Kieron Gillen's Re-Review, If its still for Eurogamer, will it be fair ?

summitussummitus Member UncommonPosts: 1,414

Even though I personally dont really take any notice of reviews ( If I want to see what a game is like there is no better reviewer than yourself ) I have been interested to see how this all turns out .

I have been reading some of Kieran Gillens Previous Mmo reviews and to all intensive purposes the guy certainly does seem to have a great journalistic integrity and fairness.

here's a list of some of his Mmo reviews , I chose these because they were done for Eurogamer.

So I'm wondering .. what do you guys think , have you played any of the games he has reviewed for Eurogamer ?

And if so do you agree with his reviews and scores ?

I've played all the games he's reviewed here and have to say after reading them he seemed pretty spot on.

    yes.

i think its would be in his own and EGs interest to get a good and clean review.

I only had time to read the GW review and it was very much what I thought of the game when I played it, seems like a good reviewer.

Played the first two. The fact that he gave Matrix Online 5/10 surprises me; I personally thought it was utter cack that failed on practically every level. I actually think he played the game more reviewing it than I did as someone who bought it.

Read all his reviews, though, and the one thing that does come across is that he knows a fair bit about MMOs and was probably the guy that should have got the DFO gig in the first place. But, if only for reason of entertainment, I'm glad he didn't.

Should be interesting to see what he has to say, either way.

If that guy gave Matrix Online 5/10, then you better be ready for another 2/10 for DFO...

Funny thing is though as a player of Darfall , I find it far more enjoyable than I did the Matrix Online, so for me a 2 / 10 score again would "maybe" make me smell something a little fishy .

Ed Zits reviews are pretty much in depth of "OMGTHISSUX" or "OMGTHISROX"

Kierons reviews seem to be far less shallow.

Yes because after reading the Zitron  zero journalistic integrity Train Wreck of a review, I would like to think that a respected game journalist of Kieron Gillens stature , would have a really solid undisputable reason for giving Darkfall 2/10 , so hence the "maybe" .

I think he is a harsh reviewer, I wouldn't be surprised if he slams the game, now that he's obligated to do a second review for the site.

But who cares about him. I want a "Yahtzee" review.

Thats interesting, could you tell us which reviews you thought were harsh ?

and whats a "Yahtzee" review .. do mean just roll the dice and score it from the outcome ? ..

This is what I dont get, no one has been really critical yet.

    No the other guy wasnt.

Critical would be to take the bullet points of the games content on display at darkfall.com and go through how much is not as presented, missing or plain lies.

Critical would be to talk about the customer service side of things, which is worse than many free to play games.

Critical would be to talk about actually purchasing the game in the first place.

critical would be to comment on the in game community, which whilst it does have some pockets of sanity in some guilds, for new players with no prior in game contacts who are left to find friends around the starter zones is like being locked in a sanitarium with the sociopaths glee club.

The first point alone would render this game with a worse review than the last one.

Tasos, as with his followers, should have simply dismissed the review, because demanding someone do a real review is somthing that they will regret I suspect.

what makes me wonder sometimes is, is tasos really believing what he is talking about, or are all his lies on purpose, just to draw attention and to get a few extra bucks?

i just reread some interviews from the last months and i had to pause like every 5 minutes to sit back and /facepalm.

he must be aware that he made a complete idiot out of his self in the gaming industry. who is gonna fund his next game? he won't be able to fund it off darkfall i'm afraid.

Thankyou for pointing out the error of my ways I shall endeavour to ensure I use the correct English in futue,

However your Honour I would like to say in my humble defence , that intensive purposes is quit commonly used as a slang version of " Intents and purposes" and below M'Lord is a link to offer mitigating circumstances,

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=For all intensive purposes

please consider this evidence when handing down sentence.

You are excused this time  by the grammar police for using the wrong phrase.  :-)  However, you should do a little more research before giving a citation to show you may be correct.  Your citation states that as to the phrase "intensive purposes":

"Nonsense, it means nothing. Its what people say when they really mean to say "for all intents and purposes".

