To the OP, thanks for the heads up. Even after the mess nearly a year ago, I still havn't recovered from being massively disapointed in FunCom , their developers and especially their GMs and Community Manager. I had entertained the thought of reinstalling and giving the 14days a shot. But eh... unless FunCom had a huge staff reshuffle, I couldn't possibly imagine that it would be a positive gaming environment.
Avery, you have any news on FC staff? Did they ever purge , and hire decent and honest GMs? Back when I left, GMs were openly having cyber with the players, defeating bosses for guild raids, insta killing people for their friends, etc... Not to mention the whole pvp armor issue.
What has FC done to correct these issues? Or has it all been "we added this, we changed that" with game mechanics only? If thats the case, there is no way in hell I'd toss a dime back into that company.
AoC has improved dramatically! it seems that this is not the game for you but for those who did like it and thought that it had potential at launch come back and try it again do the 14 day trial thing and give it a shot
Please do tell how the game has improved dramatically. I played at launch and got to 80 after like 10 days, but I quit around day 15, because there was simply nothing to do.
I came back for the free 14 days, only to discover that nothing at all had changed. They added 2 solo instances, fixed the raids that were bugged at release, added PvP levels, and nerfed gem stacking. That's what they have done. It took them 1 year to do that?

Yes that is the problem here.... Funcom never tells you that you will be instantly charged $12 when you do the special upgrade package. When they should charge you after your free 14 days are up. Once again Funcom making a dirty dollar
The special upgrade package is the ingame item and discount on subs right? If so and you choose it then you will pay for it. You don't want go into a store and ask to get one of their discount wares and not pay for it do you? :P
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC) On my radar: TSW, MO MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
It just blows my mind that this game has been out for a year and they can't BALANCE CLASSES in a PVP game. FFS they didn't even add in new classes cuz if they did then i could see their class unbalancing issues. But to have the same classes for a year and not even be close to balanced..... pathetic Call me crazy but i think that is a little important fix
WoW has been out 4 years, guess what class balance is still fubar there
Balancing in a class based game is close to impossible. You can achieve it, but the game will be dead boring to play as all classes will lack the things that makes them interesting. Look at SWG CU, the closest thing I have seen to a decent class balance. The problem however all that made the different classes fun before was removed.

Wasn't this addressed, explained and rectified? Personally didn't have the problem myself (i usually buy gamecards, rather than use a cc) this happens a lot and not in just AOC, plus not only by funcom. I've heard it quite a bit in regard to SOE games even cases from wow. I just have to wonder how many times it's an actual issue with the company and how many times it's user error (or a bank). How many people actually come back after such comments and address what happened in the end? Especially when they find in the end it was either a bank retainer, or they simply forgot to unsub and thought they did.
As for the issue in this case, is it funcom who took the money or was it the bank as a retainer?
As for whether someone should try a free trial because someone else mistakenly paid to play is another issue all together. I know I had no problem I have no cc info on my account.Therefor no worries on my end, if funcom robbed you that's f'd up for sure. However how are we to know it actually happened that way? I'm sorry that the word of random forum guy # 1,000,000 isn't exactly proof that such has taken place. This is the internet after all, for all I know you could be John Smedly or even Gaute Godager(sp) playing a little bit of sabotage.
Would I be a dick if I asked to see the receipt, you know so we can be sure this isn't just a troll?

I started to download it but then I remembered that the game was total crap and canceled
I thought I would give it a try. I usually like to try a game myself, rather than taking someone else's opinion, and with a FREE trial, you can do that.
And yes, it is FREE. I had no problems, and have not been charged. Whomever posted that has some personal issues or likes to click buttons without reading.
Though this game wasn't for me, I recommend you try it. Could be the next game for you. It is FREE to try.
Just went back for the "relaunch" and not much has changed. Combat is still waaaay out of wack. The community is nothing but a bunch of bloodthirsty gankers straight out of 4chan. As soon as invuln wears off expect to have 3 people attacking you. Class balance is laughable. Class population is currently 33% Necro, 33% ranger, 33% everything else. Can you guess what the fotm classes are?? Casters just circle strafe and bunny hop non stop and its impossible to land a hit on them melee (and even if you did melee dmg is nowhere near where it should be), until their root is up. Then they just root you, run behind you, and you die. Thats melee combat in a nutshell. Necros dont even have to root you because their 10 pets just surround you and you cant move anyways. I love a hardcore PvP ruleset as much as the next guy, but this games mechanics are just crap. Oh by the way, they are charging your credit card when you register to go back for the "free" 14 days so its actually a month and 14 days for $12, not free.`
i didn't have to enter any CC info to get my 14 days free
"Your account is free of charge, and you will not be billed unless you choose to become a subscriber again after your 14 days of free re-evaluation."
It also does say a few pages after you've clicked the reactivation link in your email (The page where they are saying would you like 20% off a subscription plan) that if you would like a subscription, the 14 free days will be added after the subscription ends, other wise "click here" to proceed without a subscription.
Your account is then "Cancelled" but playable for 14 days.
It's the way Funcom words certain things that is annoying. For instance:
"Did you know that you can log in today, create a new character with the class of your choice and see that character instantly turned into a level 50? You can! This onetime offer, per account, allows you to start out a new character without going through the low levels - perfect for trying out a new class! The level 50 character is activated through character creation."
No where does it say you already need another 50 on your account (and previously an uninterrupted 6 month subscription - this was removed quite rightly to people moaning). Bearing in mind this is not for brand new players, but old subscribers, they are blatently not putting in that little bit of information (that can only be found on the forum) to shove players in the door.
I couldn't care about a level 50, and neither could most I think, people are just pissed that Funcom can't word things properly. It's borderline false advertising I think?
Either way I feel I will play, afterall Funcom just made me d/l 3gig of patches so I will want to get my time and bandwidths worth.

