A good IP and a good dev team, with good ideas. So what went wrong? It's not the mechanics, it's not the RvR, nor the community, it's the client code. The game itself runs very clunkily, textures taking forever to load, my character temporarily phasing out of the game when i put new armor on, weapons disappearing from my hand. It's like I can almost feel and see the issues with the code. This is what deters me from WAR, not the community, or the lackluster RvR, the client.
War is just another game that promised the world, and delivered frustration plus Juan.
Yea i was extremely disapointed aswell , i had ordered 2 or 3 CE i at the time but then i was messed around and lied to over and over again and even insulted by GoA(The group of amatures hired by mythic ..again) at one point that i canceled them all and had a lucky escape , i never in my life had any bad feelings towards a game company before but i can safely say the whole experiance turned me into a mythic hater and i wont ever touch a product with there name on it.
you must of felt strongly enough to have the avatar you carry still then, unless of course everything was hunky dory prior release for you, the Avatar just came in because of fan competition?
personal experience - GOA are terrible, mythic still is still EA and WAR is as broken as ever. Funcom failed with conan at launch too but they are ahead of the curve in timeline and things are not the same anymore, not perfect but getting on a scale of normality now. after trying WAR trial and just the other week Conan's trial, it is easy to see which has come further.
These days though i am in lotro, and even there i still get crap server stability and bugs and that game is 2 yrs old now.
maybe things will turn out better for WAR in the future. what is certain is that they are far behind and have a lot of catch up. will EA just close the doors here too if things slide down the s**tter more?
Yup. I had a lot of fun in the preview beta, and much more fun at the start of the game than any other MMO. Sadly, endgame sucks ass. I got tired of the repetitiveness, extreme lag, graphical glitches (how long did it take them to fix Pit of Shades?) and horrible terrain. Why the fuck am I dieing when all I am doing is riding my mount down a hill. or getting stuck on a fence I should have jumped over.
All my friends have canceled their accounts. I haven't really played in months. I'm waiting for their "free expansion" to see what they added.
On a side note, Amazon sent me an extra CE that I gave to my friend. I was pretty happy about it at the time.

Haha no i just joined in the mmo player protest of funcom that took place on here at the time :op Altho i did have more fun in aoc than i had in warhammer.
Yeah, I played the game about a month, and I just couldn't get excited about it. I men, people hyped it to be the game that WoW wished it could be, nd turned out to be the game WoW is gld it isn't.
From all the IP this game has behind it, You would have thought it would be less linear. This made AoC feel like a sandbox game, in comparison. The big thing, to me, was how a game that looked worse than LotRO, run as bad s AoC. This on a rig with 4 gigs and a HD4750. It just felt cheap in comparison to other games. I'll play F2P games before I pay for a game like this.

