I'm actually a bit scared to come-back. The thing is that the first time I layed my eyes on this game I got lost in it byond anything. I don't know if any people still do try to use/read the manual that comes with the game and try figure it out, well I tried and I failed. The game is so complicated I could not even figure out how to get started (Not the walking part but like where everything is and such).
II played this game for 2-3 days and stopped, mainly because there were no people, no one EVER talks (that is at the starting area) and it's a hastle trying to figure this game out. However there is a part of me that wants to come-back and re-try it.
They have introductory NPC's now to help explain things and make it easier. They also give quests so you can understand how to play. It's a lot easier than it used to be. Oodles of new people all over the place.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best. FFXI Character: Satimasu FFXI Server: Valefor FFXIV Character: Tamorae Fonteil
Satimasu I am going to jump back into FFXI again once I get home and get everything installed. Coming to Kujata since that seems to be the place for new players mind if I hit you up for a shell tonight?
i'm thinking about giving it a go as well... installing+updating playonline right now. cant remember my registration though... hehe
EDIT: well i couldnt get my PlayOnline account back up, now trying to get back in through Fileplanets 14-day free euro trial. After that i'll see if i spend some money to buy the complete game again
EDIT#2: and once again, i cannot get in... i have to register with PlayOnline for the trial as well, which requires a serial code. and for some reason it doesnt accept the one i got with the e-mail given by Fileplanet... *sigh* no luck for me i guess
playing: Lord Of The Rings Online played: Age Of Conan, Lineage 2, World of Warcraft, Guildwars, Last Chaos, Final Fantasy XI, EVE Online waiting for: Star Wars The Old Republic and Final Fantasy XIV
Read through this thread again and damn there sure are alot of new, and previous players returning to FFXI all set to join Kujata Server. I've been contemplating returning for awhile, but never decided yet cause I was gonna return to another MMO instead. However, with the announcement of FFXIV which I've been awaiting a release of for a long time, I'm thinking that returning to FFXI is going to be a definitive Hellz Yes, until FFXIV arrives!
Still might be a few weeks though as I'm getting really close too affording a 37" HDTV for my PC, and I'd prefer to wait until I get that beast to play FFXI on...hehe! If my account I played on about 5 months ago doesn't work then maybe I'll start over on Kujata and join you all.
I tried Aion during this preview weekend, and sure enough same ole' crap we've done over and over previously, and that is definitely a NO for me. Looks pretty but thats all it has...

Kinda hard to find. Anyway, you should be able to get up and running.
allrighty, i'm going to go through this step by step. You guys can correct me where i go wrong.
1) I go to the Fileplanet Website, search for the FFXI EU free trial, download the gameclient (which includes PlayOnline)
2) After the download is finished i go to the EU trial key webpage
3) I request my trial key by typing my e-mail adress twice
4) I install PlayOnline + let the program do it's software updates
5) When i check my e-mail i received the mail from Square Enix with my trial key (just 1 key, the one for FFXI)
6) Open PlayOnline
7) Try to register a new PlayOnline account
8) when i try to register i need a PlayOnline key, and this is where i cannot get any further. I've tried entering the keycode from my mail, didn't work
The trial key i received from Square Enix is only for the game, i've read the Q&A on the PlayOnline website there is nothing on that page that gives me the slightest clue how to get a key for a PlayOnline account...
So, any ideas? ^^
playing: Lord Of The Rings Online played: Age Of Conan, Lineage 2, World of Warcraft, Guildwars, Last Chaos, Final Fantasy XI, EVE Online waiting for: Star Wars The Old Republic and Final Fantasy XIV
The key you recieve from SE is in fact the PlayOnline registration code. It has the two week trial built in to let you access the game. You'll enter the actual FF codes (base + expansions) if/when you decide to purchase the game.

I thought FFXi would be a great match for me as I was a long time EQ player......Problem was I just never got into it......The graphics were a major turn off (even worse than EQs) and it felt like all I did was wander around aimlessly.......I also did not like that your health would not regen when you sat and you had to buy potions.....As a new player that was very incovenient......I had heard alot of stories of how great the community was but once I was in game I couldnt get anyone to group up.......I tried to solo a few monsters but with no money to buy potions the game got old very quickly......I liked some of the single player FF games but FFXI was probably one of my worst MMO experiences.
Seems a lot of new player are going to kajuta (might write this one wrong lol), i'm currently a 23 whm in bahamut but i might change server if there is a nice community or LS
requested a new trial key and this one seemed to work just fine.
now i have to update the game and the estimated wait time says 9 hours >-<
im gonna let it do that overnight...
after that i'm gonna join the Kajuta server, hope to see you guys ingame hehe

I played FFXI for about a year and half over 4 years ago. It was my first MMO. I have a 52WHM/SMN. I reactivated the account a year ago and was overwhelmed to say the least. I gave away all my money to a few old friends and all my gear when I left so all I have left is my fishing gear.
I want to start again, since no other MMO has ever taken its place in my heart, but all of my old friends are gone on Caitsith (was the server I was on) and I didn't have anyone left to talk to.
Is 52 still worth it to not start over again? I remember how long and time consuming it was to level, but I was also such an MMO noob at the time. I feel like if I reactivate I will just getting overwhelemed and log off again and Caitsith didn't seem very nooby friendly.
I guess it's a dumb question, but do you think starting from scratch would allow me to fall in love again? I really did love the fishing, exploring, crafting, cuteness, etc.
Leveling has been made alot easier with the level sync system in place, so you can find a party at any level you're at or below.(down to 15 i think) Aswell with the addition of anniversary rings and emporer bands (xp rings) levling is not too bad.
FoV - field of valor books aswell allow you to do mini quests to kill x amount of mobs in a zone once every game day for added xp and Tabs that can be traded in for buffs like reraise, refresh, regen. and to summon newly added NM's. alot of groups tend to do FoV pages especially at lower levels to help level faster.
At around lvl 30 you can do a quest to get a henchman if you like to solo, they can be quite useful and level's with you.
I came back to the game (3 months ago) after a 4 year hiatus. I had liquidated all my assets, and given them to friends ingame, except fishing gear. I was a 44 bard/Whm, but decided to start a new class since I came back, I quickly ran through the quest for blue mage and am now 61, working my way up. I am on bahamut server and it is a fairly busy server with plenty of groups around. I dont know how it is on the others.
So to sum it up, It's not too late!
I am sure I am missing alot of other cool new features that have been added to this game

Did you start a new character or new job? I know the missions etc were rough to get to ride the airships if I remember correctly. Having all that done makes me scared to start all over again.
BTW ...Thanks for your feedback! I wonder why we both kept our fishing gear
You don't have to start over. If you would really like to be on another server (besides the closed off Odin and Bahamut), then just do a server transfer. I think it's 25 bucks and has a 90 day cool down before you can change again.
I think you can make new friends though on your current server and wouldn't have to worry all that much.

yeah the controlls are pretty complex in some way, but with all the other things we learn everything, with a little practise.
But you have a point in that you saying, its absolute silence in the game, i mean no one talks.
If you want we can play together all on this tread, say server and name and i join the game.
Cya in game.
Patching as I write this.
I will be in game as Psylion on Kujata!
So, what's your experience been like so far there? Thinking about coming back too but am on the fence.
