There is no such thing as MMO addiction.
People who neglect themselves or their responsibilities in favour of playing MMO's don't do so because the MMO has addicted them; they are suffering from an impulse control disorder. These people do need help, often in the form of an intervention as they are unable to break their self-destructive cycle themselves .. but labelling the problem as "MMO addiction" muddies the waters by suggesting that the MMOs themselves are the root cause. They're not.
It's simple. If we didn't have the Darwin Award, the world would be over populated. Mother nature is pretty good at weeding out the stupid to ensure our species evolve and survive.
Although some of you posters here has me questioning that theory.

Hadn't seen that before, interesting read. Cheers for the link, it's always nice to have corroberation.
In Europe it's going to be recognised as an addiction when the papers institutions have brought forward are approved. It's just taking a lot of time to do this.
I think actually a lot of clinics now describe MMO addiction as internet addiction.

The validity of I.A.D. (Internet Addiction Disorder) is just as heavily disputed.
Even the MD who coined the phrase (Dr. Ivan Goldberg) now acknowledges that it's a misleading title as it's just a symptom of other disorders rather than a separate and diagnostically distinct addiction. Below is a quote from him regarding the subject:
"Dr. Goldberg said that he has redefined I.A.D. as "pathological Internet-use disorder." He explained, "I.A.D. is a very unfortunate term. It makes it sound as if one were dealing with heroin, a truly addicting substance that can alter almost eveny cell in the body. To medicalize every behavior by putting it into psychiatric nomenclature is ridiculous. If you expand the concept of addiction to include everything people can overdo, then you must talk about people being addicted to books, addicted to jogging, addicted to other people."
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
I don't really agree with him. Something is different between internet addiction and MMO addiction. I have played or grinded in MMO and I didn't enjoy it. If I'm on the internet, I'm usually just looking things up and looking for info, I enjoy this and choose to do this.
If I could choose not to grind I wouldn't (and arguably I can, but to progress you are forced to do this), but stil I managed to grind in MMO in the past. Why then? Addiction? I'm not sure, but I think so.
I have consciously chosen not to do this anymore, but it wasn't that easy, I came back to MMO which I said sucked, but with a little bit of willpower I manage to completely ignore those games which take too much time. I still do not believe it's as simple as reading a lot or going online a lot..there's a difference.
Yeah I think its absolutely appaling that no safety warnings are given out with games......because they are EXTREMELY dangerous products!!!! I have been playing Spellborn recently and I nearly died!! I was playing it for days on end without stopping once!! I didnt eat anything, drink anything or sleep at all because the damned game didnt tell me too! Fortunately a friend found me in time and saved my life. Phew! That was a real close call I can tell ya. Now I deeply fear playing any more of these dangerous games.......but......but.......I MUST play them! I cannot stop!! However if a safety warning appeared every hour saying things like "Take a 20 minute break", "Go to the toilet" or "Isnt it time you went to sleep young man?" then I might feel more safe playing as my life would not be put into such extreme danger. I also believe that safety warnings should be attached to EVERYTHING!!! I was reading a book several weeks ago and guess what? I NEARLY DIED!!!! I couldnt put it down......and the problem is that I'm a slooooooowwww reader. Again I didnt eat, sleep or even go to the toilet when I needed to. I was sat in a pool of my own excrement and urine. It was very unhealthy indeed. Fortunately I was saved by a friend again. None of this would have happened if there was a safety warning on every 10th page.......but because I wasnt told how to look after myself, that damned book nearly killed me!!! So yes I call for safety warnings on everything!! This is a very dangerous world we live in and millions of peoples lives are being put at risk with every game, book, film, food, drink, car, bike, horse, plane or any other object or activity that gets utilised by someone. My heart goes out to every deeply intelligent and wise soul that has been snuffed out by a lethal computer game. It needs to be stopped or it wont be long before the entire human race becomes extinct!
seek help - if you cannot stop - that is obsession and compulsion - the core of addiction. Believe it or not the majority of people do not suffer from your problem. Talk to a Doctor and join a 12 step program.
I was hospitalized for dehydration and sleep deprivation after reading through 20 pages of this thread. I'm going to have to sue the OP, because he didn't put a warning somewhere.

So. What chemical do mmo's put into your body? MMO addiction is just like poker addiction... a way for people to make excuses as to why they aren't responisble for their own actions. If poker or mmo's are addicting than EVERYTHING is...
Why is there a need for a game to have to tell you that you need to rest/sleep/take a walk/go to the bathroom/eat? Since when did they design games to babysit the players? Next thing you know you want the game to not only tell you that you need to do those tasks but to do them for you too. If you can't be responsible for yourself what makes you think that anyone else can? Your body automatically sends signals to you telling you that you are tired/hungry and all sorts of stuff, the fact that you choose conciously/subconciously to ignore them means that you will most likely ignore the game too if it told you to do that during gameplay.
Why is there a need for a game to have to tell you that you need to rest/sleep/take a walk/go to the bathroom/eat?
Simple, because some people forget to eat / sleep and walk around. Each MMO designer knows EXACTLY how much you play, up to the second, if they can prevent people from making mistakes so easily by checking the amount of hours played and by warning those players, they should and have an obligation to do so.

So we should have those same warnings on TV's when you watch for a long time? Cars when you drive for a long time? Anything people choose to do and ignore bodily needs?

Actually Mercedes Benz now has a beeping signal when it notices you're falling asleep, yes we should have those systems if they help and are easy to implement. MMO companies know exactly how long you play, assessing the playtime of someone is the easy part.
Convincing them that they're playing too much is the hard part, but the warning is easy and MMO companies are doing way too little when they have all the info right at their fingertips.

A beeping system so you dont fall asleep is not warning you your driving to long.. Its trying to stop you from falling asleep
A beeping system so you dont fall asleep is not warning you your driving to long.. Its trying to stop you from falling asleep
Actually the system is described as a warning, it tells you to pull your car over asap. If you have driven in any recent Mercedes, they also keep beeping if you don't put your seatbelt on, there's no way to turn it off.
You made the analogy, not me. I just think putting out a warning to the players or even their friends when they play too much is not hard, very easy even and is the resposibility of the MMO designer.
The part that i don't see is why the player would bother to listen to the game when they don't listen to their body. To me it's more that people are looking for a escape goat to put the blame on. Sure it would be easy for them to implement something like that and put it in the game but I don't see how that would actually do any good. You don't forget to eat, sleep or go to the bathroom, you ignore the need... What you would need is for a system that works like a seatbelt lol. Something to restrain the user from playing after a certain amount of time.
Also, what about sex? It is a huge cause of heart attacks, diseases, relationships, offspring, hernia's, disappointments and other kinds of nastiness ...
BAN SEX NOAW! Or atleast limit it to 15 minutes of casual vanilla sex a day. No dangerous things with crazy positions, ropes, clamps and whatnot. Same with using any kind of transport; using vehicles and participating in traffic is VERY DANGEROUS.
It is our governments responsibility to make sure we don't do anything which is potentially lethal

True, the player still needs to accept they're playing too much, but I believe it would help in some cases, especially for people who don't eat and drink enough while playing. At least it's something.