Sorry, but that is a totally false statement. The Warhammer Fantasy universe has had literally dozens (if not hundreds) of novels and short story collections published along with dozens of RPG game scenarios and campaign setting modules. Not to mention the massive amount of background story and setting in the various army books and such for the Fantasy Battles game.
There was an amazing depth of content, background and story already existant in the cannon lore of WH - Mythic chose to barely skim the surface.
I think you're commenting on something that wasn't really the subject of my statement.
I didn't state that the Warhammer IP lacked a deep lore.
I played the Warhammer RPG as well as the Warhammer tabletop game. I've read plenty of the novels and own plenty of army books. Games Workshop have definitely provided a great depth of backstory for their universe. However I believe it just creates a setting in which large fantasy armies clash on the battlefield - this is the core of Warhammer.
They attempted to map this universe across to an RPG somewhat akin to Dungeon's and Dragons, but this I believe wasn't so successful because the Warhammer universe isn't about 'questing, exploring' or 'adventuring' - there are few 'heroes' in the Warhammer lore and no player could never become one. Warhammer it is all about battle.
This I believe manifests itself in the MMORPG - players want their chracter to be heroes, to stand out, but in the Warhammer universe they are they are just fodder in the next wave that clashes on their enemies shields on a blood soaked battlefield.
This would be better reflected in an Warhammer MMO - don't need the questing, crafting or levelling.
I agree with OP. I was a big DAoC fan, until around NF. My most recent fantasy MMO was LOTRO, but the the PvMP didn't do it for me. I figured WAR would be a good game for me.
I've DL'd and played the trial on 3 separate occasions, and haven't logged in more than once on each trial. The simple reason is, after playing LOTRO, which runs incredibly smooth (for me) with great Gfx, I simply can't take the way WAR looks, and runs (clunkily!) for more than an hour.
While the Warhammer franchise had lore, it really only providing a setting for the combat between armies.
That would be Warhammer Fantasy Battle, one offering from Games Workshop. There was also a pen and paper RPG and numerous novels that added tons of lore to the Warhammer universe.
You probably were not aware of all of this, because you were in diapers when WFB was released.
RANT RANT - oh and another piece of continuity ruining garbage was the flying between flight points. Yes, flying between flight points in WOW can be a bit tedious... but watching a cut scene and warping to the destination is completely unimmersive. At least you got a feel of how big the continent was in WOW.
I love how the sound effect doesn't match the animation too.
One thing I also remembered about the Collector's edition was the unqiue face/mask given to each race. First, I would have given it to each class rather then race but thats just me. I guess it was good effort. But anyways, the empire face was a skull mask...it looked...interesting...I personally didn't like it. My main was a witch hunter.
Goblins had a smiley face...it was funny but really looked all the same. Elves had a piece of clothe covering their eyes which looked cool. Chaos had the worst one. It was ugly as hell.
It made me NOT want to use the extra unique face feature.
Recently un-subbed as well, after trying this game for the 3rd time. This time I got to my first city defence, and like you others I experienced the slideshow as well. I always had some lagg, tweaking in graphic settings and spending many hours trying to get info from players how to actually run the game smoothly got frustrating. Like everyone else I wanted this game to be a blast, issues listed before by everybody ruined it sadly. Hopefully for all of you still playing Mythic can prevent the severe performance issues this game has (and the cheat-programs).
What really got me to log out one night and never log in again was when we as a single warband taking a keep. As we progress up the stairs with no destruction defending I was lagging to bits. That was it. It tears my gaming experience to pieces.
I put my finger on it right after the first month for me it wasn't the client, it ran good on my computer. For me it was the lack of depth. RvR was the funnest thing in the game and nobody was doing it at the time, they were all grinding Scenarios.
But its more like the little things that killed me. Crafting was horrible it seemed even more useless than WoWs crafting system IMO. Lack of character customization, everyone looked the same even when you got a new weapon it looked the same as your last one. Lack of weapon deterioration and no death penalty killed this game for me too. They could at least have added a death penalty for PvE, not having one for PvP is fine because you did end up dying a lot.
This game just felt like there was no risk vs. reward, I didn't care if I died because I just spawned back with no penalties and to me that isn't fun. Call me crazy but I like the things that most people call an inconvenience.
I'm playing since release and the game runs absolutely fine on my two year old laptop! No hitches, no stutter, no lag - even when there's four warbands on the screen...
I have very little game problems, I get lag every once in awhile but I have never seen stuttering hitching or things like that.
The real problem with War is there are no death pentalty so all you end up with are ppl running in die and run right back, if there was a chance of loseing somthing be it xp or items then they would not be so fast to do things like that. I have tryed my best to not die and I take pride in the fact that I have not died alot be it PvE PvP or RvR I have not died alot, Most scenarios I am the one who dies the least but am close to the top damage dealer.
Assassin's like to do it in the dark and from behind.

