What really gets me is your idea of the drinking culture.  We here in Aus have a pretty big drinking culture too and it pops up from time to time in the news (taxes, teen binge drinking, footy players...ect).  I think you had the wrong idea about drinking and how much you should drink.  Do you really need to drink every night?  Do you really need to go out every night?  Do you really need to go to a place with alcohol every night?

I doubt you do.  I can think of plenty of things to do with friends thats fun and doesn't involve getting smashed (though that is quite fun on the odd week).  What about that bike?  why not take that for a ride with some friends?  Go for a trip to the beach, go to an amusement park or take a trip into the city and see a show or movie.

Point is you don't need alcohol to have fun and you will find if you drink less than everyone else you are able to hold your tongue better than your friends and not embarass yourself.

As for the $15 on beer or MMO's i would say put it in your super fund instead but you should invest it into something that you find fun (it's not hard to switch unless your an alcoholic or an MMO addict (or both 0.o)

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

You are not alone, I cant afford the $15 a month anymore either. Its not due to spending it other places like drinking like some others have said but due to the fact that all of my money goes to bills and what little bit is left goes for things like clothes for my little girl, and by no means are they name brand they are kmart or walmart clothes. I was a sous chef at a 4star restraunt but due to the economy they was forced to stop doing lunch and so I end up looking for work and after months KFC is the only job I could find so now I am a 32 year old father that has no choice but to work at kfc for $7.00 an hour until something better comes up. That dont leave room for gaming. Thats why I am playing Runes of magic atm. Most paydays I dont even have enough money left after the bills to go out to a fast food place to eat.

Your Prioroties are obviously getting drunk, getting laid and going out so why do you even care about vid games. If you had a girlfriend you wouldnt need to get drunk to get laid all the time. And if its true that you need to be drunk to get laid then i lost all respect for your culture.

15 dollars is NOT alot of moeny for an MMO.(assuming that means the typical monthly payment) The thing is every one usually thinks it is unbearibly expensive in the beginning but once you start playing an MMo and you like it you'll have no poriblem tossing your 15 bucks.

I used to be like omg i'll never pay for a game monthly cuz its too much. Well after my trials of WoW and City of heroes those are 15 bucks each i play on and off for about 2 years now.

My financial situation was terrible as well. i wasnt dramatically poor but i was practiclaly on food stampsand to make things worse i went to a private school. I dont know why you think 15 bucks is going to kill you. Its jsut your state of mind thinks beer>games

in conclusion. if i'm wrong and it is a terrible price for you to pay 15 bucks a month then yes you ARE one of the few people who cant afford it. You said you make double average wage as well... it sounds like you're living in an expensive place

OP - Clearly you CAN afford it, you just choose to spend your money on other things.  Lucky for you most of the MMO's that have subscriptions are played at this point, so play a F2P and wait for something good to come out.  When it does.....drink 1 less beer a week and there you have it.  Seems pretty simple to me.

  • madlukemadluke Member UncommonPosts: 108

I can't afford that much, and never really have been able too, but now i'm saving up for university etc., so i have no chance.

  • neorandomneorandom Member Posts: 1,681

the OP is suffering from what americans are just findind themselves all caught up in, living beyond your means, simply put when you spend all your money or even more money then you make via credit and whatnot and you dont put anything into savings you cant afford to live the way youre living and eventually splat, down ya go.  so ya if you arent putting extra money away every pay period you indeed can not afford mmo subs, you prolly cant afford your internet connection either, or your cable tv.  suck it up and budget better mate.

I think the better question is, "Why would anyone pay $15 a month to play the crap that passes as an MMO these days?"

I think that very soon we are going to see a huge amount of growth in the F2P genre.

You know, for a month's worth of gameplay - I think I could not eat for one day, three times a month (seperate those days, obviously) or maybe not drink ONE night out of the week.  I mean, come on dude - you don't HAVE to get laid every night.

meh i wish mmo would cost 2-3 beers for me.. i can easily get 10 of best bear avaible.. probably 20 of mediacore..for those 15 euros.. if im saving i can eat for 2 weeks.. currency exchange rates are shit..

and no i cant afford mmo atm.. since i lost my job.. while ago.. it went bankrupt.. and even before loosing id idnt get paid few months.. while i will get most of that cash back .. this summer hopefully.. now i cant find job.. and those 15 euros/bucks is really big money here..

if 2-3 beers, was all it took for me to play mmo.. i would be playing 5 of them at a time.. cuz its what it cost atm with my currency exchange rates..

try imagine if those 15 euros would be 50 for you..

and no we dont earn 5x more than you do.. to justify exchange rates.. we earn almost same in numbers.. and our avarege is 2x less than us avarage.. just that currency rate its 2.5 or what for dollars now.. that makes it even worse :(

euros is like 3. i think and quids 4.5 or so..