    1. For all intents and purposes = Correct

    2. To all intents and purposes = Correct

    3. For all intensive purposes = WRONG! You should have paid attention in English class! "

I wondered this too.   I can't decide if he is utterly clueless, or if he just doesn't care how bad his reputation gets slammed.

With 3 months to go he had to know

    1. The game was not going to be 'feature' complete like he claimed in Decemeber.  the game is not even close to having the features listed on the website, and it looks like they aren't making any progress to add any of that stuff

    2.  " We will never miss a launch date once we announce it".   So they announce a launch date, and within a few weeks miss it.

    3. " There will be an open trial before anyone is asked or money".

    4. " There will be a journalistic review beta before launch'

He made all those comments just weeks before they weren't followed through on.   At this point, I think he just says whatever he thinks will go over well at that moment, and doesn't care if he is shown to be wrong even a few weeks later.   Every other gaming company always cautions that things may change, get postponed etc, but Tasos just makes these statements like he is certain something is going to happen, and then it doesn't even get close to happening.

I would be inclined to think they are stuck in a viscious cycle now.  I'm sure Eurogamer was about as happy with the Tasos reply as he was with the review.

Would be interesting to see a 1/10 to keep the "DRAMA" going.......

Actually considering the increased traffic boost that EuroGamer got as a result of all the advertising that Tasos did for them... I'd say they were VERY happy with the results.  Quite a bit happier than Tasos was with a 2/10 review it would seem anyway.

I would expect them to play up the "Re-Review" as well.

It makes very little personal difference to them what the score is, or even what the words in the review are.

They are a site that generates it's revenue from the number of hits the site gets.  All this "drama" did for them was increase their revenue... what incentive would they have to try and make the "drama" go away?

The best outcome for EuroGamer would be a "Re-review" score on one end of the spectrum or the other.  So, a 1-2, or a 9-10.  All of the scores in the middle will have varying degrees of less impact.  The absolute worst from them would be scores in the 5-6 range.

Regardless of how the next score comes out... there are a lot more people that know of EuroGamer now than did before Tasos' rant.

His reviews have lower rates than the rest.

Matrix Online on metacritic: 6.9, he gave it a 5.

WoW has a 9.4 in metacritic, he gave it a 8.

Others had a score close to the average reviews. I just feel he's not really into praising and overlooking the problems. I could be wrong, just a personal gripe affecting his reviews or whatever.

Anyways, even if they give it a bad rating again I don't think the same e-drama should be made around it. Unless Av's CEO wants to be laughed at, because honestly it's ridiculous.

Eurogamer is a large and pretty well respected gaming publication. It's probably insulting to them to allege that they cared about Darkfall or its meager fan base enough to do this simply for publicity's sake.

Yes I expect they are quite well respected , so if thats the case do you think them leaving a review of a game that is flawed to such an obvious extent and written with practically zero journalistic integrity , up on their site , dont you think the least they could have done was take the review down pending further investigation ?.

After all even people that dont care for game are mostly saying that Zitron's review was appalling and no way could an mmo have a fair review after only a few hours actually playing it.

Maybe your right they probably did'nt care about Darkfall and its fanbase , although maybe they should care about their own integrity as gaming site.

Anyway despite that what do you think , will a re- review be fair ?

Why would he need, as you say, journalistic integrity? He's a critic, not a journalist. Critics are barely writers.

Why do people who dont like this game care more about there being no features then the people who play the game? Seems kinda sad......I think Tasos forcing them to do a second review is F#$king hilarious, he acts more like a normal human being/gamer and for that gets shit! It will be fair i believe as they know he will be watching there every move muhahahhahahahaha.......

Well, one guy cant make all reviews. And some reviewers logically are worse than others.

Anyways I think he will rate it fairly but that doesn't mean it will get a good score. But the guy will at least play more and have better points for both the good and the bad stuff.
