Second beta event. How's it going?

injurerinjurer Member Posts: 27

What's your opinion about the second beta event? Did you have problems with it? I really like the game, so even I see that not everything is working quite good, I'll continue playing it.

The first problem I had, was that it was almost impossible to connect to EU server immediately after the event launched. Also today I was forced to be disconnected several times, for sure not because of my connection but again server problems. The last thing I saw was that there are many mistakes in the dialogues, like one person name written in several different names, or other small writing errors.

So tell me what you think about the event! How's it going with you?

Very smooth.  No crashes, no disconnects.  I was experiencing a little bit of lag when the servers came online Friday but I changed to a different channel and it smoothed out, haven't had a problem since then.

Didn't have any major problems and enjoyed the changes.

This continues to be my most smooth MMO experience up-to-date (and this is just the second NA Closed Beta). Yet we had this idea that new MMOs always have a lot of problems or feel a lot incomplete because of some recent MMO releases.

Good game not great yet has potential, remined me of GuildWars somewhat, needs work on crafting and housing. I am going to play it for at least a month at release.

Anyone logging in to the servers from outside of north america? How is the lag? Obviously we are not seeing it here. Curious if you all are seeing much?

Since I tend to play later at night I often log into European servers. Just wondering what type of lag I may see.

I think the real test of lag will come when some legitimately large (300+ players) battles are fought.  That's probably not going to happen with this beta event, unfortunately.

Which is unfortunate because, if memory serves me well, we always get worked up about these large "promised" battles in games and then when we get to experience them in the final version of a game, it's almost always a let-down; mainly due to technological issues.

Indeed.  I'm starting to wonder if the overall technology (client, server, internet, etc) just isn't really there yet to make these things happen, at least with anything better than stick figures.

I hope it works better, but for some of the claims, I still have yet to see a video of truly massive battles, of the type I've heard NCSoft people talk about.  I'm not saying Aion can't do it, but I will believe it when I see it.

I am playing on the US servers from Europe. It's going great, zero lag, zero connection problems.

A quick search on YouTube brought up a few relevant clips:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTdOJnujby0 - Low resolution, PvP between Asmodians and Eloys in the Abyss. Its always hard to get actual counts for movies, but I'm pretty sure thats well over 50 people in combat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgnAw-982LM - Really, really blocky and sped up too so its not possible to see much except a sea of name tags. Definately far more people here than in the previous video though.

I'll also note that Lineage II has been doing massive several hundred people sieges for years now. I don't think Aion would have been able to do so well in Korea without living up to that part.

The thing thats really stopped me from being excited aboit Aion is what i hear about character building.  Have i heard correctly that you are not able to increase skills/stats at all?

Eventhough most new games automatically add character statistics for you, as boring as that is, they at least offer skill points or achievements as something for me to take an active role in the strengths/weaknesses of my character.  Im not sure i would be ok with a game where (aside from upgraded equipment) a mage is a mage and a warrior is a warrior....

It seems that people are really afraid of not having the best build, where for me, if you cant fck up your character its just not complext enough.  I love messing with stats/skills/achievements even if its costly to respec.

Am i in the minorty now, a dying breed of players who liked the fact that you had to really reserch your class and do a fair amount of ingame experementing to get the build you want just right?

My hope is that this isnt true, that Aion offers some sort of character building complexity.  If not, is this just due to beta, or will this be a cookie cutter character game?

There is a lot of customization available when you add in Manastones, enchants and stigma's. It might not be as customizable as you want but it adds to balance. The less you can do with your character the less overpowered it can be.

As someone who has played plenty of MMOs, I found Aion's PvE to be simple, straight-forward, and boring. "Go there, now go there, now kill 4 of these, now gather 5 of these." It wouldn't be as bad if the quest descriptions and dialog didn't make me feel like I was playing a game for people with a reading level of middle school. It would also be cool if they expanded on their lore instead of just saying "This bug has a shiny tail." or whatever.

Keep in mind that this is the second CB from severals CB/OB to come along the time till the release. Alot of changes are made in version 1.1 and 1.2 also 1.3. So just enjoy your CB time and I am sure they will change alot in the text description and in other points in this CB - Release time ;)

Let's just be happy that there are NOT MAJOR bugs, like in other games when they first release them.

Thanks for the videos.  They're nice, but they still don't show 300+ characters in a fairly small area - if you pause and count, what looks like a massive number of people is actually about 60-80 characters.

I'm still concerned about truly massive battles and how they'll run.

Given that, they're adding a couple more Stigma slots, and adding higher grade Stigma.

While these should improve character building and development somewhat, it still doesn't appear that building widely diverse characters with the existing classes is a strong part of Aion, perhaps by design.

Many list the lack of character variability as a strength for balancing the classes, and the sides, which indeed it should be.  Still, you can't have it both ways - either they are limited for the sake of balance, or given wide and diverse skillsets that will certainly make balancing much more difficult if not impossible.  Which do you think it is?

From what I've seen so far, the character classes are pretty limited in how they can be built, and the roles they can play.

To be blunt, Aion has a better performance with 80 people on screen than any other MMORPG in the last 5 years, including WoW (who just had to turn their open PvP area into a limited instance, hahahaha), so maybe it ll break when there are 200+, but its still miles and heaps better than anything else on the market. I mean, most games are unplayable at anything beyond 60, and Aion doesnt even seem to notice twice that number.

Plus, let's be realist here. If your screen could fit 300+ people on screen. Would you really want to see that amount? Actually scratch that. Do you think you would actually see your character? That's just an insane number of people, and we are playing MMORPG's, not war simulators. This doesn't mean it won't happen in Aion, becuase I have heard of quite a huge number battling in the Abyss on the CH servers. But it just seems like people want this huge ridiculous number to fight battles. I understand people want to see these massive battles, but at what cost? Zerging? Anyways, I could careless about the amount. In DaoC, my guild could easily take out zerg guilds back in the day with less than 50 and hold down towers and keeps. You could have a million people, but what's the use if those million can't follow orders. It's a lot easier to command a small group and get them to listen then to control 150+ people in a huge guild.

Much better numbers on that one.  Even taking the fraps into account, it's not exactly the "totally lag-free" massive combat a small few here have been claiming - quite a bit of hitch and staccato actions instead of the inherent smoothness the game has under normal circumstances - but still it isn't too bad.

    Thanks for the vid.

It's somewhat important because that's been one of the big selling points for this game - massive battles.  Though much isn't known about the entire game, RvR (with massive battles) is postulated to be a very significant part of endgame, which is important in a game of this type.

Like you, I also enjoy smaller battles, but I enjoy larger ones too.  I've already participated in battles that were 200-300+ (not in Aion, obviously) so have an idea of how it plays.  And yes, you can see your character.