@ OP, I suggest making the sperm bank a habitual stomping ground each month or whoring yourself off to old ladies and/or gentlemen.  It's okay mate....just dont let them see you cry.

I"m the kind of player that kept subscribed to LotRo for months to encourage Turbine even if I had no free time to play.

As a person who lost his job 8 months ago, with a wife back at the university full time,  not working either, and a 2 years old young daughter to take care:

    • I'm not subscribing to any MMO anymore.
    • I don't have cable TV, nor a flat TV... yet ;)
    • Our luxury is keeping our DSL access to internet.

If I really wanted it I could afford to pay a monthly subscription but as I play with my wife I think twice before spending 20-30 bucks.

As the OP clearly stated, for most of us it's a matter of choices and going from $15 to $9 a a month does not makes such a difference.

The people to whom $15 a month makes a difference aren't really concerned with MMO and monthly fees, their focus is more about eating, paying the bills and the price of the gaz.

So if you can't afford $15 a month anymore my guess is the price of monthly fees is your last concern, really.

So please by respect to these people stop crying and stand up like they do.

Hmmm, I guess I must have missed the ground-breaking influx of gamers into the F2P market in 2007...

You know, those HUGELY popular games in 2007 like Dungeon Runners, Cabal, Sword of the New World, Regnum. Yeah, those created a huge amount of growth for F2P games.

Why would anyone play the crap that passes for an MMO regardless?  Unless you're having fun, why do it at all, paying or free?  Having an explosion of crappy F2P games is no better than having a ton of crappy P2P games, is it?

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

Lol i guess i forgot to say that my car payment is for a car and driver(reason being i live far from family)there for i need the net to do certain things and my phone company and i use this term loosly for some reason won't allow you to use ike aol(yes i know it's hard to stop me well until they cancle my service) and their dial up is $50 a month as where my wireless broad band is 20 bucks cheaper and is faster than T1 but when i have to pay bills and order my food delivery for the month it's pays to have it done faster and not tie up the phone lines. now im not getting mad at anyone but i don't have cable or even satalite tv so im pretty much spend all of my time on the computer playing free mmo's or reading books. If that makes it silly not to be able to play an mmo thats pay then i would hate to see a justified reason. so i mean think about what you say im not trying to call anyone idiots here. And to tell the truth Kwosh if it seems i singled you out well i didn't i just used yours for the fact that you said fixed income my father is a disabled veteran so he gets 3 types of fixed income as where i qualify only for one it's kinda hard to do things you really enjoy with out the money.

I guess I came across mean... but my intent was not so.. I guess I was being sarcastic in a sense... I mean that if this type of entertainment is too expensive and you still wish to do this type of entertainment than there can be cuts of some sort someplace.. be it sell things on e-bay, craigslist  etc.. if we have time to be on  the internet then some how we can make money at it or cut some avenue out of our lives  to have this hobby..   dont drink a soda or 2 a week and im sure that we ALL can afford even the free games on the internet..  and there are many  even good ones to choose from.. heck   you could even try out all the free weeks of games they are advertising to get people back into their games   anyway  its suggestions    cya Kwosh

simple fix here guys. Cancel the Cable Tv, Satellite and Land line (phone). get the best internet connection for around 40-50$

use the net to watch all your shows (free or subscribe to a movie/Cable site for 10$)

Register with Skype +- 10$ a month. (less than 500 calls) <2.5min per

    Total= 70$ a month for TV, I-net and Phone.

Cost list. (all are internet researched average's)

    Cable TV 40-100$ ~ = 71$ a month

    Satellite 49-80$      ~= 74$ a month

    Phone(land line)    ~=29$ a month

    Total bill = $174

Savings useing internet for all above.....104$.   With that savings of 104 a month I bought a cell phone contract paying out and still have enough money for my needs.

you just have to be creative people lol

    thats just stupid

1 - you cant watch tv and play a game at the same time, i could if i had cable,

2 - watching tv online is illegal you are a criminial not many ppl want too be criminals

3 - if your pc breaks you loose your phone, tv and pc at the same time

4- it costs me £10 for a new phone headset whilst it costs you at least £500 for a good pc

5 - many companies (rent, hospitals etc) dont ask for a skype number nor will they call it making skype obsolete..

you want the most simplist solution too your gaming costs problems.

a bottle of 500ml coke costs around £1 here in the uk.....i am certain i drink at least 1 a day, thats £30 a month (at least) quit drinking coke and eating too lots of crap and you will have enough money

    Do like me.

