I was logged into Shadow Council alliance today and at 3pm I was spreading the news over the trade channel, lfg channel. and general channel.
I was very surprised to get so many responses from people who didnt even know Bioware was working on a project, much less a star wars mmo was coming. I otherwise only had 3 responses that were positive.
I suspect TOR will bring in a lot of new gamers to the MMO genre (like WoW did) more than taking wow gamers away.
I do think it may have a larger impact on Star Trek Online and Stargate Worlds though, and if it's wildly successful may make Blizzard go back to the drawing board concerning their Starcraft MMO (no it hasn't been announced but if it's the same Blizzard that cancelled warcraft adventures 1.5 years before announcing wow then we should be getting the starcraft online announcement in a couple months :P).
I doubt it, but maybe this one will pass the 1 million sub mark? Bioware is known to make polished and content filled games. That usually attracts a lot of people...
Hauken Stormchaser I want pre-CU back Station.com : We got your game Yeah?, Well i want it back!!!
Its far to early to tell, in 2 or 3 years time when SWTOR gets here we dont know what WoW will be doing, we could all be enjoying blizzards next MMO at that time.
I firmly believe that the MMO market is satiated with Fantasy MMOs. When TOR is released it will be the only blockbuster alternative genre MMO on the market so I assume the chance for success is much higher than for the recent fantasy semi-failures.
you know i know people can't seem to resist but don't start this vs WoW crap, new games come out and barely affect WoW if even at all. This game will have more affect on non WoW mmo's then WoW, its been proven over and over as games release so just drop it.

I tend to agree with this. WoW only grew to the behemoth it is over time. Nothing will beat WoW 'off the bat'. It will take time, excellent marketing and of course great gameplay and continuous development for something to match it.
I think it's too early to tell. No one knows when release is for TOR (I'm guessing 1.5 to 2 years at least). By then, anything could happen.
Second, WoW has been on a downward spiral for sometime (at least that's the impression I get from their forums and in-game). The game is just getting older and older and people ae moving away. WOTLK may brighten it up for a bit, but it's really a very old game.
People intend to be drawn more to the fantasy line instead of the sci-fi setting. Just take a look at all the mmorpg's that have the fantasy settings.
Will it impact WoW? I think all mmorpg's will take a portion of its WoW player base, but it will be minimal. WoW has been around for 4+ years and has already established itself. People have dumped 1000 upon 1000 hours of gameplay to WoW and will probably never leave, they have to much time invested in their characters.
Only Blizzard can kill WoW, it they really want to, but we all know they won't, its their money maker and every other game they make is just extra crumb on their paychecks (diablo, starcraft etc etc).
On a different note..
Take Everquest for example. That game is still going, because it has a dedicated fan base. Ultime Online is another, despite its rocky past and WoW will be no different. WoW is here to stay and probably will for years to come, despite whatever mmorpg's are released.
SWtOR will definetly be a hit out of the gates, however will it retain customers after the initial release date? Only time can tell and we all can look forward to a New Hope! <--- I had to throw that in
I knew this WoW vs thing would pop up eventually, didn't think it would pop up so quick lol but anyway no I dont think it will impact much on WoW.........WoW will dwindle out on it's own eventually.
Now all we need is numerous old republic guild advertising threads popping up.....actually.....
Nerf herders [ NERFED ] is a new guild starting up on insert server name here RVR, PVP, PVE WTFBBQSITH!!!!
i dont want WoW player in this game ,they can have their game ,i dont care. the more they stay the more we have less stupid in.
This...times 10.
We don't need the wow players, let them enjoy their game, let us enjoy ours, everybody wins.
hey NAO! I used to play SWG for years! it wasnt until they ruined it with NGE that i left for wow.. because it was a better game.like alot of people did! So yes when this game comes out i will be leaving wow for swtor! so dont bash ppl who play wow! for some of us its not our fault they destroyed the only MMO SW game there was and are trying to get our MMO gaming fix!
As a species, we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides, and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. How do you think people invented politics and religion?"
Well, Bioware have said that they are hoping to compete with WoW.
I'm a WoW player, and will be playing TOR when it launches. I've enjoyed many of Bioware's titles in the past, including the KOTORs and Mass Effect, and am imagining (albeit based on insufficient information for a certainty) that TOR will play like a sort of multiplayer KOTOR, which I'm very interested to see.
So, apologies if you're one of the "If WoW players buy TOR I will quit!" crowd, 'cos a lot of us are planning to.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
TOR will end WOW's massive growth. Maybe even stop it cold. (along with all the other mmo's especially aion) Nothing more. TOR will be the catalyst. That's my prediction. It's up to you guys(the fans) to make TOR anything more. For real.

Please, I hope this doesn't cater to WoW players ... if they would join this game I would leave that instant.
Honestly, I had to vote no.

It is way too early to tell.
Come back in 2-3 years and we'll talk about it.

.: mmogle.com - the mmo question hub :.
If SWTOR took atleast 1-2 million subs from blizzard i'd be happy
Two different genres, and Star Wars has a very specific fanbase. So I'm not sure.
Let's hope it is not like the previous kotor's ... finish the story in a month and have no reason to log in anymore.

Hmmm...
I'm thinking no not really. Since Star Wars is sci-fi, it will probably effect games like Stargate.

First, its WAY too early to say and second I rly couldnt care less.
We don't have enough information yet.
That said - Bioware has a good reputation. WOW is an aging game - as time goes by, its going to lose its staying power.

It will happen, and it doesn't have to be painful unless you guys decide to make it so.
It might impact guildwars, though.
My brand new bloggity blog.
