The Term "WoW killer" is used for the release of practically every game.  Nothing can kill WoW, it is simply to big and bloated to die.

If you're real lucky, the moon is full, and the stars are aligned, SW:ToR may manage to cripple SWG. But kill WoW, or any other game for that matter? Splash some cold water in your face, bro. You're dreaming.

Reason 2: This game will revolutionize MMOs because you will not feel like you are grinding, and the quests(called missions in The Old Republic)will not be like, "Go and kill 10 acklays" or "Collect one krayt dragon hide." The missions will be like, "Go slice into the computer to take over the ship."
Reason 3: Several gaming sites have already written reviews on this game, and they are all good. One site even states,"As the force-choked trooper slides across the ground, clutching is neck, it becomes obvious; this game is a WoW killer."

I don't think it will defeat WoW, mainly due to it being Sci-Fi. Sci-Fi may be popular in the western community but not so much in the eastern. Out of everyone I know in person that plays WoW 5 out of 6 of them don't like the Sci-Fi style of RPG.

When it comes to RPGs, don't think anything will ever be able to replace classic sword, board, and magic.

    Probably might =p.

If you really think about it no game could ever really kill WoW. The only way it could truely die is if Blizzard shut it down. Otherwise, there will ALWAYS be people playing.

I don't understand how these people who love wow cannot accept that some day the game, like everything WILL DIE. Granted it may not be as linear as the release of another game, and we know that games can live on whilst retaining a small playerbase. However, WoW is old now, and I think as we see more and more releases it's only probable that we begin to see new concepts, or old concepts done better. IMO their subs will begin to trickle away slowly at first, but more rapidly over time. Whether ToR is the one to catalyse this process and set off a chain reaction, well, clearly many of you disagree. However one thing is surely certain, one day something will.

I am a World of Warcraft player and i accept that one day the game will die, However you have to accept that this game will not be killed by any other game it can only kill itself. This is something that the game is already doing in my own opinion the true core of the game will disappear as it is becoming World of Casualcraft not Warcraft.

There have been many changes to the game and I believe after Icecrown is released there is not going to be much else to make the game truly enjoyable. My guess for Icecrown releadse will be around the time Aion is released so they try and keep their player base when a new MMO is released with potential.

Also for the record I am looking forward to TOR and leaving any MMO i will be subscribed to for it in a flash :P

There is a reason people from your past did not make it to your future.

I agree killing itself will surely be responsible partially. But what about when funner games come out? Essentially better games overall than WoW - hard to imagine as nothing statistically has done that but something must surely come. Just out of interest what do you guys think will pull more of the WoW market, Aion, Swtor, or Blizzard's new MMO?

  • SerulithSerulith Member Posts: 92

Regardless the success of ToR, it wont come anywhere near "Dethroning" WoW. Im sure ToR will be a good MMO but people need to stop thinking that a single MMO is going to demolish WoW.

To be honest i think Aion will effect WoW subs more in the long run. Aion offers more of what the WoW crowd and many others want compared to ToR.

The more times people AND BIOWARE say ToR will "beat" WoW, the more of a letdown ToR will be to many.

Blizzards new MMO, ToR, Aion, and FFXIV

All are big name next-gen titles that make WoW look dated...well not really Aion but ToR and FFXIV, Aion has already been out for a bit over seas.

Nothing will KILL WoW, period. At least not in the next 2-3 years. Sooner people get over this the better

In my opinion Blizzards new MMO will have the biggest effect, followed by Aion and lastly ToR.

Im not saying ToR will be bad but ToR most certainly will not offer the same experience as Aion will, and Aion offers more of an experience that WoW players would prefer. Thats not a good or bad thing...just both those MMOs offer many different things that the other lacks.

Blizzards new MMO is only just the start. We have 3.2 shortly and after that Icecrown. Then after that the next expansion. See a pattern here, people love the game and aint quitting for shit.

No one slightly still interested in WoW will leave wow for any other game.

People leave WoW when they have enough of it, like any other MMO.

Thats what im trying to say.

Like it or hate it, WoW is going to continue to dominate the MMO market for many years to come.

What people need to understand that what happened with WoW, will never happen again. Well... maybe with their new MMO. Who knows.

WoW released on the right moment, the right time. Had extremely good marketing and Blizzard had a huge warcraft fanbase and a very very good trackrecord as developer.

Now years later, so many failed MMO's later. The MMO market has started to become saturated.

And seeing how people are hopping between new MMO after new MMO. It means people are getting bored and fed up with the genre sooner then later.

Developers are screwing up by keep hanging in the same old same old mold of Themepark levelbased crap.

That's why older MMO's like WoW, EverQuest2, EverQuest1, AO, UO, FFXI, LOTRO, etc, etc keep going. And why people keep returning to one of these older MMO's.

Why jumping to a new MMO if it offers nothing new and nothing different? While you got a character(s) you spend loads of time on, a guild with friends in your current MMO?

