I see this time and time again in new MMO's over the past few years: they break the time-honored fantasy convention that you start as a humble adventurer and work your way into being a hero. Instead, these MMO's introduce some strange and/or powerful funky game concept such as flying or controlling a team of characters or twitch play and it destroys the game.
Low level characters sprouting wings might be cool in Korea, but it will fail in North America. I predict this game to have a spiked launch, then quickly subside, and I base my opinion on AION's choice to engineer universal angel-wing flight into the game. Despite some folks' ideas that "anything goes" in fantasy, most North American fantasy players are quite conventional (i.e., Tolkienesque, Camelot, Conan, etc...) Everyone flying is just strange.

I don't understand? Why is flight fail?
Yes, because flying mounts ruined WoW, and nobody plays that anymore.
Why the hell was this thread even created, honestly? Go troll elsewhere. If you dont like the game, don't play it.
Oh and you do understand that the 2 races in the game are supposed to have wings. Going from a scrub to a hero still applies to the game. You don't instantly become awesome just because you have wings. Do you think a chick can take on a full grown eagle just because it has wings? Doesn't make sense.
You might want to learn what fantasy is. Nothing is wrong with wings. Just because the novels you named didn't consider them doesn't mean they should be written out. Your thoery is based on your opinon as I am an American and I think wings fit in the fantasy mold. Your "most NA fantasy players" won't agree with your statement, because you don't know most of them. Quit making such genralized statements when infact all your trying to do is state your opinion. It might come off better. Thanks though for making me laugh, time honored fantasy convention, lol.
The whole flying thing sounds pretty cool in my book. It was one of my favorite things in WoW to be honest. I love flight, very cool.

The following statement is false

Success isn't dependent upon the western hemisphere when it's an international game. I don't plan on playing myself for other reasons but that's no reason to post negatively.
You haven't read much into the literature and folklore that a lot of that "Westernized" fantasy was written from, have you? Hear of Icarus? Perhaps the Monkey King? What about the Eldar of Tolkien? Or perhaps the many merlin myths of Camelot? Or, I dare say, the Bible? Not every North American is of euro descent either. You really shouldn't generalize your trolling like this. It makes you look more bigoted and ignorant than you might actually be. Just because you grew up on D&D in your mom's basement (with fairies, and harpies- oh my!), and don't know any better, doesn't mean that every North American is so myopic.

"Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it," Double Fine President Tim Schafer said. "Oh great, now Beyonce is going to sue me too."
Flight is actually pretty fun in Aion. You don't use/need it all the time, but when you do it's great.
I had to chuckle at this. Flying is really the ONLY thing Aion has to set it apart from any other game. Yes, that will make or break the game, but by being fun and useful or not, not because it's "just strange".If you knew anything about Aion's lore, you are a "chosen" one, an immortal, born to defend your people. That is why you fly, you are a demi-god. Really nothing very strange about it. And frankly, the flying is fun. Not so sure about the rest of the game.
I don't think NA players will have any problem withflying. Most people can stretch their imaginations, especially gamers. And some people are sick of the formula of starting as a nobody with a sharp stick. Some people want to feel like a hero from Day1. And there are games that will cater to both, some will be successful, some will not. Sounds like you want every fantasy game to be exactly the same. And I find that humorous.
I don't see how flying in a game based around Angels and Demons could possibly be considered fail.
Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV
I don't know I kinda like those idea, really...
I space MMO that plays like Eve (control/combat wise) with multiple ships (RTS style basically) where you are playing the commander of you own fleet or fighter squad would be awesome. (If done right)
Think Homeworld on a grander scale.
A Final Fantasy Style (like FFVII not FFXI) you you have a group of toons you control semi-turn based would also be refreshing just for trying something different.
While flying does play a very important roll in the game it is not what it is all about. The game has a very good fantasy feel to it in the normal play. Cast spells beat up on monsters do quests etc. They added the flying to the game and it actually works with the story and the gameplay. The hardest thing players will have trouble with is getting used to the fact that the world is no longer on a flat plane, you have to look up because there might be something above you to attack or that you can only get to with flying. On more than one quest I found myself going in circles trying to find the quest npcs or mobs till I remembered "oh yeah I can fly" and bothered to look up. Just because it is a new concept for the game does not mean it is breaking away from traditional fantasy. It is just taking the next step in our gaming worlds and making them more three dimentional.
Obvious troll is obvious. Just take a look at his damn nick.
By conventional you mean boring and unimaginative, and no not everyone in America is a mass produced robot. Just the pop stars.

You will find other ways to distinguish your greatness from those of the common folks. It just won't be flight.
Troll
but honesty I feel this game GFX are kinda dated... old BS engine... lol.. Crytek One... wondering if they are going to keep it like that old. or going to move into the third generation of that engine.... by the way thanks for choosing one of the most troublesome engines in the world...
I don't know, they seem to work with the engine quite well. It seems to handle tons of players with surprisingly minimal lag, it's stable and the developers were able to make a very nice looking package. The graphics seem dated in screenshots but if you actually look at the world the detail is amazing. The world is alive, with bugs, critters, weather, characters interacting with the environment.
That or maybe you should update your graphics card because it really doesn't look bad on my 21" monitor.
Most of the posts which are hateful could be taken right from AOC, Vanguard, WAR, and a series of other games who had their fanbois defenders, which tried to be "innovative", and which failed as a result. Well, we will wait and see how things turn out wtih this game.
I don't know what game you're looking at but if you think Aion looks dated then you need a new card or something.
All of the models and world environment look about on par with Crysis on high settings in dx9. Which to be quite honest is amazing considering how well the client handles fairly large numbers of entities.
Aion isn't trying to innovate anything. They have said this many, many times. I don't get where people are getting the idea that Aion has claimed to be anyhthing outside the box from.
Almost every single release about what Aion is from NCsoft says that they set out to create a traditional RPG with some modern elements. The game would have a strong focus on story, but also have a new way of approaching PvP with the RvMvR setup and fortress control.
NCsoft themselves have never, to my knowledge, said Aion is innovating anything new, just bringing back traditional RPG action with some new twists.
RPG? Aion is an MMO.
I just read some of your post history. You don't like being the 'hero', go play Ryzom. Seriously you'll never, ever feel like a hero there trust me and I'm not saying that in bad way that's just how it is in that game.
The lore of Aion isn't just that you get wings, you are an elite warrior who's lost their memory and in your journey you eventually get surrounded by other elites. Now in my book that's not exactly special or making everyone into a super powered hero at all, sure you are more powerful compared to normal humans and you can't die BUT you are a dime in a dozen as well.
It's like that line from The Incredibles: "If everyone's super, then no one is"
It's a matter of perspective really.

The game is about more than flying. The characters are about being a daeva. It works and is very fun and feels fresh to me. As you level you open up greater flying time and different wings.
So I disagree.