First of all buy the game and then use the 30 days. I bought Vanguard and love the (damn) game and wanted more after my 30 days of good ol fun. But Im a bit cheap and dose like to spend as little cash as possible on the things I want. So insteed of pay the sub I buy the game copy once again (still vanguard folks) for 2£ and use the free 30 days I get on my existing account. Easy as pie. I win a few bucks and the company gets another copy sold (a win for them probably).

...Damn what a cheap goat Im now that I think about it. My last vaccation was built around some cheap fly tickets to far asia that I bought from an auction site....What floats my boat :)

Have a few kids and become the sole supporter for your family, then come talk to me.  Until then you just sound like a whiney teenager complaining that his allowance isn't enough to pay for his MMO subscription.

Let me know when you have REAL problems to take care of like choosing between paying your water or gas bill.  Or figuring out how many cans of soup you'll need to feed your family for the next week until you get paid again.

My point is there are more important things to worry about!  Obviously MMO games are not your main hobby.  Sounds like drinking is.  So what's the big deal if you can't afford something you don't really want to do that much anyway?

"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."

  • BattleFelonBattleFelon Member UncommonPosts: 483

I'm laughing at the fact the OP as a young guy in his  early 20s needs 3000 pounds/mo simply to "get by." That's nearly $4500 for your roomate and you - more than enough money to cover an apartment, utilities, etc.  Dude, I live in Seattle (pretty high COL for US) and my wife and I have lower fixed monthly expenses than you do. Either come to grips with the fact that MMOGs aren't your thing, or take a budgeting class. I guarantee that you could cut out a lot of your nightclubbing expenses and still have fun on the weekends.

PS - as a guy who was well on his way to having a drinking problem at 22, I'd say you should take a hard look at how much you drink and why you drink. There are a few red flags in your post, including feeling the need to drink to fit in, thinking it'sa rip-roaring good time to vandalize somebody's mailbox while drunk, and thinking that alcohol really improves your life.

you have a car and a motorbike and you go out drinking every night, and yet you still whine about 15$ a month?? take a step back and look at what you're saying... tool -_-

  • noggy1980noggy1980 Member Posts: 343

don't judge the uk based on this guy, he clearly can very very easily afford the $15 a month but because he hates his friends so much and the women he sleeps with are so ugly the only way he can find it bareable is to spend all his money on drink. Thats ok he can spend his money however he likes but it's not true to say you can't afford it, you simply chose not to afford it.

  • ArtaiosArtaios Member UncommonPosts: 550

    dude!

    3k a month?!

you really have to learn to NOT waste money...

  • noggy1980noggy1980 Member Posts: 343

My wifes and my total income is less than your £3000 a month and we

have a car, have a house and a mortgage

have a top satalite subscription - full sky hd package

have a top internet subsciption - 50Mb uncapped broadband

    have a love film subscription.

subscribe to multiple games at once and buy games whenever I want.

I have a high end watercooled pc, is a nice alluminium case (silly waste of money really but its awesome)

Have a 42" plasma, expensive floor standing 5.1 speaks and amp, blu-ray player, all the consoles, our house is nicely decorated with hardwood floors and a nice new kitchen (ikea admitadly but its good quality)

we eat top quality food, top fillet steaks, have take outs, go to resturants. Drink sensible ammount of nice quality wine, beer etc

We go to concerts, the cinema, the theatre anything we chose too.

We've been to new york, las vegas, on safari in southafrica, paris, amsterdamn.

We have season tickets at the football and ice hockey, go watch the cricket, rugby, speedway occasionally.

and we still save £500 a month to spend on vacations, high end electronics or for a rainy day. We are happy and lucky that we have enough money to enjoy the nicer things in life when so many people struggle to scrape by.

£3000 a month is a huge ammount to spend and is easily enough for a very comftable and happy life for 2 people indeed. But if you think your friends are twats then go ahead and spend it all on drink. It's quite shocking though to try and say that 2 of you spending 3 grand a month can't afford 10 pounds, it just makes you sound foolish and it sure as hell isn't because you live in the uk.
