I spent a few hours at my friend's house playing/watching Darkfall (he loves the game).

I would not call darkfall garbage, but I personally think it's some way off of being an acceptable product, especially in today's market.

Even though there are people who play and enjoy this, I think it's mostly because they're yearning, starving for something new and different and would play any such game. Darkfall provides it. I think that, like my friend, they're very easy to please. It is lacking in most aspects, but provides a seamless world, full looting upon death, and twitched based combat. "What more could you want" I hear you ask? well quite a bit more actually. That's nice and all but I think people enjoying the game would discard all other elements just to have said features.

Good graphics?   "game doesn't need gfx. Graphics don't mean !@#$! "

Good PvE/AI?    "game doesn't need pve, it's a ffa pvp game afterall!"

Good music/sound?    "game doesn't need this. just mute everything and play your own music!"

Easy/Accessible controls?   "game doesn't need them. You'll get the hang of it after playing for 2 days!"

Nice/Clean User Interface?    "It might be clunky, but it's functional!"

Good amount of content?     "game doesn't need content, besides its the players who are going to create and build the content!!"

Good amount of Polish?        "All MMO releases are like that!"

Fluid animations/spell effects/movement?    "Graphics whore!"

Nice/Immersive Lore?          "Lore? is this a joke? gamers dont give a !@#$ about lore."

etc.

These are just examples, not stereotype answers or anything, but it's in this vein generally. Most fans are just happy with what they have.

Fact is DF is not a quality product. And this is understandable as it's Aventurine's first game, they had a pretty low budget, no experience, had to release early etc. I personally did not really expect more from the game tbh.

The question I want to ask: Do you think it's OK to sacrifice all these features and components and more for the sake of the things I mentioned? I can understand why the fans are desperate for something new, but there's a limit IMO.

Anyway that's my opinion. When I play any game, I yearn for quality and polish at the very least. A smooth experience. I know I'm not alone in this.

Do not hate us. We're just different!

Ahem..: I hope the future is rosy for Darkfall fans, I wish the game well as the idea is certainly a step in the right direction, I pray for the devs to be up to the task. I don't want to take anything away from the people who are enjoying the game, more power to them.

If they had to release early after 8... or 6 years of development well sorry to them I guess!!!! /sarcasm off

In the ultimate game, no features would be sacrificed.. and everything would be great. Toobad we have companies that lie and promise features they can't commit to.

When you ask if it's ok to sacrifice x for y, I'm not sure if that's the right question.  There are a lot of games out there that don't have x or y, and they're not trolled as much as DF is.  Of course, their developers probably don't stick their knecks out the way Tasos and AV do and put themselves in the spotlight the same way, but that's another story.

The truth is that there may be some people out there for whom y is a high priority in gaming, and x for them may be a lower priority, or they may have a different opinion of the existence/non-existence/quality of x.  For them, it's easier to see the glass half full and enjoy the game more than others who see the glass as half empty.

It should be noted that preference in terms of features does not make someone more or less intelligent or rational, and refusal to play a game for any reason does not make one a martyr for the industry.  People should find the games they like and play them and stop dedicating so much time to trying to create drama in a forum.

I agree been saying it since before I even played it but its a crappy game but the only one of its kind. and its a really fun kind of game, so I enjoy darkfall imensly and will until a competitor comes along (MO).

You have made some excellent points regarding gamers in general and the search for something different. At least that is how I am feeling in the game world, something different as most of the games on the market appear to follow a certain path. Nevertheless, there are some features that, at least for me, need to be present.

The question I want to ask: Do you think it's OK to sacrifice all these features and components and more for the sake of the things I mentioned? I can understand why the fans are desperate for something new, but there's a limit IMO.

Graphics: graphics are a neat addition to the game but they are not paramount to the overall experience.

PvE/AI: Darkfall advertized some real neat concepts regarding PvE which really grabbed my attention in search of “different.” A game where you can PvP and RvR and PvE in such an environment that allowed you to do so in a seamless world. That means, “hey, go ahead and nail that NPC but risk player incoming” Pirates of the Burning Sea did this well in the hot zones however, it was instanced.

Sound: similar to graphics neat to have but again, not a major ingredient.

Easy/Accessible controls: If you “get it” than the controls are easy and accessible, point being are they constant or do they change from this way to that with each situation. For example, if the target has to be at a certain distance or/and angle for the weapon to work, does the same action hold true each time? Or do you have to figure out what works in each situation?

Nice/Clean User Interface: Again, if you “get it” than the interface is clean and nice.

Good amount of content: Content as in what? Lore? Story? A gray term to say the least, like that of polish.

Fluid animations/spell effects/movement: I do not know about fluid, are they constant.

