Honestly, your post barely makes sense... Are you suggesting that I'm bashing this game as some kind of defender of WoW? Here's a good piece of information for you then. I don't subscribe to any MMORPG at this point in time. The only thing Im taffing around with is DDO's tree trial. Interesting concepts but the combat is too loose for my tastes... ANYWAY -
I came to Aion after AoC and WAR with the lowest of expectations. I expected WoW with a different skin, and endgame PVP. What I got was a prettier yet shallow version Runes of Magic. It never ceases to amaze me how not even my cynical expectations can be met.

So you might not be a sub now but apparently you was in WOW if you know about WOW quests and if I want to make a sentence 50 feet long I will. So now that you aren't subscribed to any mmos at the moment and felt like trying AIon just to spam on the boards that WOW quests are more credible than Aion's ? I think anything you post about Aion has no credibility whatsoever and really has no point.
I can honestly say that after playing my asmodean to level 6 I am already bored of the game. This is very bad - first the graphics aren't that great, sure the characters look good, but why are all the monsters so cuddly and cute and why can't I increase the graphics more? That alone is an immersion breaker, second why are these goblins or whatever such a threat to the population? No explanation given, and they aren't even aggro meaning I don't get the feeling they are a threat to anyone. I went in with pretty low expectations and even those expectations weren't met. This is a wow light with prettier graphics Even lotro (which I quit after 1 week) gave me more immersion even though I hated the combat in lotro. Things I find positive about Aion - Character movement is smooth (much smoother than lotro) almost as smooth as wow, this is the first game since WoW I have felt this. - The Map is good, easy to find what you are looking for. Negative things - No real explanation given why I'm doing all these errands for random idiots. I don't get a sense of progression from doing these meaningless tasks. - No sense of danger and no sense of being in a world (I'm confined to a road) - I have seen this gameplay 100x before, why would I play the same game again? Especially when there is a more polished game around the corner (which I probably will not play again)
If you don't read reviews from people past the beginner areas, that's up to you. But it's been said time and time again that the starter areas are linear. After the starter areas, you're not restricted and confined to the road, or around it. The zones are open just like any other MMO.
And yes, you've seen this gameplay 100x before. But, it's sad to say that every MMO coming out is going to be using the same concept with different touches. Look at the upcoming titles. It's been said over and over by Aion supporters that Aion is innovative, but the later gameplay is quite polished, something most of the games that offer the same gameplay you've seen 100x can't offer.
while i may think starter areas can help to give a good starter impression for new players. if they arent OMG gorgeous or breathtaking i wont let that turn me off on a game, ive been following Aion hardly because i was hoping for spiffy starter areas. it looks fun, good char creation(which is a big draw for me) on top of fun basic attack animations, even better skill/spell animations. the wing options. and the alll around graphical art style present. im hoping to enjoy aion, and if i grow tired of the starter areas ill just relocate myself elsewhere for my adventuring ^^
ps. im not really sure id call the lack of seperate towns for ALL races on WoW lazy, maybe if they just slapped in em, but (and correct me if im wrong as im a lil rusty on my warcraft lore, been awhile) but i thought they had incorporated lore elements as to why certain races shared towns with the others. thus i dont think its so much laziness because there is a story as to why.

had not really thought about what you posted and I highlighted but it is very true. It is really very reminiscent of Age of Conan and Warhammer. There is very little exploration and everything (up to the point where I am at in both factions) is linear to a fault. You might have an area away from the road but no real areas to explore, no huge zones that open up for massive exploration. There are plenty of positives and negatives about the game and a lot I like and do not like but I think the most frustrating aspect is this lack of exploration. I prefer a giant world that I can run around in and other games have that. What is it lately with these linear, path laid out before you with little deviation from it games? It's getting quite frustrating to be honest. Where are the large open worlds of DAOC, SWG, EQ, etc.....?
Should cycle through the other zones on the map. The Aion zones are freaking massive. I just think of the first zones for both sides as like a "Nub Island" you do 1-9, learn the basics, do your wing quest, select your class and start your journey.
EDIT: It gets fantastic after you get your wings and select your final class imo. Thats at 10 and your off the stupid first little area.
EDIT EDIT: First areas in every game are horrible if you've played more then 2 MMOs. Same basics for new MMO players. Tauren starter area in WoW made me wanna punch an infint. Wait, I take that back.. Not all starter areas..
And to be completely honest, complain about WOW all you want - so far this game makes WOW look hard. I love the built in Quest helper (ala Warhammer and now LOTRO). At least in WOW its an addon. And at least in WOW you had different starting areas and quests for the different factions as well.
So, number of starter locations make or break a game? An area you spend 15-20 minutes in tops?
Besides that, the only reason WOW has so many starter areas is because there are so many races. Notice the laziness to not even create a capital city for trolls or gnomes, making them share with orcs and dwarves. At least there was no half-ass attempts in creating the starter areas, they're all there in Aion.
You can find all the reasons to complain in the world, but at the end of the day, even if the starter area sucks, which I personally didn't mind, you'll be out of there to more diverse and robust landscapes in 10 levels.

Reading these posts make me feel better about my download problems..
I was debating the quality of this game from the get go, but wanted to give it a fair shake despite the bad reviews. I like asian games. I love JRPG's so I thought I might like this.
From the videos it looks like several existing f2p korean mmos tossed into one.
Well I did the gamestop preorder, and have been trying to download the blasted game all week. I normally don't have issues with this. Did it for Conan (which was a MUCH larger download), did it for WoW several times, and did it for Darkfall and Warhammer and had no issues. But for some reason I cannot seem to get this game downloaded to save my life, so instead of doing what I wanted to do tonight which was test the game.. I am on these forums
However, judging from the posts.. I'm not missing out on much.

