Not getting what all the hype is about

TaramTaram Member CommonPosts: 1,700

Played it in two of the stress test weekends now.

Still not sure what all the hype is about.  It's really nothing groundbreaking or earth shattering.  Graphics & Effects are decent.  Beyond that it's pretty standard Class/Level grind fare with nothing all that impressive to recommend it.  There are F2P's that are better and more innovative (Runes of Magic is actually more fun).

It's decent enough but I wouldn't pay a monthly for it.

You tend to find that many of the P2P MMO's can not always seem so perfect remember that its only just coming out of the beta stages, personally i believe its always better to wait a while and then go back to the game 3 - 4 months after it has been released. Many of the issues with the game gets rectified and the quality improves.

I am not a fan of the combat system so much in the game (W - increases attack) (A, D - Increases dodge) (S - increases defence) I cant see how well that will play out in the later stages of the game. The point of the graphics is not that they are amazing here but if you look at the minimum/reccomended specs for the game you will see that the graphics are actualyl quite good for how little it requires.

There is a reason people from your past did not make it to your future.

Not getting why this comment needed a new thread either.

    what "hype?"

Outside of your opinion about the graphics,VERY FEW gamers have presented this game as "groundbreaking" or "earth shattering."  It is disingenuous and borderline trolling when people keep posting this like it's something we didn't already know.

In fact, if you were to get people to present their take on the game (both prior to playing it and after), most will say something like "polished, but nothing mind-blowing."  I have seen variations of that very phrase in countless positive posts about Aion, and clearly it's in yours (but what's weird about the negative posts like yours, it seems all of you were thinking the game was going to reinvent the wheel for some reason... though I still can't figure out what put that idea your crazy little heads...). ;^_^

Most of the positive experiences that people are posting about don't strike me as hype.  They are just feedback by gamers sharing what is genuine enjoyment, and also disappointment about some of the features.  Admittedly, I've seen a few overly enthusiastic posts where people clearly have "MMO fever" and are way too positive (probably which will turn to despair when some of the flaws do become unavoidable and they have to reconcile their blind faith with reality).  Still, by and large, even several of the most rabid fans are aware of its limitations and present it as such.

What is most definitely NOT earth shattering or ground breaking, however, is post after post of people talking about Aion's "run of the mill/standard" features as if they are shocked by it and it's news to them, or the world.  Some are even ASTOUNDED TO NO END I TELL YOU!!! that Aion doesn't set a new benchmark for all games that will follow it.... But, of course, none of YOU ever promised to be ground breaking or earth shattering in everything you post here, either.  Yet, unlike you, I won't complain about people not doing something that they didn't promise to do in the first place.  I don't expect things that were never promised and then act miffed when I don't them.

And please don't cite NCsoft marketing literature as "hype."  Any adult with half a brain knows that advertisements and press releases are always going to call a game "groundbreaking" or "revolutionary" because that's just the business world.  When you sell product, there is the everyday marketing/hype that we all just know is hot air, and then there is the actual lying/false "hype" that many devs and gaming companies are notorious for (e.g., AV, Tasos, and the whole DF debacle).

It's clear to anybody who has been following the game, even passively, Aion was not "hyped" in the way that is dishonest and unfair.  Sure, NCSoft played up the game's positive sides (what company wouldn't?), but with so many videos posted on youtube and tons of forum discussion about the game before this point, it was clear what to expect.

You are either trolling or were very out of the loop.... And I just wanted to respond once to the use of this OMFG-you-won't-believe-this!-Aion's-not-earth-shattering-and totally-revolutionary! "outrage" and "shock" found in many of the negative posts.

  • rwmillerrwmiller Member Posts: 472

Yep, if you are looking for something that is completely original and ground breaking then you will be disappointed in Aion.

Also, you will be disappointed in every single game that is currently on the release list here at MMORPG as they all are also not original or ground breaking.

Though if you are creating a swords and magic fantasy game you almost by definition are limiting your options. I guess they could add in laser wielding snakes that ride motorcycles with sidecars containing nude female space aliens (triple breasted) throwing exploding marshmallow puffs but sort of hard to fit that into any sort of lore. 8-)

In Aion's defense, and I am playing Beta too, it is quite fresh, the quest are fun the graphics very "pretty" and decent for a Beta. The most stable beta I have played in ages. Granted that is does seem the norm......kill this, deliver that....but we've only been able to play up to level 20 really (I have not played chinese beta), so there is not a huge amount of 1st hand information to form a complete opinion.