In answering your question, Darkfall is not different; it is unstable and incomplete as advertized. Yes there is a limit to the absence of these elements in a game. For me the balance would be the community that plays the game and adds to the experience.

Exactly what do you think stereotype means?

  • damian7damian7 Member Posts: 4,449

what's sad... is how many features (still on the webpage i believe, most them them anyways) -- were simply cut.  damned near everything that made this game exciting sounding -- gone.

ffa pvp?  full looting?   i play eve - these things do not impress me as being uber or even play a factor in my wanting to play a game.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

No I think the question is spot on. It's not whether to sacrifice x for y, but to sacrifice a,b,c,d,e,f,g etc.. for x and y. Yes there are alot of games that dont have x or y, however DF is one of the EXTREMELY few games that doesn't have x, nor y, nor z, a, b, c,d etc.

DF is an exeption. I can't even call it a game as you spend more time in frustration to pretty much every game feature, instead of actually enjoying what should be, well a game.

Main reason ... they sell limited coppies... normal poeple don't want to wait around the pc for the store to open up.

That's why people aren't trying it out.

What's pathetic is that Darkfall fits all those negative points, and the DFO fanbois give all those lousy excuses for a crap game. When a game lacks in one or two departments, it's not too bad if it excells in all others. Problem is, Darkfall lacks... everywhere.

I really hoped DF would be the new game for me, a game that was harsh and difficult, not too item dependant, where death means something, that also provides decent and thrilling pvp and that is truly sandbox. I can live with crappy gfx and bad sounds if the overall gameplay experiance is right, but it simply isn't for me and i am not hard to please in that regard. the skillsystem and the twitch based combat (which feels clumsy but on the other hand too easy and not challenging) is more than crap.

but what bothers me the most is that retard tasos himself and the false promises he made, all his lies and the way he treats his customers and other people in general, this is what is making me sick and made me start hating and posting (in some eyes trolling i guess) about a game that i don't play anymore, because i feel ripped off and insulted.

Greetings and thanks for your opinion.

My friend, I don't hate you, but I also don't get the impression you actually played the game. Perhaps you are correct that a company with more money could have created a more flawless implemenation and initiation process to market, but I disagree with some of your comments. Markedly, they seemed to overgeneralize Darkfall.

The graphics behind Darkfall: if we truly want to discuss this than we're opening a huge debate. You see, it's fundamentally true that Age of Conan has the best graphics quality, but at the same time, Age of Conan is not considered a great game. Furthermore, Age of Conan has proven that cutting edge graphics mean fewer people can play. I believe, ultimately, that you are welcome to complain about the graphics, but there are a few important points with Darkfall that should be give credit.

    1. In Darkfall, you can spot someone farther away if they wear metal, because light glints off of it.

    2. The graphics are integrated into the concept of hiding and stealth (There is no "hide" skill).

Darkfall is doing pretty well on this front, and I've noticed graphic updates in patches. So, what I'm basically eluding to is that a good game is not one with awesome graphics, but one that is graphically consistant. Why? Because graphics are consistantly being changed in every game.

As well, you complained about the sound. What really threw me off was your comments about music. My friend, in Darkfall, if you are listening to music, you are probably not playing the game. I have played the game and I can tell you that most people I communicate with wear headphones to determine which directions sounds are coming from.

See, here's the problem. In darkfall, the direction of a sound can save your life. I recall once when I was mining ore the soft sound of hooves in the distance. When you wear headphones, you can turn your character in the direction of those hooves to figure out where they are coming from. This is absolutely not possible when music is playing. Those hooves are likely to be raiders and you quickly learn where to hide based on the direction of the thread.

So...music? No way. Darkfall sounds are extremely important to stealth and surviveability. This is the main reason I'm not sure you actually tried out the game.

In some ways you are correct. Darkfall has a ways to go. Me personally, I haven't had a problem with the game. I knew upon subscription that they were a small company with little money...that they were the small kids on the block. But, if you think about it, few games continue on without problems.

The impression you are putting out is one that I see from a lot of people who do not like the game. They set higher expectations for Darkfall than they would for Blizzard, Funcom, et al. And when Darkfall has issues, they use those moments to ridicule the company and call it a failure. Perhaps in time, you will see that every company has ups and downs and no one is perfect. The only thing I can tell you is that out of all the games I have played, Darkfall is currently the most intensely riveting of them.

Yo. I have played the game, not a whole lot, but I tried it and I watched quite a bit of it on my DF fanboi friend's PC. I know where you come from.

First of all these are but a taste of DF's problem. I'm not mentioning the huge grinds to skill up a weapon/magic, the exploits, hacks, the fact that you can't buy the game, poor non scalable engine and there are more I can't think of. So I haven't played the game because I'm stating already acknowledged and true issues of the game?

