Is it still possible for SWG?

pingopingo Member UncommonPosts: 608

I have a serious feeling that allot of people have left in the last month.

Online action games like HL2 and Halo 2 has hit a little, but EQ2 and WoW has probably taken allot of players.

I am now starting to get concerned and seriously hopeful.

If it is indeed now that the fools at SOE and Lucasarts who makes all the bad decisions with SWG, are waking up and smelling that this game is dying, and actually are gonna put an afford to saving this game, is it even possible?

It would be so typical if it ends with becoming a very good game and everyone leaves.

SWG is still undergoin probably the biggest overhouls in MMO history, but im getting impatient.

How could a marketing campign be made so SWG could get players back. Most people wont even bother to download the patches anymore.

A SWG/JTL box set for very cheap - likely not gonna habben when SOE is so greedy, but still.

Maybe if an advertisment campign was launched along with episode 3(the movie and the ep3 game) then it could get more attention.

But currently it does not deserve to be saved.

the 5 things that can change SWG from among the worst to the best;

1)more music and starwars feel.. just more of it. Its funny that SWGs datafiles is full of sounds and talking from everything from real ewoks, stormtroppers, droids and so on.. too silent and generic in game currently.

2)jedi needs to get cut or seriously reduced. Ruining the game. its pandoras box. you simply dont let a class be overpowered due to lore! Its simply not gonna work and its suicide from pvp point of view,m nomatter how big a time sink it is!

3)combat balance; I doubt they will ever make it work, but I hope! also proper balance between melee vs range. Currently more melee people than ranged... lmao!

4)GCW revamp... at current speed this seems 2 years out in the future!

5)much much more PVE combat content!

---------------------------

I am not making this post to troll or bash SWG.

SWG will always have a special place in my heart. I have used so many 1000s of hours with SWG, and it was one of my first MMO and the feel in the beginning was magic. back when everyone looked for ways of unlocking jedi(before holocrons back at release)... before the imbalance with melee and range..

now SWG is a solo fest where Teras kasi masters kill rancor lairs with buffs.

SWGs amazing social aspect have been destroyed because of solo groups and buffs.

Player cities... all the features.. the mail system.. the friends list. the bio thingy.. badges.. houses.. harvesters... player vendors.. advertising..

SWG has so many tools. so much cloth, character creation option and a skill system which is horrible imbalanced but unlimited in the design.

No other MMO allows the player in that degree to make a fat white man dancing with allot of skills in cooking and pistols!

I want SWG to live. I want to have the magic back.. the fun.. the surprises.. the unexpected group play and the social community.

It all seems to die, and I dont want it. Please dont let it.

I waited for SWG for 3 years! And even though I have not played in over a half year I almost go check swgs fansites and so on weekly! Just having this little bit of hope that it will turn to the good thing again.

publish 9 was the end of me.

I remember when the action game jedi academy came out. I remember going to the forums and started complaining that stormtroppers with lightsabers was silly.

They told me go play SWG for a starwars RPG experience and abillity to immersive myself in that. Up until that point I could do that.

but as time passed and jedis started dueling in coronet it died for me.

I want to get back to SWG. To my old guild which is dying, and just saying that it was all a bad dream and SWG is turning around to the better.

damn I sound pathetic and spell pathetic.

Still. This game has unlimited potential.

It was starwars and a dream.

SWG can be saved.  Any veteran players who used to play SWG has seen how good it can be.

Heck even after playing EQ2 and WoW, if SWG had a balanced combat system, more content, no more bugs, no more Jedi and was just perfect... I'd come back.

Why? Cause SWG has potential to become the PERFECT MMORPG!  It's a RPG, you can role play, there's tones of emotes and moods to set.  There's a profession to make so many different kinds of clothing, there's a profession to change someone's looks, there's entertainers for people that just wanna socialize, there's Squad Leaders for large raids and groups, etc.

No other MMORPG has been this complete.

But since everything is broken, you get bored quick.  First 4 months of this game, I had tones of fun.  After that I learned about doctor buffs and 80% kinetic armor.  Had lots of fun mastering over 10 professions with 10 different characters cause it allowed me to try everything out.   That only lasted 4 months.  Then the Aurilian Village quests for the Jedi Revamp.  Spent 3 months on that crap, Phase 3 was buggy, SOE didn't give a flying #$k about the bug and asked that I just wait for next month, cancelled SWG.

But I didn't mind... cause if I coudln't become a Jedi, then I had nothing left to do in SWG.  In 8 months time I felt like I had did everything except collect all Ris Armor, get all BH or Mandolorian Armor pieces, get a Jet Pack and become a Jedi.

Oh and BTW, I re-activated my SWG account last month just cause I had stupidly Pre-Ordered JTL.  And EBgames did not want to gimme back my money, so I decided to play it anyways.