Thanks for the helpful comment, it is most appreciated. I am almost level 10 (had to take a quick break and relax because, at this point, it is mind-numbingly boring) so I am going to work to get level 10 and go from there. Correct me if I am wrong but aren't we limited to level 10 for the test? If so, can you advance to the next area and at least see it?
EDIT: And yes the Tauren starter area is horrid. To me it is the worst one in the game.
At level 9 you can start the ascention quest (Quest that gives you wings and select your class, it auto appears in your campaign tab at 9 ) Do it right away as it auto brings you to 1 xp away from 10 so you can kill 1 mob and ding 10.
And yeah after you pick your class the same NPC will lead you to the capital city were you can train your selected classes new skills and such. From there your free to explore anywhere you want, there will be quests leading you to the next XP area but the world is open at this point.
You can fill your level 10 xp bar up but can't ding 11. But you can explore all you like. Do the ascention quest, select your class and visit Pandaemonium. If you still feel blah about the game come post about it and i'll respect ya in the morning still :O
There's too much stupid here to reply to, so I'll simply say this.
First impressions do matter
Early Aion is not equal to early WoW, in that WoW's progression is and was quicker and more enjoyable due to the varying class mechanics, interesting locations and quest chains.
I'll see if I can muster enough patience to trudge to level 9 and pick my "true" class. I'm currently level 7, so it shouldnt be much longer. But I really dont expect much from game that cant even make a decent first impression.
Once again, first impressions DO matter, in games, in movies, in books, and even in life. You'd do well to remember that.
The only gripe i have about the game is too linear. If i want to level i have to go to set parts of the world from at least levels 1-20
At least in EQ each race had their own starter zone all the way up to about 20, then at about 30-40 there were about 4-5 different areas available to level
I can't believe that someone is complaining about one side being simular to the other side lol and then your only focus and exp is from 1-10...an area I spent 1 day in and havent been back to since!!
I'm questioning wether or not I want to level my Asmodian char to 27, like my Elyos char, if I have to do the same damn shit over again.
If you want to play a game designed for the mindless, that's your choice.
well I understand your concern. Ya the two areas are pretty similiar. I think the mindset of the design is that most people will choose one side over the other. so how many of you have found the "golden axe" quest drop while hunting out at the first lake? How many of you were greedy and got shafted while answering the old mans questions?

That's not exactly true. Once you reach the second zone with an Asmodian character, after you get your wings, you will run into a lot of "you can't fly here" messages and invisible walls around areas which look perfectly passable. The zone is bigger but you're also restricted in your path.
The funny thing is is that I remember AoC caught a lot of flack because of this. What's even funnier is that Aion zones are set up very similar to AoC and people treat it like it's the greatest game ever.
Now don't get me wrong, as a WoW clone MMO, Aion is a great game and one I may actually purchase, unless something better comes along, but let's face it, it is not the answer to the WoW clone burnout.

Agreed. This is also something that I found irritating when I started out. (You also have the same limits on the Elyos side.)
But this isn't bothering me anymore.
For example, in Aoc & EQ2 the zones are real immersion breakers for me. But in Aion, once I understood the lore and how the world worked I realized that teleportation and world separation was part of the world (which is not the case in the AoC world/lore). So this isn't really an issue for me anymore (the flight limits in the middle of some maps are still bugging me a little).

?
I 've heard in the abyss, there are no flying restrictions
Only thing that's bugging me while playing are the stupid voice effects from your character, the anime sounds are too grating for me (especially the female characters). I hope they change it for the NA and Europe release. Otherwise I'm having a lot of fun in the game.

Yep, we'll get English, French and German voices for release.

Yes, but the Abyss is only one part of the game.
It's like saying that since in WoW's TBC you could fly anywhere, the game has no restrictions. Which is absolutely not true because until you reach level 58 (minimum level needed for quests in TBC) you're restricted by impassable mountains.
One thing I have to give to Blizzard: not once have I ran into an invisible wall while I was leveling my characters. Having impassable mountains is one thing but having perfectly passable terrain and an invisible wall, that's like lazy.

Actually, thats been fixed with the lastest korean patch. 90% of the voices can be toggled off/on
Theres a reason why NCSoft are not calling these "beta tests" and instead calling them "beta previews". You arent testing jack. Its an advertising event to get people interested in the game.
The starter zones matter a LOT. They are the first experience you have in the game and leave a very lasting impression. Subscribers can be lost if they have a bad first impression of the game. Also, it doesnt matter that the first 9 levels are supposed to be some kind of "tutorial", the quests are bad and the zones are claustrophobic.
Another thing that can turn people off from an MMO is the community. So far Aion has a terrible community. The fanboys here feel they have to defend Aion from any percieved attack but they are doing more harm than good. The OP makes a point that the starter areas for the 2 factions are similar and it turns into this? Really? The fanboys have to turn something like this into a flame war? What do you think a prospective subscriber will think about the community if they saw this kind of behavior?
What I find funny is that the fanboy ragers are missing that the OP has a level 27 character which means he's probably playing the Chinese version. That means he's seen more of the game than they have if they have played it at all.
Im still on the fence about Aion, it looks like a decent MMO but there are problems(and of course, in saying that the fanboys will label me a "troll").

Which brings up my next question. If this is a beta test and Koreans are playing with version 1.2 and 1.2 is the version that we are supposed to get, why are we testing the same version 1.02 as on the Chinese servers?

It is quite possible that 1.02 needs to be ironed out before 1.2 gets implemented.

So this isn't really an issue for me anymore (the flight limits in the middle of some maps are still bugging me a little).