Anyway, I never said that graphics make or break the game, graphics is merely ONE of the parts where it truly lacks. Graphics as in character models, buildings, NPCs etc. not the game world, which is acceptable. This game doesn't only have bad graphics, it lacks pretty much everywhere and graphics is but a small percentage of it. Anyway you gave AoC as an example, well I can give you Aion which has great graphics and plays smoothly on crap PCs in end game pvp.

Concerning sound, I don't see how music prevents u from hearing the sound of footsteps lol. If I remember correctly, ALL mmos I've played have both sound and music and they work pretty well together you know? can hear footsteps as well ^^. AND you can lower down the music's volume maybe if it's to your liking.

You're just proving my point, "game doesnt need good graphics, look at AOC" and "doesnt need sound, I cant hear footsteps".

Just admit that the game actually LACKS in these departments, and others.

And again you are wrong when you say that 'a lot of people set higher expectations for DF', it's the DEVS who hyped it up immensely, and I believe that if u go to their website you'll still see many features that are missing, or present in a watered down way in the actual game.

    1. In a gaming world filled with cartoon graphics on every corner with plenty of evidence of that only growing, graphics DO matter.

    2. If you like the game play it, who cares if its going to be a mainstream hit.

What in the world are you trying to say?  Let me try, I can to better.

    1) Some folks don't care for the graphics.

    2)  Some people don't like FFA PVP with full looting.

    3) Some people don't like buggy, incomplete games lacking key features that they expected.

    4)  Some people don't like to fight to try and buy it.

    5) Some folks want a new, or NA server to get a fresh start on.

    6)  Some folks just hate Tasos.

    7)  Some folks hate Greeks due to sappy chick flicks in recent years.

    8)  Some folks really hate the arrogant, elitist attitudes frequently displayed by some of the community.

Good job! on missing the point of the thread.

What I tried to get across is that DF fans ignore/discard all said 'features' which are basic if you ask me, for 2 or 3 half-assed others. The reason why some people won't be trying it out isn't because each person likes or dislikes something about the game, but because unlike the people who are enjoying this, they don't want to sacrifice ALL other pretty basic features to play it.

I had responded to the graphics question based on the statement of "graphics dont mean &***)^" which seems to have quickly turned into "some folks dont care about graphics" how exactly did that switch happen?

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Please do not respond to me

How did we go from someone saying "graphics dont mean &&^%$" to "some folks dont care for graphics" not exactly the same thing now is it?

how did we go from supsecting members of this community being paid shills by AV to haters being paid of other companies because they fear the success of DF (i had to laugh very hard at this btw, brilliant).

    No.

The reason why some people won't be trying it out is because there is no trial yet. With a trial you don't give a shit about what others say about the game, especially when trolls are rampant thanks to Ed, you will simply download the game and try and see it for yourself. Currently you can only support your logical arguments against the game because you say you have been a beta player or a player that didn't resub, and the only way for one to know if its true or not would be to offer a trial.

Too much uncertainty around the game for you to only be able to play after spending 50 bucks.

I still think it will take a while for them to have trials though as their servers have the maximum amount of players they can handle atm and when they give 7 days trial, they will be sure you can get a good impression of the game within these 7 days. Considering the 3~9 hour rage quitting monkeys that go and make a 2/10 review about the game, this supports my idea that it will take a while for us to be able to play the game on free trials.

Tasos, during a long time, promised everybody would be able to try the game before buying. He reverted that promise a few weeks before release, just like he reversed the promise that there would be no pre-orders. The reason is obvious, his unfinished unpolished and bugged game wouldn't have survived it.

OP obviously! the game is in closed payed beta, its good that people won't be trying it in its current pathetic state and waiting for later.

I mean its not horrible atm and things are getting better, but its certainly not an acceptable product. Wait for a real release and hopefully the game will be like... professional. If not there's always MO, though they won't have large wars nor territorial conflicts (at launch)

So, DF fans do not need Graphics, Sound, Lore, GUI, Content in their games. That is really hard-core! You can try MUDs!

Oh, no. MUDs have content and lore. Well... you can stick to DF for now. Until the next game comes around, that has even less things. I am actually writing the code as we speak. It should be a small donwload. It is the next step in uber-PVP-sandbox-experience. You will love it!

Yes, true. Many people wont buy it before there is a trial.

Tasos "PR" skills dont help either but a lot of players wants to try a MMO before buying it. And many players suspect that agame that have no free trial have something to hide and wait with the trial until they have the buggs ironed out, like AoC did.

... they need a PR guy, wth is up with this crazy egotistical Greek guy putting and emo fit when someone says something bad about his game and loudly applauding whenever someone calls his mediocre-bad game "awesome"?