One thing that I have seen across these boards over and over is the "grind" word..... I got to level 20 with unfinished quests :/ I simply don't get what people are doing.....If I want to rush to level 20 I would probably grind non-stop. But the point of a Beta is to test the game? So I am reading every line of the quests, I am checking spelling (even though my native language is Portuguese I think I have been living in the UK enough time to see if a spelling mistake is present or a phrase doesn't make sense), I am taking my time to actually do what the Devs have asked of us.

If I am not getting the hype or not, I don't really care. It is a very good game so far, very stable for a Beta and I am happy to play it and pay for it as long as it keeps me entretained :)

In all fairness I have NEVER played a single mmo that has lived up to the hype over the past years and i've tried most of em and left them.

Im in the Aion beta and I really enjoy it, I like the  PvP and crafting alot, most other mmos has really really crappy  unrevvarding crafting, only other games that i played and liked the crafting in vvas eq2 and horizons, sure  it vvas a grind but it vvas vvorth it, and if you dont vvanna do the craft grind then dont!

too add, you can NOT judge aion over the first 20 level's wait till cbt4 till ya can atleast have a slightly fair judgement over it when ya  can reach the abyss aswell (atleast, that is where alot of endgame appears to be)

Keep posting these threads.  Just mentioning the game will get more people interested in it.  They see the arguments and want to know what this game is about, so they will play it.  Thanks for guaranteeing the servers will be full when I play the game in September.

Some people actually play a bit more to form a honest opinion....but kudos for the most elaborate opinion of the game I have seen so far in these boards

I dont know what the hype about WoW is either, and yet its the best selling MMO.

If your underwhelmed then chances are you havnt really experienced much of the game yet,  the first 20odd levels are very similar to any mmo.   But thats a good thing, MMO's which try to be different usually fail.

Besides, Im a person who loves visuals... and for me Aion visuals are sublime.

No one said it was. All Aion fans know for fact that AION is not innovative its just a very polished and quality game.
  • patrikd23patrikd23 Member UncommonPosts: 1,155

If you are not stunned by the visuals in Aion, you just need a new computer plain and simple. Something new? Yes first released mmo game with Cryengine, and that is a fact.

OP the reason you see all the Hype is the Fanbois wanting it to be the next WoW and deep down knowing its nothing ground breaking and will do ok but not great.

Always this crap about "groundbreaking" and "revolutionary".

It would be the same to go to a soccer match and go shout that the rules are still the same after all those years. Get over it, it's soccer! Why does everything need to change all the time? If you have a good set of rules and mechanics it doesn't need to change. Soccer will always be soccer, tennis will always be tennis. There doesn't have to be a revolution to make it more interesting to the public.

If you always water down everything in simple sentences you will always be disappointed. Like tennis for example:

You have a court with a net, two or four players, one or two on each side, and they slam a ball with rackets. Sounds really simple, and it is. And that is actually where the greatness is hidden, in the simple things.

People don't want headcrushing mechanics for video games. They want to have fun all the time, because that's what most video games are supposed to do. As far as MMORPG's go, yes there will always be a standard set of rules and mechanics. Aion has them too, as does almost every other MMORPG. Just get over the "revolutions", because you will almost always be disappointed. Some things will stay the same for almost an eternity.

I guess some people are just burned out from MMO's in general. If you play 4 hours a day for 5 years straight, yeah I get it that you no longer like a certain game or even the whole genre in general. Counter-Strike was also no more fun for me after a few years. That's how it goes. But it is not the game that isn't fun anymore, it is your brain that doesn't want the same stuff all over again. It needs some new input to make the "happy neurons" in your brain. The old stuff isn't good anymore for your "happy neurons". That is why you are waiting for this revolution and groundbreaking stuff to come out.

But you got to ask yourself: will the new stuff be enough for my brain, or does it still want more after that? This same cycle happens a LOT to drug addicts too. Be careful! Take a break!

"Not getting what all the hype is about"

Nope, you're not getting it. Most likely you will not get it at all. Good.

Hype? Where's the hype? This game needs no hype and it hasn't  been that much anyway (hint: moar hype leads to moar phail... AoC and WAR come in mind).