1 1/2 weeks after playing through JTL, managed to become a 4/3/3/3 Neutral Pilot, got bored, cancelled everything.

Problem is, I still have 2 months of subscription left, so I'm just racking up money with my entertainer buff-bot on Dantooine. lol

But hey, I'll come back if SWG has more content for the CORE of the game, not JTL.

i hear ya Pingo, i too really enjoyed SWG but as it degraded i became impatient and just couldnt stand it any longer. I would go bakc if the fixed the bugs and balance it better...the Jedi thing needs to be done like that had original planned/promised....

I hear you man. This game will always have a special place in my heart. It was really my first MMO ( I don't count the 4 days I played EQ1. I spent 2 of those days trying to find the exit to the Dark Elf town, and the other two realizing I needed to find my way back in and talk to the guild guy, before I just gave up the whole thing).

I remember my first day. I was a Wookiee on Talus with dreams of becoming a Droid Engineer/TKM becasue I had that Playstation game Masters of Teras Kasi. I was probably the first Wookiee on the server with a Bowcaster because a friend of mine looted it from a Meatlump. As soon as I realized Bowcasters used Rifle XP I switched to Rifleman. I remember thinking that 60k XP for Rifles IV was going to be impossible, and when 3 of us went out hunting Sharnffs, we thought we were getting butt-tons of XP. I don't know if the game will ever have that kind of magic again. I mean by definition magic is that which we don't understand. After playing the game for a year and a half there isn't much I don't understand. Even after the Combat Revamp, the mystery and wonder are gone.

My guild is all but dead. I only see about 2 other people ever logging on, and one of them is my brother. I'm afraid this game will go the way of AC2, Horizons and Shadowbane ::::16::

    I completely agree with pingo.

SWG is still the best mmorpg I played so far, although I left it and switched to EQ2...
    I'd come back too...

  • pingopingo Member UncommonPosts: 608

Great too see others who feel the same.

And I agree with you guys.

Yes. SWG has this magic. It does not need something irelevant like a jump button!

It had all these great stuffs. I remember how long I used to toy with titles! Making my bio and talking with people everywhere.

I remember when I as a noob had to protect a mate from danger! He was a chef who needed to go check his harvesters, but it was surronded by some crazy creatures:)

Or the sharnaff hunts. Just the chat talking! I remember sitting up at night just talking to soo many people in all sorts of groups. the hole social aspect was amazing.

And I remember when I started to create real cities. How they had an impact on the hole server. Suddenly we did a difference for my own server. Effected the economy! It was uniqe to our server because everything was build by us! There was not static world thing that made everything do the way they did! It was just us.

If we didnt made the best guns, it would effect all the combat people! It was neat.

    I just read this: http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/content.jsp?page=Star%20Wars%20Galaxies:%20Studio%20Update

I am currently playing WoW, and while it is great(all respect to Blizzard for this game)! It is just not what I wanted from a MMORPG.

    I don't know.

I hope SWG will turn to the better.

I remember the hype. Does 3 years of waiting. Every single week... I remember how great Q3PO was! All the discussions through the 11 months of beta and before! All the e3s!

I want this game to shine again. I want it just to go up and become strong again.

    cheers mates!

  • Good post, but it sounds a bit... ehhh... like you lost your family or something image.

SWG is dead and it's not comming back. There are too many good games that will improve at the same speed (if not faster), so SWG is going to eat dust until MMOs are obsolete, then it'll be forgotten like all the other games of the past image.

Star Wars just wasnt meant to be a boring graphical chatroom like SOE portrays it to be. Everquest is the extent of anything they can get right, and it's still a grind uphill.

I loved the hype and SWG was extremely fun at the beginning: with that fantasy magic feeling. It's like a small homemade cooking business goes bigshot then takes a chunk out of quality because they want more people to buy their product... then it's a big mess after they open their eyes.

I must agree with Johnark. SWG has potential to be the best but it is constantly failing to come through.

I've taken a prolonged vacation from swg until the combat upgrade, hoping that it will settle most of the difficulties.

  • Mr_ManMr_Man Member Posts: 77

If SWG improved, I would come back in a heartbeat.

The sad thing is, I'm playing WoW now and I can't help but think how awesome a Star Wars game like this would be.  I really like the complexity and depth of SWG's basic systems, but I can't help but think that they should have followed a little more traditional RPG systems.  At the very least, a simple system leveling would have been better because once you max out, you're done.

And, since your HAM never goes up, your "high end content" usually ranges from impossible to super easy.  Buffs were supposed to make up for that but in the end, they wound up making things more of an uphill climb.