In the OP's defense, I did a double take at the signup page myself, because though it's not necessarily unclear it is laid out like most MMO account pages where you just sign up for a billing period. Usually these are just so recurring billing can kick in after your free week / $50 free month / etc.

The OP really needs to do his research. You CAN do the 14-days free without using a credit card. There's a line under the 20% off advertisment that says if you're not interested and just want to continue click here. Open your eyes and read next time. It also sounds like you went to a PvP server. Umm I believe ganking is a regular occurance of PvP servers. If you won't like it reroll to a normal one. As far as combat goes, it requires more thinking and strategy to hit where you're supposed to. Also the developers main concern for the past year has not been class balances for pvp but client stability and bug fixes with some added content. The game is a year old and if you play it now versus when it first released it has come a long way.
A lot of the bashers are fan boys of other mmo's most likely WoW (who by the way just lost 6 million subscriptions).

Patch 1.05 changed a lot of stuff, as Class Advocate we see many pro's and con's and discussions in this very specifc area. Just my interpretation is that overall out of all classes there seems to be a better general vibe, this is not knocking the work or ignoring the work that is needed further, as being honest there is still a ways to go. If I am new to the game or revisiting the game from last playing 10months ago I would be a betting man in that there has been change. Patch notes are a testament to this. I am not saying things are perfect so please don't take out of context. But c'mon like I said Class Balance changed a lot of things. Right around the corner is a fix for the most popular issues. As in next week.
Skill based in that a melee class has to fire off a 1-3 chain combo, and hit with every step of the combo (on a moving target) to get full potential out of my combo, while a caster has a locked target and can just spam click abilities? It a fundamentally flawed system that will never be balanced unless they cut the damage of casters in half with as much CC as they have. You cant even talk about player skill unless balance is perfect, because if not, class advantage always comes into play.
I'm not saying that there hasnt been change, but that doesnt mean the change has been for the better. I found myself having less fun in game that I did at launch. Maybe next week that will change, but then why not relaunch next week?
You will have to excuse me, but I was still wondering how long did you take to make your mind up. It would be better if you was specific. "I tried the trial for 1 day and found class inbalance to be an issue" just doesn't cut it.
When you have vets who are justing coming to terms with the recent balance patch posting some findings and then we have someone fresh in less that 24 with full on declaration that nothing has changed is pretty strange for me to read.
You have some such generalised statements and no meat to back up. What do you say to the guy that left because he thinks you can't strafe anymore, and you have issues hitting people that do?
I am sorry but there are 2 weeks to re-evaluate. Doing it in less than a day, isn't doing the experience justice or the weak argument that nothing has changed. Having the secondary point of being charged when you don't need to enter in CC info is just there to try and strengthen weak propositions.
If you was to come and say this and this is why I think the balance is off, because of this and this, and this is what is happening and so on then that is good. To moan that you can't hit someone, when all the other posts around are saying the game slowed down and fights are longer doesn't make sense does it. I am confused how there can be one bunch of people leaving who are saying the opposite of what you say. How is one to understand.
Melee has charge ability which has changed, changed the effect for the recipinent. Gear stats and feats have changed, are you re-joining on an older specced character, what level and class are you basing your opinion off?
As a person retrying the free 14 day offer let me see if I can reiterate what people might be trying to say:
In a word: irrelevant
This game simply does not feel relevant anymore. You only have to play for a hour to understand that. Yes this game is probably launch worthy as of now. But too much time has passed. We will soon be opening the flood gates to a host of new mmorpgs that will strip AoC of all but the very hardcore. Even if that wasn't the case, I can tell you that with the anemic population; this game just doesn't seem like a viable choice by the current standards.
AoC really isn't a factor anymore and will matter even less about 6 months from now.
I would say nice try Funcom.....but it really wasn't. Quite lame actually.
I did the 7 day trial and found it worth checking out. I have been playing mmo's a long time and love to play a game if only for a short time to see how it looks and feels. Although the game looked great it just did not have some elements I like to see in mmo's to hook me. Try it for yourself, start the download and plan a bit time to give it a good evaluation.
