WoW, it's kind of funny watching people get worked up over a post that is 17 years old. And Neosai,, you didn't shred his posts with logic for example.. "There is no honor in games" from him,, and you're reply is "I can't bring my honor?" Honor is a subjective term. Japanese warriors would commit Hairi kairi (sp) to keep honor intact. I"m pretty sure that Spartans and Vikings would see suicide, as opposed to actually dying in battle, as dishonorable. In PvP games - solo players find adds into their fight dishonorable. 8 vs 8 In DaoC used to argue the zerg or adds were dishonorable.
Your vision of "honor' and my vision might not meet. Or anyone else's vision for that matter. So as long as it's allowed in game mechanics the term "honor" is thrown out the window and replaced with survival or victor.
I usually find myself in agreement with your posts Green, but I don't think folks are getting worked up so much as having fun with the articles hypocracy. And whats with the WoW v. Wow? Are you one of the brainwashed masses?

Maybe their having fun. But consistent comments about how the guy is a gloating prick,, or is his delusions of grandeur are ridiculous. Did people ever think that maybe he intended the writing to come across that way? That it's possible this was nothing more than his attempt at creative fiction for his entertainment or others? I mean seriously, do we really think Stephen King is a delusional old woman who cuts off people's feet? Are all roleplayer's really convinced they have superpowers or that they are a princess in a kingdom of peope to serve them??
I don't know if the guy is full of himself or if he's just filing a role and writing something he found entertaining, or trying to convey a message in what he felt was a creative an entertaining manner. But some of the people's posts here have automatically pigeon-holed this guy.
As for the WoW v WOW ? You kinda lost me on that one.
Edit: nevermind had a brainfart,,I think you're referring to my typo. heh Yea I need to break that habit if that's what you were referring to.

It ultimately comes to what 'win conditions' you consider worthwile. Some people define their win conditions by how much they beat the other guy. Others define their by how much overall benefit they have created.
Personally I see situation where competition is prefered over cooperation to be a failure in the system. Instead of generating additional value you have to engage in a zero sum competition where the overall outcome is a net loss of value.
If I am going to kill a boss and someone else turns up the smart thing to do is to group up, cooperate and share in the spoils. Anything else is stupid and greedy and games designed to create that kind of conflict are too dumbed down for me.
For some reason, as I was reading this, I was reminded of Dexter Morgan. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy PvP as much as the next guy but as I was reading that little rant, I realized that the author is living out his sociopathic urges through a video game.

On a more serious note, the article didn't strike me as funny or satirical in any way shape or form. So I'm going to go with my original assumption. Simply because I've been playing MMOs for more than 10 years now and have ran into people like him through out my time in different games.

No I am not assuming one way or the other. I have not made a decision and I would not be able to make an educated decision on the writer's intentions without speaking directly to the writer.
What I can do is read the post and decide if there are things I can relate to or interpret in my own way. You can do the same and take from it what you will. That still does not mean you or I have a crystal clear indication of the writer's intent.
What I can tell though is from the responses of anti-pvp'rs and pver's is they are a very intolerant group of people.
As long as we're on the "let's not assume anything" kick, I'd like to point out that not only may the author not be an arrogant jerk, he may also not be a PvPer. It's also possible that he's not even a gamer. "He" may in fact be a Bolivian housewife, under the control of alien brainworms, and the article contained an encoded message regarding the enslavement of the planet Earth.
But since we don't know any of this for sure, I'm going to take the article at face value. If the author is acting like an arrogant jerkoff with delusions of grandeur, it's probably because he's an arrogant jerkoff with delusions of grandeur.

Now we should be "tolerant" of people who get their jollies by annoying and griefing others? ^^ People who imagine they are some type of modern age barbarian(without understanding the implications). Its possible it was written tongue firmly in cheek. But having dealt with all too many such types over the years, it can be difficult to tell. From thoughtless bnet kiddies, to people who have to peg the sociopathic scale all the way over(the types that make your skin crawl), I've heard all of the justfications and rationalizations. Games that pander to such types simply add fuel to the fire(and usually have limited profit potential and life spans).

How is he griefing you? He says he kills you once and walks off. He won't respond to you or send you tells to taunt you. To grief, would be to kill you multiple times or send you tells of a malicious or taunting nature.
Also, if he is annoying you , is it not of your own doing? You are in a PvP environment allowing him to kill you by the rulesets of the game. If you don't want to be annoyed, stay out of those rulesets or zones. You would have made the choice to go into areas therefore accepting the parameters of that zone in regards to pvp. Him being able to annoy you is a by-product of your poor choice for you own sake.
I would also say, if this guy is indeed serious and is just being grandoise, that absolutely discredits him as being a griefer, or annoying you because he likes the thrill of the hunt.
And what exactly is this Fire that games are adding the fuel too ?