For me it is the mechanics and the facts that they purely based it on the tabletop instead of using a lot of things from the RPG game.
But basicly it is just the things that levels are just wrong in the Warhammer world, any fan of the IP can tell you that.
Bad programming never helped anyone either of course.
If they would've waited until NOW to release the game, it would've gone off much, much better. It would've allowed for WoW to have launched their expansion and for people to filter out of it after they tried it. It would've given AoC customers to really, finally leave the game. More importantly, it would've given Mythic time to fix WAR 'before they launched it'.
WAR has some great concepts. It really does. The delivery was what failed, imho.
The other thing that kicks WAR in the teeth is the fact that a lot of what would make WAR great is largely based on having millions of players/large customer base.
Queue times for RvR scenario's are horrible on the servers I've tried. They simply take too long to get into. And, yes, I know... this is where a string of 10-15 people chime in and say 'on my server, queue times are very low and I get in almost as quick as I queue up'. Great. When, where? It wasn't that way on the 5 servers I tried... 3 of which I was moved to after my old server was merged.
RvR lakes can't handle large numbers. Even if WAR had a substantial customer base, the game couldnt' handle it. I got into some 'large-ish' battles in tier 4... lag... lag... and.... l...uh...aaahh...ggguuuh. And I have access to some of the best hardware on the market (and even some before it hits the market). It's not client side lag, it's server-side.
I think Mythic/WAR could've addressed these issues by this time and would've been ready for a solid launch, imho. As it were, the game launched and fizzled, imho. Games rarely get second chances and they are very tough to revive once they get rolled/trolled on the forums with negative reviews.
I don't know, I've heard the same about Vanguard, EverQuest II and Star Wars Galaxies, and I agree for the most part.
It's because the closed beta communities are better and with games like EQ2 what made it better was the fact it was all on one server and it was so packed there was 6 versions of antonica. I really don't undersatnd why they launched with so many servers when they can clone each zone over and over.
I got into some 'large-ish' battles in tier 4... lag... lag... and.... l...uh...aaahh...ggguuuh.
Yea, they have expand to 170 people per realm on fortress fight in Iron Rock, and they improved the lag from previously 2 - 3 seconds to 1 second on the fortress fight.
I have very little game problems, I get lag every once in awhile but I have never seen stuttering hitching or things like that. Mythic shills can play on the servers, so you guys don't get the lag.

Well I'll put my input here just for another opinion that doesn't really matter. I have played for about 4 months pretty solid (disclaimer I have only played destruction side and have zero desire to play Order, thats just me tho... I played Zealot, Squig, DoK and the way I typically lean is caster DPS so a Sorc as main) as far as bugs or stability problems I haven't seen any other than a very rare crash to desktop. Having said that, I do have some pretty good hardware but lets not get into a "my hardware is better/as good as yours" pissing match, just suffice it to say I have no performance complaints whatsoever.
The game has:
an awesome framework
not bad graphics
a decent community albeit unfortuneately forced to be multiple personality types (from a total disconnect between PVE and PVP which is totally to be expected, just extreme in this case)
Oh yeah and the crafting not that I ever have been a big fan of crafting in any MMO, really seems lame, but I din't really do much with it in all fairness.
I have two main problems with the game and they are both design faults, one of these could be fixed quite easily if Mythic gave a rat's ass and the other I would have to say is between "don't hold your breath" and "LMAO ARE YOU KIDDING?, There will be two new generations of MMOs out at the rate they fix things"
First and most easily fixed is a horrible skill imbalance between classes. there are at least two classes with a "I win" Icon on their spellbar and guess what, they are both Order classes.
Next one won't matter so much if you like to PVE, but if you don't you're gonna hate level 31 to 39 cause all you can do is dig in and be a leach for 8 levels and they are gonna be a long eight levels. as soon as you click 32 your done with Tier 3 Scenarios and you're situation is: you can barely scratch any of the players who are any more than 3 levels above you while they can pretty much one or two shot you (its not about skill its about: they click that then this and oh yeah hes dead wheres my next victim?), and sadly there is not much else to do but die a lot, and try to get in on the dieng breaths of one of your teamates kills. Sorry but 32 to 35 against 40 is a loss I don't care how hard you try, 36 - 38 against 40 maybe if hes down and doesn't get any heals but I doubt it, then 38 or 39 OK and 40 vs 40 then just hope he isnt one of the classes mentioned above with the "I win" skill on his spellbar.
I have played quite a number of MMOs starting with the original EQ about 9 months after lauch. Everyone of those games have had some of these types of problems but I have never seen this situation as far askew as it is in this game. Totally "retarded" at times that you would think if they gave a crap at all it would be quite easy to parse the collective damage logs and see that something is VERY wrong with the balance in Warhammer Online.

Just a week ago, on Iron Rock, we had a fortress fight, and we are still having some lag issue.
It was about a second cast delay.
You are smoking crack, right?
You do know there is a trial available? And that most of all these are all opinions.
Don't take what 4-5 people say as fact until you've experienced it for yourself.
Warhammer ran well on my year-old laptop well, no issues or anything.
Yea, that makes sense. I will get a free trial. It was totally brainless of me to listen to someone else.