2)jedi needs to get cut or seriously reduced. Ruining the game. its pandoras box. you simply dont let a class be overpowered due to lore! Its simply not gonna work and its suicide from pvp point of view,m nomatter how big a time sink it is!

so true jedis basically kill the GCW and kill all of the GCW PvP in the whole game cuz they can just run up and slice someone in half and its all over......
but i already know SoE wont take jedis out or reduce them because about 250 ppl would complain but right now everyone who isnt a jedi is complaining about them killing PvP and SoE seems not to care

AND about half the ppl on every server are already grinding there way up jedi with the new system released in pub 9 and its only about another few months till we start seeing jedis in packs and everyone will leave because there will be no other professions that can do anything like weapons and armor are made by jedi for jedi and there will be no squad leaders no smugglers no architects nothing at all.....everyone else in the game will get choked out of money and fun and have no choice but to leave there will also be no other combat professions because they all get killed by jedi and thats when SWG will surly fall......i say this game only has until about 10000 ppl on all the servers finally get to padawan and then SoE and lucas arts will realise that they screwed up royaly.

well enough about that i still play SWG and i still have fun with it its just the months ahead are looking very bad but i still love oing on and chatting or hunting with guild members till 2 in the morning
and i also think the combat revamp is WAY WAY WAY too late and it isnt even here yet i mean FEBRUARY WTF??? no one wants to wait that long for something that is just going to change the whole game (cause more bugs) and by that time it will be too late the padawans will have already flooded the servers and crushed the game

I am not sure how long SWG will be around, but as far as I am concerned SWG is dead.  They have managed to make something with Star Wars in the title that I hate something that has never been accomplished before.  I think there could be a great Star Wars mmorpg, but this isn't it.  In order for me to go back they would need to make a lot of changes.  Even then there will still be problems.

    1.  Jedis-  Here is the problem.  We want them around because that is part of Star Wars.  However the powers that be picked a time frame set in the movies.  I stupid decision.  They should have picked a time frame either way before the movies or set it after Return of the Jedi.  If there were this many Jedi espically since they are so strong, why hasn't Darth come around to kill them all?????

    2.  There is no point to playing.  Again the time period means that there is no change.  It doesn't mater if I play Rebel or not, I will not change the outcome of the story.

    3.  Lack of content.  There is really not much to do.  I here JTL has helped out a lot, but still how could you spend so much time on a game to have such little content?

    4.  Blasters can drop a StormTrooper in armor, but nice little woodland creatures?

    5.  Only one character per server unless you unlock the Jedi.

    6.  The grind.  This has to be the most pointless grinding I have ever experienced in an mmorpg and most online games do have a lot of grinding.

    7.  Lag.  Maybe the lag issue has been fixed but I have a top of the line system so I really should not experience any lag.

    8.  Dancing wookies.  They worst idea in the history of mankind.  I know SOE was wanting there to be a role for non-combat characters, but forcing others to have to go to a Cantina is stupid.  Then they allow wookies to dance.  That is is just wrong.  I do not like having to depend on other people who choose to play a dancing wookie.  In a good mmorpg you need to depend on others, in SWG you have to depend way too much on others.

However, most of these changes will not happen.  You cannot make such abrupt changes as to remove the jedis and expect a large portion of the population to accept it.  The best thing the LucasArts can do is to take the program and give it to another company besides SOE to develop and release SWG2.  One that is a good game.  If people still want to play this one that is fine.  Just like EQ is still available for EQ2.  But SWG2 would be a new release so they could make the radical changes that are necessary to make the best mmorpg ever.

  • What's so bad about dancing wookies? They're playable characters so they can do any animation that others can lol.

I'd agree that SWG is dead even while JTL came out (FPS-style space combat.... very dry unless you're a millionare image). The jedi are a big problem (for the whatever-eth time): i really think its wrong to have immature showboating saber-wielding jerks out running about in the open showing off their "1337 $ki11zorz". No jedi on any server are "true jedi" (the Light jedi: good natured and trustworthy, always fighting for the greater good and are very selfless. Dark Jedi: hunters of jedi and ill-tempered, wear dark clothing and always have red sabers; full of themselves unless they serve a master of some kind). Nobody follows those roleplaying stereotypes, i've seen plenty of bullheaded light jedi and a few dark jedi who feel merciful and spare a rebel's life. Bleh, it's like imps are rebels and vice-versa. Besides jedi screwing the entire plot of the Star Wars universe, they make up a majority of the population, soon when bounty hunters are the only ones who can kill jedi; the only demand for anything from crafters will be: Ub3r Composite Armor, Lightning cannons, and T3h Ub3r Pistol. Jedi being able to make their own weapons sort of eliminates the need for anything but the above mentioned... though i doubt the business of other peeps like us chefs and architects will feel any sting from this jedi inflation image.

The expansion was not as great as I had hoped. It came with space-combat and 4 new professions (imp, reb, neutral pilot and shipwright)... that's it, nothing else! No cool ground combat revamp, no really awesome schematics for the other crafters... just some two really stupid looking species and 4 professions with a new combat style in space. The shipwright profession drastically inflated the prices on all required resources, from 1 credit per unit for steel to a little over 25cpu for grinding-quality junk. So in retrospect... the expansion really didn't do much give the crafting community a buncha heartache.

