I admit I was wrong and thought it was vaporware right up to release. Turns out the developers were just too ashamed of the game to show it to anyone. Now the question is who was the most wrong, those who thought it was vaporware or those who believed the BS the developers were laying on about the features. From what I have heard about the game it will brealk the "huge pile of steaming dung" standard that D&L set.
Every game that has a future release schedule is vaporware until it can be played. Until you can prove empirically through direct interaction the features of a game those features remain vaporware. I stand by that assessment to this day and will continue to do so.
When you consider the long list of features that are advertised for this game, and match that to the existing features reported in the game, you also can call those features vaporware.
Is the game vaporware now? Doesn't seem so. But there sure is a hell of a lot of vapor surrounding it.
Funny how people always defend the games they like (when not feature complete at launch) with the age old statement that "Even WOW was a mess at launch," which is of course true, but when it concerns games they DISLIKE that argument is lost somewhere in Narnia and every aspect which is not or poorly implemented gets scolded in hellfire.
The fact that most mmorpg's have issues, and sometimes really big problems at launch doesn't mean the game can develop in something quite worthwhile to a lot of people after some time.
This is vapourware, compare what the game you were promised is to what you have now.
Not the same game, clearly the game they were saying they were developing never came out.
This.
And for the record, I'm still here, Huckleberry. I didn't run anywhere. I said it was vaporware, and I was right. I admit I was wrong when I thought they might not have any game at all, they did have a game, but it is obviously far different from what they claimed to have, and the development updates appear to have been mostly lies. Darkfail was the epitome of vaporware, the fact that they finally released something doesn't change that. BitBoys also built actual graphics cards and ended up selling their technology to another company after they went bankrupt, but they are one of the classic examples of vaporware in the history of computing because they made wild, impossible claims about their product to generate hype and repeatedly failed to produce said product, exactly like Darkfail. Delay after delay, exactly like Darkfail. And when they finally did produce what they had it was a pale shadow of what they claimed to have, just like Darkfail.
In conclusion, Darkfail WAS vaporware, now it's just a really shitty game that few people want to play. The people [including me] who said they thought the Darkfail project was a total scam and they weren't developing a game at all were wrong, that is true. And for that I apologize to the Darkfail fans and developers, but the larger point that the game was vaporware I have to admit I was correct about.
That is not correct. The standard definition of vaporware is applied to a game that has gone outside of the normal paramaters and perceptions fo development, including but not limited to scheduling, and financing, the company disolving, merging, etc.
In other words there must be some reason to believe the game might not release before it is categorized as vaporware.
If Blizzard starts making a new game it's not instantly "vaporware" until it is released. It only becomes vaporware if at some point the release becomes questionable.
Then, if the game does release, it was still vaporware because the release was questionable, and after the release it becomes "redemptive software".
Half Life was once vaporware, it is now redemptive software. Because Half Life released and became a successful game, that doesn't change history and make it a fact that it was never considered to be vaporware.
What happened to the [Edit:] very happy people [Edit] who said that DF was vaporware? It didn't exist, remember?
Where are those posters? They couldn't admit that they were wrong? This isnt a post to say DF is the best game ever, but in all honesty, it recieved a shitload of hate based on the fact that it wasnt released. Something about a few fanbois making up stories about the gameplay, and using bots to play with, or some such nonsense.
Anyway. You trolls [Edit:] enjoy lewd acts. [Edit] Darkfall was obviously released (Even if there is a lame-assed shop delay thing going on), and you were wrong.
Update - this isnt a troll post. I'm calling people on their bullshit and slander. Nothing baiting about it. If over a hundred forum users cry "VAPOURWARE!", and the game is released, then someone should say something about it. I've edited the post a bit to ensure that carebear whiners don't get offended.
Why has this been posted again? Didn't we already go through these string of posts already? Seriously, why?
This post is a few months late. Live in the now and join the new arguements.

I still wonder about this.
I would like to see a list of staff working on DF vs date vs progress? (Of course I never will)
There is no question that there was someone working on DF at some time who had talent (wrote the basic engine etc) but I wonder if that person (or persons) is (are) still there?
It just looks to me like the current team lack the skills needed to make their ideas a reality?

DF has not being "widely advertised" and i am a happy customer having obtained and currently playing the game.

sadly, your ignorance of common terms, does not help validate your QQing or trolling. not one iota.

If you compare what was promised to what we got, then you will realize that, yes, it was vaporware.

The promised Darkfall was vaporware.
The Darkfall we got is 1/10th of the promised Darkfall.

In that sense the OP has a point. DF managed to 'launch', now let's see if they manage to get some more servers up and running, fix the birth complications and actually start to make enough money to buy Tasos a nice little seaside mansion to settle down to try and forget about the huge load of hate and cr*p in general which has been flung his way in the past years or so.
The fact that most mmorpg's have issues, and sometimes really big problems at launch doesn't mean the game can develop in something quite worthwhile to a lot of people after some time.

Wrong. Vapourware are games that never see the light of day. Darkfall has seen the light.
Well.. I played the game, and changed my opinion. We, the gamers, could be terrible people, but if a game is good, is good.
couldnt have said it better myself
"The promised Darkfall was vaporware.
The Darkfall we got is 1/10th of the promised Darkfall."
+1 The game itself wasn't vaporware, but they game they promised was, I called the trolls and fanbois out on that one as well and got backlashed lmao.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
Darkfall launched, true.
There was a time, not too long ago, when that seemed highly unlikely.
Someday it might even be available to everyone who wants to sign up.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
Looking at the definition on the net, yes it is VAPORWARE.
vaporware
/vay'pr-weir/ n. Products announced far in advance of any release (which may or may not actually take place).
Merriam-Webstar

?v?-p?r-?wer
Function: noun
a computer-related product that has been widely advertised but has not and may never become available"

This is your logic OP.
P.S. It is vaporware.