That point of view can be applied to any media. Who really knows what Alexander Dumas meant when he wrote "The Three Musketeers?" Or who knows, maybe "Transformers 2" has some deeper meaning behind it besides giant robots, boobies and explosions?
Intolerant of what exactly? A sociopath who glorifies himself by bragging about how he loves to ruin other people's time and somehow manages to continue his "normal" existence because the video game allows him to release his urges?
Listen. I love PvP. I only play on PvP servers and love TF2. I enjoy the competitive form of PvP and I do not go out of my way to ruin another person's day. I don't find it fun. No normal person would. I mean would you find it fun to senselessly beat a complete stranger in real life for no reason whatsoever? Why would you find it fun to do the same in a video game?

Thats a cute carebear, carebear.
Thanks, I like it as well. ^^ Way too many people use Carebear as an insult. To many of us, its a high compliment. ^^
That point of view can be applied to any media. Who really knows what Alexander Dumas meant when he wrote "The Three Musketeers?" Or who knows, maybe "Transformers 2" has some deeper meaning behind it besides giant robots, boobies and explosions? Well at the base level of it all it's Good vs. Evil. It also has undertones of the Messiah archetype character with Optimus, with a sidestory of romance and loyalty in a relationship overcoming obstacles as well. But yea the manner in which this story is all carried out is through bombs, boobs, and explosions. Intolerant of what exactly? A sociopath who glorifies himself by bragging about how he loves to ruin other people's time and somehow manages to continue his "normal" existence because the video game allows him to release his urges? Intolerant of PvP'rs. Because the first response from anti-pvp'rs and generally an overreactive one was this guy is a grandoise psychopath who is fueling his desires to grief other people. When people rush to quick judgments like that, it usually is a sign of intolerance. Much like if someone hears that a guy robbed a convenience store and someone says" Was he black" or someone got beat up at a club and someone asks " was he gay?" All I am saying is read the article and see that their are other possibilities. I'm not taking a stance on one or the other. I mean how do you know he's a sociopath? How do you know he's out to ruin your day? Isn't he just there to put a little more immersion in the game by filling a role within the context of the game? Is he really bragging? He didn't mention one name of a person he killed and everything else he states that he won't gloat over you, spam you with messages. He'll do his job and move on. Would a braggart really just walk away from ganking you? I just see too many inconsitencies in these "Forum Psychologists" comments here. Listen. I enjoy competitive pvp as well. In DaoC I would gank lowbies but for a purpose. Sometimes I'd let them live because it served no purpose to kill them. But this guy did not go out of his way to ruin their day, he killed them once from his comments and left. It's part of the game, if people have a problem with that, than play a different game or stay out of pvp areas. You cannot bitch about what you allowed to happen due to your decisions. No I only find if fun to beat people senseless that actually deserve it.

This was an interesting read indeed. Let me toss my comments in reaction to some of the opinions too.
We all have a few games in which we come from in any specific genre or theme. My introduction to PKILL was from MUDs and it was what some consider the hardcore kind with very heavy losses. In general, writeups like these fit into what I like to think of as the player acting out a role in order to explain ones style. In this case it seems obvious to me that a player wants to take on a role that's very fun and meaningful to play. He or she is the "PKILL'ER" and wants to explain the reasoning behind all the blood while keeping in role and on point that they are just the average person like you or me.
Another thing I picked up from this as well just general experience is that sometimes styles of game play are only clear to the person who utilizes it. It's like the guy who uses some strange character build you never see used and can't see how it's effective in any form of that type of game play. Yet to that one player it's what fits them the most and something they utterly swear by because that's how they play and no one else will understand it.
Though it might seem generic or cheap but generally that's how some players view it to me. Then on most levels they like to express why they are so different to try and sometimes recruit others to try something different too. I think that's one of the best things in online gaming because it does promote diversity and uniqueness in many ways. Thus to me it's not so much on the action of what he or she does in the context (i.e.: griefing or whatever) but exactly what the overall message reflects. In this case, a PKILL'ER like you and me.
Cheers!

Thats a cute carebear, carebear.
You assume he is living out his sociopathic urges. He could just be yanking everyone's chain.

Thanks, I like it as well. ^^ Way too many people use Carebear as an insult. To many of us, its a high compliment. ^^
Cheers!
