Excited about AION. However, can someone name a good Korean MMO?

varriusvarrius Member Posts: 106

Everything in AION seems promising.   I am currently craving a good MMO.

WAR and AOC, the only decent MMOs out imo, are boring.

It's been a while since a revolutionary/good MMO has been released - AION seems like it may be my ticket.

I am an avid EVE-online player but I need my medieval/fantasy fix, as well.

My main concern is the massive failure that NCSoft has shown in the past years.

They've released multiple MMOs rapidly, some of which, are now closed. ( Auto Assault.  Tabula Rasa. )

I am worried that this may be another rushed MMO designed to get them a quick money fix.

Further, my main and foremost doubt about this game is that it's Korean.

What MMO can you name that is good and is Korean?

City of Heroes is not good don't even think about it.

    Lineage II was ridiculous.

It's an elitist game heavily reliant on using real-world money to be successful.

The character customization is horrible, the game play is ridiculous, the characters look like they have some sort of back disorder.

    That's a laugh.

NCSoft published(Gave them money and backing) Tabula Rasa, Guild Wars, and City of Heroes they were created by dev groups of Richard Garriott's, ArenaNet, and Cryptic.

The 2 main ones from NCSoft Korea are Lineage and Lineage 2 before Aion.  Both were very successful.  Aion is like a blend of their Lineage style with WoW and DAoC.

Lineage 1 and Lineage 2.  They've been around like forever.

Guildwars is also NCSoft's.  I wouldn't consider that one a failure.  It's not good for a company to make turn and burn games;  they know that.  They're also under new management since AA / Tabula Rasa.

No Lineage II was extremely successful.

Maybe it's not your style, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good or successful.  It had some of the best sieging and mass PvP in any MMO to date.  It did not require real world money at all.  Maybe that is way you play your game.

The character customization is horrible, the game play is ridiculous, the characters look like they have some sort of back disorder.

Char customization has been lacking in many MMO's including Lineage II.  However that is not the case with Aion as it has one of the best out there.

    That's a laugh.

You're a laugh, and you're pretty damn annoying too...

I agree with that he said. Just another person who tried a Hard Core game like Lineage 2 and did not have what it took to play it.

Guild Wars can't really be grouped in with those games, it was developed by Anet. Incidently, what is a "Korean" mmo?

Atlantica Online is one of the best MMOs I've ever played, and it's Korean. Granted the combat is turn-based instance but it's still great.

Yar thanks.  I forgot who made it, that's why I spaced it below Lineage.  Main point for that one was to show that they managed it and it did not fail like Tabula or Auto.

You might not like elitist games, that doesn't make them bad, it makes them bad for you. Lineage II is epic as long as you get into a good guild, and as long as you don't give a damn about how chars run, but how the pvp runs.

the only good pay to play korean mmo is LIneage II and well its gameplay is mostly the same as Aion. Aion has far less of a grind but they be both grinders. If you liked lineage II then you should love Aion

well i played WoW , GW,  AoC....left them awaiting this game.

I would have to say WoW was the best so far but the lack in detail, and basically the game going down in terms of raiding and pvp from Vanilla WoW - so WoW = fail for me nowadays

AoC....well i didnt like it cos there was somthing missing....dunno wot though.....

GW was awesome the times i played it.

THUS, the next best thing is going to be Aion.

I dont think that there is a single good Korean MMO, at least in my opinion. I dont like mind nubbing grind, lack of customization, microtransacton, bots and all this stuff who plague korean games most than all (I am not talking about Aion, but OTHERS korean mmos). But its for MY taste... There are people who do call grinding as ´playing´, there are people who dont mind to customize, because it makes the game runs heavier in their system, there are people who dont mind bots or microtransacion, in fact there is people who count on that...

And the OP has asked for a GOOD korean game, not a SUCCESFULL korean game... There is a huge distance between quality and quantity...

That doesnt mean that Aion will be the every-day korean game, neither... For start, there is a huge customization... The doubt of the OP makes sense for me, who do not think (personal opinion) that the korean mmo style can be considerad a ´good´ gaming...

Personally, I think Aion will not target the korean gaming public (I hope so)...

Good is relative to each and every person's taste. No one can tell you which games are "good" or "bad", it's all opinion.

NCsoft have already stated that Aion was going to cater to both the Eastern and Western audience, and it has done so impeccably as far as I'm concerned. The only thing that links it to being a Korean MMO is the art style, other than that it beats most of the Western developed games at their own game, IMO anyway.

When did it fail the first time, it's not even released yet. And Bioware is Canadian, not from the US.

+1 to the Lineage crossed with WoW/DAoC perspective.  Unless NCS screws up endgame, gets trapped in the endless cycle of "balancing" for pvp, or can't provide sufficient content I think a lot of people who are naysaying might be surprised at just how good Aion is.  I'm not a particularly big fan of WoW, but Aion's gameplay & backstory really isn't that different.

Guild Wars is technically a Korean mmo and most would agree it's not half bad and is indisputably successful, even in the west.

The international community likes to lump us together. Anyway I immensely enjoyed Lineage 2, I will admit it was a waste of time until I smartened up and started playing private servers. Lineage 2 would have been more successful if it wasn't such a grind.

For the most part Lineage 2 is/was a good game in terms of quality and L1/L2 were the highest subbed games world wide until WoW took over. NCSoft probably holds more marketshare in the MMO genre than any other company when you combine Aion, L1, L2 and CoX. While Guild Wars is on another pay model it is also a huge favourite among MMO fans. Sure some of these games weren't developed by NCSoft specifically but they are all quality titles. They have had failures in the past but it was for the most part when they tried to experiment and add something new to the MMO genre (AutoAssault + Tabula Rasa). You can't blame NCSoft for taking a step back and making a safe title, they've earned it.

the only thing it beat is WAR and AOC at pvp which i can say it does. However i really dislike the grind and lack of quests at later levels but its still a very well done game.

Aion is revoluationary?  What about it is revoluationary?

I agree "revolutionary" might be hyperbole, but the flying mechanic is certainly at least evolutionary.  No other mmorpg has ever added a y-axis to the movement plane, but I bet they will now.

Gonna have to disagree about GW being a Korean mmo, the developers are in Washington. Heck even NC West (whom ArenaNet reports to) is based in Washington. There is nothing Korean about the game. The Lineage series are the ones I think of that are "Korean".

From what im hearing form this last weekend, the best Korean mmo out there now is what the North Koreans are doing over the internet.
