Which MMOs are true open world MMOs? So far I can think of WoW and maybe LotRO. Definitely not a MMO like WAR where each zone is between a loading screen.
Istaria (aka Horizons) and Flyff are true open world.
WoW is not strictly open world as the major cities and different continents are in different zones. However, the lag would have been horrible if all of these were all in the same open world.
Dark Age of Camelot uses a similar system to WoW for open world.
WoW and open world, you're kidding right? L2 is open world (if you dont count few dungeons/instances), DF also, EVE
I would not call Eve open world. Zone into each starsystem, zone to dock. Travel a long distance and it repeatedly fly zone fly zone, again and again and again. Eve is worse than Everquest and EQII for slow travel and constant zoning.

LOTRO has a few instanced dungeons if I remember correctly. Asheron's Call is a little like that in that the dungeons are accessed via magic portals in the world. The overland world, though is huge, though, and it does not funnel you like LOTRO or AoC and the majority of the others. If you see the outline of a tower in the far distance (and you could see such things that would take you 5+ minutes to run to) you can run in a direct path to it. There might be a steep wall you would have to find your way around, but you pretty much knew there was a way to get to it.
You could truly spin around for a bit in circles, stop and then take off running and exploring in the direction you faced. You weren't "ushered" in 2-3 "paths" which is the common method of MMO making today.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76) Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe
Not sure if EvE counts (course, definition is everything). I don't think I could fly from Rens to Jita at (even if it took like 3 real days) without using a jumpgate and hitting a jumpgate is zoning (and thus not "open") just as much as the zoning in EQ or AoC.

Tha Matrix Online is the largest open world mmo OUT THERR. When MXO 2 drops in a few weeks shizz is gonna be evan bigger s0n. Neo be droppin bombs on that sweet rp ya smell me?
Hail Neo, full of pwnage, Morpheus is with thee Blessed art thou among Zion, and blessed is the roundhouse against Smith. Holy Neo, pray for us now, and at the hour of Victory, Amen.
EVE is not an open world. Within a system sort of, but the reality is, it's just a warping to set points. All you ever do in EVE is warp to a finite amount of points in a system. Traveling is as others said.
warp - zone - warp - zone - warp - zone - warp ad nauseum. I love EVE's game mechanics but i think CCP screwed royally in making it a space ship MMO, i think they could have achieved everything had they made it a mechwarrior type and ported everything into mechwarrior style nad had an immersive world. Oh well.
Lineage 2 should take the cake for open world, they have some instances (dungeons) but the problem with open world is that if the game company sucks like NCbots, then the bots will overtake your open world whereas if it has numerous instances it's at the least better.
Yes, shameless I hate NCsoft for allowing numerous bots in their game +1. Completely shameful in an open world.

you all are leaving out the premier number one open world mmo....
star wars galaxies
unlike games like LOTR, even entering a house in Galaxies you wont see a loading screen.
I wouldnt call WoW a seamless open world either. Its a sad reflection on the genre when people look at WoW and consider it open. The game is divided up into zones with hard borders. Galaxies there arent these hard borders that divide zones up. Each planet is one giant world.
too bad galaxies developer sony decided 250k players wasnt enough and destroyed the game for the wow audience.
Darkfall is a true open world. It also has player justice and freedom built in.
If there was a word for Darkfall it would be MMOFPS not MMORPG.
That's what makes it unique. You cant auto target someone with a gun IRL. It adds to the immersion of the game, and requires player twitch skills to be successful. If you are not into PvP, you can also be a crafter/gatherer, or you can tackle some of the epic creatures in the game (like the black dragon in the middle of the world). Darkfall dares to be diffrent.
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Which MMOs are true open world MMOs? So far I can think of WoW and maybe LotRO. Definitely not a MMO like WAR where each zone is between a loading screen.
lotro? seriously you are joking right? lotro is an instanced mmorpg for a start and then their are loading screen between each zone and on top of that you have a loading screen to enter buildings.
by "open world" do you mean just seamless zoning between areas or are you refering to games that actually feel like a virtual world? Refering to zoning, WoW, Eve, lotro, vanguard, and several others are like that If you meant feeling like an actual world then Eve online is really the only thing like that, WoW is close to it as well.
WOW may be a little close but it still has instanced dungeons, Vanguard has none and is open, meaning if i can see it i can get to it.
Many people don't realise that VG is a vast open world with no intances and no loading into buildings. Housing is in the real world just like guild castles/forts.
Seriously, Saga of Ryzom. In no other MMO will you get the feeling you're actually walking through a living, breathing, dynamic and seemless MMO world that appears to live it's OWN life without your interference.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

It's possible to travel from one system to another without using a stargate. You can fly to every point in the universe navigating manually without warping or using jumpgates.
But if you want to spent several lifes to travel from Jita to Rens manually, have fun

Vanguard.
Yeah Vanguard ,a massive world ..everything you can see you can travel to
"after the time of dice came the day of mice "
not sure how it is now but UO used to be open world like wow and eve seemless server lines (thogh somtimes they hicup) and best of all no linear path.
