aggressive path (science vessel perhaps?)   Other then that I'm going to wait and see.  I'm not entirely sure how you would make the idea of everyone being a captain work...