While embarking once again upon the doorstep of SWG's portal, i felt confident that something changed. I entered the world to see everything worse than when I left on my vacation 2 weeks ago! -- As a kid, did you ever say a word so much that it didnt sound like anything sensible anymore? well i said the phrase "this is stupid" so much that it probably erased itself from the english language that day image-- anywho, a message to anyone who wants to rejoin SWG: DONT! It's a waste of any resources you could possibly spend on it.image

  • pingopingo Member UncommonPosts: 608

I will have to disagree with you mate.

JTL has to be the most ambitious expansion pack ever created.

If you ask me - then the SOE in house team that made SWG. Ralph Kosters team, had to be the team who had the most balls currently.

    SWG is so ambitious.

And I respect that. Looking in retro respect I think it is unfair that games like EQ2 and WoW which is the same old stuff all over again is gonna get the attention, when something truly uniqe like Planetside or SWG comes along, with problems, but still becomes forgetable instead of remembered for their ambitious and original ideas.

I just miss the days where I would go to the SWG homepage. For 3 years we all waited and talked about the game. Q3PO was such a great community manager back then.

The hole team was almost loveable! Might sound crazy, but they really listened to the players.

The problem has always just been that the casual gamers who mostly was ignorant in their requests would kill the game.

Like the crazy number of people going for jedi, despite the 1000-2000 hours of grind there is before reaching padawan.

The developers just did what so many of the mainstream gamers wanted. They wanted to wield glowing sticks and give the finger to the role playing aspect in the SW universe.

    And this is our result:'(

    Call me an optimist but

    a) I like SWG

    b) I do play other online games and I still like SWG  (regular in EVE Online, Tester in WoW and CoH)

    c) SWG is getting better

    d) SWG has the most potential of all the games I have seen so far

    e) with SOE and Lucasarts behind it - despite all their faults - this is a game to stay for years

    f) I am having fun   (Novarider on Naritus), my guild and town is growing, I have many friends online

So .. sue me ... I do not think this game is dead ... :-)

I don't see SWG growing, if anything I see it shrinking.  It would be nice to see it turn itself around but I agree with a previous poster, for me the magic of new is gone.  It will be hard to renew this July.  I have had a great time and met many wonderful players but its not the same seeing a friends list of over 700 show 600 or more offline.  While I agree that there are active groups and new blood coming in, the problems in the game (again Jedi, broken stuff and lagge) never get fixed and the lack of a Star Wars feel leaves the game somewhat bland.

Agreed, the game can be spiced up but at what cost?  Space expansion came at a $30 price tag and at $12 a month, I still do not see SOE delivering what they say, when they say.  For example, Smuggler revamp was supposed to occur with JTL.  This was told to myself and everyone else at Fanfest.  "Smuggling on the ground isn't fun; smuggling in space IS fun".  Ok that quote bit the big one; no revamp.  And that comment was made by SOE staff nearly 6 months before JTL launch.

To me, the game is not worth the price.  Luckily I can afford to play the game once a month for this price but for others who may not be so lucky I never recommend it.  WoW is fun; EQ2 is more fun although being a SOE product it has the grind so I cancelled that.  All in all, SWG will have to make substantial changes and then WORK hard to get customers back...if they care about saving it.  They at least do have core players like the original poster who will stay and help rebuild it.  So that is really the most important component.  The rest falls to SOE to understand the player base, their product and what they need to offer people to even comeback let alone stay.

just FYI u dont have to pay an extra $12 a month for JTL all u had to do was buy the expansion set

SWG roleplaying and its potential for roleplaying  is unrivalled in any mmorpg.

However, they really messed up the game espically with the jedi madness.

I would say best way is to actually add it to the all access offer.

Then they can work on the game and if it does improve people will play it enmass again.

I have the all access and it gives me a chance to see how planetside is shaping and have a nice large battle when i feel like it.

So if I could get SWG on that offer i will for sure be checking it out from time to time.

THose you want the best Star War immersion ... there are many pure roleplaying communities on various servers.

To find them, taking a look around the SOE SWG forum, roleplaying section, would be a good start.

cause they are tards that have no damned life... the games are both good and bad.. just like any mmorpg out there.

it is up to the individual to define their own experience. we can say what ever, but up to the moment you install the game and take a trail run, then you will decide if chasing quill's, sandpeople and becoming bantha fodder is worth it...

i have eq and eq2, which is a near dead account, i have wow2 account with a nicely leveled up human warrior and my fave is swg at the moment with the expansion.... heck i even have reloaded anarchy online, due to the word free..yet i could not justifiy grinding in anarchy anymore and have just requit due to it.