The OP is obviously not a Conan fan, if you retried and didn't like it good for you but you didn't post any good information in your post about the actual changes made to the game. A Relaunch is exactly what Conan needs, and why not now while its still fresh (thats right Conan is a very young, and beautiful, mmo). DX10 puts this games graphics on its own level, and even without it it's hard to find a game that comes close to this one's visuals. Seiges work now and are a ton of fun, city building is alive and well also. There has been a ton of content added to make leveling much easier and smoother as well as a few new areas to explore that weren't available at launch. Now with the good, also there is some bad. Sure, casters are a little overpowered, big whoop they will get fixed and life will go on. This game actually does a great job fixing things and they put out there patches pretty quick, and anybody who has followed this game or knows anything about it would know that Funcom has done a helluva job getting this game back on track. You don't have to like it, but give credit where credit is due, and there is a reason that they are turning a profit now. Now for my personal opinion- The fact you couldn't do any damge to casters is quite funny to me because once you catch em they are meat. Also, I'd advise against a PVP server because your not hardcore pvp, sorry. The combat in this game is more challenging than your normal game, especially in PVP because doing the same exact thing everytime will not work. You sound like more of a click click click type of guy, no thinking in there. I'd advise WoW or perhaps its free counterpart RoM. Either will fill you up.
You do realise OP at the bottom of the advertisement screen you get after activating your 14days free that talks about the dicount ect there is a link that says "click here if you want to continue and not subscribe" right? right? eh
Oh by the way, they are charging your credit card when you register to go back for the "free" 14 days so its actually a month and 14 days for $12, not free.`
That is interesting because it says in the mail:
"..Your account is free of charge, and you will not be billed unless you choose to become a subscriber again after your 14 days of free re-evaluation. You will not be automatically billed at the end of this period."
And yet you are saying they do charge you? That's Funcom for you...
Too many core issues with this game, game mechanics (combat system, PvP system, exploits ect) and instancing. It's been a year and what has been done? Cosmetic changes, added some content and fixed a few instances all other changes have been failures in my opinion. As stated before a combat system where melee has to manually target and mash buttons in the right order whilst keeping the target in the crosshairs vs casters that lock and just press keys to fire off attacks = fail. they can try and balance it as much as they please but it's the core mechanics that bring it down not the cosmetic mechanics on the surface.
After one year very little has been done to improve this game, they need to remove instances. Let lowbies join in with siege warfare, have it in an open world where everyone can watch and take part. Most people quit before even seeing a siege, why turn one of the main draws to the game into an instanced club?
Combat is silly, it's a ridiculous button mash fest that becomes tedious very quickly. I leveled a DT and Demo to 80 and the Demo was the best because of the reduced hassle of melee mash fests.
The PvP system is tedious and a watered down shadow of what was hyped at launched.
Most of all instancing has killed this game, from launch to now it haunts AoC like the ghosts of Christmass past. present and future haunted Scrooge. I suffered the memory leaks, the button mashing, the mind numbing resource gathering, the frustratingly broken crafting, the exploitable siege warfare and the lack of features hyped before launch. The one thing that really chased me away was instancing, I was paying for a CORPG that wasn't very good. One year later I still see an inferior overpriced and unpopular version of Guildwars.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

Yeah. They are giving you an option to subscribe to the game to a discount when you activate your 14d trial.
But I guess this large image is not clear enough so people go on and add a subscription.
"If you do not wish to accept this offer and continue to download the game client click here."

You do realise OP at the bottom of the advertisement screen you get after activating your 14days free that talks about the dicount ect there is a link that says "click here if you want to continue and not subscribe" right? right? eh
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
That is interesting because it says in the mail:
"..Your account is free of charge, and you will not be billed unless you choose to become a subscriber again after your 14 days of free re-evaluation. You will not be automatically billed at the end of this period."
And yet you are saying they do charge you? That's Funcom for you...
My gaming blog

Yeah. They are giving you an option to subscribe to the game to a discount when you activate your 14d trial.
But I guess this large image is not clear enough so people go on and add a subscription.
"If you do not wish to accept this offer and continue to download the game client click here."

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