The MMO genre needs a true revolution. It needs something new and refreshing.

Unfortunately. SW: TOR isn't going to offer that either. It will be just another Themepark MMO. It will sell a lot of boxes, just like some other recent games and after 1 or 2 months it will drop fast and probably hang around 200k-300k subs. Just like the rest of the bunch.

    Cheers

K.O.T.O.R. was a horrific game, one of the most overrated piece of crap in the modern history of computer gaming. Camera controls, black and white choices, linearity, lack of classes from the rules and all classes play the same, inventory interface (actually the whole user interface was poor), and I could go on.

It was blackisle who made the RPG games (Baldur's gate 1, Planescape Torment) not Bioware. Bioware did BG1 addon which was crap and then the IWD series and NWN. I can understand console FPS players like Bioware current games (Mass effect bleh) -- that want to feel like playing an RPG, but it goes beyong me if rpg PC players enjoy that.

    REALITY CHECK

I am real tired of hearng about Possible WOW killers.  Think about it, 13million p-layers?  how can any game with that much of a player base, for this many years be killed by any one game.  WOW has been around for what? 7-10 yrs?  There will NEVER be a WOW killer.  As others have already stated, the only  a couple of ways WOW wil die. 1) Developers not staying up on things and keeping it fresh.  2) dfevelopers just giving up on it.  3) Digital orcs lvl839  ravaging the community and kiling everything in their sight.

The game will never truly die, no matter what happens with a player base of 13million, no matter what happens.  much to the dismay of those who have a blood thirsty need to see it implode.  WOW will be here for many years to come.

SW-TOR on the other hand will be a very unique game with all its new features,in depth story line, voice overs, and generally new fresh approach.  But it will cater to the Sci-fi fan base specifically.  It will indeed be somewhat ground breaking, get its HUGE base of followers.  It will crush  SW Galaxies, although SW Galaxies has hurt itself tremendously on  it's own.  I do believe SW TOR is going to be a magnificent game, far beyond anyone's imagination but WOW is a completely different genre.  I don't really see mythical fantasy players running in hordes from WOW to SWTOR, just doesn't make sense.  That being said, watch for SWTOR to get a phenominal amount of players.  It too will be around for many years to come..

If this game or Aion becomes the top then they will deal with all the same crap WoW has to deal with, have fun with that.

I made a poll in the Pub. And I thoroughly disagree. Even if these new MMOs are offering the same thing, they offer it in a different enivornment with different names etc and since they are next gen, better graphics and better mechanics that make use of technology. You're argument makes me think that you believe all these new MMOs are simply WoW clones. The thing is they will one day offer the same thing but slightly better. I mean the person who said wow will dominate for many years to come. What about in 5-10 years when playing WoW may seem like SNES graphics ? I'm not sure it can last that long.

    Anyway discuss!

  • EyrothathEyrothath Member UncommonPosts: 200

Please, seriously stop with "This game will kill World of Warcraft." WoW is already dying on its own... I have not even read the OP's thread and I am telling everyone this.. I mean sure, a lot of games are looking similar to World of Warcraft, they are trying to take after WoW's success by trying to make a game to beat it.. This is actually why all those games like Age of Conan, Warhammer, etc.. Are failing... If a company wants to take all the WoW subs then they have to move as far from WoW as you can get.. Look at EVE, the sub base is still growing they started with around 30,000 and now have around 250,000 subs..

I am sick of the "OMG, THIS GAME LOOKS LIKE WOW!" Ya it does, and that is why it will suck.. World of Warcraft sucks, I did not like the game, and I generally did not like anything that copied it..

Graphics doesn't mean jack. Just take a look at UO, AO, EQ1, AC1, FFXI, DAOC, etc.

All these games are still going and aren't going to close down any time soon. Hence, EQ1 gets another Expansion pack!

WoW wasn't really new either. It just happened to release at the right moment, at the right time, with the right features and content people liked.

On top of that. Almost litterly everyone could run the game. Even people with PC's out of the stone age.

Next Gen graphics and use of New technology means also that you exclude a massive amount of potential players. As of yet I still have to see a MMO release (after WoW) that has such scalable NextGen graphics, so people with low end system could scale it down to a level they can run the game at an acceptable level.

That's what made WoW a huge success. We can hate it or like it. That's how it is.

Not everyone is a Rage Nerd that can wave with his / her daddy's/mommy's creditcard and buys the latest hardware nor willing to do it or does feel the need to it.

I myself love fancy graphics and have a decent computer system to support it. But I accept that I am a vast minority in this and that most of the gamers are no upgrade junkies nor have the funding for it or willing to spend it!

So any new MMO releasing right now that wants to be succesful needs to offer something trully unique and different, then just fancy graphics or just a different environment.

Or people get burned out and just keep falling back to their old MMO they came from.

    Cheers
